Honda has pulled the sheet on the redesigned Crosstour here in LA, showing a car that is more refined, perhaps, than the outgoing model, but still not exactly what we'd call "a looker."

The usual suspects have been addressed in this refresh: the Crosstour's front fascia, fenders and side skirts have all been tweaked. The 2013 Crosstour will be available with both a 2.4-liter, 192-horsepower four-cylinder engine, and a more powerful, 278-hp 3.5L V6. Both engines are from Honda's new Earth Dreams family of powerplants and deliver better fuel economy - 22/31 city/highway miles per gallon for the four-banger - than last year's offerings.

Whether or not you care for the Crosstour's new mug (take a look at it on Honda's LA show stand in our attached gallery) you have to give it up to the company for making it easier than ever to buy, thanks to a lower MSRP. The Crosstour now starts at $27,230, which is $525 less than last year's model.
The Honda Crosstour has been something of an automotive whatcha-ma-call-it. Buyers have found it hard to identify what the high-riding wagon is all about, and so have we. Honda even started out by calling it the Accord Crosstour, and then changed its name to help give it more of its own identity. But with other popular crossovers already in Honda's stables, trying to carve out a niche for the Crosstour has been no easy task.

To help strengthen the identity of the crossover-wagon, Honda has updated the Crosstour with more "refined styling," a number of content improvements and a lower base price. The first thing you will notice is the more utilitarian, "rugged" styling, with a pronounced front clip, fender flares and side skirts.

Under the hood lies one of Honda's new Earth Dreams family of engines. The base 2.4-liter inline-four makes 192 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while returning 22 miles per gallon city and 31 miles per gallon highway. The available 3.5-liter V6 produces 278 horsepower, up seven from the outgoing V6, making it the most powerful engine in the Earth Dreams family. The V6 returns 20/29 for front-wheel-drive models, and 18/28 for V6 models equipped with Real Time 4WD.

The Crosstour is also available with a suite of safety technologies, including a backup camera, forward collision warning and lane departure warning. A set of less-technical safety improvements have been applied as well, including reshaped headrests for improved visibility and an expanded view driver's mirror.

The 2013 Honda Crosstour comes with a $27,230 base price - $525 less than the outgoing model - and goes on sale November 30, 2012. Only time will tell if these changes are effective enough to sway more buyers, but if you may be interested, check out the press release and video below.
Continue reading Honda yanks sheet off 2013 Crosstour, adds lower base price [w/video]

Honda yanks sheet off 2013 Crosstour, adds lower base price [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 Nov 2012 10:01:00 EST.
When the Honda Accord Crosstour launched back in 2009 as a 2010 model, we didn't quite know what to make of it. We weren't exactly taken with its styling and we didn't get its value equation, either. It drove well enough, but fell behind the segment's fierce competition in terms of space, amenities, visibility and pricing. The market seemed to agree, and the model never got near Honda's (traditionally conservative) sales projections of 40,000 units per year.

Since that time, Honda has tried to build momentum with the model by deleting its Accord appellation (it's now just "Crosstour") and adding a four-cylinder model, but sales haven't budged. Through August, Ward's Auto reports that Honda has managed to shift just 12,857 units, and its best-ever year, 2010, it only managed 28,851 units.

For 2013, the Crosstour is getting its biggest push since launch with its first major rework, and the logic behind the facelift is interesting. According to Ward's Auto, Honda believes that a major reason why the Crosstour has failed to find buyers is because people didn't know what to call it (or presumably, what to cross-shop it against). Honda marketed the model as a crossover, but as Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president-product planning opines, "people weren't exactly sure what it was (because) it was a tweener." So Honda responded by showing the thinly disguised 'concept' seen above at the New York Auto Show in April, and the showcar is expected to match the as-yet-unseen 2013 production model almost exactly. If that's the case, Honda will clearly butch up the five-door's lines for the new model year, with a squared-off jaw, bolder grille, contrasting lower cladding, and so on.

What's more, Honda is also addressing our criticism about a lack of amenities by giving the cabin a new eight-inch information display, revamped trim, keyless start and paddle shifters on the V6. In addition, the V6 model will receive a new six-speed auto in place of the 2012 model's five-speed unit. To combat the Crosstour's inherently poor visibility, Honda is fitting all models with a standard backup camera and its trick LaneWatch blind-spot system will be offered as an option.

Will these changes be enough to jumpstart the Crosstour's fortunes in the marketplace? Have your say in Comments.
Honda butching up Crosstour for 2013 because 'people weren't exactly sure what it was' originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 14:30:00 EST.
You almost have to feel sorry for Patricia Smith, the former controller at Baierl Acura who embezzled over $10 million from the suburban Pittsburgh dealership. Despite having stolen roughly $4,000 a day, seven days a week, for seven years, Smith's personal automotive aspirations extended no further than a new Honda Crosstour. Apparently being a criminal mastermind does not ensure good taste.

According to Automotive News, Smith did buy the requisite fleet of vehicles normally associated with so much dirty money but she gave away nine of the ten - including a ragtop Shelby Mustang for her husband. The 58-year-old woman's purchases also included charter flights to Europe and the Caribbean, Super Bowl tickets, four houses, and an autographed first edition of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, according to the report.

Her spending spree extended into the ridiculous, as Smith paid for a VIP Mass with the Pope, lunch catered by the Barefoot Contessa, and dinner with Kevin Spacey. Throughout all this profligate spending, Smith was earning a $53,000 annual salary, according to the report. She explained away her newfound wealth by saying she had invested in airline stock and worked as an online travel agent. Yet the woman was not exactly caught red-handed by her employer, as you might expect. After an e-mail from the dealership CFO questioned her accounting, she quit, and then confessed her crimes to the U.S. Attorney's office shortly thereafter, according to the report.

Smith's crimes ranked her fourth in a national survey of embezzlement crimes in 2011, according to AN, for which she earned a 78-month prison term that starts in July.
Woman embezzles $10M from car dealer, buys 2011 Honda Crosstour originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 21 Jun 2012 19:00:00 EST.
This is the 2013 Honda Crosstour Concept, along with its "more capable-looking styling" that's been revealed today at the New York Auto Show.

Honda is re-aiming the Crosstour at "active consumers," so those new capable looks come down to foglights shrouded in embossed polygons, and the soft-roader rugged-esque front bumper, and dark trim skirting the bodywork. There's also a new grille that helps clean up the front end. The rear gets stressed horizontals to emphasize the concept's width, but this is the only photo Honda has released, so we're not sure yet what other changes (if any) are in store for the 2012 model. The new face looks modestly better than the original, but based one what we see here, we're unclear how this updated look will improve the Crosstour's frigid sales.

Inside, Honda says the new production Crosstour will be available with an eight-inch display and LaneWatch blind-spot detection along with updated trim and keyless ignition. As before, motivation will come courtesy of a 192-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder or a 3.5-liter V6 that shifts through a six-speed paddleshift transmission (Honda promises that the latter has been reengineered for more power). Don't be fooled by the 19-inch wheels, though - the production version set to go on sale this Fall will get 18-inchers.

We'll update this article with a gallery of live images shortly after the Crosstour Concept's official debut at the New York Auto Show, so stay tuned for more views of its "capable-looking" refreshening.
Continue reading 2013 Honda Crosstour Concept is, um, better?
Honda has announced it will debut a concept version of the 2013 Crosstour at the New York Auto Show next month. Details are scarce at the moment, but we wouldn't be surprised if the vehicle turns out to be a thinly veiled look at the next version of the funky crossover. Honda has a long and storied history of rolling out concepts with more than a passing resemblance to its production models. Given that the Crosstour has only been on the market for a couple of years, we aren't anticipating an all-new model, or perhaps even a heavy redesign.

Back in December, Honda President and CEO Tetsuo Iwamura told Autoblog that he was "really disappointed" with sales of the Crosstour, which he maintained has "very beautiful styling." Even so, Iwamura acknowledged that Honda would further refine the vehicle's styling and performance. As to the latter, Honda now offers buyers the ability to outfit their Crosstour with a more fuel-efficient four-cylinder. The move was largely thought to be in response to the fact that competitors like the Toyota Venza are available with four-pot motivation.

Still, all the engine options in the world won't save the Crosstour from its inherent design issues. Specifically, the Crosstour offers compromised rear visibility and cargo area, not to mention its highly controversial appearance. Will the concept headed to New York address those ails? We certainly hope so. Hit the jump for the brief press release.
Continue reading Honda to reveal Crosstour concept in New York

Honda to reveal Crosstour concept in New York originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Mar 2012 10:43:00 EST. Back when Honda launched the Crosstour in 2010, it fielded questions from the media asking why it chose to forego a four-cylinder model. At the time, officials indicated that a four-cylinder engine would result in minimal fuel economy improvements, noting that the company's aim was to target premium-minded customers for whom the 3.5-liter V6 seemed more appropriate.

But with the fog of slow sales often comes a need to rethink strategies, and Honda has responded to sluggish demand for the Crosstour with a new four-cylinder model for 2012 with a just-announced base price of $27,655 (*plus $810 in destination charges). That's about $2,500 less than a comparable six-cylinder model.

Despite Honda's earlier assertions, the new 192-horsepower, 162 pound-feet of torque 2.4-liter model actually does receive a rather substantial bump in fuel economy performance. The new front-drive trim nets 21 miles per gallon in the city and 29 mpg on the highway - the V6 only manages 18/27. Both the new four-cylinder and 271-hp/254 lb-ft V6 come with a five-speed automatic as standard kit.

In equipment news, all Crosstour models will now receive standard auto-dimming mirrors, a USB hookup, Bluetooth telephony and standard backup camera, among other features.

Honda shifted 17,974 Crosstour models last year, down 37.9 percent from its 2010 total of 28,851 units. The company had targeted sales of 40,000 units annually.
Continue reading Honda Crosstour four-cylinder to start at $27,655*

Honda Crosstour four-cylinder to start at $27,655* originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Jan 2012 10:36:00 EST.
The figures have been tallied for the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. in 2011, and not surprisingly, the Ford F-Series pickup truck is king of the heap once again. Dealers sold a total of 584,917 F-Series units in 2011, beating out the second-place Chevrolet Silverado by 169,787 units. The Toyota Camry filled out the podium with 308,510 sales, which left the top three unaltered from their 2010 rankings. Fourth place went to the surging Nissan Altima, which jumped from its seventh place position last year. Likewise, the Ford Escape enjoyed a jolt in popularity as well. While the aging CUV took the 13th spot last year, the Ford sold 254,293 units to take fifth place in 2011.

That bumped the Honda Accord and its Crosstour variant to sixth place. Interestingly enough, the Honda duo just barely beat out the Ford Fusion by 5,000 units. Were the two Honda models to be split, the Fusion would have easily knocked the Accord further down the list. Likewise, the Toyota Corolla and Matrix teamed up to edge out the Chevrolet Cruze for ninth and tenth places, respectively.
Ever since the launch of the, uh, polarizing Honda Crosstour, the rumormill has been buzzing with word that Honda might someday add a four-cylinder engine to the lineup. Makes sense, since the Accord on which it's based offers a four-pot, and the CUV's key competitor, the Toyota Venza, also offers a more efficient four-cylinder powertrain.

The 2012 Crosstour - remember, it no longer wears the Accord name - will now be offered with a 2.4-liter inline-four in its EX and EX-L trims. Rated at 192 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, the front-wheel-drive, four-cylinder Crosstour is good for up to 29 miles per gallon on the highway (21 mpg in the city), and is mated exclusively to a five-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the top-trim EX-L V6 model, none of the four-cylinder Crosstours will be available with all-wheel drive. What's more, four-cylinder models will ride on 17-inch alloy wheels, whereas six-cylinder Crosstours can be had with 18-inch rollers.

New powertrain aside, the Crosstour remains largely unchanged for 2012. A couple of new paint colors are available, and formerly optional equipment like Bluetooth, auto headlights, a backup camera and an automatic dimming rearview mirror are now standard. Hit the jump for the full details in Honda's press release.
Continue reading Honda Crosstour gains four-cylinder model for 2012

Honda Crosstour gains four-cylinder model for 2012 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Dec 2011 16:30:00 EST.
In a roundtable with reporters at an event related to the Tokyo Motor Show, Tetsuo Iwamura, President and CEO of American Honda, told us that he's been surprised by the Crosstour crossover's slow sales:

"In the case of the Crosstour, I'm really disappointed because that's a nice car, [with] very beautiful styling, and it gives very good driving performance as well as packaging. But yet, we went a bit too far."

The five-door CUV has been struggling since it went on sale as a 2010 model. Through November, Honda has sold just 16,679 units this year - down nearly 36 percent from the 25,927 units tallied by this point in 2010. Honda had initially projected annual sales of 40,000 units.

Iwamura confided that, in retrospect, launching the CUV branded as the Accord Crosstour was probably a "misstep," so the company subsequently shortened its moniker to Crosstour in order to give the vehicle more of a standalone identity. In our 2009 First Drive article, we praised the Crosstour's solid driving dynamics but criticized it for awkward styling, poor packaging and visibility, a short options list and premium pricing.

In our discussion with Iwamura, we noted that while Honda continues to enjoy solid sales numbers for its longtime mainstream offerings like the Accord, CR-V and Odyssey, newer models - particularly niche offerings - have had a tougher time finding buyers (see: CR-Z, Insight, Ridgeline). Iwamura expressed that Honda is actually "quite satisfied" with sales of most of its vehicle lines, maintaining that he sees nothing systematic within Honda that has prevented the company from generating new hit models. Further, Iwamura vowed to continue development of its niche players.

In the case of the Crosstour, Iwamura pledged, "With further refinement of styling and performance, it will be a very good success, a leading model."
Honda CEO disappointed by Crosstour sales, vows to make it successful originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Dec 2011 13:01:00 EST. The oddly shaped, curiously impractical crossover carries on for another model year, albeit with a slightly shortened name. That's right, for 2012, Honda has dropped the 'Accord' name from the Crosstour, meaning it will now have to stand alone in the automaker's lineup (and on the company's sales charts, natch).

Name change aside, there aren't many big updates for the 2012 model year. Base EX models now benefit from standard auto on/off headlamps, rear-view camera, Bluetooth and USB audio interface. Add a few new colors to that list, and we've wrapped up the whole list of updates for 2012. Pricing starts at $30,340 for the entry level 2WD EX, excluding $810 for destination.

The Crosstour continues to be powered by Honda's tried and true 3.5-liter V6, producing 271 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque, mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Curiously, there's still no four-cylinder option, though that may change after an updated inline-four debuts in the CR-V later this year.

Follow the jump for Honda's full press blast about the 2012 Crosstour, and remind yourself of its not-so-pretty face in our attached high-res image gallery. If we're honest, it's still a little sad that we live in a world where the Honda Element can no longer exist, but the Crosstour continues to live.
Continue reading Honda tweaks Crosstour moniker, no longer sullies Accord's good name

Honda tweaks Crosstour moniker, no longer sullies Accord's good name originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 10:00:00 EST.

The 2011 Honda Accord Crosstour is arguably one of the ugliest beasts to beat up the streets in a long time. From its too-high stance to its odd, bulbous profile and protruding grille, the look is wrong on many levels.

For one Massachusetts driver, though, Honda's own design wasn't quite wrong enough. No, this misguided owner took his Crosstour from pretty ugly to downright terrifying, all with the simple application of badges and decals. Starting with an ill-advised Type R badge up front, the madness didn't stop until there were matching Apple decals adorning the rear deck.

In between, the front and rear got red Type R-style Honda emblems, red pinstriping and, as if all that weren't enough, what appears to be a "V6" badge on the grille - you know, to flaunt the 3.5-liter underhood. Hit the gallery and see what else you can decode from this parts-store lettering extravaganza. Thanks for the tip, Frank!

Are unconventional droptops becoming the darling of the automotive industry? Honda is evidently paying close attention to the new Murano CrossCabriolet from Nissan, and apparently it likes what it sees. Historically averse to convertibles (small-volume jobs like the S2000 excluded), the Japanese automaker now plans to offer a soft-top CUV of its own, and the unlikely choice for a roofectomy is the slow-selling Honda Accord Crosstour.

Unimaginatively dubbed the Accord Crosstour Cabriolet, this convertible features a two-plus-two interior seating arrangement and unlimited headroom. Under the hood sits the familiar 3.5-liter V6 engine, which produces 271 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Like the fixed-roof Crosstour, the Cabriolet will be offered with front- and all-wheel drive, giving it more configurablility than the AWD-only Murano. Like the Nissan, the cabrio conversion has resulted in two fewer doors and the merciful exclusion of a basket-handle structural support. Oddly, to our eyes, the Crosstour Cabriolet almost looks more attractive than the hunchbacked hardtop - at least with the top down.

When it goes on sale this summer, the Honda Accord Crosstour Cabriolet will sit atop the Crosstour's pricing structure. The fully-loaded Crosstour we reviewed in 2010 had a sticker price of $36,930, so expect the convertible to come in right at a stitch over the $40K mark. That's a bit less than the $47,190 Nissan wants for its Murano CrossCab.
Continue reading Honda Accord Crosstour Cabriolet coming to take on Nissan's topless Murano

Honda Accord Crosstour Cabriolet coming to take on Nissan's topless Murano originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 11:30:00 EST.
When Honda originally launched the odd duck Accord Crosstour in late 2009, we were told that the only available powertrain would be a V6, but that plans for a four-cylinder hadn't been completely ruled out. Now, Honda fansite Temple of VTEC reports that a memo sent to dealerships states that a four-cylinder Crosstour is on the way, arriving at some point later this year.

Details about the four-cylinder Crosstour were not divulged, but we would assume that it's the same 2.4-liter engine currently found in the Accord sedan. Temple of VTEC reports that a larger four-cylinder unit for the CR-V crossover is currently in the works, so we won't rule out the possibility of that new mill finding its way under the Crosstour's hood, as well. Expect the four-cylinder engine to only be available on lower-trim Crosstours, likely without an all-wheel drive option.

Honda has hit rough water with sales of its new CR-Z, Accord Crosstour and Insight models According to Automotive News, the three models are underperforming in a big way.

Take the Insight hybrid, which is falling 40,000 units short of even the most conservative estimates inside the company. Outsold 8-to-1 by its Toyota Prius rival, Honda has only managed to shift 19,325 units through November - the company originally targeted sales of 60,000 to 80,000.

Likewise, thus far this year, Honda has sold nearly 20,000 fewer Crosstour models than its biggest competitor - the Toyota Venza, selling just 25,927 units compared to the Toyota's 43,325. Need we remind you, Honda's original sales goal for the Crosstour was 40,000 units per year, a number we were deeply skeptical of after first driving the vehicle at its launch last November.

Although it hasn't been on the market that long, early sales for Honda's new CR-Z hybrid coupe aren't any more encouraging. Automotive News reports that Honda had conservatively intended to sell around 15,000 of the two-seat hybrids per year, but so far, only 4,373 have made their way off of dealer lots and another 3,000 are currently sitting in inventory. Thankfully, there is one bright spot in the Honda stable - the 2011 Odyssey. The minivan bowed in September, and it's performing well against a minivan segment that has heated up with a range of new competitors.

Automotive News suggests that the problem boils down to a change in Honda's image from a company with compelling products to one that plays it safe. Throw in styling that isn't for everyone and aging (but still selling) models like the CR-V and Accord, and you've got a recipe for decreased market share.

Honda, meanwhile, says that it doesn't focus on market share because that leads to bad habits (read: incentives), instead opting to focus on percentage-increases in vehicles sold. That's a fair strategy, but slow sales of key new models suggest that Honda needs to do some soul-searching. Might we suggest getting back to its roots as an engineering-driven car company?

We're still not very fond of the Honda Accord Crosstour's styling, but we'll be honest - this SEMA-spec HFP concept is pretty darn cool. Riding on 19-inch PDS-10 wheels wrapped in Yokohama ADVAN ST 245/50-series tires, this Crosstour benefits from a lowered sport suspension encompassing new shocks and struts at all four corners, performance front springs and a unique body kit.

Honda says that this modified Crosstour is only a concept, but we won't be shocked to see some of these factory performance parts show up on the crossover's spec sheet in the not-too-distant future. After all, if you're going to drive something as... unique as the Crosstour, why not give it an added dose of individuality? Check it out in our gallery of high-res shots below.

In the state of Ohio auto manufacturing and Honda go hand in hand. The Japanese automaker's two assembly plants have combined to produce over 14 million autos since 1982, and the company's East Liberty facility just passed another milestone with auto number four million. The milestone vehicle produced was a CR-V, which is joined on the production line by the Accord Crosstour and the Element.

Honda managed to build four million vehicles at East Liberty in over 20 years through flexible manufacturing. The Honda facility has build many vehicles during its time, including the Accord, Civic and Acura CL. The plant has also ramped up production in 2010, with over 200,000 vehicles assembled to date, besting 2009 production, and has the capacity to build over 240,000 vehicles per year. Hit the jump to read Honda's press release.

Honda is set to launch a recall of certain 2010 Accord Crosstour models to "inspect and potentially replace the front passenger airbag." According to Honda, the recall will cover about 3,340 units in total, some 700 of those in Canada.

The cause for the recall stems from recent testing which revealed a potential problem with the airbag modules not meeting the rules regarding protection of an unbelted, child test dummies in the front seats. They say no incidents have been reported, but Honda is recommending that children under the age of 12 be properly restrained in the vehicle's rear seat for now.

Honda will notify affected customers by mail but owners can also call their dealer or Customer Relations toll-free at 1-888-946-6329.
