Just when you thought you'd seen all the Super Bowl ads there were to see, Chevrolet is jumping in with a whole new spot for the Volt. The General Motors plug-in hybrid has been struggling to make sales headway for a number of reasons, including a now-closed government investigation into the vehicle's safety. With negative press at its peak in January, Volt sales took a nosedive last month - GM managed to move a paltry 603 units. With some Chevy dealers refusing their allocations, the automaker is understandably keen to put the spurs to Volt sales. This Super Bowl ad features a host of very curious aliens attempting to comprehend the science behind the propulsion system in the Chevrolet Volt.

It would seem GM believes buyers are being scared off from the Volt because they simply don't understand the mechanicals in the plug-in hybrid. If that's the case, this new commercial should help clear up any mysteries surrounding the vehicle. Hit the jump to see E.T. in action for yourself.
Continue reading Chevy turns to aliens to pitch Volt in Super Bowl ad

Chevy turns to aliens to pitch Volt in Super Bowl ad originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Feb 2012 13:01:00 EST.
We'll be the first to admit we weren't overly taken with the Super Bowl commercial Honda worked up featuring Matthew Broderick. The company has a long history of genuinely great advertising, and while the countless Ferris Bueller's Day Off references were clever, the ad didn't really come close to the cleverness found in the movie that inspired it. Fortunately, the company has just released a new spot chock full of... that certain something. The clip follows a spark of innovation from inception to realization as the new European Honda Civic hatchback. As usual, the commercial is well shot and narrated by none other than Garrison Keillor, a staple of Honda's British ads.

Look closely and you'll even see a shout-out to Honda's famous "The Cog" Rube Goldberg spot of a few years ago, as well. You can follow the trials and tribulations of Honda's little spark in the commercial after the jump.

The Mini Roadster ad campaign is continuing the "Another Day. Another Adventure." campaign begun with the Mini Coupe. The Roadster spots, directed by Peter Berg, started with two well-dressed gents darting through the various avenues of Istanbul. It picks up with them having, somehow, nearly driven off a bridge.

At that point, Mini-type antics take over, and you can watch them in high-def in the video after the jump.
Continue reading Peter Berg directs Mini Roadster cliffhanger

Peter Berg directs Mini Roadster cliffhanger originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 26 Jan 2012 11:29:00 EST.
There are many number of ways you can support your country's athletes heading into the Olympics. You could watch them on television. You could follow them to the site and get tickets for your favorite events. You could buy and wear some official team apparel. But if you're BMW, none of that will do. No, you're going to do some hooning. Something that involves, say, pulling donuts on the beach in a twin-turbo super-sedan.

That's just what the Bavarian automaker, which acts as official automotive partner (read: car sponsor) for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, has done to promote its participation and support the athletes. Which is fine by us, because it gives us the opportunity to watch... a twin-turbo super-sedan pulling donuts on the beach. Or to be more specific, the new M5 at the hands of stunt driver Wolfgang Weber at Pendine Sands in Wales.

Last time we checked in with Subaru Canada's commercial front we were greeted by the sexy side of sumo, a half ton of rikishi getting lathered up on car hoods and being fed strawberries. Woof.

The wrestlers have taken a break for this new commercial, which features Subie employees and a few customers showing off their schwerve just because they live in a Subaru world. It's a little out there, but we'll admit, the salesman's got some moves. Check out Subaru of Canada's newest ad spot after the jump.
Continue reading Subaru of Canada gets its schwerve on

Subaru of Canada gets its schwerve on originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 12:32:00 EST.
It's no secret that EMTs, firefighters and emergency room nurses have a perverse sense of humor, especially when it comes to motorcycle riders. It's a sort of defense mechanism against the visual horrors those occupations impart on those who work them, and with the mortality rate among bike riders as high as it is, there's no wonder why motorcycles are called donorcycles in first-responder circles. Even so, these ads worked up by an agency for Dianese in 2007 embrace the morbid side of riding just a little too wholeheartedly. The ads apologize on behalf of the safety gear manufacturer for those still waiting for donor organs.

Having just recently bounced myself off of the pavement at a decent speed, I can vouch for Dianese's proficiency at keeping your skin attached to your body and your bones in one piece, but the ads are still a bit much. The tag line, "We keep bikers from becoming donors" is pretty catchy, though.
In Bad Taste: Dainese ads target organ donors originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 08:43:00 EST.
The current state of the automotive industry is all about blurring lines. Cars and trucks used to be on opposite sides of the market until crossovers blurred the line. Coupes and convertibles have come closer together with the proliferation of the retractable hard-top. Even the line between manual and automatic transmissions has been blurred by the advent of CVTs, DCTs and sequential gearboxes of every sort. And the same could be said for advertising.

While automakers used to pitch their products in short commercial spots - and most still do - some have started producing their own content. That is to say, the intermission has become the main act. Just look at BMW's film series The Hire, or Audi's new television program Untitled Jersey City Project.

Filmed by True Blood and Game of Thrones director Daniel Minahan, the plot revolves around a couple of young architects hired to build a stadium in Jersey City, just across the river from Manhattan, but soon find themselves in over their heads. The sequence jumps around a moving timeline, starting with the climax, as the protagonist zips around New Jersey in his new Audi A6. Each two-minute episode is set to air on FX every Sunday night for eight weeks... or you could just jump past the break and watch them all right here.
Continue reading Audi blurs the line between show and commercial with "Untitled Jersey City Project"

Audi blurs the line between show and commercial with "Untitled Jersey City Project" originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 19:01:00 EST.
General Motors' latest pair of Chevrolet Volt commercials reiterate the plug-in's ability to switch between electric-only operation and "range-extended" mode - because people apparently still don't get that - by focusing on one fictional Volt owner's unexpected gas station stop.

The clips center on a Volt owner who swings by a gas station for a potty break, but instead of simply stepping out of his plug-in ride and making a mad dash for the bathroom, the Volt owner is stopped by a man and his son who question the Volt's appearance at such an establishment. Ain't that the way? It is when the public still doesn't quite understand how your product works, which GM hopes these commercials will help rectify.

Of the audience, General Motors asks, "Ever seen a Volt at a gas station?" Can't say that we have, but The General also reminds viewers that on those "special occasions" when a trip is a "little farther" than usual, the Volt can indeed be fueled with some range-extending gasoline.

At the close of the clips we once again see GM's tagline "It's More Car Than Electric," but "Electric when you want it, gas when you need it" appears as well. Follow the jump to check out GM's latest Volt spots.
Continue reading Latest Chevy Volt ads remind us that this car swings both ways

Latest Chevy Volt ads remind us that this car swings both ways originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 23 Sep 2011 14:59:00 EST.
We have to wonder what it's like to be in automotive advertising. It can't all be fun and games, but the thought of sitting around, dreaming up a hair-brained stunt and then seeing said exercise come to life must be some kind of thrill. BMW has just released a new spot for the company's 1 Series M Coupe, and it involves plenty of rolling expanses of asphalt, heaping helpings of tire smoke and more than a little car control. The premise is pretty simple: a lone 1 M Coupe is left to slide around on an airfield until the driver feels comfortable enough to begin threading the vehicle through a set of concrete walls.

Each wall has a cut out just large enough to fit the coupe. Drama ensues.

Now, we hate to go all internet on the fine folks at BMW and drop a fake bomb here, but those walls look to be tinged with more than just a little CG. Still, we'll be the first to apologize if BMW actually trusted a driver to thread the needle over and over again with the company's newest creation. Hit the jump to check out the clip for yourself.
Continue reading BMW 1 Series M Coupe is off the wall(s)

BMW 1 Series M Coupe is off the wall(s) originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 09 Jun 2011 12:32:00 EST.
Remember the Embrace Life seatbelt advocacy ad? The spot, which was created by The Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, featured a man driving an imaginary vehicle, and when he braced for impact (in his living room), his wife and daughter rushed to form a seatbelt. The safety ad went viral almost immediately, with over 13.7 million YouTube views to date, while at the same time really driving home the fact that safety belts saves lives. A truly beautiful effort.

The Sussex team is looking to strike gold once again with a new spot, this time taking aim at motorcyclists in a new commercial about motorcycle safety. The ad, titled "Stay a Hero, Stay Safe," doesn't have quite the same impact as the Embrace Live commercial, but it's still worth watching. Hit the jump to see for yourself.
Continue reading Stay a Hero, Stay Safe campaign for motorcycle safety hits a familiar note

Stay a Hero, Stay Safe campaign for motorcycle safety hits a familiar note originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 May 2011 18:29:00 EST.
Volkswagen created a serious stir with its Super Bowl commercial featuring an adorably pint-size Darth Vader, and now Marvel Comics is riffing on the same theme as part of the run-up to the upcoming Thor feature film. The studio has gone through the trouble of recreating the German automaker's "The Force" ad nearly scene-for-scene... with one notable exception.

Despite the fact that Acura has saddled up with Marvel for the latest comic flick, the hero car in this particular spot is not the new TL. That's probably all for the best given the final outcome.

While Volkswagen's tiny Vader couldn't quite bend the force to his will, this runt manages to have a little better luck with Thor's hammer. We won't spoil the ending for you. You'll just have to check out the full spot in the video after the jump.
Buick "What Matters" TV spot - Click above to watch video after the jump

This weekend, Buick is introducing a new ad the company calls its "brand anthem." Car companies do this once in a while. It's almost always a 60-second TV spot meant to illustrate a new idea of what the brand represents.

In Buick's case, its new anthem, to paraphrase, is "luxury for regular folks." The actual message the ad carries is, "Your Kind of Luxury." Buick says this is not a permanent tagline or slogan, but that it is dropping "The New Class of World Class," which it's been using as a tag for more than a year. The brand will go without a consistent slogan in future.

Buick is the brand that, more than any other, is trying to tell the public that times have changed. "Quiet" luxury is in, the marketers say. Buick ad chief Craig Bierley says that Buick is going back to its image roots established in the 1950s and 60s. He describes Buick in those years as the perfect car for the doctor who made house calls. If the doc drove a Cadillac, he would be saying that his rates were to high, Bierley explained. If he drove a Chevy or Dodge, he wasn't successful enough. Buick conveys authority and taste without showing off.

Buick is a big sponsor of the NCAA Men' Basketball Tournament. In many ways, it's the perfect marketing vehicle for Buick, reaching young sports fans as well as the older ones who are watching their alma maters compete in the Final Four. If they have alma maters, they're college educated. If they're college educated, it figures they have money to spend.

Buick buyers' average age is in the low 60s, a nice drop from 70s, which it was in 2009.

Cadillac, the Buick marketers tell us, is for people who like to show off their success. Buick is for the successful person with a more understated lifestyle. In other words, Caddy is the brand for the college hoops stars who are going pro. Buick is for the people who buy the tickets. Check out the new spot after the jump.
2012 Audi A6 commercial - Click above to watch video after the jump

Audi has just released a new commercial to underscore the company's commitment to lighter materials in the 2012 A6. In its never-ending quest for better fuel economy and performance, the automaker has embraced aluminum as the material of choice for much of the sedan's unibody structure. The metal has allowed Audi to increase the interior room of its products without suffering a weight or rigidity penalty. Of course, attempting to explain that in a way that doesn't sound like a more boring interpretation of high school chemistry class is a bit of a challenge.

That's where the miracle of CGI comes in.

The ad turns slabs of aluminum into an easily malleable material able to be stretched and formed into any shape, allowing the audience to draw easy parallels between the sculpting on screen and the work of the automaker's engineers. Sure, an A6 is impressive, but we'd like to see this guy work up a giraffe.

We've seen some amusing videos over the years here at Autoblog, many of which have taken the form of clever advertisements. This latest one comes from French automaker Citroën, and as far as humorous ads go, this is quickly becoming one of our favorites.

In the video after the jump, Citroën humorously imagines what it must be like for someone driving a bare-bones car while wishing he was driving something newer with all the bells and whistles. You know, stuff like power windows, sat-nav, a stereo, keyless entry... all the things we'd take for granted on a new car. Click past the jump to watch, and trust us, it'll put a smile on your face.
The report notes that the automaker changed its European ad agency last year, and that with the recent departure of Mike Colleran as the company's COO earlier this month, there's a good chance that the Swedish automaker will be looking for fresh ideas on the advertising front. Former Volkswagen guru Matthias Seidl has taken over COO duties for the time being.

While speaking with AN at this year's Detroit Auto Show, Knut Simonson, head of global marketing for Saab, said that his company would review McCann Erickson this spring. The ad agency has held onto the Saab account since 2007, though after last year's dismal sales outcome, Saab is likely looking for new ways to breathe life into the company's American presence.

There's no shortage of reasons to ride an Italian sportbike. Not enough cash to drive a Ferrari or Lamborghini might be one, but the pure unadulterated euphoria is easily another. The way Aprilia figures, however, there are too many riders out there zooming around town on Ducatis and the like just for the look. But that's not what their bikes are for. In the video after the jump, Aprilia makes the case that they make real bikes for real men. It's a case just about any manufacturer could make about their own products, but Aprilia manages to do it with a dose of funny kicked in for good measure. Follow the jump to see for yourself.

Click above to watch the video after the jump

Some cars are unfairly derided as "chick cars," like the Mini Cooper or the Mazda MX-5. Less so the Renault Twingo. While we're sure it's a good car for its class, it doesn't exactly ooze testosterone. Which is fine, of course, because not every car is targeted at male customers. But Renault takes things a step further.

In a controversial television commercial, the French automaker depicts a little girl-on-girl encounter for Italian audiences. One that we won't describe here, but invite you to watch (over and over again) in the video posted after the jump.

Now Renault's done some racy spots for the Twingo before - two of which we've also posted after the jump - so perhaps the more surprising part is that it's been banned from the airwaves. In Italy, of all places, by the media conglomerate owned by the country's philanderer-in-chief, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

A political move, perhaps, in light of recent challenges to his tenure made by conservative leaders (reportedly including Ferrari chief Luca di Montezemolo)? We'll leave that to the pundits, and invite you to follow us beyond the jump to watch the videos for yourself. Hat tip to Doogie Hauser!
An affordable car should get an ad campaign to match. Following that logic, Chevrolet's Middle Eastern advertising team put together a spot to highlight the low price of the all-new Cruze. Rather than slapping some highly-stylized photography work or clean studio images onto the side of a billboard, Chevy had an artist set to work on the blank canvas with a blue marker. For over eight hours.
Whether they're challenging Porsche to a duel, littering the streets with packaging or jiggling some chubby dude's man boobs, Mini has a certain flair for creativity when it comes to its advertising. The latest chapter unfolds in Canada, where an interactive "vending machine" billboard was projected onto the side of a building near Toronto's Air Canada Centre (after a Leafs game, from the look of things).

The brainchild of advertising agencies Media Merchants and Taxi, the billboard invites passers by to text their favorite Mini from their phone. After doing so, they're treated to an animated display showing their choice making its way to the bottom of the virtual vending machine. Unfortunately the public can't then drive off in said Mini, but it might prompt some Canucks to stop by their local dealership and do exactly that. Follow the jump to check out the video for yourself.
Skoda is busy pushing its new Fabia vRS on the unsuspecting public across the pond with a new ad for the pint-sized hatch. Far from the cuddly machines of the competition, the Fabia vRS is apparently hewn melted-down katana swords, razor wire, snake venom and burnt rubber. Even the windshield wipers are constructed from bits of a crossbow, at least in make-believe land. The spot features manly men doing manly things to build the little five-door. Sure does make you wonder what goes into putting the 2011 Dodge Challenger 392 together.
