<br />
Imagine you're a male (Autoblog surveys say most of you are, so this shouldn't be hard). You've been invited to the Playboy Mansion for their annual Halloween party. You arrive, grab a flute of bubbly, get introduced to the crusty remains of Hugh Hefner and after a few minutes lay eyes on the most beautiful specimen of redheaded femininity the world has ever seen. You fight your knees from buckling, walk over and give it the ol' college try. Miraculously, you hit it off. She's entertaining, interesting and a joy to see and be seen with. One thing leads to another and you make your way upstairs into one of Heff's exotically appointed love dens.<br />
<br />
You're ready to embark on one of the most pleasurable experiences of your life when... there's no spark. No connection. No chemistry. You use every trick in the book to make things work, but to no avail. Despite her arsenal of attributes, this exquisite example of sensuality just doesn't "do it" for you.<br />
<br />
If you can understand that scenario, then you can understand our brief, uninspiring stint with the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/09/alfa-romeo-8c-competizione-quick-spin/#continued">Read on</a> for more.<br />

With that in mind, why is the world's hottest Alfa sporting a "Got Milk?" mustache? Because the Photoshop warlocks at Britain's <a href="http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/239929/new_alfa_8c_gta_is_here.html">favorite automotive tabloid</a> have no idea what the new 8C GTA is actually going to look like. Here's what we <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/07/more-details-surface-on-alfa-8c-gta/">think we know</a>. Alfa Romeo is going to release a carbon fiber intensive 8C Competizione variant called the GTA to celebrate the marque's <span id="intelliTXT" name="intelliTxt">centenary next year. <br />
<br />
Thanks to all the exotic weave, the GTA will be over 300 pounds lighter</span> than the "regular" Competizione, and with a new ECU and stouter internals, the 4.7-liter F430 derived V8 should produce more than 500 horsepower -- just in time to not upstage the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/28/officially-official-ferrari-announces-the-458-italia/">458 Italia's 562 hp</a>. All that power will get neutralized by optional carbon-ceramic stoppers and naturally, expect the GTA's suspension to be much stiffer than the current car's GT tuning. <br />
<br />
If it sounds like Alfa might be considering a return to the race track we can only give the thumbs up, smile and mutter under our breath, "about time." And it might help explain the white mouth. Price? Over $300,000. How many? Just 100 examples, total. We're expecting to catch an actual glimpse of the 8C GTA at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Geneva-Motor-Show/">Geneva Motor Show</a> this coming March.<br />

<br />If you're hoping to get your hands on an Alfa 8C Spider, well... take a number, because really - who doesn't? The open-air version of the highly coveted - and almost universally admired - 8C Competizione, the 8C Spider is a product of pure demand. But with only 500 examples set to be produced and just 35 of those destined for American shores, only a handful of eligible parties will get them. And those Yanks who are lucky enough to do so do will have to pay at least $299,000 for the privilege. <br /><br />That list price alone - confirmed to Autoblog courtesy of Maserati North America (which is handling the model's distribution) - makes the 8C Spider the most expensive production Alfa ever. But with demand far outstripping supply, you can bet most of them will be trading hands at far higher prices than that - at least in the short term. That's is no mean feat considering present economic conditions.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2008-alfa-romeo-8c-spider/low/">Alfa Romeo 8C Spider</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2008-alfa-romeo-8c-spider/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/080407_ar_8cspider_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2008-alfa-romeo-8c-spider/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/080407_ar_8cspider_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2008-alfa-romeo-8c-spider/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/080407_ar_8cspider_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2008-alfa-romeo-8c-spider/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/080407_ar_8cspider_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/geneva-2008-alfa-romeo-8c-spider/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/001-aealfa-8c-spider_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Maserati]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/21/300k-alfa-8c-spider-the-most-expensive-alfa-romeo-in-history/">$300k Alfa 8C Spider the most expensive Alfa Romeo in history?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 21 Jul 2009 16:55:00 EST. Due to an incorrect torque setting on the front and rear suspension upper and lower ball joint nuts, Maserati is recalling 7,912 vehicles in the U.S. They include the 8Cs that have made it over here (thought to number 88), as well as GranTurismos and Quattroportes from the 2008 model year. <br /><br />If unchecked, the ball joint nuts will come loose, and that will cause problems ranging from steering wheel vibration to separation of the steering arm. That, unsurprisingly, "could result in a loss of steering capability," which usually leads to a crash. The recall should begin next month, and you can get in touch with Maserati to find out more at 1-201-816-2600.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione-2/low/">2009 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione-2/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/08/061025_ar_8c_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione-2/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/08/061025_ar_8c_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione-2/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/08/061025_ar_8c_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione-2/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/08/061025_ar_8c_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione-2/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/08/061025_ar_8c_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=140406">Edmunds</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/25/alfa-romeo-8c-competizione-being-recalled-over-ball-joints/">Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione being recalled over ball joints</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 25 Jan 2009 15:36:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong>Click above for high-res gallery of pics of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione</strong></em><br /></div>
</small> <br />It looks like the rest of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/09/29/paris-motor-show-world-premiere-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione/">Alfa Romeo 8C Competiziones</a> are starting to get into customer hands since that first one was delivered to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/13/jim-glickenhaus-gets-first-us-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione/">James Glickenhaus</a>. Last weekend at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/09/5th-annual-motor4toys-event-draws-thousands-for-a-great-cause/">Motor4Toys</a> we just missed a red one, but it happened to show up this morning at our weekly gathering in Irvine, California. The car drew a huge crowd, who universally praised it for its voluptuous good looks and gorgeous red paint job. The owner drove in and parked, revving it a bit to treat the onlookers. Although we've had the great pleasure of seeing the car in person a few times already, it is still stunning. And it was fun to watch the others seeing it for the first time. This is truly mobile art. Drew and Jonathon happened to be at the show this morning as well and are trying to convince the owner to let them take it for a spin. Hopefully they get their wish, but until then, check out the gallery to see some of my pics along with Drew's typical photographic magic.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/alfa-romeo-8c-competizione-in-the-states/low/">Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione in the States</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/alfa-romeo-8c-competizione-in-the-states/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/alfa8ccc_29_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/alfa-romeo-8c-competizione-in-the-states/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/alfa8ccc_28_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/alfa-romeo-8c-competizione-in-the-states/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/alfa8ccc_27_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/alfa-romeo-8c-competizione-in-the-states/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/alfa8ccc_26_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/alfa-romeo-8c-competizione-in-the-states/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/12/alfa8ccc_25_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><strong>Photos Copyright (C)2008 <a href="http://www.frank4cars.fotki.com/">Frank Filipponio</a>, <a href="http://www.drewphillipsphotography.com/">Drew Phillips</a> / Weblogs, Inc.</strong><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/14/alfa-romeo-8c-competiziones-popping-up-stateside/">Alfa Romeo 8C Competiziones popping up Stateside</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 14 Dec 2008 10:15:00 EST. Apparently Glickenhaus is not strictly a Ferrari fan, as he has now become the first of 100 Americans to receive the keys to a U.S.-spec Alfa Romeo <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/09/29/paris-motor-show-world-premiere-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione/">8C Competizione</a> coupe. Glickenhaus even reportedly paid enough extra for his 8C Competizione to get the Alfa Romeo factory to finish his car in the same shade of red used on his one-of-a-kind P4/5. Shortly after Glickenhaus took the keys and went for a first drive, the same dealership handed over two more 8Cs to slightly lesser mortals. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione/low/">2009 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/07/img_8483-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/07/img_8485-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/07/img_8487-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/07/img_8488-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/07/img_8489-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.velocetoday.com/archives/1399#more-1399">VeloceToday</a> via <a href="http://www.autofiends.com/index.php/2008/11/first-alfa-romeo-8c-delivered-in-united-states/">AutoFiends</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/13/jim-glickenhaus-gets-first-us-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione/">Jim Glickenhaus gets first Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione in the U.S. </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 13:03:00 EST. And everything was <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/18/alfa-romeos-return-to-america-comes-into-focus/">looking so good</a> for a return of the Alfa Romeo brand to the United States. Too bad, it seems, 'cause the latest reports indicate that the Italian purveyor of stylish automobiles such as the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/25/paris-preview-alfa-romeo-brera-ti/">Brera</a>, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/12/poor-sales-mean-alfa-159-replacement-coming-soon-with-u-s-in-si/">159</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/19/whats-italian-for-drool-alfa-149-images-hit-the-web/">the drool-worthy 149</a> will be pushed back to 2011 at the earliest. Fortunately for the very well heeled, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/09/29/paris-motor-show-world-premiere-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione/">Alfa 8C Competizione</a> has been made available through an assorted group of Maserati dealerships, though it's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/06/alfa-romeo-8c-goes-on-sale-now-in-u-s-already-sold-out/">already sold out</a>. Such a quick sellout indicates that there are plenty of enthusiasts anxiously awaiting the marque's entrance Stateside, but our current horrible economic climate will likely dictate otherwise. <br /><br />Alfa's owner, Fiat, is having difficulties of its own as it attempts to stem the tide of falling sales figures along with rest of the industry. Apparently, the only way for Fiat to make money selling cars in America is to build them here. We wish some sort of deal could be made with Cerberus to use up some of the under-utilized factories that Chrysler currently has available. and a deal Something like this <em>could </em>indeed take place, but probably not until the auto market stabilizes and the Detroit 3 figure out their various positions in the new-look landscape. <em>Thanks for the tip, Elias</em>!<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.italiaspeed.com/2008/cars/alfa_romeo/10/usa/2510.html">Italispeed</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/26/fiat-postpones-alfas-return-to-the-states/">Fiat postpones Alfa's return to the States?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 26 Oct 2008 12:02:00 EST. Auto Express has put two shots of the pleasingly-styled hatch online. The 149, a replacement for the 147, shares some familial styling cues with the MiTo, which in turn shares some lines with the 8C Competizione. The 149 is an exceedingly handsome three- or five door that would woo us on looks alone. Performance will be there to back up the racy sheetmetal, with gasoline and diesel powerplants, variously turbocharged. At the low end, the 149 packs 120 horsepower, and it can reach as high as 250. The hotrod versions will also get a trick differential, dubbed Q2, which will aid in getting that power to the ground. The car will drop in mid 2009, and is rumored to adhere to US safety regulations, boding well for this sinewy Italian making it across the Atlantic to the North American market. Please. We're begging. <br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/229656/alfas_beautiful_little_number.html">Auto Express</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/19/whats-italian-for-drool-alfa-149-images-hit-the-web/">What's Italian for drool? <br />And with these words, the Alfisti shall rejoice: Alfa Romeo is finally back in the United States. While a full scale return by the Italian maker won't happen until 2009 or 2010, you can officially buy the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/09/29/paris-motor-show-world-premiere-alfa-romeo-8c-competizione/">Alfa 8C Competizione</a> starting this month through one of the designated Maserati dealers tabbed to carry this rolling piece of automotive hotness. Check that, you can arrange delivery. Seems all of the 8Cs earmarked for the U.S. are already spoken for. So at least in theory, Alfa has returned. The 8C Spider open air version won't show up until 2010, but we really like the coupe enough not to be too distressed about the wait.<br /><br />When the full operation ramps up, we are expecting that someone strolling into an Alfa Romeo dealership will be able to purchase not only the 8C Competizione and 8C Spider, but hopefully the hotter <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/23/spy-shots-alfa-romeo-8c-gta/">8C GTA</a>, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/25/paris-preview-alfa-romeo-brera-ti/">Brera</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/12/poor-sales-mean-alfa-159-replacement-coming-soon-with-u-s-in-si/">159</a> or their <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/08/rendered-speculation-2011-alfa-romeo-giulia-to-replace-159/">replacements</a>, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/22/north-american-exclusive-first-drive-alfa-mito/">MiTo</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/15/spied-and-rendered-alfa-romeo-149/">149</a>, and whisperings also suggest a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/03/students-propose-alfa-169-designs-to-ramaciotti/">large rear-drive car</a> possibly based on a Jaguar platform, along with a BMW X3 rival. Sounds a bit like Heaven. <p>It'd be hard to ask for more than what the spectacular Alfa 8C Competizione already offers, but Alfa Romeo intends to do just that. So after announcing the initial run of 500 coupes, Alfa will begin production of 500 roadsters. But in case that weren't enough, reports have been circulating of <em>two</em> new 8Cs to follow. On the one hand we have the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/01/alfa-romeo-wants-2nd-gen-8c-based-on-ferrari-california-by-2010/">8C's successor</a>, which Alfa's PR people hope will be based on the Ferrari California. On the other we have the more focused <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/25/lighter-stronger-faster-alfa-ceo-wants-an-8c-gta/">GTA version</a> of the current coupe.</p>
<p>While earlier reports suggested that the new second-generation Ferrari-based 8C could arrive in time for Alfa Romeo's 100 year anniversary in 2010, sources now suggest that it will be the 8C GTA that will arrive for the big celebration. Applying the magic formula of less weight and more power, the GTA is tipped to shed some 150 kg (330 lbs), while power from the 4.7-liter V8 is anticipated to climb from its current 450hp to a nice round 500. (If you remember writing your SATs, think <em>GTA is to 8C as Scuderia is to F430 </em>and you're a shoe-in for your top choice.) Only 100 examples are reportedly on the table, and you can bet they'll sell out faster than a "waste management consultant" with priors.</p>

<p>When Alfa Romeo announced it was actually building the 8C Competizione, we had but to applaud. The automaker slashed its own marketing budget to finance the car's manufacturing, justifying that the halo supercar would do more for the brand's image than any television ad ever could. (Then they did it again with the Spider version.) Right they were, and we wish more automakers would think that way. The latest reports indicate that Alfa Romeo is following its own example, so while <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/25/lighter-stronger-faster-alfa-ceo-wants-an-8c-gta/">CEO Luca de Meo campaigns within the Fiat hierarchy for an even more hard-core version to wear the vaunted GTA badge</a>, some of his subordinates are thinking a step ahead towards the 8C's successor.</p>
<p>The current 8C is based on an aging Maserati platform - not unlike the resuscitating Aston Martin DB7 that was based on old Jaguar underpinnings. However, strategists within Alfa Romeo want to see its successor based on the new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/FerrariCalifornia/">Ferrari California</a>, trading in the input of one sister company for another. While they realize it will be an uphill battle - one which could come down to Fiat chairman and Ferrari president Luca di Montezemelo's decision - to get Ferrari to agree to the proposal, Alfa Romeo is reportedly keen to get the project off the ground and get the second-generation sportscar ready within the next two years to celebrate Alfa's centennial in 2010.</p>

<p>Few cars are as eminently desirable as the Alfa 8C Competizione. So how do you make us want it even more? Well, you can chop off the roof and make it into a roadster, but Alfa Romeo already did that. How about making it even more powerful? That's hard to do - remember that, having developed the engine for its sister-company, Maserati has shoehorned the 450hp V8 into both the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/21/pics-aplenty-maserati-granturismo-s-in-all-its-glory/">GranTurismo</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/23/details-and-images-surface-of-new-maserati-quattroporte-and-quat/">the new Quattroporte</a> to make more powerful S versions of both - but that's exactly what Alfa's new CEO, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/11/breaking-luca-de-meo-announced-as-new-alfa-romeo-ceo/">Luca de Meo</a>, intends to do.</p>
<p>The plan involves producing an additional run of 100 supercars with more power and less weight... and you know that's the magic formula. Like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/06/24/alfa-mito-gta-confirmed-with-230hp/">230hp MiTo announced just yesterday</a>, the faster 8C would wear Alfa's premier GTA badge. Although the project has yet to gain approval from the higher-ups in the Fiat group, de Meo is reportedly fighting for it. We hope he wins, and with the clout he holds in the company, we think he just might.</p>
