A host of carbon fiber parts designed and made in Germany are what turn the McLaren MP4-12C Spider into the Gemballa GT Spider. The 625-horsepower, twin-turbo V8 is untouched, almost everything else is heavily touched. There's the body kit that includes new front and rear bumpers, side skirts, new tailpipes and logos. Swing up the doors and you'll find a reskinned interior in leather and Alcantara in your choice of color, plus color-matched gauges. That will run you 19,980 euro ($25,647 US) including paint and installation, but it can alternatively be shipped internationally if you'd like to have your own people install it.

The GForged-one wheels are an inch larger than the standard units, at 20 inches up front and 21 inches in back, but don't change the weight of the car. There are two styles and two finishes available, and shod in Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber they'll require 7,980 euro ($10,243) of your hard earned. Throw down a little more and you can have the brake calipers painted, too.

If this number whispers seductive German nothings in your ear, check out the press release below and the high-res gallery above.
Continue reading McLaren 12C Spider worked over by Gemballa

McLaren 12C Spider worked over by Gemballa originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 May 2013 07:59:00 EST.
Bavarian tuners ABT have done another job on the Audi R8 V10, pumping up the 5.2-liter FSI V10 from 525 horsepower to 600 hp, and torque from 391 pound-feet to 406 lb-ft. With 50 more horsepower than the R8 V10 Plus - but not the extreme weight-loss scheme - ABT claims a 0-62 mile per hour run of 3.5 seconds, the same as the R8 V10 Plus, and a top speed for the mid-engined coupe of 198 miles per hour "is no problem at all."

Managing all that speed are the aero tweaks provided by a comprehensive body kit including a rear wing, a lowered and beefed-up suspension, a stainless steel exhaust and 19-inch wheels in two different designs.

The press release below has a few more bits of info on the matter. And while ABT hasn't put a price on the Audi upgrades, but it's safe to say that nearly 200 mph in an R8 won't come cheap.
Continue reading Audi R8 V10 gets tuned up by ABT

Audi R8 V10 gets tuned up by ABT originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 May 2013 11:30:00 EST.
Toyota Racing Development (TRD) in Japan has designed cosmetic and performance bits that give the 2014 Lexus IS a front-to-back workover. Different from the F-Sport parts we expect from Lexus here, the full body kit runs 437,700 yen ($4,285 US) and starts with air deflectors at the lower edges of the front bumper, through to side skirts, a decklid spoiler and a rear bumper with a diffuser and quad exhaust tips.

For 288,750 yen ($2,830) you can sharpen responses with new shocks, springs, dampers, sway bar and bracing. The priciest individual component is the set of 19-inch wheels, four of them going for 527,625 yen (5,170 US). There's no word on US importation or pricing yet, but done up all in black like the IS above, we wouldn't mind seeing it here.
2014 Lexus IS gets TRD bits originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 May 2013 09:29:00 EST.
Bulgarian tuner Vilner has done a job on the interior of the previous-generation Mercedes-Benz SL and left almost no surface untouched. Calling it "one of their bravest projects," the standard leather has been replaced with either antiqued brown Nappa leather or crocodile hide, the plastics have been covered in Alcantara with the same material lining the roof, and the wood has been redone, in some cases painted by hand, to match the decor.

And although the firm says its changes have made the convertible "not seem that flamboyant," it does also sport lasers in the doors that beam Vilner's logo. The press release below has the rest of the details.
Continue reading Mercedes SL gets a whole safari-worth of materials from Vilner

Mercedes SL gets a whole safari-worth of materials from Vilner originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Apr 2013 08:43:00 EST. It's next demonstration of that is the convertible above, a stylized recreation of the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SC (inset) supported by the structure of a 2012 SLS AMG Roadster. Commissioned by a client in Eastern Europe, the resulting car is called the 300 SLC.

The hand-formed aluminum bodywork required just a few changes to the SLS AMG Roadster, namely reworking the headlights into a stacked arrangement of LEDs and relocating the pop-up spoiler behind the cabin. The retro grille and long, straight hood evoke the past, the custom exhaust, height-adjustable suspension, 21-inch wheels up front and 22-inch wheels in back, however, stray a little further from history. The 300 SLC will come with a hardtop and be one-of-a-kind, making it even rarer than its inspiration, of which 92 were made.

If you have any more questions, they can probably be answered in the high-res photo gallery above and press release below.
Continue reading Gullwing America turns SLS AMG Roadster into stunning 1955 300 SC redux

Gullwing America turns SLS AMG Roadster into stunning 1955 300 SC redux originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Feb 2013 17:01:00 EST.
SEMA is more than nine months away, but the reveille bugle for the show has just sounded with Ford's call to aftermarket companies for its project-vehicle program. The 2014 Ford Fiesta ST and 2014 Transit Connect van and wagon are the cars The Blue Oval wants to feature, but applicants can submit project vehicles for any product except the GT500, the Raptor, or anything from Lincoln.

Submissions must be completed in two parts, the first being an email to Ford with an overview of the project, like vehicle theme, promotional plan and location display. The second part must be mailed in on company letterhead and gets down to the nuts and bolts of the vision and the provision of company bona fides. The complete proposal is due on March 1, winners will be notified by May 1. Click the link below to get all the details, and for show attendees, get ready to see some funky Fiestas and wild shaggin' wagons in Las Vegas come November.
Ford picks Fiesta ST, Transit Connect as this year's SEMA darlings originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 02 Feb 2013 17:07:00 EST.
We're piecing this together as best we can from the original Japanese with the help of Google Translate, but it seems Chevrolet is headed to the Tokyo Auto Salon with three special vehicles. Embracing the customization of American metal through the themes of cool, fun and freedom, the showpiece will be a Camaro Giovanna Edition but there's no information on it. Based on its name, though, we would not be shocked if it's fitted with Giovanna aftermarket wheels.

It will be joined by the Chevrolet Captiva Freedom Rider in Carbon Flash Metallic hue and the Chevrolet Sonic Street Icon Package in red. The "stylish and playful" Sonic is all about skateboarders and "the street generation," while the Captiva works the two-wheeled crowd with its Thule bike rack and painted-to-match bicycle.

The Salon goes down from January 11-13. We'll be looking forward to that Camaro and to see whether that Captiva grille really is as meshtastic as it looks in the above picture.
Chevrolet headed to Tokyo Auto Salon with Sonic, Captiva concepts originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 Jan 2013 13:31:00 EST.
Forgiato is a well-known maker of custom wheels to fit just about any taste (and budget), but the company also makes other parts to trick your car out. For Chevrolet Camaro owners, Forgiato has designed the DiFalco grille to include hidden headlights somewhat reminiscent of what was available on first-gen Camaros.

From what we can see in the images, the mesh grille and motorized headlight covers go over the stock parts, and when closed, each "eyelid" also has 18 LEDs that can light up for a unique effect. Priced at $3,399, the DiFalco grille doesn't come cheap, but judging by the other upgrades made to this wide-body Camaro show car, we're sure this is just a drop in the bucket.

Check out the (questionably safe for work) video after the jump showing a few brief glimpses at the trick headlights mixed in with two minutes of a scantily-clad woman hanging out by a pool and an autonomous Camaro not named Bumblebee.
Continue reading Forgiato brings hidden headlamps back to the Chevy Camaro [w/video]

Forgiato brings hidden headlamps back to the Chevy Camaro [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 08 Dec 2012 19:07:00 EST.
Ah, SEMA. Always a bastion of terrific ideas and entirely tasteful modifications. The latest innovation to come from the show that brought you this, and that is a product called Street Stamps. Building off of the previous popularity of underglow lights, Street Stamps project a customizable image on the ground from your vehicle. The image can be rendered in white, blue, red, green, yellow or a custom color at the owner's request.

To install, all you need is to drill a 3/4-inch hole into your side view mirror or another strategic location. From there, you are all set to broadcast to the world your hatred for all things Bowtie or your disdain for import vehicles (popular options, according to the video).

Similar implementations of this technology is found in the Ford Mustang and Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, where the exterior courtesy lighting (sometimes called "puddle lamps") feature brand-specific designs. These OEM systems shut off when the vehicle is in motion - it's not readily apparent if Street Stamps do the same. If, in fact, the image can be projected while the vehicle is in motion, there would seem to be some obvious legal issues.

Click below to check out the video. We'd hate to imagine one drilling into a side mirror on one of the pair of Lamborghini's in this vid, but what price can you put on personal expression, right? Obligatory warning for some foul language. Let us know what you think about this product in the comments below.
Continue reading Street Smarts, customizable puddle lamps project your class

Street Smarts, customizable puddle lamps project your class originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Oct 2012 17:01:00 EST.
Revozport is a Chinese tuner, but one of its tuning arms reaches all the way to the UK. To reward itself for getting a particular ISO certification, its UK office put together the Revozport Mini Targa Raze, a program applicable to either the Mini Coupe or Roadster.

It might be a smidge OTT, but it's not a bad job. With the help of Targa racing the motor gets ramped up to 250 horsepower, a 69-hp boost, to propel a car that is 66 pounds lighter, having swapped in 23 carbon and kevlar parts like the roof panel, vented hood and rear bumper and a titanium cat-back exhaust. The track front and rear is also 15 mm wider to fill out those new arches.

No price has been mentioned, but if you're in Zhuhai, China in October you'll get a chance to see it in person. If that's a bridge too far, there's a press release below with more details.
Continue reading Mini Coupe made lighter, more powerful by Revozport

Mini Coupe made lighter, more powerful by Revozport originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 Aug 2012 07:58:00 EST.
It sounds like the flittering of fresh $100 bills, or at least that's what we assume it sounds like. DDMWorks in South Carolina has released the first 700 conversion kit for the Ariel Atom 2. By strapping both a turbocharger and a supercharger to the Ecotec 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, the company has managed to wring a full 700 horsepower from the mill. Of course, the internals required a bit of massaging. DDMWorks threw in Darton mid sleeves, ceramic-coated Wiseco pistons, H-beam Carrillo rods and ARP hardware throughout. A set of 1,100-cc fuel injectors keep the engine fed, and a custom air-to-water heat exchanger keeps the supercharger output serviceable. The turbo, meanwhile, relies on an air-to-air intercooler.

DDMWorks went with 275-mm wide rear tires on custom 17x9 wheels to get the power to the ground. The company has even supplied the driver with the option of three power levels, including 450 hp, 575 hp and the Full Monty. Sound perfectly sinister to us.
Ford has dropped a lawsuit against 13 individuals accused of selling counterfeit products with the automaker's trademarks, according to The Detroit News. The company originally wanted to acquire names, addresses, telephone numbers, bank account numbers and emails from sites like eBay and PayPal without informing the accused, but a federal magistrate judge in Detroit initially denied the request, ordering the sites instead to notify its users.

Ford appealed, saying notification would allow defendants time to destroy evidence and possibly flee before Ford and its lawyers could obtain their identities. The judge eventually relented, allowing Ford access to names and addresses but blocking other personal information. Ford withdrew the suit last week anyway.

The Detroit News reports a 2007 U.S. Chamber of Commerce study indicated that Ford loses around $1 billion per year to counterfeit auto parts. The report spurred the manufacturer to pursue offenders more vigorously. Counterfeit parts drag in $12 billion per year world wide, with $3 billion of that figure coming from the U.S. alone.
Ford drops suit against counterfeiters and trademark infringers originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 01 Aug 2012 08:44:00 EST.
Where the outlandish reigns supreme, functionality and practicality take a back seat. That's why we admire folks who poke fun at the insanity of the automotive aftermarket. Take this particular Dodge Viper owner. Rather than swap in the latest short-throw kit, the guy bolted on a four-foot-long shift knob. Why? According to his YouTube account, he was jealous of drivers with longer knobs. Har Har.

He helpfully points out that the modification won't work on GTS coupes or hardtops due to clearance issues. Regardless, the owner promises the modification will "get you lots of attention GUARANTEED." No arguments there. Check out the video below.
Continue reading Four-foot Dodge Viper shifter mod is a head-scratcher

Four-foot Dodge Viper shifter mod is a head-scratcher originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 28 Jul 2012 20:01:00 EST.
India's Big Daddy Customs has made a Moon Rover. What's that? It's a Tata Safari SUV (pictured at right) made to look like a Range Rover Evoque, but only really from the front, at a low angle, ideally in low light and assuming you'd never seen a real Evoque or the donor vehicle before. To get an idea of dimensions, the Evoque is a couple inches wider than a Safari, but the Safari is nearly a foot longer and more than a foot taller.

Having said that, given what Big Daddy started with, it's not entirely dreadful. The Evoque's signatures have been reasonably approximated, and the "custom white paint job" is part of the package. Nothing's been changed inside, but according to the company's Facebook page. "Apart from glass house area, everything else has been modified in the body shell."

So it's good to know that at least they take their work seriously. We think.
Big Daddy Customs turns Tata Safari into Land Rover Evoque originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 21 Jul 2012 14:04:00 EST.
German powerhouse tuner AC Schnitzer has spent some time fettling the new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé, the result being a 360-horsepower 640i sedan with all the restraint of a Mako shark. The additional grunt adds up to 40 hp for the 640i and 47 hp for the 640d, with said grunt made more finely tuned as it rides on Schnitzer's own spring kit and wheels that range from 19 to 21 inches in diameter.

Eight-piston calipers up front should provide plenty of stopping power and trademark Schnitzer bits like the prognathous skirting and exhaust tips will let everyone know that this BMW means serious business.

There's something mesmerizing about The Discovery Channel's How It's Made series. While we couldn't care less about the intricacies of paperclip production, watching the various machines and processes interact is the stuff lazy Saturday afternoons are made of.

Hedman Headers has cribbed that successful formula with a new video that lets you follow a set of headers as they make their way from plain tube steel to performance hardware. The company uses computer-controlled machinery to precisely bend the pipes before handing them over to master welders, and those guys hand-stitch the various pieces into the work of art you see above.

Each part is test fitted against existing jigs to maintain quality control throughout the assembly process, and the final pieces are either sprayed black for shipping or doused in a special ceramic coating to resist oxidization. Very cool. Check out the video below to see what we mean.
Continue reading Watch Hedman Headers build a manifold from start to finish

Watch Hedman Headers build a manifold from start to finish originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 07 Jul 2012 20:01:00 EST.
Now that we're familiar with Bulgarian tuner Vilner Studio, we shouldn't be surprised by the generous application of quilted leather in its latest project, the Mercedes-Benz W113 Gentle Pagoda.

A comprehensive luxification of a Pagoda-roofed SL, two-tone leather in cafe and latte hues are cross-stitched throughout the cabin, and set off with chrome, aluminum and a mahogany-rimmed steering wheel. Incredibly, the nicest part of the car could be the trunk, which is so well turned out you'd need to think about which valuables are worthy of putting in it. Take a closer look at it in the photo gallery above.
Continue reading Vilner breathes new life into classic Mercedes-Benz SL Pagoda

Vilner breathes new life into classic Mercedes-Benz SL Pagoda originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 23 Jun 2012 13:03:00 EST.
Steampunk is a fashion that always seems to live just around the corner; every time you think it's down to its last copper fitting, it peeks around the corner for another encore. Poland's Carlex Design, which will outfit anything from a Toyota Hilux to a Ferrari FF with sensuous leather and interior trimmings, is the latest to go the copper-toned way with a Mini Countryman.

Dubbed MiniSteam, this unique vehicle features a satin gray finish with blacked-out windows and lights and bronze detailing that pops all over, it's a crossover that H. G. Wells might have used when he tired of his time machine. Inside, things are ornate in the extreme: a tiny slice of brown wood on the center stack is surrounded by brightwork of copper hue and deep brown leather, the floor is hardwood, even the streering wheel gets twin bands of bronze, and the seats and wheel center cap are set off by insets of mechanical movements.

The Carlex website doesn't appear to have any detailed info on the sci-fi Mini, but if their other works are any indication, this will be expensive and exclusive. Have a closer look at it in the gallery of photos.
Carlex Design goes Steampunk with Mini Countryman originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 11 Jun 2012 17:30:00 EST.
It is clear that the Chinese appetite for luxury cars with monumental power and imperial luxury has barely begun, so automakers are positioning themselves to make sure they can provide a growing supply. Zhongsheng Group Holdings, owners of a dealer group that includes Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus showrooms, has taken a 70-percent stake in German tuner Carlsson according to a report in Reuters, and it has plans for its new purchase that offer enormous potential.

Saying that off-the-rack luxury cars have sold so well in major cities that they feel "like driving a Camry in Los Angeles," the Zhongsheng CEO is one of the new faces in the exotic customization segment. He plans to open a number of retail outlets for Carlsson, to use Carlsson to design bodykits and accessories for marques that his company sells, and to build a factory in China for local assembly.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. However, Reuters notes that Mercedes-Benz has officially approved the deal, which means warranties will still be honored for Carlsson customers everywhere.
Chinese take majority stake in German tuner Carlsson originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 06 Jun 2012 07:58:00 EST.
A woman's place is in the garage - and some people want to keep them there.

The SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women was created by Ford Motor Co. and the Specialty Equipment Market Association to create a pony car designed by and built by women.

But before a group of volunteers pull out their wrenches and pop a few beers in the garage, they need the general public to pick the car they'll create.

Whichever Mustang gets the most votes will be built by an all-female crew and shown off at the SEMA show in Las Vegas later this year.

The three finalists include:

High Gear: A luxury Mustang concept inspired by couture clothing, jewelry and buildings. It's supposed to fuse muscle and power.

Chormatic: Uses neon colors and anthracite chrome to create a futuristic version that was inspired by street art.

Fast Metal: Symbolizes raw speed and power, using unique tone on tone dark metallic finishes with red accents.

Votes can be cast at HotRod.com and additional coverage about the vehicles can be found at AutomobileMag.com, MustangMonthly.com and MuscleMustangFastFords.com.
