Babies and cars go together like screaming blobs of insomnia and sleep machines. New parents quickly find that nothing soothes an irritable newborn quite like a quick drive around the block, and Volkswagen employed that truth in the company's newest ad for its stop/start technology. The spot follows one new dad as he tries to lull his child to sleep with the burble and purr of his Tiguan TDI. Unfortunately, his efforts are thwarted by the machine's start/stop system at each stop light.

While the clip does a great job of explaining how the start/stop system works and what it does for the buyer, Volkswagen took a bit of a gamble by having the system wake a sleeping babe. Automakers spend plenty of time trying to convince the world that their stop/start gear is as smooth as possible, and while this wee Volkswagen enthusiast falls asleep the moment the diesel engine wakes up, the implication is that the system isn't exactly imperceptible. Check out the
for yourself.
Continue reading Baby not keen on VW's stop/start tech

Baby not keen on VW's stop/start tech originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 May 2013 12:44:00 EST.
If you're a motorsports fan you've probably come across stories on the efforts Formula One has made to reduce its carbon footprint (KERS anyone?), but you might not have heard about what's being done in the world of NASCAR. Turns out it's pretty intense.

In 2008, NASCAR chairman Brian France got to work on creating a green initiative for the series. It wasn't unveiled until 2009 and it tackled the integration of biofuels, as in the switch to E85, employing alternative energy like the solar array at Pocono Raceway, and recycling. The initiative has a "managing director of green innovation," Dr. Mike Lynch, a website with ways everyone can get involved in making the Earth greener, hybrid pace cars and Miss Sprint Cup in a green race suit.

It's gotten bigger every year, and NASCAR will crank up its promotion with a 30-second spot that ran several times during the STP 400 at the Kansas Speedway. You can watch it below.
Citroën took advantage of this week's election of a new Pope to promote its clean diesel initiatives. The advertisement in the video below shows one determined Citroën engineer as he climbs atop the Vatican to take care of a pesky black smoke problem. After he works his magic, the famous chimney starts puffing out white smoke instead. We would think a clean diesel would yield no smoke at all, but hey, that's just us. We will say the opportunistic commercial is at least good for a chuckle. You can check it out in the ad below.

The French automaker unveiled a number of vehicles at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month, including the updated 2013 C3 shown below. The five door can be had with a spate of engine options, including at least four clean diesel options with power ranging from 70 to 115 ponies.
Continue reading Citroën helped speed up the Pope selection process a bit

Citroën helped speed up the Pope selection process a bit originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Mar 2013 11:01:00 EST.
Convertibles make you do funny things. Ask someone if they'd drive a hardtop in near freezing temperatures with all the windows down and they might not even answer, thinking the question so ridiculous. Give that same person a convertible they love and you might just have to ask them to please put the top up even when snow is on the ground.

That guy has to take precautions to enjoy his proclivities, and as this new ad for the Volkswagen Beetle Convertible shows, not everyone understands. Have a watch below, and note that there's just one woman in the minute-long spot, and she's nowhere near the car. Seriously, why didn't VW run this commercial during the Super Bowl?
Continue reading New VW Beetle Convertible ad needs no disguise

New VW Beetle Convertible ad needs no disguise originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Feb 2013 13:01:00 EST.
And not just any Devil, either. The Dark Lord as portrayed by none other than Willem Dafoe has an offer of wealth, fame and fancy dance moves for the hero of the newest Mercedes-Benz Super Bowl Commercial. The spot follows one guy as he fathoms the full width and breadth of the devil's influence, from rubbing shoulders with Kate Upton to challenging Usher to a dance-off and everything in between. The whole scenario hinges on piloting a new CLA around town. So, does our man succumb to temptation or does he hold out against the forces of evil? You'll have to watch the video below to find out.

This isn't the first time Kate Upton has showed up in a Mercedes-Benz commercial. The last time we saw the swimsuit model on our screens, she was tormenting a team of guys as they slaved to wash her CLA. You can refresh your memory by checking out that video here.
Continue reading Mercedes-Benz reveals Super Bowl ad with Kate Upton, the Devil and...
We've had some pets with some pretty strange proclivities. There was the long-haired dachshund that preferred climbing trees and riding skateboards to chasing cars, the doberman with a penchant for Krystal hamburgers and the border collie that loved herding cats more than chasing them, but we've never seen anything quite like the pup in the video below. The latest ad for the new Volkswagen Golf in the Netherlands features a one very confused little dog as it harries its owner over the course of a normal day.

From strange behaviors to an unusual series of barks, it would seem this particular dog was raised in the garage. You can take a closer look at the video below to see just what we mean. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have to go train our cats for a new range of tricks.
Continue reading Watch this doggone hilarious VW Golf ad

Watch this doggone hilarious VW Golf ad originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 Jan 2013 19:58:00 EST.
Audi has a 60-second spot planned for this year's Super Bowl to promote its S6 sedan, but exactly which spot will air is being put in the hands of Internet users. The ad follows a high schooler as he "embarks on one of the most pivotal moments of his adolescence: prom night." The spot is fixed up to the pivotal moment when he steals a kiss from the prom queen. From that moment, there are three possible endings.

Today, up until 11:59 pm, Audi is running three different versions on its YouTube channel and you can vote on which ending you'd like to see during The Big Game. The winning spot will run on YouTube before the game and then run in the first ad break after kickoff during the Super Bowl. Coca-Cola is running a similar interactive campaign, although its potential endings will involve cowboys, showgirls and a post-Apocalyptic badass, none of which we expect to make it into Audi's prom night spot. Scroll below to view all three alternate ending videos and cast your vote.
Continue reading Choose your own adventure in Audi's next Super Bowl commercial

Choose your own adventure in Audi's next Super Bowl commercial originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 Jan 2013 15:00:00 EST.
Reggae super-duper-star and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jimmy Cliff has been using music to send positive vibes out into the universe for decades now, so its no surprise that his message on behalf of Volkswagen is one of redemption.

Dubbed Sunny Side, this web-spot is VW's warmup of sorts for what promises to be another blockbuster year in the world of Super Bowl commercials. Without giving away the game, the euphonious commercial sees Cliff opening his arms and his heart to some YouTube 'celebrities' that might see courser treatment from the likes of Tosh.0, for instance. We can't help but be reminded of Coca-Cola's legendary 1971 Hilltop spot with the "I'd like to buy the world a Coke" lyric, too.

Enjoy the pre-Super Bowl VW spot below, and don't forget to pay it forward... your karma will thank you. For those of you that just can't get enough of commercial-making magic, we've included a "making-of" video, as well.
Continue reading VW Super Bowl teaser with Jimmy Cliff is like a less-mean Tosh.0 Web Redemption

VW Super Bowl teaser with Jimmy Cliff is like a less-mean Tosh.0 Web Redemption originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 Jan 2013 16:31:00 EST.
It used to be that a wild car dealership commercial meant a screaming frontman in a hideous suit making terrible puns and begging for you to help him out of some terrible predicament having to do with surplus inventory. No more - as production values have increased so has the number of commercials to so unusual that you spend the first few seconds trying to believe what you're seeing.

Parkway Motors and Parkway Hyundai of Valencia, California have added to the pile of commercials that make us say, "Hey, now that's interesting...." The Parkway Motors video joins a genre that blew up with the Swagger Wagon ad for the Toyota Sienna from almost three years ago, the recent Fiat 500L ad "The Motherhood" also part of the same club. The second, for Hyundai, "borrows" from Psy's "Gangnam Style" to move the kind of metal for "when you want to look cool, cruising in style."

You can check them both out below.
Continue reading Gangnam Style and Swagger Wagon influence makes it to local Hyundai dealer ads

Gangnam Style and Swagger Wagon influence makes it to local Hyundai dealer ads originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 07 Jan 2013 12:45:00 EST.
Lincoln made a rather assertive statement about the future of its products at the 2012 LA Auto Show. Rather than put any new vehicle on display for the first press day, the American premium brand placed a collection of classic cars from its past on the show floor. For the second day, that assortment was replaced with more than a half-dozen examples of the all-new 2013 MKZ. Following that, Lincoln teased a new ad campaign that was in the works, and it appears we now have the first extended promotional video.

Entitled "The Lincoln Motor Company," the spot acts as more of a mission statement, rather than an ad, featuring (once again) cars from Lincoln's past, as well as certain bits of Americana usually reserved for a Levi's ad. The video concluded with Lincoln reintroducing itself to the world, accompanied by a new name: The Lincoln Motor Company.

The video is likely to be the first of many in a large advertising blitz by the automaker, in concert with the rolling-out of the new MKZ. The sedan was the only new vehicle featured in the video, and Lincoln is betting heavily on this "reinvention" to bring customers in to see its new sedan.
Ford is unveiling three commercials this week that attempt to show how the new Fusion stands out from the crowd. The first one, called Disappearing, can be watched below.

"The competition is fierce in this segment, and it's important that we tried something different," said Amy Marentic, marketing manager for cars and crossovers for Ford. "We tried to use design and technology to stand out in a very crowded midsized market." Its commercials will also reflect something a little different, she said.

Prior to the new television campaign, Ford hired Chinese artist Liu Bolin, known as "The Invisible Man" for his ability to camouflage himself in plain sight in almost any situation. Bolin hand-painted cars parked along the side of a street, making the Fusion stand out as the only car visible in this series of clever print ads.

The second of three TV ads will show a Fusion driving off a cliff, demonstrating the one thing the new Fusion can't do. Chevrolet once tried showing a car flying through the air in an ad directed by Guy Ritchie that showed a young kid daydreaming that he was driving a Corvette that was airborne. It was pulled off the air after consumer groups complained.

"The overall message is, this car cannot do this," said Toby Barlow, advertising company Team Detroit's chief creative officer. "We hope common sense and reasonableness will take hold."

The third TV ad shows the new Fusion moving forward while other cars are going backwards. The ads will all air this week in prime time on the networks and during sporting events.
Continue reading Ford unveils first television ad for new Fusion

Ford unveils first television ad for new Fusion originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Nov 2012 12:33:00 EST.
Cats generally don't like car rides. Cats universally detest veterinarians. Yet to showcase the die-for-it allure of the Toyota Corolla in New Zealand (which isn't our Corolla but the European Auris), ad house Saatchi and Saatchi asked, "What lengths would a cat go to for a ride if they loved it?"

The answer is the 90-second tale of a cat who intentionally puts himself through seven feline hells to feed his need for another ride in the new hatchback. To the vet. Implausible, yes. Humorous, also yes. You can watch the ad below.
Continue reading This cat thinks the Toyota Corolla is to die for

This cat thinks the Toyota Corolla is to die for originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 15:03:00 EST.
We can't remember ever seeing a commercial for a bus at all, much less one that was genuinely epic, but we can cross both those firsts off our bucket list thanks to an ad for Denmark's Midtraffik public bus system.

Midttrafik wanted to make riding the bus cool, and the result is this 90-second spot directed by Marc Wilkins that runs through all the awesome features on buses like designer bells with cool functions, donuts of the tire-smoking kind and nice seats. But that doesn't even begin to describe it, so perhaps the tagline on the Midtraffik site puts it best: Drama, desire and plenty of bus. Don't miss it; the commercial (with subtitles) is below.
Continue reading Midttrafik commercial shows riding the bus is still cool

Midttrafik commercial shows riding the bus is still cool originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 12:45:00 EST.
For such a Lilliputian car, the Smart ForTwo has giant staying power. The hatch that still gets wary glances is not only still kicking here in the U.S., it's done ten-straight months of year-on-year sales increases. That kind of sales trend calls for an ad campaign, and we have it in three new 15-second - bite-sized in Smart-speak - commercials.

Two of them, "Tough" and "Joy Ride" have begun running now, the third, "Custom Made," will start airing later this month. They'll be rolled out absolutely everywhere a commercial can be shown, and they'll be joined by banner ads and Facebook activity. We could tell you what the new Smart ads are about, but remember, they're only bite-sized, and you'll find all three just below.
Continue reading 2013 Smart ForTwo gets three bite-size new ads

2013 Smart ForTwo gets three bite-size new ads originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Sep 2012 15:30:00 EST.
Nissan has unleashed a new ad campaign aimed directly at football fans. The six spots all feature former Heisman Trophy winners as they shack up in the "Heisman House," including 2011 winner Robert Griffin III as the rookie.

Other familiar faces also make a showing, including the sport's only two-time Heisman winner, Archie Griffin from The Ohio State University, as well as Herschel Walker and Matt Leinart. All in all, the ads boast 12 trophy winners and one professional actor. Sean Astin, star of Rudy, shows up for a spell alongside everyone else.

What does all this have to do with Nissan? Not much... aside from the fact that a few of the company's 2013 models show up on screen briefly.
Nissan has plenty to be proud of with its all-new 2013 Altima. The sedan promises to average 38 miles per gallon on the highway, which is best-in-class for a non-hybrid. The new Altima also boasts a lighter and stronger frame, increased power and quicker acceleration among its many improvements.

As you'll see below, crafting an ad campaign is that much easier when you have so much to be proud of. Scroll down to watch the first four commercials that Nissan has lined up to introduce its new Altima to America.

In the first two, Nissan plays it straight with a raft of back-patting and a couple of jabs at the competition from Honda and Toyota. The second two spots aim for the funny bone while also pointing out new technology and hammering away at those all-important fuel economy numbers.

We're especially fond of the last commercial, which cleverly points out that the horn will honk when the tires have been filled to the optimum level. Funny stuff.
Continue reading Nissan debuts first barrage of Altima ads

Nissan debuts first barrage of Altima ads originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 20 Jun 2012 12:58:00 EST.
Lincoln has released the first 30-second ad spot for the 2013 MKS, with its seventeen intial seconds spent covering the era of Lincoln glory from 1922 to 1976. The ad almost feels like an apology for the MKS, as if the ad team really wanted to sell the 2013 MKZ but was assigned the penalty-box MKS and had their protestations silenced with, "Just make something!"

We think the MKS deserves a little more love than that.

A European group called Responsible Young Drivers wanted to showcase the dangers of texting while driving, and got ad agency Publicis to help them out. The result: a two-minute spot that put trainee drivers in Belgium with an instructor who said part of their driving test would be to avoid an obstacle while texting a random sentence that he'd dictate.

Since nothing beyond a cone or two was hurt in the making of this video, we'll admit we laughed. That said, the message is clear.

Scroll down to see it for yourself. And FYI, a driver training instructor in Belgium doesn't need to wear a seat belt on a closed course... though maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea.
Continue reading This is how to teach teens the perils of distracted driving

This is how to teach teens the perils of distracted driving originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 30 Apr 2012 20:01:00 EST.
Kia has released the first commercial for the upcoming K9. The flagship sedan is set for a South Korean launch later this year, and details are beginning to emerge about the big four door. Power is said to come from either a 296 horsepower 3.3-liter V6 or a 3.8-liter V6 with 329 hp. The model will also be a showcase for new tech, including adaptive LED headlights that not only track with the steering mechanism but also adjust with the vehicle's speed to give the driver a greater field of view.

Indoors, a full-color heads-up display provides plenty of pertinent information, and an epic 12.3-inch screen in the dash handles the entertainment interface. Judging from the three photos released alongside the new ad, the K9 will also feature a gear lever inspired by the likes of BMW. Here's hoping the Kia piece is a bit more intuitive. Scroll down to check out the ad for yourself.
Continue reading Kia K9 flagship gets first commercial, trio of interior shots

Kia K9 flagship gets first commercial, trio of interior shots originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 Apr 2012 09:58:00 EST.
Chrysler has a lot of proof that its Detroit-centric brand ads are a big hit, including the potentially illegal use of the "Imported From Detroit" name. Chrysler and clothing company Pure Detroit have been locked in a legal battle over the use of "Imported From Detroit," but it appears the two sides may be willing to settle out of court.

The Detroit News reports that the parties involved have agreed to a March 27 mediation to settle the dispute. An out-of-court settlement might make sense for Chrysler, since the multi-national automaker is dropping the legal hammer on a local Detroit company that is living the "Imported From Detroit" mantra.

The Pure Detroit team has also hit hard with criticisms that the three vehicles featured in the ads were not built in Detroit, though the 200 is built in nearby Sterling Heights. Still, Chrysler has every right to defend its marketing turf, and the automaker is selling its own merchandise, with proceeds going to charity.
