It could be argued that Mercedes-Benz' AMG division -- more than any other brand -- is culpable for perpetuating the horsepower wars. Not that we're complaining, mind you, but sooner or later, consumer demands for environmental responsibility will catch up even with these stratospheric performance automobiles. The power-crazed tuners at the Benz performance division can see the writing on the wall, and are reportedly preparing to do something about it. More than one thing, actually.<br />
<br />
First up is the electric version of the SLS, AMG's first in-house developed product. Confirmation came this past summer that an <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/16/officially-official-mercedes-to-produce-electric-sls-gullwing/">electric SLS</a> - with the equivalent of 526 horsepower and 649 lb-ft of torque on tap - would see production, although no launch date has been revealed at this point. There's no telling if the electric powertrain in the green gullwing will foreshadow the trickle-down effect into other vehicles, but we'd hardly be surprised.<br />
<br />
What could end up powering more commonplace future AMG products, however, are diesel engines. The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/25/enter-the-rumormill-amg-considering-diesel-power/">possibility</a> was first mooted nearly two years ago, and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/10/amg-boss-confirms-future-hybrid-and-diesel-plans/">confirmed</a> as a possible course of action a bit over a year ago by AMG boss Volker Mornhinweg. According to the latest reports, AMG is still toying with the idea, but given the torque-heavy capacity of modern diesels - German ones, especially - we could be looking at oil-burning performance Mercedes before we know it.<br />

<br />Saying that "only a fool would ignore" the emissions of a new vehicle and the current global economy, AMG head-man Volker Mornhinweg realizes that it can't keep building gas-guzzling supercars with reckless abandon. Not that the company will lose its performance edge, mind you. In fact, hybrids and diesels could offer a meaningful performance boost if tuned properly. How so? Torque. Diesel engines are known for their massive axle-shreading twist, and electric motors, an essential part of any hybrid powertrain, make maximum power right off idle, allowing for an internal combustion engine that's tuned for stratospheric revs. <br /><br />In a recent interview with <em>CAR</em>, the notion of fitting a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter oil-burning V6 inside the C class was kicked around. Mornhinweg suggests such a vehicle is a distinct possibility as AMG moves forward. Hybrid technology could be based on the new drivetrain powering the recently-unveiled <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/17/mercedes-benz-s400-bluehybrid-unveiled/">S400 BlueHYBRID</a>. No matter what the future holds, we can be sure that the AMG crew is obviously <em>not</em> made up of a bunch of fools, and will therefore continue to offer cars with the highest performance pedigree, regardless of what's underhood.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl65-amg-black-series-live-shots">2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series Live Shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl65-amg-black-series-live-shots/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/sl65blackserieslive_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl65-amg-black-series-live-shots/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/sl65blackserieslive_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl65-amg-black-series-live-shots/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/sl65blackserieslive_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl65-amg-black-series-live-shots/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/sl65blackserieslive_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl65-amg-black-series-live-shots/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/08/sl65blackserieslive_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/News/Search-Results/Industry-News/AMG-plans-greener-cleaner-performance-cars/?content-block=1">CAR</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/10/amg-boss-confirms-future-hybrid-and-diesel-plans/">AMG boss confirms future hybrid and diesel plans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 10 Oct 2008 13:27:00 EST. Audi's dominance of LeMans with its R10 TDI and the recent unveiling of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/13/detroit-2008-audi-unleashes-its-diesel-monster-the-r8-v12-tdi/">R8</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/15/detroit-r8-deciphering-the-audi-v12-tdi/">V12 TDI</a> concept might be giving Mercedes a reason to turn towards oilburners for some of its high-po offerings. AMG has made a name for itself by providing, among other things, torque-rich engines that sometimes have to be electronically limited due to their tire (and differential) decimating potential. <em>AutoExpress</em> supposedly has it on good authority that plans are in the works to offer diesel models with an AMG badge, but both Mercedes and <em>AE</em> failed to provide any details about what vehicles or engines would be used. It might be a forgone conclusion that new CAFE standards in the U.S. are causing automakers to rethink their performance offerings, but in the meantime, we're going to throw this in the rumormill and see what comes out the other end.<br /><br />[Source: AutoExpress]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/25/enter-the-rumormill-amg-considering-diesel-power/">Enter the Rumormill: AMG considering diesel power</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 25 Jan 2008 11:27:00 EST.
