IIHS says these are the safest cars of 2013

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has revealed its annual list of Top Safety Picks, an award that highlights automobiles it says offer "superior crash protection." A new and still more significant award, the Top Safety Pick+ honor, is given to those vehicles that earn good ratings for occupant protection in four out of five areas of measure. And while some 117 vehicles were given the TSP seal of approval for 2013, just 13 passed muster for TSP+.

To be fair, IIHS only evaluated 29 vehicles with its new testing procedures for TSP+ (we'd expect that the number of qualified cars will rise substantially for 2014). Luxury and Near Luxury midsize cars were the first groups evaluated, followed by midsizers in the Moderately Priced Cars category - unsurprisingly, it's only midsize cars that you'll find among the class this year.

Only two luxury sedans made the list of 13 for 2013: the Acura TL and Volvo S60. The other 11 cars on the list included entries from domestic, Japanese and German car makers: Dodge Avenger, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord (sedan and coupe), Kia Optima (but not its close kin, the Hyundai Sonata, strangely), Nissan Altima, Subaru Legacy and Outback, Suzuki Kizashi and the Volkswagen Passat all made the grade.

2013 Honda Accord Coupe V6 6MT

One of the first cars I reviewed for Autoblog was - say it with me now - a 2010 Honda Accord Coupe EX-L V6 w/Navi 6MT, perhaps the rarest of all modern Accord models. I mean, think about it: Of all the different Accord variants on the road, how many are coupes? And how many of those have the larger V6 engine? And how many of those are fully loaded with leather, navigation and all the trimmings? And finally, how many of those have option sheets where the only box that isn't checked is the automatic transmission?

That has to be something like one percent of one percent, right?

So when Honda started rolling its all-new 2013 Accord into the test fleet, I was happy to hear that yet another Coupe EX-L V6 w/Navi 6MT model was available out of the Detroit pool. And while this really isn't the car that serves as the control for judging the entire Accord line, it's still one heck of a sweetheart.

It's the Journalist Special all over again.

Driving Notes

This thing is quick. Honda's revised Earth Dreams 3.5-liter V6 produces 278 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque in this application, and that's plenty in a car that weighs in at just 3,400 pounds. Honda does not release performance data, but instrumented buff-book testing has revealed 0-60 times as low as 5.6 seconds. For reference, that's three-tenths of a second quicker than the bonkers Ford Focus ST.
Straight-line acceleration isn't the only bit of behind-the-wheel joy here. The steering is nicely weighted with plenty of feedback, the chassis is well-tuned to handle the V6 grunt (though you can get the front wheels to spin on hard launches), and the whole package feels tossable and nimble. As Executive Editor Chris Paukert said to me, it's sort of like a lux'd-out latter-day Honda Prelude. Or to my mind, a more civilized, grown-up version of the current Civic Si.
Accord V6 sedans aren't available with the six-speed manual transmission found here in the coupe, and for those who do opt for it, they're in for a treat. Quick shifts are easy to knock off thanks to pleasantly short throws and well-placed pedals with a nicely weighted clutch.
I've really warmed to the Accord's new styling... mostly. The front fascia with its LED running lamps is an attractive, aggressive sight, and I like the profile stance with the handsome 18-inch alloy wheels of this test car, but I'm not too keen on those small faux air vents with reflector strips that are housed above the dual exhaust pipes. The chrome trim on the bottom of the rear bumper could certainly go away, too.
There's a lot to like inside the Accord, too. Everything in the cabin feels solid and well-built, and the overall design is fresh and modern. I don't quite get the whole dual-screen center console design, and I'm still not a big fan of Honda's new Lane Watch blind spot monitoring system. Yeah, it's cool, but it'd be even cooler if it showed the driver's side trouble spots. Even with the camera in place, I still find myself using the mirrors.
But here's the tough part: this whole package, as tested, is $33,140. It's a fantastic car, this Accord Coupe, and for the enthusiast who wants a sort of sporty, larger, surprisingly luxurious coupe, you could certainly do worse. That said, we imagine this build combination will account for maybe one percent of all Accord sales, and at the end of the day, it's a $33k Honda coupe. Fun and stylish, for sure, but a car that is seemingly destined to be more commonly spotted with manufacturer plates than hard tags.

2013 Honda Accord Coupe HFP hitting dealerships next spring

The totally new 2013 Honda Accord has just now started trickling into dealerships across the country, but here at SEMA, we're already getting our first look at what the future has in store for Honda's midsize offering. Arriving in Honda showrooms next spring is this limited-edition HFP performance edition of the 2013 Accord Coupe, and although no power upgrades are on tap, there's some extra kit that will indeed make things more interesting out on the road.

Honda's HFP upgrades start with visual add-ons like 19-inch alloy wheels and a rear decklid spoiler, and further changes are found underneath that sheetmetal with the addition of a unique sport suspension that lowers the car by 15 millimeters and enhances overall handling. Of course, no sporty Accord would be complete without the necessary body enhancements to the front fascia, side sills and rear bumper, and don't worry, there will be plenty of HFP badges on both the exterior and interior.

Speaking of interior, the Accord HFP will have red illumination found throughout the cabin as well as - wait for it - specially branded floor mats.

A Honda spokesperson confirmed to Autoblog that the HFP package will be available with both the four- and six-cylinder engine. We've already had a chance to drive a two-door Accord with the V6 engine, and it's seriously good. The HFP add-ons should make this a truly sweet package.

Only 500 of the Accord Coupe HFP models will be produced, and the whole package will be offered as a $4,650 option package, not including the cost of installation. Scroll down for the full details in Honda's press release.

2013 Honda Accord priced from $21,680*, rated at 27/36 MPG

For those in the market for a new family sedan (or coupe), Honda has announced pricing and detailed fuel economy numbers for the 2013 Accord range. Base MSRP for the 2013 Honda Accord LX sedan is set at $21,680, while the Coupe carries a base MSRP of $23,350 (*)not including $790 for destination. This represents a price increase of less than $300 for the sedan and $200 for the coupe versus the outgoing model.

Accord LX sedan models with Honda's new continuously variable transmission start at $22,480, the upmarket EX will set you back $24,605, and the Accord EX-L with navigation rings in at $29,995. These models are all equipped with a 2.4-liter inline-four making 185 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. Six-speed manual-equipped models achieve 24 miles per gallon city and 34 mpg highway while vehicles with the CVT put up 27/36 mpg city/highway.

Opting for a Sport model will get you a 189-horsepower version of that same inline-four, and doing so will set you back $23,390 for a six-speed manual model, which returns the same fuel economy numbers as the non-Sport 6MT models. A Sport model with a CVT achieves 26 city and 35 highway mpg with a base MSRP of $24,190.

Anyone seeking the 278-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 will have to shell out $30,070 for an EX-L V6 sedan, while a the range-topping Accord Touring V6 starts at $33,430. These models are equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and deliver 21/34 mpg city/highway.

The Accord Coupe EX-L V6 starts at $30,350, and can be had with a six-speed manual, which drops fuel economy to 18/28 mpg city/highway (six-speed automatic models achieve 21/32 mpg). No pricing or fuel economy numbers have been announced for the Accord Plug-In Hybrid.

The sedan will hit dealers on Wednesday, September 19, while the Coupe will arrive Monday, October 15. Click below to check out the press release for complete pricing and fuel economy information.

It's always a dangerous time when an automaker redesigns a top seller. Not only are there legions of past and current owners who expect to be impressed, there are also a whole slew of new buyers the automaker is looking to entice. With that in mind, we present the brand-new 2013 Honda Accord.

Yes, you've seen Honda's redesigned midsize standard bearer before, right on these pages. But have you seen every available trim level from every conceivable angle? No? Well then, allow us to share with you this bounteous cornucopia of image gallery goodness.

Honda releases first 2013 Accord Coupe pictures

Honda released a pair of images of its new-for-2013 Accord sedan early this morning, and it's followed them up with a pair of matching Coupe photos (we've added some cropped/zoomed images so you can see some of the details better).

The two-door bodystyle looks quite similar to the rakish outgoing model, with comparable greenhouse and prominent profile creases, but styling has been cleaned up as well, with better integrated hood shutlines and a dumping of the love/hate "upside-down" door handles that marked out the previous Accord. Unlike the new-for-2013 sedan, the Coupe also has unique squared-off lower fascias with recessed lighting - particularly noticeable in the rear.

Up front, a mesh grille with a thinner U-shaped surround insert takes the place of the sedan's more conservative slatted affair, and the headlamp fixtures are unique with larger amber turn signals. The lower air inlet looks similar in style to the sedan, but the surrounding fascia is different, incorporating round fog lamps in blacked-out faux mesh recesses.

The rear end also receives unique taillamps, and they appear smaller than their family-minded counterpart. Also unlike the sedan, they don't extend into the trunklid, which appears to have a markedly narrower opening to go with its built-in lip spoiler and CHMSL. The Accord Coupe's most prominent feature in the rear is arguably its square-jawed bumper cap, which has vertical rectangle reflectors and a horizontal sliver of brightwork that the sedan lacks. As with the saloon, twin exhaust outlets are shown on this V6 model, but they have unique oval-shaped finishers, where the sedan has more traditional round pieces.

Leaked order sheet reveals Sport trim, CVT for 2013 Accord

Honda is massaging the 2013 Accord line with more modern gearboxes and trims to match its more modern design (the non-conceptual version of which still has yet to be seen). In addition to the six-speed manual replacing the five-cogger currently offered on four-cylinder models, the folks at the Temple of VTEC forum have found an order sheet indicating a CVT will be available on mid-range LX, EX and EX-L models. For the enthusiasts hoping for the manual to return to the V6 sedan, no dice - the 6AT is what you'll get.

The sheet also omits the sedan's current SE trim slotted between the LX and EX, and in its stead is a Sport trim. It can be had with either the manual or the CVT, but it's not listed with the "navi" option. The coupe's trims remain the same. When we can put these specs together with the actual 2013 car, then we'll start to guess how it will far against its archfoe, the Toyotal Camry.

2013 Honda Accord Coupe Concept previews redesign, hybrid returning

In true Honda fashion, we're once again presented with a "concept" car that's only a set of wheels and a de-Bedazzling away from being production-ready. What you're looking at here is the concept that previews the next-generation Accord that will be dropping later this year, ready to compete with a full slate of redesigned mid-size sedans.

Honda has once again taken a conservative approach to design, and while it's certainly handsome (except for those gaudy air intakes that flank both sides of the front fascia), we can't help but think that it already looks one or two generations old. (2009 Kia Optima, anyone?) We'll have to wait until we see the car in its production spec before making final judgments, but with sexy new mid-size offerings like the 2013 Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima, the Accord doesn't look to be gunning for shoppers who want a whole lot of style with their substance.

Substance, though, it definitely has. The base engine is a new Earth Dreams 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder with direct injection, putting 181 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque to the ground via a continuously variable transmission. Honda will continue to offer a V6 in the Accord - a dying trend in this segment - measuring 3.5 liters, mated to either a manual or automatic transmission, both with six gears.

The Accord Hybrid will use an all-new two-motor plug-in hybrid system with three drive modes - all-electric, gasoline-electric and "direct-drive."

What's really interesting, though, is that the 2013 model marks the return of the Accord Hybrid - a vehicle that died after the 2007 model year. This time, however, the Accord will use an all-new two-motor plug-in hybrid system with three drive modes - all-electric, gasoline-electric and "direct-drive" - with a 6-kWh lithium-ion battery and a 120-kilowatt electric motor mated to a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle inline four-cylinder engine. Honda says that the Accord Plug-In will have a pure electric range of 10-15 miles with a top speed of 62 miles per hour, and that recharging the battery will take less than four hours with a 120-volt charger, or less than 1.5 hours with a 240-volt setup. Not bad, Honda.

Naturally, Honda will pack the 2013 Accord with all of its latest safety technologies, including lane departure warning, forward collision warning, blind-spot detection and a multi-angle rear-view camera. We expect to see the production car debut in the not-too-distant future (New York Auto Show, perhaps?) with the 2013 model officially hitting dealerships this fall. 2011 Honda Accord Coupe V6 Concept goes supercharged

Honda showed off a gaggle of wild concepts for SEMA 2011, but the most interesting of the bunch may very well be a demure 2011 Accord Coupe V6. The two-door has been worked over by the go-fast fiends at Honda Factory Performance and boasts a range of bolt-on goodies that include a HFP suspension and body kit. More importantly, the Accord Coupe V6 Concept is laden with a smattering of prototype engine components. Engineers crafted a prototype supercharger, intake and exhaust systems just for the vehicle, and the end result is a very respectable 335 horsepower 285 pound-feet of torque.

Those figures mark an increase of 64 ponies and 34 lb-ft of twist over the stock 3.5-liter V6, which should do plenty to make the Accord a more interesting piece of metal. Right now, Honda says that the concept was built purely to gauge public interest and determine whether or not Accord Coupe buyers would actually be interested in a hotter version of the vehicle. We say extra horsepower is always a good thing, especially when it comes with a factory warranty.

Honda has unveiled updates to its new Accord Coupe and Sedan for the 2011 model year. Chief among the changes are improvements to the car's aerodynamics, reduced engine friction and revised transmission gearing that all add up to increased fuel efficiency. According to the automaker, four-cylinder sedans equipped with an automatic transmission now achieve 23 miles per gallon in the city (a two mpg improvement) and 34 mpg on the highway (a three mpg improvement).

Styling updates are mostly limited to the front fascias, which now appear to be more in line with the blocky look of the Accord Crosstour... for better or for worse. Brake lights and bumpers also get slight revisions, and new wheels are optional on V6 models. The Coupe gets optional steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and a USB Audio Interface, while all models with navigation get a rear view camera system.

Sadly, most models are still equipped with five-speed transmissions, both automatic and manual - save for the EX-L V6 Coupe, which gets a six-speed stick. "It's the journalist special." That phrase, coined by our own senior editor, quite accurately sums up our initial impression of the Honda Accord Coupe EX-L V6 w/Navi 6MT (breathe). The Accord may be one of the best-selling cars in America, but we'll bet our bottom dollar that only a very, very small percent of the already meager coupe sales are made up of expensive EX-L Navi models fitted with the manual transmission. But give or take a few nitpicky options, this is the way we'd spec our own Accord Coupe if asked to.

Sure, it may seem that Honda outfitted this car just for us, but as we found out in our week-long test, there are plenty of reasons to like the two-door Accord. It's like vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup on top - the safe, reliable, trusty Accord underpinnings with an extra helping of sweet stuff. Honda knows it isn't going to move many two-doors equipped like this, but we think potential Accord Coupe buyers would be wise to check out the V6/manual package. Follow the jump to find out why.

Honda's Accord has grown at every redo since the model's inception, and this latest version is no different. We've already tried out the sedan, so we borrowed the two-door version to sample the Coupé lifestyle, wherein you actually pronounce those acute accents. Our first impression is that the Accord Coupe is the best Monte Carlo never made, while retaining a fundamental core of Hondaness. Accords have always been half cool, half dorky, with the scale tipping one way or another depending on the generation. This latest one continues that trend, and we wanted to find out if the 2008 Accord Coupe is crushingly cool or heavily noisome.

The second accessorized Accord from Honda is the Accord Coupe HFP Concept. This is the one that you can replicate with a careful parts checking in the Honda Factory Performance accessory catalog, not the HF-S as we previously reported. This red sample looked pretty good, but not nearly as racy as the HF-S. After the jump you'll find the limited press release and a photo of the placard that provides details about what specific mods this coupe is sporting that you can buy for your own coupe. As we pointed out earlier, the great thing about factory accessories is that if you have the dealer affix them to your car, they carry a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty.

SEMA 2007: Honda Accord Coupe HF-S Concept

Honda's Accord Coupe has barely hit the pavement and we're already seeing what the platform can host in terms of modifications. Today at SEMA Honda showed off a BMW M6-like Accord Coupe HF-S Concept that looks extremely hot (may be those lights) and features a retuned throttle, suspension and exhaust. You can see the full list of upgrades by viewing the placard, but it's basically a carbon fiber and body color aero kit that really makes the shape pop. This particular Accord Coupe was built by Honda Access America, Inc., Honda's U.S. accessory development team, so it is conceivable that you could replicate it for yourself. We would highly recommend it.

SEMA Preview: Honda debuting two tuned Accord Coupes

We're starting to get that overwound spring feeling in the pits of our stomachs as SEMA is roaring down upon us. Next week, the ginormous event for tuners and aftermarket manufacturers gets underway in Las Vegas, and Honda will be there with two Accord Coupes they spiced up in-house. The 2008 Accord is still wet behind the ears, and the two coupes are going to be rolling showcases for what treasures can be found in the accessories catalog. The Honda Factory Performance version of the coupe will be equipped with ownership and enjoyment-enhancing pieces that everyone can purchase and have installed at their dealer.

More exotic will be the HF-S concept (above), created by Honda's accessory development team. Our guess is that the HF-S will be more kitted-up and carrying stuff that's not yet available, but could be. The car definitely looks like it was ripped from Manga, and the great thing about factory accessories is that if you have the dealer affix them to your car, they carry a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. That's better than the nonexistent warranty you'll find on anything you bolt on yourself from the Mugen catalog.

During the night, Honda opened the flood gates and officially unveiled the 2008 Honda Accord, the eighth generation of the automaker's perennial best-seller. There's too much new stuff to talk about, so we'll hit the highlights here and you can check out Honda's exhaustive press release after the jump.

The Accord for 2008 is available as a sedan, which has grown large enough to be classified a large car by the EPA, or a coupe. There are three basic engines available, including a 3.5L iVTEC V6 producing 273 horsepower and 250 ft-lbs. of torque. Do the math and you'll realize the '08 Accord with this engine is the most powerful Honda ever produced. It also features a new Variable Cylinder Management system when ordered in the sedan that can power the vehicle on three, four or all six cylinders to achieve an excellent 19/29 mpg. The other two mills are a 2.4L inline-four producing 200 horsepower/170 ft-lbs., and another 2.4L producing 180 horsepower/166 ft-lbs. All models of the '08 Accord can be ordered with a five-speed automatic, while four-cylinder models can also be had with a 5-speed manual transmission, and the V6 Coupe can be optioned with a six-speed manual.

Honda Accord coupe caught "accessorized"

Looks like somebody has already gotten tired of the as-yet-unreleased '08 Accord Coupe's looks. Spotted over the weekend, here's a pic of the coupe sporting a mild HIN makeover, with a full body kit, sunroof deflector and rear wing too! While it doesn't look atrocious, it seems oh so unnecessary. It is presumed to be a fully optioned model that uses the complete dealer accessory option list, perhaps doing a photo shoot for their catalog. Whatever else it is, it's unique.

Spy Shots: Fully-undisguised 2008 Honda Accord

Jalopnik has scored some primo spy shots of the 2008 Honda Accord. Super-shutterbugs Brenda Priddy & Co. captured both the sedan and coupe out in the open as they were being prepared for a photo shoot. As you can see by looking at the coupe (click image at right for full views), it's basically a dead ringer for the concept car Honda trotted out in Detroit, only the production version's got a nicer-looking lower front fascia. Around back, the concept's through-the-bumper exhaust has been replaced by a conventional setup. The sedan also receives the new face and its profile is now graced with a BMW-esque kink in its C-pillar. Head to Jalopnik to see all the pics, then weigh in with your opinions.

Spied! 2008 Honda Accord Coupe

Honda appears to be actively road testing on the upcoming Accord Coupe, and as these spy shots snapped by a poster on the Howard Forums show, the production car is going to be a near dead-ringer for the "concept" Honda teased us with at the Detroit Auto Show this past January. Obvious changes include a real-world lower rear fascia that features a pair of chrome exhaust tips, and the 10-spoke wheels seen above. The show car sported a set of integrated quad outlets that were obviously never going to make the transition to production. The dual outlets look perfectly good here.

If you click through to the forum to see the rest of the photos (all high-res), you'll notice that the front end, though taped, also apes the concept car. We're guessing that there's more detail to the bottom half of the front fascia than the Detroit car had (it was quite boring, actually). It's covered up in the photos, leading us to believe Honda's keeping something about it a secret. In any case, we like what we see, and if these cars are out and about, we're sure the pro photogs will be on the case as well in short order. let's see some interior shots!

Toyota to Honda: You can have midsize coupe market. We out (sorta)

The market for midsize coupes has always been a volatile segment. In a culture obsessing with The New, the hairdressers of the world are likely to trade up their two-door barges for something of the SUV or crossover variety.

Toyota Motor Sales exec, Jim Lentz, recognizes this trend and feels that the automaker's development dollars could be put to better use. So in an interview with Ward's Auto, Lentz alluded to the fact that the Solara will likely be dropped from Toyota's lineup in the near future.

That said, Honda's unveiling of its Accord Coupe concept in Detroit counters that claim, accompanied by Honda's own data that maintains there will be a 34-percent growth in the segment within the next four years. What does Honda know that Toyota doesn't? That's something we doubt will keep Toyota execs up at night.
