As we prepare to flip our calendars from 2011 to 2012, it's time to say goodbye to a handful of vehicles that are being sent to the Great Parking Lot In The Sky before the 2012 model year completely takes hold. And while we're not exactly upset about having to bid farewell to things like the Mitsubishi Endeavor, Mazda Tribute or Chevrolet HHR, there are a few vehicles that we're truly going to miss.

The Mazda RX-8, for example, has grown to be one of our favorite sports cars since its introduction in 2003. We love its lightweight construction, high-revving rotary engine and surprisingly functional suicide door design. It's kind of like a Miata with a roof and rear seats. Speaking of the Miata, Tesla's two-seat Roadster - the automaker's first production vehicle - proved to us that open-top motoring can be thrilling even with a stack of batteries driving the wheels.

We'll miss the Honda Element and its rugged, utilitarian nature. We'll miss the Volvo V50 and its capacious cargo area made for Ikea runs. And we'll really miss those large lords of luxury, the Cadillac DTS and Ford Crown Victoria. We've already said goodbye to the faithful but overripe Ford Ranger, and as ridiculous as the BMW X6 ActiveHybrid was, it was a shockingly good-to-drive electrified crossover.

There are plenty more models that won't be making the journey to the 2012 model year, so have a look at the full list in our attached image gallery, then let us know which ones you'll miss (if any) in the Comments.
Say 'goodbye' to these cars and trucks for the new year originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 12:30:00 EST.
The next-generation Nissan Altima mid-size sedan will be the first Nissan vehicle equipped with the automaker's first-ever, in-house developed, front-wheel-drive hybrid system. The hybrid setup, due in 2013, will be replace the Toyota-based system, which Nissan used in the now-axed Altima Hybrid, according to Masayuki Yasuoka, a senior exec in Nissan's next-generation powertrain group.

Nissan's upcoming gas-electric setup will be loosely based on the hybrid system found in the rear-wheel-drive 2012 Infiniti M35h, meaning it will feature a two-clutch, single-motor, lithium-ion battery setup. But instead of the 3.5-liter V6 engine that powers the M35h, the Altima Hybrid will likely pack a surpercharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder powerplant, mated to a new, advanced Xtronic continously variable transmission.

All this intel was reportedly revealed during a recent test drive at Nissan's Oppama proving grounds in Japan. Yasuoka declined to comment on which Nissan model would get the in-house developed hybrid system, but the Altima seems the most likely candidate.
Next-gen Nissan Altima Hybrid to feature supercharged 2.5L engine, advanced CVT, li-ion battery originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 13:02:00 EST.
There may not be a Nissan Altima Hybrid for the 2012 model year, but that doesn't mean it won't return as part of the sedan's next generation lineup. According to Japan's Nikkan Kogyo business daily, Nissan is reportedly developing a new Altima Hybrid based on the automaker's in-house hybrid technology, currently used in the Infiniti M35h.

Of course, the gasoline/electric system will need to be altered before it slots into the next-generation Altima. Nissan's current hybrid architecture is made up of a 3.5-liter V6 and rear-wheel drive in the M35h, but in the Altima, this system will be adapted for four-cylinder, front-wheel drive use. In talking to Automotive News, a Nissan spokesperson says that the automaker is committed to expanding its hybrid lineup, calling the front-drive/four-cylinder application "the most effective way to increase mileage in larger D-segment vehicles and above."

Currently, the Infiniti M35h is the only hybrid vehicle in Nissan's greater portfolio, and is the first vehicle to use a hybrid system developed solely in-house. The Altima Hybrid, introduced in 2007, was powered by a Toyota-sourced hybrid drive system.
Nissan adapting hybrid drivetrain for next-gen Altima Hybrid originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Jun 2011 10:58:00 EST.
If you've ever wanted to purchase a Nissan Altima Hybrid, now's the time. The 2011 model-year Altima Hybrid marks the vehicles last hurrah. According to Kicking Tires, the Altima Hybrid suffered dismal sales in its lifespan, mostly due to the fact that the vehicle was only sold in a handful of states (those that stuck to California's stricter emissions standards), unlike its main competitors.

Originally launched in 2007, the Altima Hybrid was Nissan's first foray into the gas-electric arena, using a Toyota-derived hybrid drive system. According to the EPA, the Altima Hybrid is rated to achieve 33 miles per gallon in combined driving. Not bad, but quite weak when you consider that 40 mpg is the new benchmark.
Nissan Altima Hybrid axed for 2012 model year originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Jun 2011 13:59:00 EST.
Remember that small, grainy photo of the refreshed-for-2010 Nissan Altima that was making the rounds earlier this month? Forget it - because the official pics, pricing, and details are all here.

For 2010, Nissan's pivotal midsizer receives a modest but effective new bit of front clippery, including a new grille, bumper, and hood. Additional exterior changes are mainly limited to things like alloy wheel patterns and paint choice.

Inside, expect alterations that include reworked option package groupings, new interior fabrics and trim, and so on. On the infotech front, a new nine-speaker Bose stereo will be available incorporating things like iPod connectivity, Bluetooth telephony, XM, and a rearview camera visible from its 4.3-inch display. Those wishing to spend a few more sheckels can opt for a next-gen navi with a 6.5-inch touchscreen setup, and it includes everything from the usual XM add-ons (NavTraffic, NavWeather) to speed limit advisories and a built-in Zagat's guide for stranded foodies. On the entertainment front, it also includes a 9.3-gig drive for ripping tunes, Bluetooth streaming audio and DVD player functionality.

Underneath, all 2010 Altima models get standard stability control whether they have two or four doors, and the 3.5 SE trim designation has rather curiously been ditched in favor of 3.5 SR.

Pricing for the sedan starts at $19,900 for the 170 horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder S when paired with a CVT gearbox and climbs to $24,520 for the 270 hp, 3.5-liter V6 SR model, also with CVT. Want a third pedal? Prepare to lose a couple of doors - the 2.5 S coupe with a six-speed manual starts at $22,440, and the SR coupe with the 3.5-liter manual runs $29,600 - curiously, that's $2,330 more than the CVT model even though the same transmission is cheaper than the shift-it-yourself gearbox in four-cylinder guise. Last, but not least, if you're in the market for an Altima hybrid, expect to pony up $26,780 before options.

Will these changes be enough to keep the Altima in the thick of the family sedan hunt against perennial adversaries like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Chevrolet Malibu, and Mazda6? The Japanese automaker came out with a very capable Altima hybrid last year, but it was Toyota technology purchased to help Nissan look good in the short term. Nissan has been betting most of its R&D dollars on electric vehicles, and the fruit of its engineering labors will be first seen stateside in 2010. It's important to note that Nissan intends to launch the technology here in the States, which is significant because Japanese automakers typically launch new technology in their home market first before U.S. customers ever see it.

Nissan hasn't revealed much about the vehicle besides a 2010 release date, but we do know that the automaker is working to install charging stations in many urban parking garages and railway stations in the U.S. A robust EV charging infrastructure will quell critics' worries that electric vehicles' limited range will prevent the technology from becoming a mainstream answer for gasoline power. It'll be interesting to see if Nissan can surprise the car-buying public with a game-breaking EV before GM and Toyota can deliver the Volt and plug-in Prius.

[Source: Detroit News]
Nissan knee deep in the electrictrification race originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 Jul 2008 17:03:00 EST. Nissan signed a deal with Toyota back in 2002 to license its Hybrid Synergy Drive technology for use in the Altima Hybrid, but will be dropping the Toyota bits as soon as an in-house team can develop its own hybrid technology. Meanwhile, the Altima Hybrid will be sold with Toyota technology in only eight states, which include California and seven other northeastern states that have adopted California's strict emissions regulations. Nissan announced today that the car will carries a base price of $24,440.

We've got more to say on the Nissan Altima Hybrid after the jump, along with Nissan's official press release.

[Source: Nissan]
Continue reading Nissan Altima Hybrid starts at $24,400 for the few who can buy it

Nissan Altima Hybrid starts at $24,400 for the few who can buy it originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 30 Jan 2007 15:57:00 EST. The electric car is being developed completely in-house and will use lithium-ion batteries to store its charge, which should last long enough for about 120 miles of travel. AutoblogGreen tells us that the car will have twice the range of the Nissan Hypermini EV (shown above), a small fleet of which were leased to the city of Pasadena, California back in 2000 but have since been "killed" by the company.

Nissan will also end its short alliance with Toyota, the only fruit of which was the use of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive in the recently unveiled Altima Hybrid. In the future, Nissan will use a hybrid system of its own, developed in-house. The new hybrid-system should be ready by 2010 also and be used in compact cars, as well as likely replacing the Hybrid Synergy Drive in the Altima Hybrid.

[Source: AutoblogGreen and GreenCarCongress]
Plug it in, plug it in: Nissan to sell electric car in 3 years originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Nov 2006 15:04:00 EST. The car is the first gasoline-electric hybrid for the automaker, and it will be greeted in the marketplace by competitors from Toyota (whose hybrid technology it uses), Honda and GM.

If you live outside of California or the Northeastern United States, you're going to be out of luck if you want one, as Nissan is only offering the car for sale in these 8 states: California, New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Maine, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. The car will be built at Nissan's Smyrna, TN manufacturing facility.

We'll bring you full details on the Altima Hybrid when Nissan releases them next week. AutoblogGreen will also be following the story closely.

[Source: PR Newswire]
Nissan to unveil '07 Altima Hybrid one week from today originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 27 Sep 2006 14:01:00 EST.
