This is what you get as your first car after you've just passed your driver's test at the age of 25: a 1965 Ferrari 330GT 2+2 Coupe. Of course, that's assuming your name also happens to be John Lennon and you've just helped record Ticket to Ride with the rest of your Beatles cronies.

When news of Lennon getting a driver's license made the newspapers in England, luxury car makers parked outside his mansion with offerings and this is the one he chose, painted Azzuro Blue with a blue interior. He paid 6,500 pounds, said to be equivalent to 110,000 pounds today ($170K US).

Bonhams will be auctioning the blue Italian at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 12. It was just one of 500 built, has been restored to its original condition, has matching numbers and its original license plate number. The pre-auction estimate is between 180,000 and 220,000 pounds ($278K - $340K US).

Have a read of the press release below for more on the history of Lennon's Ferrari and a few of the other big-money classics that will go under the hammer.
Continue reading John Lennon's first car being sold at auction

John Lennon's first car being sold at auction originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 May 2013 19:14:00 EST.
Vintage Ferrari models show up on the auction circuit all the time, but few can match this particular '53 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione in terms of historical significance. Not only did the machine compete in the 1953 24 Hours of Le Mans, but this particular model managed to finish in second place before being disqualified for taking on extra brake fluid during a stop. More importantly, a total of three Formula One world champions have driven this car in competition at events like the Spa 24 Hours, Pescara 12 Hours and the Circuit of Guadeloupe.

The coolest part for us? Umberto Maglioli managed to set a public road stage record with this machine during the Carrera Panamericana by averaging 138 miles per hour over 223 miles. The effort was good enough to land the team a sixth place finish overall, and the record still stands to this day for any road stage anywhere. The 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione is up for auction in restored condition at the <strike>RM Auction event in Paris this week</strike> Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Cernobbio, Italy on May 25.
If you're still upset that you missed out on bringing home the $4.62 million 1966 Barris Batmobile, the internet may just have your redemption. Technically, the car created for the TV show wasn't the Caped Crusader's first ride. In the early '60s, All Star Dairies commissioned this machine to promote the company's Batman and Robin milk. The owner originally built the car between 1961 and 1963 using an Oldsmobile chassis (complete with a 350 V8) and a custom fiberglass body, and the dairy company approached the owner to lease it for two years to promote its comic-themed products. That makes this creation the world's first Batmobile, preceding the famous Barris machine by two years.

With wild fins, doors that actually slide into the bodywork and plenty of memorabilia from its illustrious past, the car is plenty cool. Unfortunately, the intervening four decades haven't exactly been kind to the vehicle, and it will need a full-on restoration. Right now there are four days left on the auction with an unanswered opening bid of $19,800. Check out the eBay Motors auction for more information.
eBay Find of the Day: The Batmobile before the first Batmobile originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 04 Feb 2013 18:29:00 EST.
The last car Steve McQueen ever drove in a movie is officially up for auction. The 1951 Chevrolet Styline DeLuxe Convertible you see above is now owned by none other than Rick Harrison of Pawn Stars fame, but once ferried McQueen around the set of his last film, 1980's The Hunter. That flick saw the Bullit star play a bumbling bounty hunter and didn't exactly set the box office on fire. McQueen bought the car after production wrapped, and four years later it sold at his estate sale at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas.

Flash forward to 2003, and the convertible received a full restoration back to near-stock specifications. Hagerty Insurance estimates the car to be worth around $45,000 without the significant provenance. Given its ties to one of film's most popular gearheads, the old Chevrolet could fetch up to 10 times that when it goes under the gavel in Ft Luaderdale, Florida on March 22. You can head over to the Auctions America site for more information.
General Motors is set to auction off the very first C7 Corvette for charity at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction, on January 19. GM has a long history of using historically significant models to raise funds for worthy causes, and the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray should fetch a heady price for the College for Creative Studies. Look for the car to go under the gavel with no reserve.

We first heard about GM using Barrett-Jackson to sell the debut C7 last month, when the auction house published its list of lots for the January event. At the time, Lot No. 3016 offered few details beyond the fact that the vehicle up for bid was a "piece of Chevy history." We'd say that's about accurate.

Whoever wins the car can look forward to a 6.2-liter V8 with 450 horsepower on hand as well as a seven-speed manual transmission with rev-matching downshifts.
Members of the motoring press who were invited to the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray reveal all left with a pretty sweet press kit. The individually numbered black box within a black box contained not only a chunky little flash drive, but a paperweight adorned with an actual Stingray badge.

Before we even left the press reveal, at least one had popped up on eBay. There are several there now, including one being auctioned by Chevrolet for charity. Chevy's auction features number 1 of the 2,014 produced. Not only that, but the interior black box has been signed by "key GM executives."

With just about a half a day left on the timer, the bidding has reached more than $1,500 for this piece of rare Vette memorabilia. Considering it's the first kit in the series and the money will go to the American Cancer Society, we can't really argue with the steep price. Happy bidding, Corvette fans.

eBay Find Of The Day: Chevrolet Corvette Stingray press kit for charity originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 16 Jan 2013 08:59:00 EST.
Is it just us or has eBay really become, of late, a surprising time capsule of older, barely used automobiles? We've had the 2005 Porsche Carrera GT with 83 miles, the 2004 Ferrari Enzo with 175 miles, the 1987 Shelby Lancer with 22 miles, the 1989 Shelby Dakota with 23 miles - none of those four cars ever even registered - and the 1975 Cosworth Vega with 191 miles. You can add to that list a 1977 Jeep J20 - the kind of Jeep that enthusiasts point to when they beg the brand to make another pickup truck.

Listed on eBay by Masterpiece Classic Cars in Whiteland, Indiana, the Brandywine and Alpine White truck has used its 360-cubic-inch V8 paired with a three-speed automatic to go just 3,940 documented miles. Not surprisingly, it's listed in excellent condition and the images appear to bear that out. The three-quarter-ton pickup comes with its original manual and pamphlets, the Quadra-Track four-wheel drive probably just as ready to tackle the terrain as it was 36 years ago. If only it came with some John Denver to play in that AM/FM/8-Track stereo...

At the time of writing it hasn't garnered a single offer or bid, probably due to the above-top-dollar Buy It Now price of $34,900. Still, since this is likely the closest you'll get to a Jeep pickup for some time, we'd recommend admiring it in the gallery of photos above.
eBay Find of the Day: 1977 Jeep J20 time capsule originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 08 Jan 2013 16:29:00 EST. Something like an unregistered 2005 Porsche Carrera GT. The car has never been titled and has just 83 miles on the odometer. With one owner since new, the Carrera GT is likely to be as nice an example as you're likely to find outside of a museum. Porsche only built 340 of these machines back in 2005, and with a 610 horsepower V10 kicking at your spine, you can lap Santa's sleigh next year. Currently, the Carrera GT has a buy it now price of $457,325 with around six days left on the auction.

Not flashy enough for your tastes? Stroll on down to West Hollywood and you'll find a similarly untitled 2004 Ferrari Enzo up for grabs with a sticker of $1.8 million. Technically a Euro-spec car, the Enzo isn't legal to operate on US roads, but could be modified to satisfy Uncle Sam with a little effort. The seller calls this car the "last brand-new Enzo in existence" and with 175 miles on the clock, that may be a true statement. You can head over to eBay Motors for a closer look if you're feeling spendy.
eBay Find of the Day: Your choice of new, unregistered mid-2000s supercars originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 26 Dec 2012 15:30:00 EST.
President George W. Bush was known as much for the many liberties he took with the English language as he was for being a Texan, and, in the latter regard, it is not all that surprising that the 43rd President's truck of choice was a Ford F-150... the key word here, of course, being was. The truck used by the former president around his Crawford, TX ranch, a 2009 Ford F-150 King Ranch 4x4 SuperCrew, will be auctioned off at Barrett-Jackson next month with the proceeds of the sale going to the Fisher House Foundation.

President Bush bought the truck new in 2009, and used it to drive around his ranch with families and dignitaries. As a part of the auction, President Bush autographed the instrument panel, and there will also be an accompanying video of him signing and driving the truck. It isn't clear how many miles are on the F-150, but it sounds like not too many, if any, were from driving on public roads.

"I haven't driven on a street in many, many years, but I have been able to drive this truck on my ranch," said President Bush. "I want to thank all those who are supporting the Fisher House. In supporting the Fisher House, you're supporting our veterans. And in supporting our veterans, you're helping America."

The original 1966 Batmobile is headed to auction in Scottsdale, AZ on January 19, and we hopped down to Barris Kustoms in North Hollywood before the car left for good. George Barris has owned this particular car since 1965 when he bought it from Ford for the princely sum of $1. While it started life as the expensive and Italian-built 1955 Lincoln Futura Concept, the car would go on to worldwide fame after a hasty makeover from Barris. Over just three days, the custom car builder sank his teeth into the hand-hammered sheetmetal to create Batman's first Batmobile.

Up close, the car can't help but look cartoonish thanks to its over-the-top '60s design, but that doesn't diminish the car's presence. This is the car Adam West spent two years piloting around Gotham and matching wits with the city's cast of deviants. Very cool. We'll keep you posted on how the car performs when it rolls across the stage at Barret-Jackson Scottsdale next month.
In Detail: Original 1966 Batmobile on display ahead of sale at Barrett-Jackson originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 09 Dec 2012 16:55:00 EST.
Heritage Auctions has gotten its hands on an interesting piece of automotive cinema history. Bidders can now vie for the 1949 Buick Roadmaster Convertible from the 1988 film Rain Man featuring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman. The straight-eight powered convertible is one of two used in filming and features an upgraded rear suspension to cope with the weight of a cameraman and camera equipment. The seller has included several bits of documentation showing where the big Buick was rented by MGM for filming, including insurance receipts and loan agreements.

As it sits, the Roadmaster has an opening bid of $40,000 and is located in Sacramento, California, though we suspect the seller may have a much higher reserve. The auction won't reveal that figure until December 7. You can find out more and see additional photography by heading over to the Heritage Auctions site.
Be an excellent driver and buy the 1949 Buick Roadmaster from Rain Man originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Nov 2012 14:59:00 EST.
The Dean V. Kruse Foundation is hard at work scrounging up cash to pay off some serious debt, and that work has led the organization to auction off more than half of the vehicles contained in the National Military History Center collection. If you're looking for World War II-era armor, consider this your one-stop shop. Want a 1941 Krupp Flak gun? No problem. How about a 1944 Steyr full-track? This Auctions America sale has you covered. The listing even includes rarities like a 1943-44 Dragon Wagon Tank recovery vehicle.

That particular machine was built to pull heavy hardware out of sticky situations. A pair of 60,000-pound winches were made to yank stricken armor onto the trailer, allowing the 48,890-pound crawler to trundle to safety at a top speed of 28 mph. Later, this same design was used to pull Saturn V rockets around for NASA.

All told, the auction will offer the largest selection of full and half-track military vehicles for sale at the same time. Head over to the Auctions America site for a closer look.
Need an armored transport? Bruce Weiner's Microcar Museum in Madison, Georgia is said to be the largest collection of little cars in the world, and they're all rolling over the RM Auctions block February 15-16, 2013. Weiner spent 15 years assembling the 200-strong bounty, and beyond the size of the collection RM Auctions says many of ladybug-sized vehicles are of exceptional rarity or in the best condition or the most unusual, and are headed to auction for the first time.

The BMW Isetta is practically a base commoner compared to the rare nobility in the collection, like the 1957 Messerschmitt - yes, that Messerschmitt - KR201 and Messerschmitt Tiger, the Goggomobil Transporter, Voisin Biscooters and the world's single Mivalino. Nevertheless, there are some special Isetta's in the fold, including a German police version, a pickup and an Isetta turned into a Hot Wheels build called the "Whattadrag" with a 502-cubic-inch Chevrolet engine boasting 730 horsepower.

Alongside the hundreds of cars will go hundreds of collectibles from the 1940s to 1960s, like neon signs, kiddie rides, scale models, vending machines and candy dispensers. There's a press release below, with a video on the auction and a clip on the museum from the History Channel's Modern Marvels.
Continue reading Entire inventory of Microcar Museum to be auctioned

Entire inventory of Microcar Museum to be auctioned originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 08:00:00 EST.
If you're well-off your interest might have been piqued a few weeks ago by Evanta's 1:1 scale model of the Le Mans-winning Aston Martin DBR1/2. The AirFix-like art work, 20.8 feet long, 11.3 feet high and weighing over half a ton, will be auctioned during the Goodwood Revival Weekend with pre-sale estimates as high as £30,000 ($46,929 U.S.).

If you're wealthy - like Goldman Sachs has you on speed dial, wealthy - you might be interested in the real thing and not the model. Talacrest, a British concern that focuses on classic Ferraris, is selling the genuine DBR1/2 on the open market and asking £20 million ($32M U.S.).

Valued by Talacrest as one of the top five cars in the world, receipt of the asking price would definitely put the DBR1/2 among the top five public sales in the world and make it the most valuable Aston Martin ever sold. And since this isn't an auction, you don't need to wait for the privilege; you can give Talacrest a call from the 24-karat gold throne in the office at the back of your bullion vault, at your leisure.
Le Mans-winning Aston Martin DBR1/2 offered for sale at princely sum originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Sep 2012 08:44:00 EST.
If there's a recession afoot, no one told the bidders at Saturday's RM Auctions sale. A total of 13 cars went home to new owners for $1 million or more, including a 1956 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Berlinetta TdF at $6.71 million. The '56 was hardly the star of the evening, however, as 1962 Ferrari 250 GT short-wheelbase California Spyder fell under the gavel at $8.58 million. The Italian automaker only built 37 250 GT SWB Spyders with covered headlights, and this particular example has the benefit of being both Ferrari Classiche-certified and a Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance class winner.

A road-going 1967 Ford GT40 Mk I went home to the tune of $2.86 million, while the 2001 Bentley Speed 8 Le Mans Prototype took in $2.53 million. A number of race cars crossed the stage on Saturday, including a '64 Shelby 289 Competition Cobra, which sold for $1.32 million. Check out the full press release below for a complete list of the 13 $1 million-plus sales on Saturday.

The day prior, the auction house moved an additional seven examples for more than $1 million, bumping the total number of vehicles to crest the seven-digit mark to 20. As the auctioneer so poignantly underscored, "It's only money, gentlemen. You can always make more on Monday."
Continue reading RM Auctions sees 20 cars sell for $1 million or more in Monterey

RM Auctions sees 20 cars sell for $1 million or more in Monterey originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 Aug 2012 13:31:00 EST.
Every once in a while, we come across an automotive tchotchke that makes us go, "Oh. Wow." This is one of them. A work of art produced by Evanta Motor Company - the same that produces the arrestingly gorgeous DB4GT rebody. It's a model of the Aston Martin DBR1/2 that Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori drove to a Le Mans win in 1959. The awesomeness: it is a 1:1 scale model on a parts tree. Yes, as in a life-sized, 20.8-feet long and 11.3-feet high, weighing between 1,100 and 1,320 pounds.

Totally handmade in the style of an AirFix kit, the entire DBR1 bodyshell is included, as well as bits such as accurately upholstered seats, four 16-inch wire wheels with Aston Martin knock-offs, a Mota Lita steering wheel and a cap signed by Shelby and Salvadori. Each part is labeled and has an AirFix-like guide number attached as if you were were really going to pore over the instruction sheet for assembly.

There is only one of them and it is headed to auction during Goodwood Revival weekend at the Goodwood circuit in the UK. While we think almost any price would be acceptable, the auction guide price is $20,000-£30,000 ($31,286-$46,929 U.S.). That's got us wondering how much of our own junk we can sell to satisfy a desire bordering on can't-live-without. Read more about it in the press release below and check out the beauty in the gallery of Richard Pardon high-res photos.
Continue reading 1:1 scale model parts tree of Aston Martin's 1959 Le Mans winner is stunning

1:1 scale model parts tree of Aston Martin's 1959 Le Mans winner is stunning originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 16:31:00 EST.
The 1960 Plymouth XNR will cross the block next month at the RM Auction in Monterey, Calif.

The one-of-a-kind sports car was penned by Chrysler design guru Virgil Exner, who always hoped Chrysler would include a roadster in its lineup. The XNR featured a powerful six-cylinder engine that pumped out 250 horses and gave the XNR a top of speed of 150 mph.

Ultimately, the project never got the green light, and the XNR was shipped back to Carrozzeria Ghia in Italy, where it was built.

From there, the car's story gets more interesting. A series of owners bought it in the '60s, and it wound up in the Shah of Iran's garage. It was sold again before it disappeared. In the early 1980s, car collector Karim Edde discovered the XNR in Beirut, Lebanon, hidden away in an underground garage. He bought the car and shuffled it around safe houses as the civil war erupted around him.

Twenty years later, Edde had the XNR fully restored. Since it's a concept, there were no spare parts and whatever could not be repaired was fabricated. RM Auctions has not suggested a price the XNR will go for, but we hope its next owner continues the car's legacy.

You can watch Chrysler engineers test the XNR at the company's proving grounds in the video below.
Continue reading Plymouth XNR concept parks on the auction block [w/video]

Plymouth XNR concept parks on the auction block [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 28 Jul 2012 18:01:00 EST.
It isn't always kittens and cotton candy when a client splits with an advertising agency, especially at the end of a long relationship. If either side makes a statement at all, it's usually full of platitudes and the kind of celebrity divorce tone that leads you to wonder, "What happened there?"

There's none of that after Mini Canada separated from its agency of ten years, Taxi in Toronto - well, almost none of it. Instead, Taxi is taking its own 2008 Mini, the one it displayed in its boardroom, for one final publicity splurge by auctioning it on eBay and donating the proceeds to Toronto's Covenant House. It is an excellent way to go.

At the time of writing the bidding is up to $10,500 Canadian (about the same in U.S. dollars). Have a look below for a few samples of Taxi's work for Mini over the years, and head over to eBay to get in on the charity action.
Continue reading Mini Canada's former ad agency selling one last car

Mini Canada's former ad agency selling one last car originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 14 Jul 2012 16:02:00 EST.
Prince Rainier III of Monaco spent years amassing a collection of classic, rare and collectible automobiles. It was an eclectic assortment of makes, models and eras. A 1939 Simca 5 shared the same display area as a 1980 Citroën CX2400 and a 1928 Hispano Suiza.

But his son, Prince Albert II, wants to take the collection in a different direction. We don't know for sure, but perhaps he wants a more focused group of autos. So Prince Albert II is putting 38 of the cars up for auction.

A few of the more interesting lots are the aforementioned 1939 Simca 5 expected to go for between 8,000 and 10,000€ (about $12,500) and a rare 1973 Camaro export model with 43k kilometers on the odo. It's described as being in very good shape, but its inline six keeps the expected sale price to between 8,000 and 12,000€ ($15,000).

On the high end is a 1924 Panhard & Levassor X47 limo with a Weymann body. Weymann, the auction catalog reads, was known for making lightweight, aviation-inspired bodies by stretching imitation leather across wooden frames. This car's rarity and superb condition could push the top bid to and estimated 35,000€ ($44,000).
The auction takes place on July 26 in Monaco. All the cars to be sold can be seen on the auction house's website or you can download a PDF of the catalog here.
Prince of Monaco auctioning some of dad's collection originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 08:30:00 EST. In the wake of the devastating earthquakes that rocked northern Italy in late May, Ferrari announced an auction to raise money towards relief efforts. That online auction is now in the books, with benefactors giving generously to help the afflicted victims while netting some prize-worthy collectibles.

The biggest-ticket item is a 599XX track car (pictured above) that went to an American bidder at 1.4 million euros - equivalent to nearly $1.8 million. The car will be signed by Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo and F1 drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, who will deliver the car to its new owner personally at the Italian Grand Prix.

A nose cone from an F60 (Scuderia Ferrari's 2009 F1 car) sold for 23,000 euros (~$29k), an engine from the constructors' championship-winning F2008 racer went for nearly twice its reserve price at 80,000 euros (~$100k), with other items including helmets used by Alonso and Massa and a racing suit worn by Giancarlo Fisichella.
Continue reading Ferrari raises $2.3M for earthquake relief

Ferrari raises $2.3M for earthquake relief originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 24 Jun 2012 19:03:00 EST.
