<br />
We were more than a little excited to throw a leg over the new Aprilia Dorsoduro right after unloading it from the back of our trailer. After all, the last time we rode a supermoto bike from the Italian motorcycle manufacturer (<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/19/in-the-autoblog-garage-aprilia-sxv550/">SXV 550</a>) we had a blast backing the bike into corners and lofting the front wheel at will. Plus, the Dorsoduro certainly has plenty of streetfighter attitude when painted up in our tester's all-black color scheme.<br />
<br />
As such, we wasted little time firing up the V-twin engine, getting ourselves familiar with the controls and layout and setting out for a quick ride through the 'hood. Unfortunately, our excitement quickly turned into disbelief. The Dorsoduro literally tried to leap out from under us at every opportunity, and the throttle - seemingly little more than an on/off switch - was impossibly twitchy and difficult to modulate, almost as if we mistakenly filled the tank with Red Bull instead of 91-octane. In other words, first impressions weren't particularly positive. Fortunately, we had a couple of weeks to get it all sorted out, and our opinion of the machine slowly changed. How so? Click past the break to find out.<br />

<div align="center"><em><strong><small>Megan Fox on Aprilia RS125 - Click above to view either image in high-res</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />As you'd expect in the runup to one of this summer's most widely-anticipated movies, product placement announcements are rolling in fast and furious ahead of the June 24th launch of <em>Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen</em>.<br /><br />Included amongst the obviously large number of vehicles from General Motors will be an Aprilia RS125, a bike we happen to be rather fond of. In fact, seeing this machine once again reminds us how much we'd love to see the Italian motorcycle maker wrap a similar package around the excellent V-twin powerplant in its RXV and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/19/in-the-autoblog-garage-aprilia-sxv550/">SXV line</a> of bikes.<br /><br />Oh, and it's also an excuse to run these two images of Megan Fox. In leathers - all in the name of safety, we're sure. Two questions... where's her helmet, and what's up with Shia <strike>The</strike> LeBeouf's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/30/harley-davidson-gets-into-product-placement-in-new-indiana-jones/">tendency to ride pillion</a>?<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/megan-fox-on-aprilia-rs-125/low/">Megan Fox on Aprilia RS 125</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/megan-fox-on-aprilia-rs-125/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/megan-fox_aprilia_large_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/megan-fox-on-aprilia-rs-125/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/megan-fox_aprilia_large_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br />[Source: Aprilia]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/13/product-placement-alert-aprilia-rs125-featured-in-i-transforme/">Product Placement Alert: Aprilia RS125 featured in <i>Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen</i></a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sat, 13 Jun 2009 18:45:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>Aprilia RSV 1000 Factory Transformers livery - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />General Motors isn't the only vehicle manufacturer with an interest in promoting the upcoming <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/transformers"><em>Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen</em></a> flick, as evidenced by last weekend's AMA Pro Daytona SportBike at Road America in Wisconsin. Italian motorcycle maker Aprilia used the race to unveil fresh new livery for the RSV 1000 Factory race bike ridden by Ben Thompson, who currently sits 22nd in the points standings and finished in 41st position at the end of Saturday's race and 20th on Sunday. Naturally, you can expect to see a large Aprilia-shaped cameo in the movie, which is slated to hit a theater near you on June 24th.<br /><br />Of course, the most interesting development from Aprilia is the new V4-powered <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/22/officially-official-aprilia-rsv4-superbike/">2010 RSV 4 superbike</a>, which also made an appearance at Road America in Wisconsin over the weekend. Currently, the RSV 4 is doing battle in World Superbike competition, where rider Max Biaggi has scored 126 points and currently sits in fifth position in the overall standings. That's mighty impressive considering this is the bike's first year in competition.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv-1000-factory-transformers-livery/low/">Aprilia RSV 1000 Factory Transformers livery</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv-1000-factory-transformers-livery/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/aprilia_rsv1000_transformers_0013_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv-1000-factory-transformers-livery/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/aprilia_rsv1000_transformers_0016_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv-1000-factory-transformers-livery/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/aprilia_rsv1000_transformers_0003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv-1000-factory-transformers-livery/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/aprilia_rsv1000_transformers_0015_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv-1000-factory-transformers-livery/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/aprilia_rsv1000_transformers_0014_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Aprilia]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/08/aprilia-commemorates-i-transformers-revenge-of-the-fallen-i/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Aprilia commemorates <i>Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen</i> with special RSV 1000 R livery</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/08/aprilia-commemorates-i-transformers-revenge-of-the-fallen-i/">Aprilia commemorates <i>Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen</i> with special RSV 1000 R livery</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 08 Jun 2009 17:59:00 EST. <div style="text-align: center; font-weight: bold;"><span style="font-style: italic;"><small>Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2009 Aprilia Dorsoduro 750</small></span> <br /></div>
<br />The supermoto genre may have initially emerged when people began spooning 17-inch wheels and tires from road-going sportbikes in place of the larger-diameter hoops with knobbies that their dirtbikes came with from the factory, but things have certainly diverged from there. There's a big difference between single-cylinder machines like the Suzuki DR-Z400SM and much larger bikes like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/01/roland-sands-creates-a-custom-ducati-hypermotard/">Ducati Hypermotard</a>, despite the fact that both platforms are said to fulfill a similar purpose. Aprilia recently joined the ranks of manufacturers going after the higher-end supermoto category, and the SMV 750 Dorsoduro is finally set to join the firm's other lighter-weight supermoto machine, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/19/in-the-autoblog-garage-aprilia-sxv550/">SXV550</a>, in the American market. <br /><br />Aprilia's self-developed liquid-cooled V-Twin engine displaces 750cc in this application and offers up 92-horsepower, making it a natural competitor for the air-cooled 1100cc Hypermotard from Ducati. Suspension and braking bits are suitably up to the task, with 43mm inverted front forks holding wave-shaped disc brakes clamped by radial calipers. Wheelies and stoppies are sure to ensue. Get yours now in either black or red for $9,599. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-aprilia-smv-750-dorsoduro/low/">2009 Aprilia SMV 750 Dorsoduro</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-aprilia-smv-750-dorsoduro/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/a_dorsoduro750_lifestyle-1_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-aprilia-smv-750-dorsoduro/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/a_dorsoduro750_lifestyle-2_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-aprilia-smv-750-dorsoduro/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/a_dorsoduro750_lifestyle-3_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-aprilia-smv-750-dorsoduro/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/a_dorsoduro750_lifestyle-4_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-aprilia-smv-750-dorsoduro/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/a_dorsoduro750_static-1_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Aprilia]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/08/2009-aprilia-smv-750-dorsoduro-makes-u-s-debut/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>2009 Aprilia SMV 750 Dorsoduro makes U.S. debut</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/08/2009-aprilia-smv-750-dorsoduro-makes-u-s-debut/">2009 Aprilia SMV 750 Dorsoduro makes U.S. debut</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 16:58:00 EST. <br />Aprilia went out on a limb when it designed its brand-new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/08/aprilias-850-mana-gods-gift-to-motorcyclists/">Mana 850</a> by equipping the standard-style machine with a CVT shiftless transmission. The rest of the bike isn't quite as revolutionary, but interesting features such as a large storage unit big enough to house a helmet where the gas tank would normally sit and an electronic ride-by-wire system that features multiple throttle maps allow the bike to stand out as an excellent commuter. All of that technology, along with Aprilia's first in-house developed V-Twin engine, was most definitely expensive to develop, and parent-company Piaggio surely wants to recoup that money as quickly as possible. <br /><br />Variations on the Mana's basic theme are to be expected, and the first one is the Mana X concept bike that comes from the EICMA show Milan. While the same basic chassis underpins the X, everything the rider touches has been tweaked or completely redesigned. It's tough to pigeonhole the X with one particular label, as its design seems influenced by dirt trackers, scramblers and supermotos. Whatever the case, it definitely looks like it would be a blast to ride.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-mana-x-concept/low/">Aprilia Mana X concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-mana-x-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/aprilia_mana_x_large_6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-mana-x-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/aprilia_mana_x_large_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-mana-x-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/aprilia_mana_x_large_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-mana-x-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/aprilia_mana_x_large_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-mana-x-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/aprilia_mana_x_large_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Aprilia, <a href="http://hellforleathermagazine.com/2008/12/aprilia-finally-puts-mana-x-in.html">Hell for Leather</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/02/aprilia-shows-off-its-mana-x-concept/">Aprilia shows off its Mana X concept</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 02 Dec 2008 08:58:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>Click above for high-res gallery of the 2009 Aprilia RSV4</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />After numerous <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/22/aprilia-unveils-rsv-4-with-plans-to-go-superbike-racing/">spy shots and leaked details</a>, Aprilia has finally pulled the wraps off its upcoming RSV4 superbike. This is the machine that the Italian company will use to contest the Superbike World Championship in 2009 against the Ducati 1098 and the Japanese literbikes. To properly do battle, the RSV4 will make some 210-horsepower -- fully competitive with the best the series currently has to offer. While the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv4-racebike/">race-going RSV4</a> is an amazing piece of kit, it's the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-aprilia-rsv4/1049849/">street-bred RSV4</a>, which will come in both normal and factory guises, that's of the most interest... since you'll actually be able to purchase one sometime next year. <br /><br />Powered by a 999cc V-Four engine mated to a six-speed gearbox with slipper clutch, we expect the Factory to be on par power-wise with the Ducati 1098R, meaning about 180 horses or more. Coupled to a wet weight of 418 pounds the RSV4 will be one seriously fast machine. A ride-by-wire system will likely allow Aprilia to offer more than one engine map to adjust power for specific conditions. One of the more interesting bits of kit that will be standard across the line are the numerous chassis adjustments, including the ability to alter the swingarm position and the headstock angle. Styling-wise, the new RSV4 tips its hat to the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/26/in-the-autoblog-garage-aprilia-rsv-1000-r/">RSV 1000 R</a> that we tested earlier this year with its third <strike>eye</strike> headlight that mimics the shape of the old ram-air duct from the twin. The rest of the bike looks thoroughly new and appropriately awesome. We're not sure how much it'll cost, but we know we want one regardless.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-aprilia-rsv4/low/">2009 Aprilia RSV4</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-aprilia-rsv4/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/aprilia_rsv4_large_19_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-aprilia-rsv4/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/aprilia_rsv4_large_17_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-aprilia-rsv4/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/aprilia_rsv4_large_18_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-aprilia-rsv4/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/aprilia_rsv4_large_09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-aprilia-rsv4/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/aprilia_rsv4_large_23_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv4-racebike/low/">Aprilia RSV4 Racebike</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv4-racebike/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/aprilia_rsv4_large_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv4-racebike/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/aprilia_rsv4_large_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv4-racebike/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/aprilia_rsv4_large_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv4-racebike/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/aprilia_rsv4_large_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv4-racebike/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/aprilia_rsv4_large_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.aprilia.com/magazine_dettaglio.asp?id=1333">Aprilia</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/22/officially-official-aprilia-rsv4-superbike/">Officially Official: Aprilia RSV4 superbike</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 22 Sep 2008 16:57:00 EST. It is true that the Italian bike is down on horsepower when compared with its racier relatives from Ducati and especially against the inline four machines from the Japanese manufacturers. While the Big Four from Japan continuously improve their unique (but very similar) breed of liter-class sportbikes with completely new designs every few years, Aprilia has sat back and made very small and incremental changes to its V-Twin contestant, and though its acceleration is surely a tick or two behind the leaders, it is important to consider the fact that everything is relative in the world of liter-bikes. Remember, barring something truly special, any liter-class sportbike from the last decade is sure to be the quickest vehicle on any given road. So, what does the Aprilia offer to make up for its apparent lack of horsepower? Read on.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv-1000-r/low/">Aprilia RSV 1000 R</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv-1000-r/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/aprilia_2148_update_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv-1000-r/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/aprilia_2153_update_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv-1000-r/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/aprilia_2160_update_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv-1000-r/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/aprilia_2113_update_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-rsv-1000-r/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/aprilia_2120_update_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><strong><em>All photos copyright Jeremy Korzeniewski / Weblogs Inc.</em></strong><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/26/in-the-autoblog-garage-aprilia-rsv-1000-r/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>In the Autoblog Garage: Aprilia RSV 1000 R</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/26/in-the-autoblog-garage-aprilia-rsv-1000-r/">In the Autoblog Garage: Aprilia RSV 1000 R</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sat, 26 Jul 2008 13:02:00 EST. From its extremely compact yet very powerful V-Twin engine to its extremely uncomfortable saddle, this is a bike that demands attention from its rider. Also extreme is its ability to wheelie and perform stoppies, so much so that it must be ridden with great respect on the street. The Supermoto category is basically made up of off-road bikes equipped with just the bare essentials to be street-legal. Off go the knobbies and in their places are spooned grippy sportbike tires on 17-inch wheels. This bike fits neatly into that category and was created with maximum fun in mind; but does the SXV's extreme nature take the joy out of riding it on the street? That's what we set to find out when we borrowed one for our garage. Read on to see how it fared.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-aprilia-sxv550-1/low/">In the Autoblog Garage: Aprilia SXV550</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-aprilia-sxv550-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/aprilia_img_1973_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-aprilia-sxv550-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/aprilia_img_1999_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-aprilia-sxv550-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/aprilia_img_1912_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-aprilia-sxv550-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/aprilia_img_1977_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-aprilia-sxv550-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/06/aprilia_img_2006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">All photos copyright Jeremy Korzeniewski / Weblogs Inc.</span><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/19/in-the-autoblog-garage-aprilia-sxv550/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>In the Autoblog Garage: Aprilia SXV550</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/19/in-the-autoblog-garage-aprilia-sxv550/">In the Autoblog Garage: Aprilia SXV550</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 19 Jun 2008 12:28:00 EST. <p>Aprilia is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to <a href="http://www.racingaprilia.com//gp125_archivio.asp">small-bore 125</a> and <a href="http://www.racingaprilia.com//gp250_archivio.asp">250cc</a> road-racers, as well as in the 450cc <a href="http://www.racingaprilia.com//cross_archivio.asp">off-road</a> and <a href="http://www.racingaprilia.com//supermoto_archivio.asp">supermoto</a> categories. These successes have led the Italian company to branch out further, this time into the hotly-contested <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superbike_World_Championship">Superbike World Championship</a>. The machine it will be doing battle with is the RSV 4, a brand new design using a brand new engine. That engine is very different from the normal inline four-cylinder Japanese models against which Aprilia will compete, as it uses a V4 design with the cylinders canted 65 degrees apart. The one-liter engine produces "well over 200 HP" in race trim, and a street-tuned version should for forthcoming. It probably goes without saying that we are anxiously awaiting the start of the 2009 season to see how well a small manufacturer like Aprilia can compete against the big factory teams of the Japanese manufacturers. Even more important to us, though, is how well the street version will compete against the other liter bikes already for sale.</p>

<p>When Aprilia first unveiled their new Shiver and its 750cc V-Twin, they hinted that there would soon be larger versions of the engine available. <a href="http://www.motionparts.com/page.php?page=Aprilia_FV2_1200">Here they provide further proof</a> that they are serious about making their own engines by lodging a 1200cc version of the torque-pump in their carbon fiber FV2 1200 concept bike which was shown in Milan last week. Although the engine is production-probable, don't hold your breath for the rest of the concept, as the carbon chassis is likely very expensive to manufacture. Not only that, but appearing like a Confederate designed by KTM with all of their inherent sharp creases, it seems a little off-putting, although very attention-grabbing... perfect for a bike to be seen only on the show circuit. The front suspension is similar to the Hossack-designed system used on the new BMW K-Series of bikes and might look familiar to those of you who are used to seeing upper and lower A-arms on racing cars. </p>
<p>Despite the fact that the FV2 is likely just a means to show off their 1200cc V-Twin engine, we are not disappointed by it. We are glad to see Aprilia making their own engines are look forward to the liter-plus beasts to make it onto the street and into hooligan hands.</p>

Aprilia debuted its 850 Mana last year, and the bike has since gone into production. Hopefully, the Mana will make it across the pond and into American dealers too, because there are a lot of reasons to like the new Aprilia.<br /><br />The most obvious innovation is the automatic transmission, which uses a CVT design similar to what is available on Aprilia's own line of scooters, and even a few cars. Continuously variable transmissions have pulleys inside that can change diameter and thereby change the ratio. All of this happens automatically, unless the rider uses the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-850-mana/429693/full/">buttons on the handlebars</a> or the foot operated gearchange lever in its normal location off the left footpeg. Although Aprilia is known for making sportbikes featuring V-Twin engines, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-850-mana/429692/full/">90-degree twin</a> inside the Mana's steel trellis frame is the first streetbike engine designed in-house by Aprilia itself. Expect more bikes from Aprilia using variations of this engine. The fuel tank has also been moved <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-850-mana/429694/full/">under the seat</a>, leaving a storage container where the tank would normally sit. That storage area is <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-850-mana/429695/full/">large enough for a helmet</a>, making this an excellent commuter bike.<br /><br />So, is the Mana just the gift from heaven that you were waiting for? Let us know what you think in the comments!<br /><br />[Source: Aprilia]<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-850-mana/low/">Aprilia 850 Mana</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-850-mana/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/mama01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-850-mana/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/mama02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-850-mana/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/mama03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-850-mana/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/mama05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/aprilia-850-mana/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/10/mana04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/08/aprilias-850-mana-gods-gift-to-motorcyclists/">Aprilia's 850 Mana - God's gift to motorcyclists?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 08 Oct 2007 18:01:00 EST. With that in mind, we bring you additional coverage, this time of the Can-Am Spyder. AutoblogGreen <a href="http://www.autobloggreen.com/2007/02/12/can-am-spyder-official-site-is-live-view-our-gallery/">has a few details</a> of the design on their site, but for our Autoblog readers, we'll focus on the performance aspects of such a machine.<br /><br />The engine is rumored to be similar to the 60 degree V-Twin powering Aprilia sportbikes. Aprilia, in turn, is rumored to be focusing R&amp;D on a new engine of their own design, which would leave the door open for Can-Am to use the Rotax-designed engine in their own vehicles. The 697 lbs. vehicles should have well over 100 horsepower at the rear wheels, making its power to weight ratio particularly admirable. What's more, the handling should be similarly stellar, making good use of those wide tires on three contact patches and expected traction control and ABS brakes.<br /><br />Well over 100 horsepower at the rear-wheels. Less than 700 pounds dry. Interested? Save up $15 thousand and wait until April, when dealers will get their first stocks.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/can-am-spyder/low/">Can-Am Spyder</a></strong></p><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/can-am-spyder/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/06/can-am_3129_1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/can-am-spyder/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2009/06/can-am_3129_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/can-am-spyder/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/02/1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/can-am-spyder/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/02/2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://green.autoblog.com/photos/can-am-spyder/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autobloggreen.com/media/2007/02/3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br />[Source: Autobloggreen]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/02/12/can-am-spyder-view-our-gallery-and-visit-their-site-now-live/">Can-Am Spyder - View our gallery and visit their site, now live!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 19:03:00 EST. <p>With yet another summer of record gas prices looming just over the horizon, more and more Americans are turning in their wheels... or at least a couple of them. Sales of motorcycles and scooters are up 8 percent&nbsp;over 2005, and according to the American Motorcycle Association, 35 percent of its members intend to ride more this summer because of gas prices. </p>
<p>Of course, it's probably possible to poke a mathematical hole into this rationale with but a few pecks at the ol' calculator, unless one chooses only the most frugal of two-wheeled conveyances (and a look at the best-selling list, full of Harleys, indicates that this is definitely not the case). According to one dealer, "People are looking for reasons to justify that want, and gas prices do that." Not like there's anything wrong with that, of course; we'd just be a lot happier if new riders would get some training before hitting the streets so that the annual death rate&nbsp;reverses its<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/04/28/vehicles-get-safer-but-crash-fatalities-climb/">&nbsp;decade-long ugly trend</a>. </p>
