One man's junk is... well, you know. Watching the shiny metal grommets roll through his auto recycling plant in Brisbane, Australia, James Corbett doesn't appear to know the word "junk" when it comes to cars. He takes all of those leftover bits and makes superbly detailed sculptures of mostly vintage racers and, of all things, animals. None of the parts are bent or altered to help make the pieces, either. Corbett even built a full-size car out of parts and stuck a flathead V8 in it, and he still takes it racing.

Corbett has an exhibit coming up in London this month and then takes his show to Palm Desert, CA next year. If you don't get a chance to see the real things, we suggest you have a well-worth-it look at the images in our gallery below.

Here's what we love about Bentley. While workers at other automakers sit around and scratch their butts in their growing downtime, at Crewe, they put their spare time to good use. Back in March, we brought you news that Bentley's craftsmen were crafting bespoke furniture while they waited for production to pick back up. Now the British automaker has put its designers to work creating works of art.

The pool of artists in Bentley's styling department were given a broad mandate to create artwork inspired by their workplace, and 22 transformed everything from canvas to plexiglass, bronze to leather into an impressive array of pieces, all of which you can view in our high-resolution gallery below.

The collection will be auctioned off by Bonhams on December 1 to benefit The Christie cancer research center in Manchester. Full detail in the press release after the jump.

When we hear the phrase "contemporary artist" we usually say, "Just show us what you're doing because there's little chance we'll understand rationale." Garnet Hertz, the artist in question, is combining a Sega Outrun arcade console with an EVT America Electric Trike (a three-wheeled scooter), an iPhone, and custom GPS software. The result will be a drivable arcade game -- like on the road at up to 20 mph -- that overlays Outrun graphics on live GPS maps.

The GPS software finds the vanishing point of the road and then, in the manner of Google Maps' hybrid setting, puts the Outrun Testarossa and road into the live-action setting. The iPhone's internals keep track of progress and keep the screen moving in 'real-time.'

If you really want to know the rationales, they are the "Un-Simulation of Driving," and "GPS Navigation Parallax & Mixed Reality." Make of those what you will, just know they involve "obfuscation." Sadly, deception and inveigling weren't mentioned. You can check out the video after the jump, which is mostly a guy holding a laptop walking away from the camera.
You didn't really think it was going to stop with Krink, did you? Oh no. Mini and art have combined again on a limited-edition book and art project called "Wash Me." Starting with the idea of the "Wash me!" imperative scrawled into dirty cars the world over, ten artists that have never used a car as a canvas have "transformed [a Mini] into a transient work of art."

What does that mean? It means they painted a bunch of Minis lots of different colors and wrote (ironic?) things on them. And there were gorillas involved. Two, in fact. Or maybe it was one gorilla and Sasquatch. You can see for yourself in the video and press release after the jump, and the high-res gallery of images below.
New York artist KR begat the artistic style - and ultimately brand and trend - of Krink. Mini, combining its urban credentials with an aesthetic born from Queens graffiti, gave KR a Mini to Krink and put it on display in Hamburg last weekend. In case you didn't know, it is the specific theme of finely dripping paint, especially silver, that is Krink, and it has appeared on Nike and Prada and in the New York Times, among other places.
At this point Mini is getting so post-postmodern cool that pretty soon the brand is going to be able to bottle its own irony and sell it.
Minimalism Calendar -- Click above for high-res image gallery

Mini made a calendar. Or rather, Mini assembled a calendar with artworks chosen from among thousands submitted from around the globe. The calendar's theme is Minimalism, and the only rule for submissions was to include a silhouette of the car in the piece. For car calendar fans, there are no topless women - nor topless Minis, for that matter - slathered in oil...

The calendar presents the 12 works chosen by a team of judges that included Mini design head Gert Hildebrand. The works tend toward the funky and, of course, the modern, but if you're a Mini owner they'll probably make you happy just looking at them. You can check out three of the pieces in the high-res gallery below. For the rest of you who don't want a Mini but just want the art, you can find out more about the calendar at the Minimalism site and buy it for €21 ($31 U.S.) at the Mini shop.

Maserati garage design winners -- Click above for high-res image gallery

Maserati makes beautiful cars. In a contest they held with Architectural Digest, the home of the trident went looking for the best homes for those cars -- not the actual houses, but the garages that house their creations. Entries came in two categories, Existing and Concept, and were judged on "noted architectural element, uniqueness and individuality."

The winning existing garage could barely be considered a garage -- more like a living room where you park your car. The winning concept garage has three turntables that can place cars in three different positions depending on whether you're coming, showing off, or going. You can read the press release after jump and check out the stunning high-res images of the winners' designs below.

Gallery: Winning Garages of Maserati "Design Driven" Competition

[Source: Maserati]
Continue reading Maserati, Architectural Digest celebrate best real and concept garages

Maserati, Architectural Digest celebrate best real and concept garages originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Jul 2009 12:29:00 EST. That's one thing... but how about a whole country? Only in Japan, where the same famously zany locals fascinated with sailor costumes and neon lights on dump trucks have done it yet again. Only this time, their attention has shifted to manhole covers. Yes, manhole covers.

We don't know anything about this fad, how it began or how pervasive it is - we'd be glad to hear from you in our comment section below if you do - but from the look of the pinpointed map available at the link, it seems the craft has grown quite pervasive across the whimsical island nation. Check out a slew of our favorite examples in the gallery below, and try not to wonder how the artists didn't get run down by oncoming traffic while painstakingly completing their masterpieces.

Gallery: Japan's Manhole-Cover Art

[Source: ittemia.jp]
The wacky, wonderful world of Japanese manhole cover art originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 03 Jul 2009 12:58:00 EST. Salter wanted to create a race car out of polystyrene packing waste, and we guess it doesn't matter -- he did, and this is the result. We don't have <strike>much</strike> any information on the single-seater open-wheeler other than that it's on display at the John Ross Plaza Studio in Portland, Oregon. However, we did find out that Salter is "known internationally for his wry polystyrene packaging sculptures dubbed 'Styrobots'," and the styrobots are just as cool as this car which you can check out in the gallery below.

Gallery: Styrofoam Race Car

[Source: Notcot via Jalopnik]

Artist creates full scale F1 car from recycled styrofoam originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 26 Jun 2009 10:57:00 EST.
Style Your Garage door motifs - click above for a high-res gallery

A German firm called Style Your Garage creates posters for garage doors that make it look as if your garage is where the action is. F1 car, F-18 Hornet, exotic dancers -- these are some of the things you can put "in" your garage. If you've got a two-car garage, no worries: you can try out the quarry dump truck or biplane that will span both doors.

Made for the up-and-over garage doors common in Europe, they mount with velcro, can be adapted to fit sectional garage doors, and come in a standard size of 2.10 meters by 2.45 meters. Prices range from €199 to €399 for the double-door motifs, which isn't that much for a giant piece of wall art. The company can also turn a photo of yours into a garage poster, but you'll want to be careful with this; not everything can be blown up to 6.5 feet without looking... creepy. You can have a gander at some of the factory options in the gallery below.

Gallery: Style Your Garage Doors

[Source: Style Your Garage (via Jalopnik)]
Can't afford to park something cool in your garage?
Alistair Gibson's sculptures from F1 car parts - Click above for a gallery of images

Alistair Gibson spent 22 years in Formula 1 paddocks as a mechanic with teams like Benetton and BAR Honda. With decades of carbon fiber and shiny bits swimming in his head, it probably shouldn't come as a complete surprise that after leaving pit lane he has begun fabricating motorsports-influenced sculptures of fish.

Each fish has a body in carbon fiber and comes with a spec sheet detailing the specific parts added to it. The brown trout you see above has a tail fin made of floor stays and comes mounted on a plank from the underside of Jensen Button's 2006 Hungarian GP-winning car. The hammerhead shark has eyes from rear wheel tether gearbox side shrouds, and comes mounted on a gearbox pull rod - also from the 2006 Hungarian GP car.

There are no prices listed, but if you add Formula 1 pedigree, carbon fiber fabrication, F1 chassis parts, and the word "art," well, phrases like "their weight in gold" come to mind. If you're not in the art market right now, you can check out the gallery of sculptures, including a brown trout, hammerhead shark, mackerel, mako shark, and piranha, below.

Gallery: Alistair Gibson Sculptures

[Source: Carbon Art via Pistonheads]
Ex-F1 Mechanic Alastair Gibson brings racing materials to fish sculptures.
Perhaps along with the daring it has shown in its styling as of late, Acura has decided to flirt with bold commercial production, albeit arguably with more appealing results.

Not content with another dark, slick, lifestyle-rich spot for its RDX turbo, Acura has gone all Honda on us and created a spot that took 240 hours of shooting alone for thirty seconds of finished product. The Wall Art spot required seventeen painters using 456 gallons of paint to illustrate and re-illustrate a 60-foot by 40-foot canvas around a car that didn't move. The creative results can be seen after the jump.

[Source: YouTube]
Continue reading VIDEO: Acura RDX "Wall Art" commercial and how it was made

VIDEO: Acura RDX "Wall Art" commercial and how it was made originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Mar 2009 16:58:00 EST. People that sooner or later leave their unique thumbprints on the Internet. So it is with A.D. Maddox, a Jackson Hole, Wyoming artist who most certainly has cornered the market on Ducati 999 riding, plain-speaking, Catholic schoolgirl outfit wearing, bug splattering artistry.

In Maddox's own words, the basic approach she has taken to her craft is to "Strap the canvas onto the bike, start riding, and kill bugs. That was my M.O." Eloquently succinct, that. "See, I'm an artist, and I do what I do. I mean, how can I define being an artist? I am what I am?" Indeed. Maddox has been creating her "Bug Gut Paintings" for some time now, and her website displays her 2006 catalog of work which is evidently entirely sold out. Most of the abstract paintings are sized 11"x14" or 14x14" and were priced at $350.

Hit the jump for the video and more information, then check out Maddox's work in the gallery below.

Gallery: The Art of A.D. The reduction in General Motor's fortunes also means that Detroit's cultural institutions can collectively expect to lose more than $1 million in annual funding. In 2007, GM's worldwide giving amounted to $31.4 million dollars, with Michigan institutions alone receiving $12 million of that.

This year's giving will be nowhere near that amount. A final budget hasn't been established, but the GM Foundation has told groups like the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Michigan Opera Theater, and Mosaic, a youth group, not to expect any funding this year. An executive from the foundation said that bridge loan money won't be used for philanthropy -- that doesn't mean the arts won't get any funding; it just lets them know that they'll need to start looking elsewhere for alms.

[Source: Freep]
Trickle-down effect: GM Foundation slashes arts and cultural funding originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 10:01:00 EST. Tupac lives. And we have just discovered that M. C. Escher is also alive, well, living in Australia, and going by the name of Axel Peemoeller. Designer Peemoeller worked out the math to create, optically, directional signage that appears to hang in the air. Found in the carpark of the Eureka Tower in Melbourne, there's no technowizardy here, just a man with a can of paint and a few severely skewed letters. The result: mindbending. And bloody genius. When they're not busy building zippy little monsters remarkably ill-suited to their weather, they're... making art. English artist Ian Cook took a few remote controlled cars, drove them through paint, and then used them to paint a Camaro.

Called "Popbang Color" and on display now at the British International Motor Show, Ian even used GM RC cars to create the paintings. Next up will be a live demonstration of him painting a Chevrolet Lacetti World Touring Car, which requires, says Ian, "skill with the remote control cars." After that he'll be painting Autobots Playing Poker... (we kid...) And sometimes you simply have the word: "art." Why did Canadian Steven Laurie create the posi-track burnout machine? Because it's art. Somehow. What is it? It's a contraption with a small engine atop an axle, all of which is restrained by a "driver." The engine revs and the wheels spin, but with the driver holding things back, they don't go far and they leave long trails of rubber.

But this isn't dragstrip heaven. As you might imagine, with human power in charge of the proceedings, this isn't a 400-hp affair -- it goes pretty slowly, in other words. The track you see in the picture above took a few minutes to make. Nevertheless, it is something. If slow motion burnouts aren't your thing, you can check out his donut machine, boom tube, or his chainsaw with a tailpipe. Oh, Canada, indeed. Follow the jump to check out the video. Thanks for the tip, Eliot!

[Source: Hack A Day]
Continue reading The world doesn't need a tire-smoking, burnout machine, but it's got one

The world doesn't need a tire-smoking, burnout machine, but it's got one originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 Jun 2008 09:32:00 EST.
If you've ever lived in a cold climate, you might know the displeasure of having to scrape ice off your windshield and out of the keyhole to get to work. It's one thing when Mother Nature is the culprit, but it's quite another to deep freeze your wheels on purpose. But that's exactly what a couple of artists are planning to do in Michigan.

Sue Wrbican of George Madison University and Mary Carothers of the University of Louisville are preparing to display a circa-1970's Chevy Nova in a giant block of ice, which they'll display in front of the library at the Houghton campus of Michigan Tech. They've even enrolled the support of some teenagers from Hancock High School, who are using their shop class to craft the frame for the ice block into which the car will be placed before the water will be poured in. That ought to be enough to get the Nova onto Top Gear's "Cool Wall", if not right into the Sub-Zero section.

Now we present John Rooney, a Boston artist who creates set pieces of small, intricately detailed cars that have met their ends at the trunks of Bonsai trees.

It's called Crash Bonsai (or "art," take your pick), and Rooney doesn't spare any time in their creation. The cars aren't simply hurtled into Bonsais -- oh no -- "each model is unique, and individually disassembled, cut, melted, filed, smash, then reassembled to replicate a real fender bender." What's also cool is their versatility, as the little vehicles also "look great on coffee tables, kitchen counters, smashing into lamps and toasters." (However, as a Bostonite, Rooney should know what a "fender bender" is... and he should know a car plowing into a tree doesn't really qualify.)

There's a variety of cars to choose from, from a 1940 BMW 328 to a PT Cruiser, or you can commission your own. Prices start at $50 (minus the Bonsai or other immovable object of your choice). As much as we want to raise our eyebrows, we have to admit that it's... kinda like watching... a car crash... and we just can't turn away. Remember when they used to show these kinds of things in driver's ed videos as something you wanted to avoid? Yeah. Now it's merchandise. Vive la revolucion.

[Source: Winding Road]
Auto Art: little cars meet their little ends at little trees originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 24 Nov 2007 16:51:00 EST. Automotive body design is certainly art, but the expression tends to be curtailed by the demands of commerce. Design a car that leans too far towards pure art, and the market will reject it. The symbiosis of needs has served the automotive industry well for the past century. On the fringes are the folks who perpetrate art for art's sake against the automobile. Most of these works are less accessible, though sometimes, there's a consociation that successfully melds higher concept art with the automobile. We're not talking about growing grass on your Riviera here.

British artist Benedict Radcliffe has created a full size rendering of a Toyota Corolla, making the world a more surreal place. The work is essentially a line drawing of the car rendered in three dimensions. Cool. Radcliffe's previous wireframe Impreza was more in line with the pure art mindset, as the Corolla was commissioned for use in a video production. The white painted sculpture lends the photographs a surreal retouched look, and we're kind of bummed we weren't able to turn up the actual commercial, as the couple of shots of the car on set look impressive with the reflective black floor.
