Convertibles make you do funny things. Ask someone if they'd drive a hardtop in near freezing temperatures with all the windows down and they might not even answer, thinking the question so ridiculous. Give that same person a convertible they love and you might just have to ask them to please put the top up even when snow is on the ground.

That guy has to take precautions to enjoy his proclivities, and as this new ad for the Volkswagen Beetle Convertible shows, not everyone understands. Have a watch below, and note that there's just one woman in the minute-long spot, and she's nowhere near the car. Seriously, why didn't VW run this commercial during the Super Bowl?
Continue reading New VW Beetle Convertible ad needs no disguise

New VW Beetle Convertible ad needs no disguise originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Feb 2013 13:01:00 EST.
We've had some pets with some pretty strange proclivities. There was the long-haired dachshund that preferred climbing trees and riding skateboards to chasing cars, the doberman with a penchant for Krystal hamburgers and the border collie that loved herding cats more than chasing them, but we've never seen anything quite like the pup in the video below. The latest ad for the new Volkswagen Golf in the Netherlands features a one very confused little dog as it harries its owner over the course of a normal day.

From strange behaviors to an unusual series of barks, it would seem this particular dog was raised in the garage. You can take a closer look at the video below to see just what we mean. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have to go train our cats for a new range of tricks.
Continue reading Watch this doggone hilarious VW Golf ad

Watch this doggone hilarious VW Golf ad originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 Jan 2013 19:58:00 EST.
Cats generally don't like car rides. Cats universally detest veterinarians. Yet to showcase the die-for-it allure of the Toyota Corolla in New Zealand (which isn't our Corolla but the European Auris), ad house Saatchi and Saatchi asked, "What lengths would a cat go to for a ride if they loved it?"

The answer is the 90-second tale of a cat who intentionally puts himself through seven feline hells to feed his need for another ride in the new hatchback. To the vet. Implausible, yes. Humorous, also yes. You can watch the ad below.
Continue reading This cat thinks the Toyota Corolla is to die for

This cat thinks the Toyota Corolla is to die for originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 15:03:00 EST.
For such a Lilliputian car, the Smart ForTwo has giant staying power. The hatch that still gets wary glances is not only still kicking here in the U.S., it's done ten-straight months of year-on-year sales increases. That kind of sales trend calls for an ad campaign, and we have it in three new 15-second - bite-sized in Smart-speak - commercials.

Two of them, "Tough" and "Joy Ride" have begun running now, the third, "Custom Made," will start airing later this month. They'll be rolled out absolutely everywhere a commercial can be shown, and they'll be joined by banner ads and Facebook activity. We could tell you what the new Smart ads are about, but remember, they're only bite-sized, and you'll find all three just below.
Continue reading 2013 Smart ForTwo gets three bite-size new ads

2013 Smart ForTwo gets three bite-size new ads originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Sep 2012 15:30:00 EST.
Australian bank robbers apparently know two things: where to go to steal Aussie dollars in Los Angeles, and that you don't leave the bar without your Carlton Draught. It seems that what they don't know is which bars are crawling with police. This presents a challenge when, after the heist, they suddenly realize they're trying a enjoy a few pints with an entire precinct's worth of cops.

So the robbers in a commercial for Carlton Draught take off - with their beers. The cops, equally reluctant to give chase sans brewskies, take off after them. And since everyone knows you don't drink and drive, what follows is the classic post-heist car chase... with a twist. You can check out the "Beer Chase" commercial below.
Continue reading Carlton Draught beer ad recreates classic 70s car chase... without cars

Carlton Draught beer ad recreates classic 70s car chase... without cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 03 Sep 2012 20:00:00 EST.
A European group called Responsible Young Drivers wanted to showcase the dangers of texting while driving, and got ad agency Publicis to help them out. The result: a two-minute spot that put trainee drivers in Belgium with an instructor who said part of their driving test would be to avoid an obstacle while texting a random sentence that he'd dictate.

Since nothing beyond a cone or two was hurt in the making of this video, we'll admit we laughed. That said, the message is clear.

Last time we checked in with Subaru Canada's commercial front we were greeted by the sexy side of sumo, a half ton of rikishi getting lathered up on car hoods and being fed strawberries. Woof.

The wrestlers have taken a break for this new commercial, which features Subie employees and a few customers showing off their schwerve just because they live in a Subaru world. It's a little out there, but we'll admit, the salesman's got some moves. Check out Subaru of Canada's newest ad spot after the jump.
Continue reading Subaru of Canada gets its schwerve on

Subaru of Canada gets its schwerve on originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 12:32:00 EST.
It's no secret that EMTs, firefighters and emergency room nurses have a perverse sense of humor, especially when it comes to motorcycle riders. It's a sort of defense mechanism against the visual horrors those occupations impart on those who work them, and with the mortality rate among bike riders as high as it is, there's no wonder why motorcycles are called donorcycles in first-responder circles. Even so, these ads worked up by an agency for Dianese in 2007 embrace the morbid side of riding just a little too wholeheartedly. The ads apologize on behalf of the safety gear manufacturer for those still waiting for donor organs.

Having just recently bounced myself off of the pavement at a decent speed, I can vouch for Dianese's proficiency at keeping your skin attached to your body and your bones in one piece, but the ads are still a bit much. The tag line, "We keep bikers from becoming donors" is pretty catchy, though.
In Bad Taste: Dainese ads target organ donors originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 08:43:00 EST.
We've seen some amusing videos over the years here at Autoblog, many of which have taken the form of clever advertisements. This latest one comes from French automaker Citroën, and as far as humorous ads go, this is quickly becoming one of our favorites.

In the video after the jump, Citroën humorously imagines what it must be like for someone driving a bare-bones car while wishing he was driving something newer with all the bells and whistles. You know, stuff like power windows, sat-nav, a stereo, keyless entry... all the things we'd take for granted on a new car. Click past the jump to watch, and trust us, it'll put a smile on your face.

There's no shortage of reasons to ride an Italian sportbike. Not enough cash to drive a Ferrari or Lamborghini might be one, but the pure unadulterated euphoria is easily another. The way Aprilia figures, however, there are too many riders out there zooming around town on Ducatis and the like just for the look. But that's not what their bikes are for. In the video after the jump, Aprilia makes the case that they make real bikes for real men. It's a case just about any manufacturer could make about their own products, but Aprilia manages to do it with a dose of funny kicked in for good measure. Follow the jump to see for yourself.

Click above to watch the video after the jump

Some cars are unfairly derided as "chick cars," like the Mini Cooper or the Mazda MX-5. Less so the Renault Twingo. While we're sure it's a good car for its class, it doesn't exactly ooze testosterone. Which is fine, of course, because not every car is targeted at male customers. But Renault takes things a step further.

In a controversial television commercial, the French automaker depicts a little girl-on-girl encounter for Italian audiences. One that we won't describe here, but invite you to watch (over and over again) in the video posted after the jump.

Now Renault's done some racy spots for the Twingo before - two of which we've also posted after the jump - so perhaps the more surprising part is that it's been banned from the airwaves. In Italy, of all places, by the media conglomerate owned by the country's philanderer-in-chief, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

A political move, perhaps, in light of recent challenges to his tenure made by conservative leaders (reportedly including Ferrari chief Luca di Montezemolo)? We'll leave that to the pundits, and invite you to follow us beyond the jump to watch the videos for yourself. Hat tip to Doogie Hauser!

The Ford F-150 is an outrageously important vehicle here in America. Not only has it been the best-selling pickup truck for the past 33 years, it has out-sold every single vehicle in the country for 28 of those years. So when it comes time to update the bread-and-butter pickup, Ford has to make sure it is still poised to be a high-volume seller.

For 2011, Ford hit a bullseye by adding four new powertrains to the F-150 lineup - a 3.7-liter V6, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, and two V8 engines measuring 5.0 and 6.2 liters. By doing this, Ford says that there's no need to compromise when shopping the F-150 because its range of powertrains provide the most power, best towing capacity and best fuel economy in the class. Checkmate.

To promote this, Ford has just launched its latest series of television ads that showcase the "no compromise" theme. The automaker has signed comedian Dennis Leary to provide the voiceover, and you can check out both of the new ads, as well as Ford's press release, after the jump.

Question: How do Ford's new advertisements compare with these latest examples from Chevrolet?

Danya Solomon helps manufacturers find customer testimonials - Click above to watch video after the jump

The testimonial is one of advertising's oldest weapons. It's a simple formula: If someone spent his or her hard-earned money on a product and lived to tell about it, chances are it will be good enough for you. But where do advertising companies come up with the jokers that we see splashed all over our television screens? It turns out that they look to one individual with a knack for finding people who are especially loyal to a specific brand or product. Her name is Danya Solomon.

Solomon is responsible for rounding up the everyday Joes and Janes we've seen on ads from Ford and Toyota lately. She spends her days scouring the internet, standing in parking lots and busting down pool-hall doors to find consumers who are passionate about the products they buy. The next time you see an average atomic family stand up and profess their love for a sedan, chances are Solomon had something to do with bringing them to the small screen. Hit the jump to see a few of the commercials she helped cast.

Recently, we showed you a behind-the-scenes look at Cadillac's newest commercial featuring the CTS-V sedan out on Germany's hallowed-be-thy-name Nürburgring. Now, after all of the editing and post-production work has been completed, we're left with a brand new television ad spot simply dubbed "The Competition," showing viewers that one of the world's fastest sport sedans will strive to be better and better. How can you improve on 0-60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds and a 'Ring run in just 7:59.32? We're eager to find out.

Aside from the gloriousness of watching a CTS-V do what it does best out on one of the world's greatest road courses, we like this video because it makes mention of the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG - two vehicles that inspired Cadillac to raise the bar for its own sport sedan. Give credit where credit is due, after all. Still, we like stiff competition, and you can watch Cadillac's latest ad spot for yourself after the jump.
The 2011 Buick Regal has had a lot of premature exposure ahead of its on-sale date in the U.S. In fact, we've driven it not once, not twice, but thrice, and we're fairly confident that General Motors has done right in letting us Yankees taste the goodness that is the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia.

Buick is now starting its full Regal ad campaign in the States and the first television spot doesn't hide the fact the Regal was honed in Germany before making its way to our shores. It certainly isn't a bad thing to brag about. And as for Buick's suggestion about creating an American Autobahn, consider our hands raised.

How could we forget about the fantastic 1980's synthesizer-heavy hit "Cars" by Gary Numan? Not only is it an infectious tune, it acts as a sort of an ironic new-wave theme song for automobile enthusiasts. Now, some three decades later, Numan has paired up with the DieHard battery folks for a new ad showing just how powerful their car batteries are - a single one is apparently enough to handle Mr. Numan (who is looking moderately creepy in his old age) playing his oddly dispassionate hit on the horns of a whole fleet of cars.

See the commercial for yourself in the video after the jump, and if you've never heard the original song (or seen the original video), it's available for your viewing and listening pleasure. Good luck not getting it stuck in your head. Thanks for the tip, Chris!

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a really big deal for Chrysler. Not only is it the first product to launch since the Fiat takeover, but it needs to show the world that Chrysler is capable of making attractive, high-quality products, and that the brand is working to rebuild its image here in America. Thus, this first ad spot for the Grand Cherokee focuses on just that - telling the world that American manufacturing is getting back on track, and that Chrysler is working hard to build the best new products for the market.

We'll be driving the 2011 Grand Cherokee in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for a full report. In the meantime, hit the jump to not only watch the video of the new Jeep ad, but to read Chrysler's full press release explaining the new advertising campaign. High-res images of the new Grand Cherokee are available in the galleries below.

GM's controversial "Suicidal Robot" ad from 2007 - Click above to watch the video after the jump

General Motors is finally starting to get back on the right track, and under the marketing direction of Joel Ewanick, the automaker will reportedly be running an ad slot in the 2011 Super Bowl. As you may recall, GM stopped advertising during the Super Bowl in 2009, not long after the economic crash that eventually sent the company into bankruptcy.

Advertising during the NFL's big game is nothing new to Ewanick. While heading up the marketing department at Hyundai over the last few years, he and the team successfully launched a number of Super Bowl ads, promoting the Genesis line, as well as introducing the world to the automaker's Assurance program in 2009.

GM should be prepared to shell out a pretty penny for next year's ad slot, however. Automotive News reports that 30-second spots are selling for around $3 million. GM will be advertising alongside Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen and Audi in next year's game, and we're sure other automakers will announce their participation over the coming months. In any case, hopefully things go a bit more smoothly for The General than the controversial suicidal robot ad from 2007 (available after the jump).
Specifically, he was probably given complete control over everything marketing related for all four remaining brands at GM. If so, it appears that Ewanick is jumping in with both feet. It was only a few weeks ago that Chevrolet announced that it was moving its advertising account away from Campbell-Ewald after 91 years and now Advertising Age is reporting that the old agency may be back in the picture - although likely in a lesser capacity.

The agencies involved with Chevrolet business haven't even figured out who was being hired and laid off yet, and already Ewanick is indicating that everything is changing again. If Chevy is up for grabs again so soon, the recently awarded Cadillac account could be opened up again as well. While the opportunities are huge for gaining new business, we foresee a lot of sleepless nights ahead in the coming weeks for ad agencies hoping to do work for GM.

Actually, the Ford Fiesta marketing campaign started well over a year ago with the Fiesta Movement social media effort. The primary advertising campaign is now moving into the more traditional print and broadcast areas as well as a new phase of the "Movement." The first 60-second TV ad will air Tuesday night during American Idol and then spread to movie theaters to lead in the big summer blockbusters.

The more interesting aspect of the campaign will be the online webisodes that feature Fiesta Movement agents in short films. What's not to like about zombies and key fobs to advertise a hip new car? Another webisode may be a play on last year's Fiesta vs. Corvette comparison on Top Gear with the little Ford facing off against a Lamborghini this time.

The tag-line of the campaign will be "It's a pretty big deal" referring to all of the features and equipment that are either standard or available in the Fiesta including the seven airbags, push-button start, heated leather seats, SYNC and especially the 40 mpg highway fuel economy. Ford is heavily promoting this as a premium small car rather than just a cheap, small car. One of the print ads features a comparison of the air bag count as compared to the BMW 3 series.

In spite of that premium feel, Ford is still promoting value although not necessarily the way they have in the past with a low-ball entry level price. Instead, the hatchback Fiesta, which starts at just over $15,700, is being pitched against the Honda Fit Sport.

With down-sizers, urban dwellers and younger buyers being the primary target market a big part of the campaign will also involve ad buys on urban and adult contemporary radio stations as cable channels like BET. Check out some of the ads and webisodes after the jump.
