Word on the street is that the next-gen Cadillac CTS-V, due as a 2014 model, will retain its force-fed powerplant but its design will be based on the modern 6.2-liter LT1 that will find a home under the hood of the new Corvette. General Motors is reportedly working on two variants of the engine, one supercharged and the other with twin turbochargers - one of the engines will serve duty in the upcoming CTS-V and the brand's upcoming rear-wheel drive flagship. Expect the engine, regardless of its intake method, to make more power than the current powerplant (a 6.2-liter V8 with an Eaton Twin Vortices Series supercharger developing 556 horsepower and 551 pound-feet of torque), but with improved efficiency.

The ATS-V, still officially unannounced, will reportedly get a twin-turbocharged V6. That engine should be plenty powerful, but if consumers demand even more displacement there is room under the hood for something as large as a 7.0-liter V8, say reports. Wouldn't that be fun?
Next Cadillac CTS-V to get forced-induction V8; ATS-V a twin-turbo V6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Feb 2013 09:14:00 EST.
Don't be surprised. This isn't the first time we've heard talk of Cadillac looking to expand its ATS lineup beyond the new-for-2013 sedan. Earlier this year, we reported that the automaker may be looking to move its CTS Coupe and Sport Wagon models down to the ATS line, and before that, our intrepid spy photographers had caught what appears to be a high-power ATS-V out testing.

TheDetroitBureau.com points out that the biggest challenge Cadillac faces in coming up with an ATS coupe is how to create something that doesn't just resemble a smaller version of the larger CTS two-door. Of course, the larger model could just be ditched altogether in favor of a rakish new ATS variant, and while Cadillac (as usual) cannot confirm future product plans, spokespeople within the automaker were a bit ruffled when rumors of the ATS coupe's demise were greatly exaggerated.

An ATS-V is indeed more likely to show up first, though at this point, there's still apparently some back-and-forth about whether or not to throw a big V8 or turbocharged V6 under the hood. We've heard rumors of everything from a 380-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 to a 470-horsepower 6.2-liter V8, so at this point, your guess is as good as ours.

Finally, TheDetroitBureau.com reports that future ATS models aren't the only thing spinning through the Cadillac rumormill right now. Apparently, several sources within the automaker have discussed the possibility of adding a convertible to the lineup - something that has been absent since the XLR was killed off a few years ago. Something giant and grandiose like the Ciel concept is certainly an option, but who knows, maybe there's a droptop ATS variant in the works, too.
Cadillac ATS-V, Coupe talks resurface, new convertible model in the works? originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 13:28:00 EST.
Motor Trend launched its new "Wide Open Throttle" news program on YouTube with a bombshell: "Cadillac Puts Hold on ATS Coupe." While it certainly gave us reason to click play, there's just one problem. The report - claiming that not just the coupe, but multiple ATS variants have been delayed or cancelled - may not be accurate.

Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell gave us the usual manufacturer disclaimer about not commenting on future product, but he did tell us, "There has been no recent radical shift in strategy" for the ATS. Reading between the lines, that either means an ATS coupe hasn't gotten past the idea stage, or that GM is still working hard at bringing us a two-door version of Caddy's BMW 3 Series fighter.

"On either end of the spectrum the reporting is inaccurate," Caldwell said, referring to those who have opined that Cadillac will launch several variants of the ATS sedan that comes to market later this year, including a coupe, a convertible, a wagon, and a shooting brake.

"We do plan to do variants," Caldwell told us. "We haven't yet called our shot of how we're going to execute that."

So what do we make of all this? We're pretty sure that we'll still see an ATS-V sedan, and perhaps that could be it for ATS models if the standard sedan is not well received. If sales take off, however, don't be surprised if Cadillac does move forward with at least one new bodystyle.

When we heard Cadillac was mulling up a V-Series variant of the upcoming ATS, we were really hoping for LSA V8 power. But if Car and Driver sources are correct, we may not be so lucky. Those sources claim the upcoming entry-level performance Caddy will boast a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with around 380 horsepower. That should be more than enough juice to push the performance ATS to 60 in under five seconds, while also saving a bit of fuel compared to a supercharged V8.

Cadillac is targeting the BMW M3 with its new ATS-V, and the folks in Munich have already confirmed that the next-gen M car will also have turbocharged, six-cylinder power.

C/D opines that an uber-ATS could also be in the works, LSA power and all. While far from a sure thing, a supercharged V8-packing ATS would no doubt serve notice to the world of entry lux models that Team Cadillac is playing to win. Still, a twin-turbo V6 ATS could still be an ass-kicking marvel of considerable proportions. 380 horsepower could indeed be an underestimation, in part since no V variant has ever featured less than 400 horsepower. We'd further add that any Cadillac V-Series model should be able to best a $28,000 Mustang GT, but that's just our opinion.
Cadillac ATS-V to pack twin-turbo V6 power originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 May 2011 19:01:00 EST. Cadillac has made it clear it plans to enter the rarified air generally reserved for such finely tuned machinery as the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class with the same verve and gusto it's done with its CTS. And the vehicle it hopes will earn them entrance into the hotly contested market is the upcoming ATS.

We know General Motors will attack the small end of the premium market with a multi-tiered approach, including engines packing four, six or eight cylinders. A new document that surfaced on Cheers & Gears seems to indicate just such an approach, culminating in a fire-breathing ATS-V with a 6.2-liter pushrod V8 engine sending 470 horsepower and 438 pound-feet of torque through either a six-speed automatic or manual gearbox.

Moving down a notch will reportedly get you the same 3.6-liter direct injected V6 engine that powers the bulk of Caddy's CTS models; 330 horses and 280 lb-ft will be routed through an eight-speed automatic transmission. According to the supposed spec sheet, that combo should net 20 miles per gallon in the city and 30 on the highway using regular-grade gas.

Finally, the rumormill swirls with talk that a turbocharged four cylinder displacing 2.0 liters and putting out 270 horsepower and 250 lb-ft will serve as the base engine for the ATS, mated up to an eight-speed automatic. Naturally, that combo will serve as the fuel mileage leader, managing an estimated 22 city/32 highway rating, though it's likely to require premium gas.

Certainly, all of this information is to be taken with a suitably sized grain of salt (mayhaps the whole shaker?), but it is in line with what we've been hearing for the last year or so. In any case, we ought to find out all the details in due time - Cadillac's ATS is expected to hit the market no later than the latter half of 2013 as a 2014 model.
GM is investing heavily in its Grand River Assembly plant. Recently, the automaker announced it's pouring $190 million into the Lansing, Michigan facility, and one of the models expected to be built there is the upcoming Cadillac ATS. The ATS will slot below the CTS and will be built in a range of body-styles. According to GM Inside News, the ATS will first be launched as a sedan, with a coupe and convertible to follow behind. Eventually, a V-Series version will also be produced.

GM Inside News also reports that they have verified a timetable for the release of the ATS variations. The sedan will be released in the fall of 2012, as a 2013 model. Nine months later, a two-door will be made available as a 2014 ATS model. Another nine months after that and a convertible ATS will hit the streets. And of course we'll get to see a 2015 ATS-V as well.

Rumor has it that the ATS will be available with a wide range of engine options, starting with a naturally-aspirated four-cylinder that will be standard, while the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a V6 will also be offered. For the V-Series, it's been said that Cadillac will stick with the V8 formula and shove an eight-cylinder unit under the hood of the ATS.
