It was tradition, despite the fact that the knife would be lost within hours. Chances are if you get the new <a href="http://www.airstream.com/products/victorinox-special-edition/index.html">Victorinox Special Edition Airstream</a> for your birthday, you're not going to lose it. Designed to celebrate the 125th birthday of Victorinox, this new Airstream combines two brands with overlapping audiences into one pretty slick camper. Airstream trailers have always occupied the ultra cool end of the travel trailer spectrum with their sleek aluminum shells and retro vibe. Throw in some Swiss Army cues that include Victorinox timepieces, kitchen cutlery and Swiss Army Knives themselves, and we feel safe saying the whole is better than the sum of its parts. Only 125 units will be produced at a starting price of $59,000, and each is commemorated with a serialized plaque. <br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/victorinox-special-edition-airstream/low/">Victorinox Special Edition Airstream</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/victorinox-special-edition-airstream/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/as_vsai_se_3_4frtext_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/victorinox-special-edition-airstream/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/as_vsai_se_ext_w_awning_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/victorinox-special-edition-airstream/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/as_vsai_se_rearext_final_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/victorinox-special-edition-airstream/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/as_vsai_se_dinefinal_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/victorinox-special-edition-airstream/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/06/as_vsai_se_intf2b_final_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.airstream.com/products/victorinox-special-edition/index.html">Airstream</a>]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/19/airstream-and-victorinox-hook-up-for-limited-edition-swiss-army/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Airstream and Victorinox hook up for limited edition Swiss Army trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/19/airstream-and-victorinox-hook-up-for-limited-edition-swiss-army/">Airstream and Victorinox hook up for limited edition Swiss Army trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 19 Jun 2009 16:29:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>MINI and Airstream - Click above for high-res image gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />Mini puts a big premium on style, and although its cars are a blast to drive and practical for most commuters, it's the look that makes them so desirable. Being able to personalize your Mini is a big part of that equation and Mini has taken that philosophy further into the fringes by teaming up with the equally iconic Airstream trailer company to create a uniquely Mini vision of "mobile living" for the Salone del Mobile furniture show currently underway in Milan. We showed you a sneak peek of their project <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/12/retrofuturism-mini-and-airstream-team-up-for-one-off/">last month</a>, but Mini has released more information and new images today, so we thought we'd share.<br /><br />Together with Danish furniture designer, Republic of Fritz Hansen, the companies have created a concept Mini Cooper S Clubman coupled to a matching 22-foot Airstream trailer with a "down-by-the beach" feel. There's a gallery and press release (after the jump) to explain the theme in detail, but basically the Clubman features neoprene seat covers, a surfboard on the roof and some scuba gear in the boot, while the trailer is a drop side Airstream with funky modern furniture by Fritz. It's a cool bit of kit that we'd be happy to take on a trip down the coast.<br /><br /> <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-cooper-s-clubman-joins-airstream-trailer/low/">MINI Cooper S Clubman joins Airstream Trailer</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-cooper-s-clubman-joins-airstream-trailer/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/miniairstream---01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-cooper-s-clubman-joins-airstream-trailer/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/miniairstream---02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-cooper-s-clubman-joins-airstream-trailer/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/miniairstream---03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-cooper-s-clubman-joins-airstream-trailer/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/miniairstream---04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/mini-cooper-s-clubman-joins-airstream-trailer/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/miniairstream---05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/22/mini-cooper-s-clubman-joins-airstream-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MINI Cooper S Clubman joins Airstream Trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/22/mini-cooper-s-clubman-joins-airstream-trailer/">MINI Cooper S Clubman joins Airstream Trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 22 Apr 2009 16:58:00 EST. <br />MINI and <a href="http://www.airstream.com/">Airstream</a> have joined forces with <a href="http://www.fritzhansen.com/">Republic of Fritz Hansen</a> to create a new concept that will be introduced at the Salone del Mobile show in Milan. The team says that the MINI Cooper Clubman was chosen for its adventurous personality, and we too think it would be an adventure of sorts trying to pull a 22-foot trailer with the MINI's 1.6-liter, four-cylinder powerplant, albeit one topped with a turbocharger and direct injection.<br /><br />As a concept, we can see how the two iconic brands with heritage-rich designs would be drawn to one another. Airstream has been around since the 1930s and we all know about the current MINI's roots to the free-sprirted 1960s original from Britain. The interiors of both machines have been heavily customized, with the MINI getting a surfer-look, black-and-green neoprene treatment and the trailer getting plenty of Fritz Hansen furniture and wood paneling inside.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/fritz-hansen-mini-and-airstream/low/">Fritz Hansen MINI and Airstream</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/fritz-hansen-mini-and-airstream/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/120309-a-airs_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/fritz-hansen-mini-and-airstream/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/120309airs_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Republic of Fritz Hansen]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/12/retrofuturism-mini-and-airstream-team-up-for-one-off/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Retrofuturism: Mini and Airstream team up for one-off</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/12/retrofuturism-mini-and-airstream-team-up-for-one-off/">Retrofuturism: Mini and Airstream team up for one-off</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 12 Mar 2009 14:58:00 EST. <div align="center"><strong><strong><em><small>Click above for more images of the Airstream PanAmerica</small></em></strong></strong><br /></div>
<br />Being able to complain that hauling your 34-foot Airstream around means leaving your full-dresser Harley at home for vacation strikes us as an enviable problem to have. For those of you with a surfeit of high-end toys and a longing to hit the road, Airstream has you covered with its new PanAmerica model. Being a high-end product itself, the PanAmerica sports Airstream's trademark aluminum construction and mid-century modern styling that ensures it's perpetually in vogue. The best part of the trailer, however, is that it sports a garage in its aft compartment that can swallow a pair of motorcycles, some ATVs, or our current favorite, a red Radio Flyer wagon. The garage has an 11-foot depth and is comprehensively equipped with tie downs and wheel clamps so your scooter will stay put while you drag everything over mountain passes. <br /><br />The dragging part will require a pretty beefy tow vehicle. You'll want your pickup to have the largest available engine to cope with the 11,500-pound gross weight rating. Once you've docked your rig at camp, it's nothing but traditional Airstream class inside, meaning stainless appliances, indirect lighting, and snazzy cabinetry. It all looks like some kind of 1950's Brasserie, and if we had 85 large to drop on a jet-age home away from home (and a truck brawny enough to pull it), we'd be blogging from various bucolic undisclosed locations on a daily basis. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/airstream-panamerica/low/">Airstream PanAmerica</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/airstream-panamerica/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/airstream_panamerica_6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/airstream-panamerica/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/airstream_panamerica_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/airstream-panamerica/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/airstream_panamerica_7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/airstream-panamerica/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/airstream_panamerica_3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/airstream-panamerica/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/airstream_panamerica_2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://squob.com/toy_haulers/airstream-panamerica-first-look/">squob.com</a>]<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/02/airstream-unveils-toy-toting-panamerica-trailer/">Airstream unveils toy-toting PanAmerica trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 02 Oct 2008 17:29:00 EST. <p>If somebody told us that a custom chopper was being built for <a href="http://www.airstream.com/index.html">Airstream</a>, we would have assumed that the <a href="http://www.orangecountychoppers.com/">Orange County Chopper</a> boys were behind it. Not so, it seems. According to the press release pasted after the jump, Jesse James of West Coast Choppers fame and his crew are hammering, riveting and welding together thin sheets of aluminum to construct a custom motorcycle and sidecar combo that will debut at the 2008 <a href="http://legendofthemotorcycle.com/">Legend of the Motorcycle</a> show on May 3rd. This is the second time that James has released a new bike at the show, the first being back in '06 with his Radial Hell bike (<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/radial-hell/621106/">shown above</a>) that is powered by a Rotec 7-cylinder radial engine normally reserved for powering aircraft. We're always up for a new take on motorcycle design, and the idea of strapping the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/30/australias-monster-motorbike-from-hell/">Monster bike</a> to an old Airstream trailer has us wondering just what Jesse's bike will look like.</p>

And it was definitely a harsh day, with maximum humidity and temperatures in the low nineties. <br /><br />Harsh certainly describes the treatment Ford got from the media at the Detroit Auto Show for the AirStream concept. The Lincoln MKR and Ford Interceptor both got an unintentional preview weeks before the show thanks to our colleagues at the print publications, but the Airstream came out of nowhere. As <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/07/13/autoblog-qanda-peter-horbury-on-the-2007-ford-concepts/">Peter Horbury </a>acknowledged in our discussion, Ford may have been better off had it emphasized the mechanicals of the Airstream over the design. <br /><br />Continue reading about the Airstream drive after the jump.<br /> <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-airstream-concept-drive/low/">Ford Airstream concept drive</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-airstream-concept-drive/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/07/img_7417_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-airstream-concept-drive/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/07/img_7418_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-airstream-concept-drive/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/07/img_7419_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-airstream-concept-drive/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/07/img_7420_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-airstream-concept-drive/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/07/img_7421_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-airstream-concept/low/">Ford Airstream Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-airstream-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/fordairstreamconcept_20_ab_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-airstream-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/fordairstreamconcept_11_ab_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-airstream-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/fordairstreamconcept_19_ab_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-airstream-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/fordairstreamconcept_16_ab_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/ford-airstream-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/fordairstreamconcept_13_ab_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/07/15/live-from-dearborn-driving-the-ford-airstream-concept/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Live from Dearborn: Driving the Ford Airstream Concept</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/07/15/live-from-dearborn-driving-the-ford-airstream-concept/">Live from Dearborn: Driving the Ford Airstream Concept</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 15 Jul 2007 12:23:00 EST. Like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/07/detroit-auto-show-live-reveal-of-the-chevy-volt-concept/">Chevy Volt</a>, it's primarily battery-powered with an auxiliary power unit to charge the battery on the go. The Airstream, howver, differs from the Volt in that it's equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell instead of an internal combustion engine. <br /><br />This week at the Automotive News World Congress, Ford's hybrid vehicle manager Nancy Gioia delivered an address where she indicated that Ford is seriously considering a production plug-in hybrid vehicle. The battery, of course, is the main hold up. Because of the added complexity of a PHEV, a strong, affordable, reliable battery is critical to getting enough battery range to make such a vehicle worthwhile. Gioia indicated that additional tax credits may be necessary for buyers to find such a vehicle economically viable. <br /><br />Ford was no doubt spurred to make this statement concerning the future viability of a plug-in hybrid based on the warm reception of the Chevy Volt Concept at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. Ford was the first domestic automaker on the scene with a hybrid when it introduced the Ford Escape Hybrid a few years ago. Eager to maintain its image as the greenest automaker based in the U.S., announcing the potential for a plug-in hybrid puts it somewhat back on par with General Motors, though the General has actually produced the Volt Concept, which is much more production feasible with its E-Flex chassis than Ford's Airstream Concept. <br /><br />[Source: Automotive News - Subscription required]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/17/re-volting-ford-considerig-plug-in-hybrid/">Re-Volting: Ford considerig plug-in hybrid</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 17 Jan 2007 09:34:00 EST. The nose says Econoline quite clearly, while the rest of Ford's latest CUV concept is inspired by both space capsules and Airstream trailers. While the styling of the exterior and interior may pay some homage to what has passed, the mechanized bits of the Airstream are definitely space-age and forward looking. Once you digest the styling and the high-tech underpinnings, the old camper and Hal 9000 influences converge neatly.
