Move over Jaguar XJ220. At 217 mph, your top end is just too slow. Hell, move over Batmobile. Why? The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/21/aston-martin-one-77-the-justifications-in-the-details/">Aston Martin One-77</a>, Britain's most expensive car ever, is now nearly its fastest. If not for the pesky, eternal problem of the McLaren F1 and its 241 mph top end, the One-77 would be the fastest production car in the history of Old Blighty. As it stands, or in this case <em>flies</em>, a One-77 has just crested 220 mph.<br />

Can the latest and no question greatest from Aston Martin go even faster? Probably, as AM was quick to point out, that the 220 mph velocity was achieved in "dry, but windy conditions." Never forget the amount of power this 7.3-liter V12 beastie makes - between 700 and 740 horsepower, and around 553 lb-ft of torque. For the sake of national pride, the McLaren F1 produced "just" 627 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. Obviously, the 2,514 pound F1 is much lighter than the 3,308 pound One-77, however, which actually makes 220 mph run all the more impressive. <br />
<br />
0-60 mph? Quarter mile? Lateral acceleration? We don't know yet, but we do know that Aston Martin will keep us up to date as soon as all that information gets logged. For its part, the matte gray beauty you see above is at a "top secret proving ground in southern Europe" where its being flogged about in anticipation of the One-77's mid-2010 release. If not for the &pound;1.25 million price tag (just shy of $2M Yankee bucks), we'd be losing sleep. On Friday we brought you our <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/21/aston-martin-one-77-the-justifications-in-the-details/">gushing reaction</a> to the $1.8 million Aston Martin One-77. We were able to stick our snouts over, under and inside the vehicle and it's simply bonkers. Bonkers in the very best way possible. Just a reminder -- the carbon fiber frame also doubles as a feeder for the intake plenums. Ridiculous. Almost as cool: the way the <em>7.3-liter</em> V12 rockets up its rev range. It's something you simply have to hear to understand. &pound;1.25 million. That's Brit-speak for <em>$1,800,000</em>, give or take. A staggering amount of money. More than a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/BugattiVeyron/">Bugatti Veyron</a>, more than a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/LamborghiniReventon/">Lamborghini Revent&oacute;n</a>. Quite simply the most expensive new car, well, <em>ever</em>. Er, well, it would have been if not for the $2.2 million <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/07/first-drive-bugatti-veyron-16-4-grand-sport-is-a-temple-of-zen/">Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport</a>. And for what? Before last night, we would have said nearly two million smackeroos gets you a widened DB9 with a large 7.3-liter V-12. Yes, there will be only seventy-seven hand built <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/AstonMartinOne77/">Aston Martin One-77s</a> made, but so what? That's just <em>way</em> too much lucre, filthy or otherwise. <br />

Aston Martin was good enough to invite us down to a post-<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/PebbleBeach/">Pebble Beach</a> showing of its new hypercar in the impressive vault room at Los Angeles' Galpin Motors. Curtains circled the display, the car was draped with a cloth and many of the city's wealthiest citizens (most had previously purchased an Aston Martin from Galpin) enjoyed <em>gratis</em> cocktails <em>mit</em> snacks. <br />
<br />
Before the covers came off they fired up and then revved the engine. <em>Whoa</em>. This was different. This was something special. The massive motor rapidly climbed through the range not like a normal big-bore V12, but more like an F1 car. Totally impressive. Finally the big Aston was revealed, and you know, it was still a nice looking car, but massively overpriced. And then they popped the hood.<br />

We found the Aston Martin One-77 tucked between hospitality tables like a manta ray brooding within a coral reef -- as if it were grudgingly consenting to being looked at. With a roofline that sits about four inches lower than a DBS, the minimal height and exceptional girth combine with a slew of pronounced features to create one angry car. <br />
<br />
Yet it does possess its moments of soft beauty: the engine bay is a case of stupendous craftsmanship and the carbon fiber rear suspension weaving its way through leather-trimmed panels is nothing short of delicious. Inside, the car is minutely detailed, and everything other than the white-backed center console gauges elicits a "Yes" from our hearts. Even better: there's still time to get one. <br />Aston Martin finally took the wraps off the first completed <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/One77/">One-77</a> this past weekend at the Concorso d'Eleganza on the shores of Lake Como and came away with the top design prize at the event. Aston Martin CEO Dr Ulrich Bez was on hand to show off the car that we saw in <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/06/aston-martin-one-77-uncovered-in-depth-on-whats-under-the-skin/">skeletal form</a> at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Geneva-Motor-Show/">Geneva Motor Show</a> in March. While the aesthetics of this new Aston have drawn decidedly mixed reviews, there is no doubt that it is a striking machine. The huge grille flanked by large air scoops is a departure from the classically beautiful Astons of the last 15 years and even goes well beyond the DBS. However, when considered in the context of its functionality, the appearance makes much more sense. By day two it had been be removed and replaced by the unfortunate Lagonda concept. The chassis had to be returned to the UK so that the bodywork and interior could be added. This week, the finished car had its coming out party on the shores of Italy's Lake Como, home to the rich and famous. <br /><br />The exterior was no surprise since we had already seen the styling buck and renderings, but this was the first time the finished interior had been shown. No doubt purchasers of the 77 examples will all have the opportunity to customize the finish, materials and color combinations before Aston Martin begins deliveries late this year. Hopefully, our friends at Aston Martin will give us the opportunity to take one for a spin before they're all gone. <br />Any time you spend $100,000 or more on a vehicle, it's clearly an emotional decision. It's hard to rationalize an expenditure of that magnitude on, say, a Bentley, when a Chevy Cobalt will get you to the grocery store just as easily. Sure, it's not as fast or luxurious, but it handles the task. So if emotion drives high-dollar car purchases, the car needs to appeal to more than just practicality.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/06/aston-martin-one-77-uncovered-in-depth-on-whats-under-the-skin/">As we learned when we visited Geneva, the Aston Martin One-77 is an engineer's dream</a>, but as the latest teaser video from Aston shows, it also plays to the owner's heart. Compared to a conventional Aston, the One-77 will be louder, more visceral and more connected to the driver. Instead of mass produced castings, suspension brackets are machined from solid blocks of aluminum and the tool marks are still visible. </small> <br />Automakers will typically come up with fantastic, attention-grabbing interiors for their show cars that never make it down the road from concept to production. But in the case of the One-77 supercar, Aston Martin has revealed the car in stages, with sketches followed by a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/02/paris-2008-aston-martin-one-77-partially-revealed/">partially-blanketed show car</a> at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Paris-Motor-Show/">Paris Motor Show</a> and a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/03/geneva-2009-aston-martin-one-77-almost-fully-revealed/">full mock-up, joined by a bare chassis</a> at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Geneva-Motor-Show/">Geneva Motor Show</a>. And yet we've still seen no interior, conceptual or otherwise. However, a leaked document from those busy beavers over at Aston Martin-Lagonda has been published by Dutch auto site 925.nl, including several renderings of the vehicle's cabin.<br /><br />Of course, these are still just sketches, but if they weren't for the concept car, then they're likely bound for production, and they look pretty sharp. They should for a $1.5+ million supercar. <br />At the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Geneva-Motor-Show/">Geneva Motor Show</a> this week, Aston Martin publicly showed its limited-edition <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/03/geneva-2009-aston-martin-one-77-almost-fully-revealed/">One-77</a> super-car for the first time. While the design is certainly attention grabbing, the machinery sitting next to it was perhaps even more so. On the first of two press days, the Aston stand was dominated by the first complete One-77 chassis laid bare for all the world to see. Resplendent in carbon-fiber and cast, forged and extruded aluminum, the skinless One-77 is an engineer's dream. <br /><br />Chris Porritt, Chief Program Manager for the One-77, took a few minutes to give us a guided tour of this remarkable example of engineering art. The mechanical bits of the One-77 are built more like the guts of an Le Mans Prototype racer than any typical production car. Of course, calling this a production car is a stretch anyway given that only 77 examples will be produced. Major automakers typically produce more prototypes than that for a new vehicle program. <br />Dr. Ulrich Bez may not be British, but as he revealed the Aston Martin One-77 today at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Geneva-Motor-Show/">Geneva Motor Show</a>, he paraphrased the classic Rolls-Royce performance description: The performance of the One-77 is "more than enough", as if there could be such a thing in a supercar. Nonetheless, this will be one seriously fast machine. <br /><br />What we saw here today for the first time is the completely exposed exterior and guts of the most expensive and highest performing production Aston Martin ever. Starting with the typical 6.0L V12 block, the displacement has been increased to 7.3L and the output is somewhere north of 750 hp. Zooming to 60 mph will come somewhere in the lower half of the three-second range and the car's top speed is high enough to be utterly irrelevant except for those seeking bragging rights. We also got to see the first completed carbon fiber and aluminum chassis on display with the body buck. We'll have an in depth article on the One-77's greasy bits in a couple of days. <br /><br />The only part we haven't seen yet is the interior, which will be coming later this year. In the meantime, start counting your pennies because Aston Martin is building only 77 examples of this remarkable car. <br />Later today in Geneva, Aston Martin will officially unveil the One-77, which represents all the brand has to offer in terms of craftsmanship and engineering. The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive supercar features a very special version of Aston Martin's 6.0L V12 engine that's been tuned by the legendary motor mavens at Cosworth. Enlarged to a full 7.3 liters of displacement, the One-77's V12 is a full 25% lighter than the engine on which it's based while producing in excess of 700 bhp. The One-77 also features a monocoque tub comprised entirely of carbon fiber, which helps keep its curb weight around 3,300 lbs. A unique inboard suspension system, six-speed sequential manual gearbox and carbon ceramic brakes at all four corners are just a few of the top shelf standard features that One-77 customers will be getting. Add it all up and Aston Martin expects a 0-60mph time of just 3.5 seconds and top speed over 200 mph. The One-77 will be the most powerful and fastest Aston Martin ever made and represent the brand's zenith. It'll be tough to top this one, that's for sure. <br />Selling million-dollar supercars isn't as easy as it used to be. While Lamborghini quickly <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/20/lamborghini-delivers-final-reventon-to-british-customer/">offloaded</a> its small run of seven-figure Reventons and Bugatti has gone through <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/15/bugatti-veyron-production-run-nearly-sold-out/">the bulk of its Veyron production</a>, Aston Martin may be finding it a bit more difficult to separate the obscenely wealthy from their millions.<br /><br />The One-77 is the big-ticket supercar in question, to be built in a limited run of 77 examples, with only six headed to the US, five staying in the UK and the remaining 66 <strike>ending up in the Emirates</strike> dispersing around the world. Previous reports circulating the interwebs suggested that the entire production run sold out almost immediately - before the car was even fully unveiled - but those reports may have been misleading. Although 100 potential customers reportedly expressed interest in acquiring the uber-supercar, the order books have apparently yet to be filled with buyers who've plunked down the &pound;200k desposit. But even in this economy, they're bound to sell out soon, so if you've got the cash to spare, you'd better act fast. Comparing it to the company's legendary limited production DB4GT Zagato, the One-77 is said to be the "Embodiment of Aston Martin." AM tell us it should feel like it's been tailored to the driver and that it has new technologies, exclusive components and handmade body panels. The talking heads call it a piece of art and then go on to describe how this piece of art will behave, with unbelievable performance, programmable control feedback and an exhaust note beyond compare. As we've reported before, only 77 examples will be built, all powered by a hand-built 7.0-liter V12 capable of pushing the carbon fiber beast from 0-60 in 3.5-seconds, with a top speed north of 200 mph. All for just &pound;1 million... and it's already sold out. The full video is after the jump. <p>Despite a slowing economy, Aston Martin is not shying away from tackling some high-priced territory. Its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/01/spy-shots-aston-martin-rapide-spotted-with-glass-roof/">Rapide four-door coupe</a> is on the way, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/23/aston-martin-debating-dbs-convertible-nomenclature/">as-yet un-named convertible DBS</a> is due imminently, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/24/spy-shots-aston-martin-v12-vantage-rs/">development of the V12 Vantage</a> continues, and it's<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/01/aston-martin-to-revive-lagonda-with-new-concept-in-geneva-09/"> re-launching the Lagonda marque</a> with some <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/05/first-lagonda-to-be-based-on-s-class/">new luxury machinery</a>. All the while the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/21/aston-martin-to-move-further-upmarket/">next DB9 and Vantage are tipped to go up-market</a>, but not before the ultra-premium One-77 lands in the hands of a few very fortunate customers. Only six in the U.S. to be exact, with just five destined to stay in the UK out of the total <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/14/aston-martin-one-77-already-sold-out-and-then-some/">production run of 77</a>. That leaves 66 for the rest of the world, and just where they'll all end up is open to speculation, but expect a fair few to be destined for emerging luxury markets in Asia especially. </p>
<p>Although the One-77 won't be officially unveiled in full until next year - we got a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/02/paris-2008-aston-martin-one-77-partially-revealed/">partial preview last month in Paris</a> - the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/28/new-round-of-aston-martin-one-77-shots/">first batch of pictures</a> is already out, and initial specs have now found their way onto the internet. CEO Ulrich Bez has confirmed that power will come from an artfully-crafted derivative of the company's existing 6-liter V12, bored and stroked to 7 liters and producing somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque. All that power will have to move just 1500kg, lighter than the 1630kg V8 Vantage, the 1760kg DB9 and even the lightweight 1690kg DBS. Despite the One-77's imposing silhouette, at 4576mm it will actually measure 133mm shorter than the DB9, but 196mm longer than the compact Vantage, while at a stout 1223mm high and a lane-dominating 1900mm wide, the supercar will also be shorter and wider than either the Vantage or the DB9. Bez claims that an all-out performance battle with the Bugatti Veyron isn't the point of the One-77, but a top speed well in excess of 200 mph is all but guaranteed.</p>

<br />Despite <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/29/aston-martin-one-77-more-pics-more-specs/">Aston Martin's efforts</a> to keep the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/07/early-look-1million-aston-martin-one-77/">One-77 supercar</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/02/paris-2008-aston-martin-one-77-partially-revealed/">under wraps</a>, four images have leaked out and we expect more to follow in the coming days.<br /><br />Viewed in profile, the One-77's silhouette is pure Aston, taking all the right cues from its predecessors and forming them into a slightly elongated and exaggerated form. The massive grille is an obvious nod to the Astons of yore, but the hood delves deeper than its DB9 and Vantage counterparts and benefits from four contoured strakes terminating into a set of air extractors. <br />If you're looking to be one of the lucky (and rich) buyers of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/AstonMartinOne77/">Aston Martin One-77</a>, you may already be too late. Aston claims that over 100 wealthy buyers have signed up for the One-77 supercar, though it plans to build only enough to satisfy the car's label: 77. Amazingly, those customers have dropped a &pound;200,000 deposit without ever having so much as seen a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/02/paris-2008-aston-martin-one-77-partially-revealed/">totally uncovered</a> photo of the British supercar. But hey, it's an Aston, so how ugly can it be? If you've got money to burn, we can think of few ways to better spend over &pound;1 million on an automobile, especially considering that it's rare enough to actually <em>increase</em> in value over time. It would help, too, if you could park and store a vehicle with a carbon fiber chassis, aluminum body, and 700-hp V12 engine, but that doesn't sound like much fun at all. One thing that can be gleaned from the rendering on the <em>TG</em> microsite is the headlight layout, with an inner row of LEDs leading back to an array that includes at least one additional cluster of LEDs. <br />Aston Martin said it would have a "property" here in Paris, and indeed it did.
