Rutledge Wood wins Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race in Long Beach

Rutledge Wood took home the checkered flag at this year's Toyota Pro/Celebrity race at the Grand Prix of Long Beach. The Top Gear USA presenter, Fox Sports commentator and Honda Wagovan owner managed to take pole position in qualifying, but lost his lead early in the race to Mark Steines. Steines has competed in the Pro/Celebrity race four times so far, but the Hallmark channel host of Home and Family couldn't quite hold on to the lead. Wood eventually made up the ground he had lost for the win. This year, all the participants went fender to fender in identically prepared Scion FR-S racers.

Meanwhile, Adam Carolla took first in the Pro category, and Toyota donated $5,000 on behalf of each participant to Racing for Kids. The charity benefits children's hospitals in the Long Beach area, and this year Toyota donated a total of $90,000. Check out the full press release below for more information.

Jay Leno's Garage finally welcomes a Ferrari, courtesy of Adam Carolla

We've been watching episodes of Jay Leno's Garage for a good long while now, but we can honestly say this is the first clip that's actually riled more than a chuckle. Adam Carolla stopped by with his 1966 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2, and while Leno isn't much of a Ferrari fan, he has an appreciation for older metal of any origin. The show starts off on the right foot as the two curmudgeon comedians lament the lack of auto interest among the younger generation and Leno bemoans how complicated modern Ferrari models are. But the real hilarity kicks in once the two take to the road.

Not long into the drive, the 330 GT 2+2 runs out of gas. We're not sure whether that's more embarrassing for Carolla, who drove the car to the Big Dog Garage, or Leno, who promptly took the keys. Either way, the Ferrari gets back on course with a little help from a five-gallon jug of fuel. Before long, a second issue rears its head: the speedometer begins wailing due to lack of lubrication. That wail eventually vibrates the gauge enough to shake the needle itself free from the face. Hilarity ensues. Check it out for yourself.

Adam Carolla wins Long Beach Grand Prix Celebrity/Pro race

Adam Carolla has thrice contested the Toyota Celebrity/Pro race held before the Long Beach Grand Prix, previously finishing third and ninth but this year taking the chequered flag in first place. After qualifying positions were set based on the last free practice times due to washout rains, Carolla started second behind Kim Coates of the F/X show Sons of Anarchy.

Three laps in, Carolla had got into the lead and crashes behind gave him some daylight. With under two laps to go, however, Hill Harper from CSI: NY had the front bumper of his Scion tC tapping Carolla's rear, but there wasn't enough time left in the race for Harper to get around.

Third place was nabbed by Toyota dealer Biff Gordon, with drifter Frederic Asabo (above left) the first professional to cross the line, in fourth.

The Car Show is cancelled

Word around the internetz today is that SPEED channel's The Car Show has been cancelled and will not be returning for a second season. The Car Show debuted last July 13 on SPEED and was seen by many enthusiasts as that channel's answer to the U.S. version of Top Gear on The History Channel, which we learned a few months ago was picked up for a second season. The Car Show leaves behind its panel of hosts, which included comedian and car guy Adam Carolla (who moves on to Celebrity Apprentice with Michael Andretti and Paul Teutel Sr.), Pulitzer Prize-winning auto journalist Dan Neil, former NBA star John Sally and host and producer of The Smoking Tire, Matt Farah.

Michael Andretti and Adam Carolla among cast of Celebrity Apprentice

NBC has announced the newest cast of "Celebrity Apprentice," and Michael Andretti will be among the big names vying for $250,000 for the charity of their choice. Andretti has personally accumulated an impressive 42 CART wins during his time behind the wheel, and his team, Andretti Autosport, pulled down its fair share of wins, including two Indianapolis 500 wins. Now Andretti finds himself among 17 other celebrities of varying fame as they vie for Donald Trump's affection. Arsenio Hall, Clay Aiken, comedienne Lisa Lampanelli, Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider, Car Show host Adam Carolla and Paul Teutul of American Chopper renown are also part of the cast.

Others include supermodel Cheryl Tiegs, reality TV star Victoria Gotti and former Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza. With so many strong personalities shoved into the show, sparks are bound to fly. Last season, the show managed to raise a record amount for its chosen charities. The contestants pulled in a staggering $3.1 million.

Autoblog gets a peek inside Adam Carolla's private garage

Adam Carolla has been called many things - and he has called many people different things - over the years. The noted television host, radio personality, actor, comedian, and famed podcaster is currently hosting The Car Show on SPEED TV with John Salley, Dan Neil and Matt Farah (it airs Wednesday evenings). On a more private level, Mr. Carolla is an avid collector of cars.

When Carolla asked if Autoblog wanted a closer look, we grabbed a camera and headed straight to his home for a private tour of his garage. If you were expecting a one-car shed crammed full of broken toys, outgrown bicycles and his grandma's worn clothing... think again. Carolla is an automobile enthusiast with a very nice, if eclectic, collection of racing and exotic vehicles in a spacious custom-designed storage area on his property.

The Car Show with Adam Carolla: First impressions from the set

Comparisons are both unavoidable and inevitable. Tomorrow evening, SPEED debuts its all-new and highly anticipated weekly automotive television series, The Car Show. Hosted by comedian and car buff Adam Carolla, with co-hosts Dan Neil, Matt Farah and John Salley, the self-touted "ultimate car lover's show" will be scrutinized from set design to sign-off as viewers attempt to parallel its agenda and personality with the BBC UK's wildly popular Top Gear and the more recent domestically sourced Top Gear USA show from The History Channel.

The glue that will need to hold the show together is the chemistry between the hosts.

After a day spent on the set at 20th Century Fox Studios in Los Angeles last week, we left smiling and very impressed.

As expected, a decent chunk of the production is filmed outside the studio. The venues vary from public roads to race tracks (both concrete and dirt in this particular episode) and other interesting gathering spots (Carolla interviews several amusing civilians and delivers some good laughs at the Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show). However, the glue that will need to hold the show together (and keep viewers from channel surfing over to Mythbusters) is the chemistry between the hosts back in the studio. They've got a good shot at this - these guys are a witty and amusing cast of characters.

Our take is that The Car Show is a clever blend of unscripted individuality. It is a carefully calculated mix of The Man Show humor, The Smoking Tire rambunctiousness, The Wall Street Journal objectiveness and the curiosity of the The Best Damn Sports Show Period. Bring out Peter Brock with his stunning Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe MKII, a live interview with Dario Franchitti and some special guests and the hour becomes even more compelling.

The Car Show with Adam Carolla - Click above to watch videos after the jump

SPEED has released the first volley of promos for its upcoming Top Gear U.S.A. rival, The Car Show with Adam Carolla. While one of the videos gives us a quick glimpse into what the show will bring to the table when it debuts next month, the rest introduce us to the program's four hosts. Each of the guys take time to tell us about their very first vehicles and driving experiences, from a Honda 400 Four in the case of Adam Carolla to multiple pilfered rides in the case of Dan Neil.

It's clear that each of the guys have a penchant for all things automotive, and there are some pretty entertaining personalities in the bunch. The Car Show hits the air on July 13, so we'll have to wait awhile before we can say with any finality whether Carolla, Neil, Matt Farah and John Salley make for more lively hosts than the Top Gear U.S.A. three musketeers. Adam Carolla's The Car Show debuts July 13 on SPEED

The History Channel and Top Gear are about to get some competition from SPEED, as The Car Show is set to premiere on July 13th at 10pm. Over the course of its one-hour run time, Adam Carolla intends to talk about anything and everything automotive. He, along with Dan Neil, John Salley and Matt Farah, should give the U.S. Top Gear trio a run for their money.

SPEED has a few more shows up its sleeves as well. In August, two new shows are set to premiere; Dumbest Stuff on Wheels and My Ride Rules. The former sounds like an automotive-themed version of The Soup, while the latter pits four folks against each other to see who has the best ride. Contestants will actually get to hop in each other's car to see exactly what every person's vehicle is like.

This summer marks an aggressive expansion in programming for SPEED, and The Car Show might just be one of the driving forces in a bid for increased ratings.

SPEED is betting big on its newest TV series, called The Car Show. You're most likely already aware that the program will be hosted by Adam Carolla, Dan Neil, Matt Farah and John Salley. Now, SPEED has announced that some well-known auto scribes are joining the team to pitch in on writing duty.

Aaron Robinson and Ezra Dyer have become a part of The Car Show family. Robinson is the Technical Editor at Car and Driver, while Dyer has written for a handful of publications and has a running column at Automobile. The two will add their automotive knowledge and insight to a team that already knows a good deal about cars. Well, we're sure of everyone except Salley. The Spider owns four NBA championship rings, was a member of the Chicago Bulls record-breaking 72-win season, and wasn't terrible in the film Eddie. None of that translates to cars, but we're hoping the writers stay away from attempting to squeeze his six-foot, 11-inch frame into a Mazda Miata.

No, we don't have any video yet of the pilot episode for Adam Carolla's The Car Show, which we announced yesterday has just been picked up by SPEED for a 13-episode run. But what we do have are the first still images from the pilot episode, which give a quick glimpse into what may become America's real Top Gear competitor.

What we can see are the show's hosts, which include Adam Carolla, Pulitzer Prize-winning auto scribe Dan Neil, former NBA star John Salley and Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire, in various states of taping and posing around cars. The three images show a wide variety of vehicles, including obvious supercars like the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and Chevy Corvette ZR1, but also odder additions like a Volt, DeLorean, Toyota Camry and what we think is a Ferrari 308 or 328. We can also see some of the set where they'll be taping the in-studio segments, as well as the outdoor arena where they'll be testing cars.

As we mentioned yesterday, don't get too attached to the show's current name, The Car Show, despite its presence on a monitor in one of these images. Chances are it'll be changed by the time the show airs. That is, unless the show's producers can convince The Consumer Automotive Repair Show to give it up.

Exclusive: Adam Carolla's The Car Show gets picked up by SPEED

We've been hearing about Adam Carolla's The Car Show for months, and we can now confirm that the show has been picked up by SPEED Channel. The folks at SPEED dropped us a line to let us know that the show has been picked up for 13 episodes, with an option for 13 more. The hour-long show, which is scheduled for a July premiere, will be hosted by Adam Carolla, super auto journalist Dan Neil, former NBA player John Salley and Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire. SPEED hasn't even released a press release yet, but we'll get something official once the show's July production schedule is fleshed out.

We told you back in December that Carolla's show will feature news and car conversations plus the typical pre-recorded features. And don't get too attached to The Car Show as the show's name, as SPEED tells us that there is a good chance it will change. The show will be produced by Mandt Bros. Productions.

We're not sure how this show will turn out, but you can bet that we'll be watching when it hits the airwaves in July.

Speed details new shows with Adam Carolla and Dan Neil

The Speed Channel is approaching the 15th anniversary of its original air date and apparently its going to get much more aggressive with its content in the coming years. Right now, Speed has 20 new shows in development and six of those are ready to show up in your DVR in 2011.

We know that Adam Carolla is working on a show that would be an automotive version of The Best Damn Sports Show Period. Other items in the works include a series of specials with Jay Leno, a reality series based on Gran Turismo 5 (produced in cooperation with Sony and Nissan) and a Gymkhana program to be helmed by The Fast and the Furious Producer/DIrector Adam Cohen.

Those represent part of the growing projects currently under development. These six new shows are ready to by slotted into the lineup (titles subject to change):

-Car Warriors: Think Joes vs Pros but for car construction. A team of average folks square off against all-star builders and their work will be judged by George Barris, Jimmy Shine and Mad Mike Martin.

-American Truckers: Rob Mariani talks about iconic rigs, amazing routes and unique cargo tales. Kind of a niche audience here but the "iconic rigs" could be interesting.

-Car Science: The producers of Sports Science and Fight Science have turned their attention to automobiles.

-Speedmakers: Surprisingly not a Breaking Bad rip-off, but an examination of anything that makes speed possible. The show will examine the Daytona International Speedway, go behind the scenes at Aston Martin and will generally focus on engineering feats designed to maximize speed.

-Ticket to Ride with Dan Neil: Pulitzer-prize winner Dan Neil turns his column into a television show. If Speed lets him handle the writing, this one could prove quite interesting.

-The 10: This one is for the NASCAR fans. The 10 will highlight the best that NASCAR has served up over the years with topics such as Most Bizarre Finishes, All-Time Races, Throw-downs and Closest Calls.

Report: Adam Carolla, Dan Neil to host Speed Channel pilot

Top Gear USA just not doing it for you? Well, here's some potentially good news: Speed Channel has reportedly inked a deal with Mandt Bros. Productions to pilot a new automotive television series (currently untitled) hosted by Adam Carolla, Pulitzer-winning journalist Dan Neil, former NBA 'baller John Salley and Matt Farah from The Smoking Tire.

Consider our interest piqued by the cast alone. We've seen Carolla do his thing - including witnessing the taping of the un-aired pilot for the defunct NBC Top Gear project, which has nothing to do with the current iteration on History - and he definitely knows and loves cars.

Moving past the headline-generating Adam Carolla, we've long been fans of Dan Neil, and John Salley was rather good on The Best Damn Sports Show Period. Finally, Farah has carved out a nice niche and has garnered a fan base of his own on The Smoking Tire.

As far as the show's format goes, it sounds similar to the Top Gear model with "news and conversation centered around cars, as well as pre-recorded features shot on the road." It could be interesting, but we'll take our usual wait-and-see approach...

Adam Carolla explains why he's not doing Top Gear USA

Ah yes,Top Gear USA. We had nearly given up hope for the American version of the hit British television series until friend-of-Autoblog Adam Carolla let slip details of the series' subsequent resuscitation on The History Channel during a taping of one of his CarCast episodes. At the time, it was thought that Carolla would be the only one of the original three cast members from the pilot to make the reborn series. As it turns out, that was not the case. What gives?

Apparently, Carolla has a pilot sitcom that he's currently taping for NBC, and the Peacock wouldn't let the funny man away long enough to join History's Top Gear USA. Sad for all, as reports from those who attended the taping of the NBC pilot almost universally praised Carolla's performance on the show.

Perhaps the most disappointed of all is Carolla himself, who openly dishes on the May 17 edition of his CarCast that he hopes his NBC sitcom is canceled so he can rejoin Top Gear. Click here to listen to the entire episode, but know that there's some foul language.

The annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach just wouldn't be the same without the rough-and-tumble slugfest known as the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race. Even though the actors, singers, pro athletes and television personalities who compete could probably care less, they have actually been driving safety-modded Scion tC street cars (StopTech brakes, window netting and roll cages) instead of Toyotas ever since the Celica went the way of analog television. No matter, Toyota is still the title sponsor of the whole shebang, even though there are no Toyotas in any of the racing classes tearing up the nearly two-mile street course in downtown Long Beach. Renaming it the "Scion Grand Prix..." just doesn't have the same ring to it anyhow.

If you're desperate to bet on these things, a Vegas pro has laid out the odds for the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race that takes place before the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in two week's time. In the number one spot, at 11-1, sits Adam Carolla, which gives him the same odds as pro Marty Nothstein and ahead of the odds smacked down on celebrity-cast-as-pro Keanu Reeves, who's at 12-1.

It also puts Carolla at the head of the celebrity class, before "Chuck's" Zachary Levi, skateboarder Tony Hawk, Mr. Megan Fox - otherwise known as Brian Austin Green, and soon-to-be-Predator-hunter Adrien Brody. The field of Scion tCs will blast around the 1.97-mile circuit on April 17, and to paraphrase Gone in 60 Seconds, "Go, Carolla, go."

Look who's on Autoblog! We recently made friends with funny man Adam Carolla, who you may remember from The Man Show, Crank Yankers and Loveline. More recently he's the host of The Adam Carolla Podcast [iTunes link] and Adam Carolla's CarCast. If you're not a CarCast listener yet, correct that gross oversight by subscribing here. Then sit back, relax and read the hilarious tale told by Adam below. Warning: The guy swears some, so man up before reading further.

The Time I Drove Off a Tow Truck

I was at a billiards hall drinking beer and shooting pool on a Friday night after a Man Show taping. It was a Man Show tradition. After every tape night we would go to a big pool hall and drink pitchers of beer until the production assistants got drunk enough to tell you what they really thought of you.

I was in the middle of a conversation with a P.A. about how Jimmy was the funny one when somebody ran up the stairs and yelled, "They're towing your car." I, along with a couple of people, ran down the stairs and across the street to find my car hooked up to a tow truck that was ready to drive away.

I'll bore you with a few quick details first because it's important to the story. One, the car was a brand new silver BMW M3, E36 body style, and two, the tow truck was one of those modern style ones with two prongs that slid under your back tires and lifted the whole rear end of the car off the ground.

I ran up to the gentleman and said, "This is my car, how can we take care of this?" He said, "You can follow me to the impound lot." I said, "How about we just take care of this right now? I'll pay you and we can both go our separate ways." He said, "That's not going to work," and began to drive away.

It's Chris² as both Shunk and Paukert join Dan and for Episode #166 of the Autoblog Podcast this week. First up, as usual, is the Autoblog Garage, housing a Suzuki Grand Vitara and a Kia Soul this week. From there, we take a quick trip through the Chicago Auto Show's highlights. The 2011 Ford Edge, Toyota Avalon, Honda Odyssey concept, and Hyundai Azera all figure in the conversation.

We leave the stockyards for the land of fantastic chocolate and mull a few of the things we're likely to see at the Geneva Motor Show. Toyota's updated RAV-4 and the 5 by Peugeot garner mention before we return stateside to talk about Chrysler's refreshed LX cars and Fiat-based Caliber replacement. On the entertainment tip, Adam Carolla's Top Gear USA revelation catches our attention, and then we entertain ourselves by beating up on Mercury's choice of the Tracer name for its upcoming version of the Ford Focus.

Adam Carolla CarCast tips off Top Gear USA might yet live on History Channel

Big news comes by way of Adam Carolla's CarCast today as it now appears that Top Gear USA is back on track. Instead of appearing on NBC, though, the show will apparently move to The History Channel. Exciting news indeed, especially for Carolla, who is apparently the only one of the three original cast members who was informed of the decision - what that means for the other two hosts remains to be seen.

We don't have any details on when Top Gear USA will finally hit the airwaves, but we'll be keeping an ear to the ground and an itchy trigger finger on our DVRs as soon as we know anything more. Want to hear the news straight from the source? Click here to listen to Adam Carolla's CarCast.
