Among the numerous apps that Ford has added to its Sync AppLink system is the location-sharing service Glympse. After The app is installed on a smartphone and the phone is paired with the AppLink interface either through Bluetooth or USB, a driver just presses the Sync button on the steering wheel and says, "Send Glympse." With that, the vehicle's location is sent to the other parties he has enabled in the app.

Any 'Glympsers' can keep track of the vehicle on their own phones or on a map in a web brower and get updates via e-mail, text, Facebook and Twitter. There's a time-limit to 'glympsing' so that after a pre-set time the app will cease updating its location.

The app was introduced to the Mercedes-Benz A-Class last summer, but we won't be seeing Stuttgart's little hatch in our country for a while. The partnership with Ford gives US drivers a way to experience another OEM integration of what is sure to be our always-in-contact future. The press release below can tell you more about it.
Continue reading Ford and Glympse hook up to give Sync location-sharing technology

Ford and Glympse hook up to give Sync location-sharing technology originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 07 Jan 2013 10:45:00 EST.
Shortly after the New York branch of the American Civil Liberties Union created an app called Stop and Frisk Watch, in response to the law enforcement tactic of the same name, the ACLU branch in New Jersey has created a Police Tape app.

It does exactly what it says on the box: records audio and, if you choose, video, of an encounter. The app interface disappears when in action so that it can't be switched off by anyone who happens to glance at the phone and the recordings are stored on the phone in a place where it would take a "tech-savvy" officer to find them and delete them. Furthermore, the recordings can be automatically uploaded to secure ACLU-NJ servers so that police can't delete them later. The app also apprises users of their rights when in their cars, on the street, when at home, and when being arrested.

Whether or not you agree with the app, it's kind of crazy that we've gotten to a point where everybody feels they have to make recordings of everybody else and store them in Iron Mountain just to make sure that justice prevails. But at least this way you won't have to wear a helmet-cam. The app is available now for Android phones, with an iPhone version coming shortly. Scroll down to watch a rather strange ACLU-NJ video on how it works.
Continue reading ACLU launches phone app to help motorists secretly record police stops [w/video]

ACLU launches phone app to help motorists secretly record police stops [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 05 Jul 2012 11:31:00 EST.
Google Maps has reinstated the feature letting you know how long a trip will take in current traffic. According to Autoblog's sister site, Engadget, the previous algorithm didn't pass muster, so the updated calculations uses both historical and current traffic conditions to arrive at an estimated time of arrival. It appears on the journeys for which information is available beneath the no-traffic estimate.

If the map can't find information on your chosen roads, you can assist The Goog and your fellow travelers by turning on My Location if you have a Google Maps for Android. Your phone - and a bunch of others - will update home base as to your velocities and help fill in those traffic blanks.
Google Maps regains ability to estimate your trip duration with traffic originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Apr 2012 10:30:00 EST.
Because the Super Bowl isn't enough of a spectacle already, there will be 20 Chevrolet vehicles and a heap of other prizes up for grabs during the big game. General Motors has revealed the Chevy Game Time app, which, once downloaded, presents trivia questions and polls about what's happening during the broadcast. Get the right answer or the most common answer, and you're put in a drawing for one of those numerous gifts.

There are also instant-win opportunities so you don't have to wait until next month to be a winner. As to those 20 cars, each user that downloads the app gets a unique "license plate" and if your plate matches a plate on one of the Chevys shown during the game, you'll win a car.

Just when you thought manufacturers couldn't cram any more technology into a vehicle, CES rolls through Las Vegas to show off all-new levels of car-bound gadgetry. A company by the name of Rydeen hopes to produce a new range of stereo head units that run the Android operating system. The double-DIN units partner up with a touch-screen enabled rear-view mirror serve up all of the relevant applications we've come to know and love from our Android devices. Currently, Rydeen says it's just using the touchscreen rear-view mirrors as research tools, though a production version may hit the market by 2013.

That version will likely boast a more simple interface that should be easier for drivers to use without killing everyone else on the road. We're big fans of that plan, though we have to wonder about the viability of putting the touch screen in the rear-view mirror to begin with. Here's hoping Rydeen will turn to a traditional dash-mounted system in the future. Hit the jump to check out a video of the mirror for yourself.
Continue reading Android integration comes to your car's mirror [w/video]

Android integration comes to your car's mirror [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 Jan 2012 10:58:00 EST.
Last year at IFA, we had a chance to check out a beta version of Gracenote's MoodGrid, an Android tablet app that automatically creates a music playlist using a 10x10 grid with Positive, Energentic, Calm and Dark criteria placed on each axis. Select a place on the graph and it automatically creates a playlist based on your mood. Now, the app has been scaled down and ported into a Garmin head unit, which means MoodGrid could be coming to a major OEM as soon as sometime this year.

As shown at CES, the updated MoodGrid app has been halved, with a five-by-five display with the same four musical dispositions. Based on where you place the dot, it dials up the tunes to suit your mood, utilizing the tracks on your iPhone, iPod or Android device. Another tablet-based version was on hand that can also tap into subscription music services like Spotify, Rdio and MOG, making music discovery even more robust. Check out our brief hands-on video after the break.
Continue reading Gracenote MoodGrid could be in cars by year's end

Gracenote MoodGrid could be in cars by year's end originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Jan 2012 15:00:00 EST.
In the ongoing technology war between cops and speeders, the guys who can't drive 55 have a new trick up their sleeves: Crowdsourcing.

Radar detector gurus Cobra have announced a big upgrade to their year-old iRadar smartphone fuzz-buster, dubbed "iRadar Community." Cobra says users can now participate in real-time reporting of speed traps, speed cameras and other road hazards. The new functionality is integrated into the iRadar smartphone application, which controls a separate detector unit.

Cobra has also dropped the price of its iRadar system since it was launched. It now retails for $129.95.

The iPhone and iPod touch version of the new software will be released on Nov. 1, while Android users will have to wait until January 2012.
Continue reading Cobra introduces iRadar Community to crowdsource speed traps

Cobra introduces iRadar Community to crowdsource speed traps originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 29 Oct 2011 12:02:00 EST.
Now we're not suggesting that you're a lawbreaker, but if you're a social networker and you'd like to know where speedtraps are - for no reason at all - then Escort might be able to help. Makers of the Passport line of detectors, Escort has started a mobile app-supported network called Escort Live that features Bluetooth notifications.

When an Escort detector using a special Bluetooth-enabled cord - called SmartCord Live - registers a trap, it sends that info to the cloud, which then forwards that location to your smartphone to warn you of the trap if you're about to be in range. It can also identify red light cameras and other types of road surveillance systems.

The app works with certain Apple iPhone and Android handsets, and a subscription to the service through 2012 costs $79.95. That strikes us as rather pricy, but we suppose it's cheaper than a speeding ticket. Check out a video of it in action after the jump.
Continue reading Escort marries social networking and radar detection with Android/iPhone app [w/video]

Escort marries social networking and radar detection with Android/iPhone app [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 28 Oct 2011 16:56:00 EST.
BMW might've been the first to bring iPod integration into the car and fully commit to iPhone connectivity, but like nearly every automaker on the planet, they've been slow to bring the same functionality to Android. However, that's about to end with the release of the My BMW Remote app for Google's open-source OS.

Like it's iPhone counterpart, the app allows drivers to remotely lock and unlock their vehicle, determine its location, access climate control functions and flash the lights or honk the horn to find their ride in a crowded lot. Additionally, Google Local Search allows you to send points of interest to the car without having to enter it through the navigation system, and when the ActiveE arrives early next year, charge status will also be included. But don't look for it in the Android Market just yet.

BMW will be releasing the app later this year, and when it rolls out for Android, it will include real-time traffic information, something that will also be available for the updated iPhone app.

So what took BMW so long to adopt Android, the world's fastest growing mobile OS? In the release after the jump, BMW - like nearly every app developer on the planet - blames the massive amount of fragmentation of both screen sizes and Android versions out in the world, meaning testing and development took much longer than for the iPhone version.
Continue reading My BMW Remote app comes to Android

My BMW Remote app comes to Android originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Oct 2011 08:27:00 EST. Mazda wants to add another icon to your iPhone's menu with MyMazda, an app that lets owners pull up vehicle maintenance, service history and recall information for their vehicles in a few easy taps.

The app syncs with Mazda's Customer Connect service program and can send automatic alerts and updates to remind owners of service schedules. There's also GPS functionality that tracks down your car in crowded parking lots. MyMazda is a free download from the Apple App Store and before you ask, an Android version should be out before the end of the year.
Not everyone can compete in the Race of Champions. You have to be, you know, an actual champion of something. (That something being a professional racing series of some sort.) But us ordinary Joes can do the next best thing: pretend like we're champions while playing with our smartphones.

The organizers of the annual event, which brings a wide variety of racing talent together each year for head-to-head competition, is launching its own video game for iOS and Android devices. The game features various track layouts from past runnings of the RoC, and benefits from the input of professional racing drivers like rally veteran Michele Moutan and endurance and rally champion Marc Duez.
It's being developed by Hungarian studio Invictus, and is set to launch in app stores online later in October ahead of this year's race scheduled for December 3-4 in Düsseldorf.
You might be put off by BMW's vision for the future of mobility, but if you're unconvinced of the automaker's commitment to drivers, there's an app for that.

BMW's Ultimate Drive app for the iPhone and Android-powered smartphones is a prime example of how mobile technology can meld with driver engagement. The app - a free download from the Apple App Store or Android Marketplace - provides users with the best driving roads in their vicinity and the ability to add routes to the database for all to enjoy.

There's a brief tutorial when you open the app to explain the UI elements, how to find and add routes, along with a BMW-curated news feed and the ability to be alerted of new drives added in your area. You can also send your favorite routes through email or Facebook, and you can port the maps to another GPS device or app for turn-by-turn directions - one better than the Aston Martin Experience app we tested earlier this year. Hit the jump for all the details.
Continue reading BMW's Ultimate Drive app crowd-sources the world's best roads

BMW's Ultimate Drive app crowd-sources the world's best roads originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 18:30:00 EST.
With Android outselling Apple's iOS devices by a lofty margin, we've been asking every automaker when Android connectivity will finally come to cars. Automotive supplier Harman International has answered the call with its latest infotainment system, which integrates the Android Open Accessory Protocol to allow users to connect their Google-powered smartphone or tablet and control their devices through the head unit, steering wheel buttons or voice commands.

By adopting and implementing the Android protocol, Harman's systems have access to user's music, movies and navigation apps, along with SMS and email functionality. Other integrated apps - particularly nav and POI programs - are already available, including Harman's own Aha Radio app, which allows users to hear Facebook and Twitter updates, get customized news feeds, listen to podcasts, traffic and weather alerts and Internet radio streaming.

The protocol currently supports Android 3.1 running on tablets and 2.3.4 on smartphones, and the first automaker to bring the system into their vehicles is set to win big. And not just with geeks. Make the jump for the full details.
Continue reading Harman to bring Android integration to cars... finally

Harman to bring Android integration to cars... finally originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 17:58:00 EST.
Earlier this year, one poor, smartphone-toting driver was ticketed for going 40 miles per hour in 25 zone. But unlike the rest of us, he wasn't speeding. Through the use of Google MyTracks running on his Motorola Droid, a bit of spreadsheet geekery and a meeting with a judge, he was able to prove his innocence and avoid a fine.

Back in February, we outlined several similar apps that, through a bit of hackery, could get the job done. But Iconosys has done one better with the introduction of its My Max Speed app for Android.

The app tracks your exact speed through GPS data every five seconds, logging the results. A large display shows your current rate of travel, along with your highest speed in the past five minutes. All the data is compiled into a spreadsheet (accessible via Excel or similar apps) so you've got proof to show the police and the man in the black robe. There's also an option to post your current speed to Facebook providing a useful, if slightly opt-in-Orwellian, timestamp to share with your friends.

A free, ad-supported app is currently available through the Android Market or Iconosys' website, with the ad-free version running $4.99. Make the jump for the full details.
Continue reading My Max Speed helps you beat the fuzz in court

My Max Speed helps you beat the fuzz in court originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 02 Jul 2011 19:07:00 EST.
In conjunction with this week's Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple has updated its App Store Review Guidelines, and part of the new approval process includes a section that prohibits the inclusion of DUI checkpoints in iOS apps.

Section 22.8 states:

Apps which contain DUI checkpoints that are not published by law enforcement agencies, or encourage and enable drunk driving, will be rejected.

The updated terms come a few months after a group of U.S. Senators sent letters of concern to Apple, Google and RIM, asking the smartphone companies to remove any and all apps that would inform users of DUI checkpoints.

While developers might be able to remove the DUI stop functionality from their apps, most of the programs that identify law enforcement activity and speed traps are crowd-sourced, meaning users could submit the checkpoints themselves without the app's devs knowing what they're identifying.

Neither Google or RIM have modified their app review guidelines yet, but if history holds true, where Apple goes, so goes the industry...
Apple to reject apps that include DUI checkpoints originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 08 Jun 2011 13:00:00 EST.
Yesterday we got word that Ford was tapping Google's new Prediction API to provide location and routing services for its fleet of plug-in hybrids and full EVs. Today, Ford's engineers are speaking at the Google I/O developers summit and they've released a video explaining how the system works and how they plan to implement it.

You can get the full details in our previous post, but the short-and-sweet version is this: Ford drivers can opt-in for the service, which tracks their daily driving routine, and, after building a database of destinations and waypoints, the system provides drivers with more efficient routing to optimize their powertrain, reduce range anxiety and decrease commute times. We've snagged a handful of slides from Ford's presentation and you can check out the full video after the jump.

Continue reading How Ford is using Google's Prediction API to increase efficiency

How Ford is using Google's Prediction API to increase efficiency originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 11 May 2011 18:28:00 EST.
Audi is rolling out a new roadside assistance app for owners equipped with an iPhone, Blackberry or Android device, and drivers with older Audis can get in on the action as well.

Once you've download the app from the corresponding store, you enter your VIN and some basic personal information, and get access to Audi's roadside assistance program supplied by Allstate. Jump-starts, fuel delivery and towing are included in the service - free for new owners and requiring a fee for older models. The app also includes a dealer locator and taps into your smartphone's GPS functionality to pinpoint your location.

The Curve and Bold are the first two Blackberrys supported by the app (download here), with the iPhone and Android versions available at the Apple App Store and Android Market, respectively. Jaguar shows off next generation Blackberry interface - Click above to watch the video

Jaguar trotted out a modified version of its XJ to Blackberry World 2011, RIM's international developer's conference, with a prototype smartphone integration system developed in conduction with Denso, RealVNC and RIM.

The setup works much like Terminal Mode, porting the smartphone's (in this case, a Blackberry Torch) UI directly into the eight-inch screen mounted on the dash. Rather than displaying a watered-down interface, the "Connect and View" system allows users to interact with the exact UI through the touchscreen, mirroring all the functionality of the Blackberry - from maps to apps to the music interface - along with softkeys to replace the device's physical buttons. The system also allows Jaguar to block apps and functionality that could be distracting to the driver. The VNC protocol is transferred over USB and keeps the phone constantly charging, while audio is streamed over Bluetooth. Connect and View has been developed specifically for the Blackberry, but Jaguar claims the system is device-agnostic, so Android and Windows Phone 7 versions could be in the cards. But don't hold your breath for iOS implementation.

Jaguar says the system could come to market as early as next year and our compatriots at Engadget got a hands-on with the system at the show. Check it out after the jump, along with more details on Connect and View and Jaguar's latest iPhone app - "Driven Intelligence" - that's available as a free download from the Apple App Store.

Word came down from on high that a handful of automakers, a few consumer electronics manufacturers and two suppliers had joined forces to create the Car Connectivity Consortium. The underlying purpose: to begin standardizing in-vehicle connectivity solutions ranging from Nokia's awkwardly-named "Terminal Mode" to Near Field Communications (NFC) and wireless charging capabilities.

In a world where platforms, devices and vehicle software runs the gamut from bleeding-edge (your smartphone) to bled-out (your two-year old, OEM-supplied navigation system), The Consortium has the potential to meld ease-of-use with constant connectivity. But there's a problem: two of the biggest names in mobile technology - Apple and Google - aren't in on the party. So is The Consortium dead before even it issues its next press release?

Jealous of your Android-toting friends with their slick Google Maps Navigation service? Well, a new GPS app has arrived for the iPhone 4 and it's also free... for 30 days.

TeleNav has released a new version of its GPS app for the iPhone and in addition to providing the usual navigation and POI searches, the constantly-updating app allows users to get restaurant and service ratings, reviews and other information directly through the app. But naturally, there's a rub.

The app is free for 30 days and after that you're charged either $21.99 for a year of service or pay-as-you-go for $2.99 a month. If you opt to keep those few ducats in your pocket, you can still use the GPS mapping and local search - the same as the pre-installed Google Maps application. And if you're packing an Android device, the TeleNav app is available as well, but only if you're hooked up with Verizon and are willing to shell out $19.99 a year before the end of the month. After that, the service goes up to $39.99 each year. Hit the jump for the full details and pick up the iPhone app at the Apple App Store or the Android version through the Android Market.
Continue reading TeleNav GPS comes to iPhone 4... for a price

TeleNav GPS comes to iPhone 4... for a price originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 23 Mar 2011 08:58:00 EST.
