Volkswagen has its XL1, the aero coupe that promises 235 miles per gallon through the use of a two-cylinder TDI diesel, an electric motor with a lithium-ion battery pack, and a seven-speed DCT. Rumored to hit showrooms next year, it will be sold in limited markets and in limited numbers. Over the corporate fence, Autocar reports that Audi is also working on a 1.0-liter car, but theirs looks to have a very different brief.

The report says that it's known as the "1.0-liter car" internally, but it won't use the same engine as Volkswagen's entry and the displacement codename might or might not describe the car's actual engine size. There will definitely be an electric component involved, however. The tiny bit that is known comes courtesy of Wolfgang Durheimer, Audi's technology chief, who says the car will utilize a version of the steel platform the A1 is based on. He tells Autocar that it will "be an 'affordable' full four-seater" and it will provide "all the creature comforts of a normal car, including climate control."

Instead of an Audi version of the XL1, this sounds like Ingolstadt's take on the BMW i3, but with better mileage. The Autocar piece says it's at least three years away from showrooms, but the Audi future product plan changes so frequently, so the timeline is hardly set in stone. The concepts, if and when they do arrive, should be very interesting, at least.
Audi plotting a 235-mpg, "affordable" four-seat city car originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 25 Nov 2012 15:35:00 EST.
The engineers at Audi look to be hard at work on a more potent version of the company's A1 hatchback. Spy photographers spotted this machine out on public streets for testing, and the presence of a set of quad exhaust out back leads us to believe this could be the rumored S1 model. It's unclear whether this machine will slot under the limited-edition 256-horsepower A1 Quattro or be sold as a less extreme version of the hottest of Audi hatches when that car's production slots fill up. Photographers report this is a gasoline-powered model, which means the company's 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine is likely kicking behind the headlights.

If that's true, we can expect between 220 and 250 horsepower shuttled to all four wheels via the German automaker's Quattro all-wheel drive system. If you were wondering why Audi didn't use the S1 name for the A1 Quattro, you may very well be looking at the reason.
Are you the Audi S1? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 14:15:00 EST.
Audi is launching a German-market special edition of its tiny A1 and A1 Sportback. Called A1 Amplified, the special models are available now in either Misano Red or Glacier White paint and include some special trim and other upgraded options.

The Amplified A1 is based on Audi's A1 Ambition trim line, but tacks on an extra $2,500 to cover its unique equipment. With glossy black-finish roof arches, mirrors, grille and S Line spoiler, the look is more aggressive than the suspiciously cute standard A1. Black 17-inch alloy wheels and a matte-finish stripe complete the transformation. On the interior, upgrades include sport seats and body color air vents, as well as a unique set of floor mats.

As if that's not enough, buyers can opt for two further levels of amplification. For just over $5,000, you can get an Amplified Plus A1, which also includes a black headliner, LED interior lights, a color-coordinated key, and more body color interior trim. Stainless pedals and a full exterior body kit with LED taillights add to the sportiness quotient, along with a gloss black rear diffuser and dual exhaust for A1 models fitted with engines over 103 horsepower.

There's also a third Amplified package, reserved for A1s with over 120-horsepower engines. This one adds S Line sport package interior, including leather seats with contrasting stitching, body color setback shells, and bright floor mats. Rear glass is tinted and the body kit and roof wing are done up in gloss black. With 18-inch wheels and Xenon headlights, this is one truly loaded A1, which carries an $8,800 premium.

The Audi Q2 may soon be the smallest member of Audi's Q family, and a report in Autocar indicates that the company is taking no risks with its feature set. Charged with taking on the Mini Countryman and Nisssan Juke, Audi is giving the Q2 the kinds of looks and options it believes will stand up to established and popular competition.

Looks-wise that means a design said to grab elements from both the Quattro concept of 2010 and the Volkswagen Cross Coupe concept shown at last year's Tokyo Motor Show, sized between the A1 and A3 in length and about as wide as the Q3. We earlier mentioned two four-cylinder engines in the offing, but speculation is that there will actually be five - two gasoline and three diesel - ranging from a 120-horsepower 1.4-liter petrol engine to a 180-hp 2.0-liter diesel engine. A range-topping option will be the S model with a 225-hp version of the 2.0-liter gasoline unit. Buyers will apparently have the choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG transmission, and front- or all-wheel drive.

The "high-quality interior" and exterior are said to get Mini-esque personalization options, and green features like stop/start will keep it frugal. Final bodystyles are still being decided, but we'll see a two-door concept at the Paris Motor Show later this year, with the final version penciled in for the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Audi Q2 concept headed for Paris, production model not until 2015 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 Jun 2012 10:00:00 EST.
German magazine Sport Auto got its mitts on an Audi A1 Quattro, then tested the limited-edition hot hatch for high speed and gravel prowess. With 252 horsepower and 258 pound-feet underhood from its 2.0 TSFI engine, it's slightly down on gumption from the 500-horsepower A1 Clubsport that Audi showed off at the Wörthersee and Le Mans last year, but the bewinged A1 Quattro will still get from standstill to 62 mph in 5.7 seven seconds and onto a GPS-indicated 257 kph (159 mph).

The A1 Quattro is a little longer than the traditional A1 and it will come packed with enhanced trim, a 456-watt stereo and metallic-white paint, but we're still awaiting the small detail of pricing. Only 333 examples are to be produced, and you can see one of them in the video below.
Continue reading Watch Audi's A1 Quattro get thrashed on gravel roads

Watch Audi's A1 Quattro get thrashed on gravel roads originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 06 Jun 2012 16:57:00 EST. But now, according to Auto Express, Audi is working on an entry-level Q2 crossover that would take on the likes of the Nissan Juke and Mini Countryman.

Auto Express has come up with a rendering of the Q2 (pictured right, click to see the full deal), which we'll reportedly see in concept form sometime in the next 12 months, and - surprise, surprise - it looks like a sportier Q3 or, more to the point, a high-riding A1. Because of its small size, powertrains will likely be plucked out of the A1 range, meaning a 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four and a 1.6-liter diesel four will be offered.

Audi will also reportedly take a cue from Mini with the Q2 launch, encouraging owners to personalize their small CUVs in a number of ways. According to the report, buyers will be able to opt for contrasting roof and mirror colors, as well as different-colored major interior trim bits, including the seats and steering wheel.

The Q2 will ride on the same MQB architecture that is set to underpin the full range of Volkswagen Group small cars. That said, Auto Express reports that the Q2 will launch before the rest of the small cars are facelifted in 2014.
Audi Q2 to take on Nissan Juke? originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 04 May 2012 16:29:00 EST.
Audi is going to great lengths to steal territory away from arch-rival BMW and its Mini marque. But as you'd expect from any German automaker, the initial A1 three-door premium hatchback appears to be just the beginning. Since its launch, the A1 has bred the five-door A1 Sportback, there's a Q1 crossover based on the same platform reportedly in the works, and the A1 Quattro demonstrates the extent of the architecture's performance capabilities. But Ingolstadt is not about to stop there as reports come in of a convertible version as well.

Well, sort of. According to reports coming in from Germany, Audi is preparing to launch a version of the A1 with a rolling cloth roof panel. If the intel proves accurate, the open-air version would stop one step short of the pseudo-convertible Fiat 500C, in that the aperture would essentially be a giant fabric sunroof, but not roll down the back.

The measure would undoubtedly save Audi significant development costs, but also keep chassis rigidity in check without the need for significant additional structural bracing. Either way, we're not looking at getting any version of the A1 on this side of the Atlantic any time soon, so as far as American buyers are concerned, this is all rather academic.
Audi to raise the roof on A1 with rolling cloth panel? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 07:57:00 EST. Perhaps...

It is perhaps with all the speed of a mighty iceberg, but increasingly, more and more North American buyers appear willing to think smaller when pondering their next auto purchase. The other shoe, which still has largely yet to drop, is for automakers to convince consumers of the merits of a luxury subcompact, paying a price premium for a longer list of creature comforts, options and badge appeal. However small, this trend in the States is best represented by BMW and its Mini range, followed (with a few stumbles out of the gate) by the Fiat 500.

In Europe, however, there is already a well-defined tradition of premium minicars on which buyers happily lavish extra dollars, and there is no model quite so indulgent for the masses as the Audi A1. Through its first complete year of sales in 2011, the Bavarians built at their factory in Brussels, Belgium - and sold - nearly 120,000 A1 three-doors.

Now we've finally gotten the chance to drive an Audi A1 Sportback with five doors, a model first shown publicly at last October's Tokyo Motor Show. The five-door model carries on with the basic A1 recipe of offering big things in small packages, and rather unusually, we think the model with more doors might actually look better this time. That may not seem altogether based on reason at first glance, since both the three- and five-door A1 designs have a length of 155.7 inches and a wheelbase of 97.2 inches. (Only the Fiat 500, Jeep Wrangler, Scion iQ, Smart ForTwo and various two-door Mini models take up less parking space.)

2012 Audi A1 Sportback [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 25 Jan 2012 11:57:00 EST.
Christmas just came a few days early for Audi fans with the announcement of the A1 Quattro, a high-performance, limited-edition version of Audi's subcompact hatch.

As its name would imply, the A1 Quattro comes equipped with the automaker's legendary all-wheel-drive system, with power provided by the same 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder used in the S3. The reworked mill puts out 252 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 258 pound-feet of torque from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm - a boost of more than 70 hp and 74 lb-ft over the standard 1.4-liter A1.

A six-speed manual shuttles that power to a Haldex AWD setup and on to center-locking 17-inch wheels that ape the original 80s-era Quattro's style. There's no word on weight, but Audi claims the hi-po A1 will match the S3's 0-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds and top out at 152 mph.

In addition to grippy 225/35 R18 rubber, the wheel wells are filled with a modified MacPherson strut suspension in front and a multi-link setup out back, while the braking hardware has been upgraded with larger discs at all four corners with black painted calipers. The electromechanical steering has also been tweaked to provide a 14.8:1 ratio, the ESP has been modified for high-performance duty and a new electronically controlled differential lock will keep wheelspin at bay. Although Audi decided to keep the rear seats in place, the AWD components have reduced trunk space to 7.4 cubic feet - or 2.1 cubes less than the standard model. Not that you care.

The exterior speaks for itself, drawing cues from past Audi concepts and a few bits from the S and RS lines, while the interior receives a new instrument panel, aluminum pedals, seriously bolstered buckets and black leather with red contrast stitching.

The A1 Quattro is an S1 in everything but name, and it's set to go on sale later next year with only 333 units on offer. And naturally, the U.S. is left out. We're as irritated as you. Get even more disappointed by reading all the details in the press blast below the fold.
Continue reading Audi creates limited edition, 252-hp A1 Quattro

Audi creates limited edition, 252-hp A1 Quattro originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Dec 2011 18:28:00 EST. The German automaker has already said that the larger hatchback will be available with the same six engine options as its three-door sibling. That means buyers will be able to lay their hands on an A1 Sportback Five Door with a 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder good for 185 horsepower. There are also three diesel engine options available for those who require a little extra fuel economy.

The base model will land with an MSRP just shy of €17,000 in Europe, or $27,000 USD based on current exchange rates.

While we're plenty partial to the orange A1 in the lead gallery above, Audi also showed off a unique Samurai Blue version of the vehicle that could only exist in Japan. Here's hoping you like bizarre wheel color options.
Audi hatches family-minded A1 Sportback originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 Nov 2011 16:00:00 EST.
The A1 has grown another two doors. Audi has just unveiled a new five-door version of the hatchback designed to give European buyers a little more flexibility when it comes to moving people and cargo. Like its thee-door counterpart, the new model will be available with a total of six engine options, including three gasoline mills and three diesel lumps when it arrives in show rooms early next year. The most powerful of those engines is a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder good for 185 horsepower, and buyers willing to lay down the cash can opt for the company's six-speed S Tronic transmission.

Inside, the vehicle's luggage compartment serves up around 9.5 cubic feet of cargo area, though than number swells to over 32 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. Audi says that the back head rests don't need to be removed in order to stash the back bench, and the A1 Sportback features a loading deck that's just a little over 25 inches off of the ground. Follow the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Audi reveals A1 Sportback five-door

Audi reveals A1 Sportback five-door originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 Nov 2011 13:31:00 EST.
When you seen an Audi prototype with enormous lower air intakes up front, it can only mean one thing: an RS model cometh. Earlier reports stated that Audi might skip the S1 and go right for the hardcore RS1 you see here, and while we've seen spy shots of what appeared to be an S1, the fact that we haven't heard anything since could mean that this RS model will be what launches first.

Fine by us, even though we American's can't drive the hot little Audi.

We could speculate all day about the RS1 getting the same 350-horsepower 2.5-liter turbo-five as the RS3, but the truth is, it'll probably use a turbocharged four-cylinder powerplant producing around 250 horsepower. That's still a potent punch in a car as small as the A1, and with Quattro all-wheel drive on hand, we imagine it'll be one heck of a good steer.
Hotter Audi RS1 caught testing originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 14:29:00 EST.
When the Audi A1 first came out around this time last year, Senner Tuning was among the first to take a crack at it. That was with the 1.6-liter TDI model, but now the German tuning house has come back with a more comprehensive modification of the A1 with Audi's 1.4 TFSI.

By tweaking the fuel system, air box and exhaust, Senner has boosted output from 120 horsepower up to 165 - not quite the 185-hp output of the pseudo-S1 model (nevermind the 500hp Clubsport show car), but considerably more than anything else in the A1 catalog.

The package is rounded out with white 19-inch alloys coated in low-profile rubber, riding on an adjustable suspension setup. The brown metallic paint job is offset by the white trim on the roof pillars and door mirrors as well, with a full aero kit for a more aggressive look. The interior has also been decked-out with a range of electronic gizmos, a multi-function steering wheel and two-tone black and beige leather upholstery.

All in all, the modifications come to around 10,000 euros (about $14,200 USD), or 36,590 euros including the car (that's nearly $52k). If you act fast, Senner will sell you (and by you, we mean the European version of you) the example you see here with just 50 km (30 miles) on the odometer for 29,900 euros, or around $42,400. Such a deal. Check out the high-resolution images in our gallery and the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Senner Tuning revisits the Audi A1

Senner Tuning revisits the Audi A1 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 17 Jun 2011 10:02:00 EST.
Audi has a huge presence at this weekend's 24 Hours of Le Mans. In addition to running a trio of R18s in the race, the Four Rings takes over a large portion of the track with displays, hospitality suites and even a temporary hotel that is built for the event each year.

One of the vehicles on display was the A1 clubsport quattro that debuted last week at Wörthersee, a celebration of all things Volkswagen. The show car is a clue that Audi's quattro system will soon make its way into the A1 lineup, although the demonstration is more extreme than anything that will make it to production.

Under the hood is a 500-horsepower version of the 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine, allowing the A1 clubsport quattro to go from 0-100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in just 3.7 seconds. The car also features a beautiful matte white paint job, a widebody aerodynamics kit, carbon fiber roof and rear spoiler, retro 19-inch wheels and more.

You can see our live photos of the Audi A1 clubsport quattro in the included high-res gallery, and check back in the next few days for more coverage of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Audi shows off A1 clubsport quattro at Le Mans originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 10 Jun 2011 18:50:00 EST.
Audi and all-wheel drive go together like mothers and apple pie. The German automaker has cultivated its Quattro systems as emblematic of its raison d'etre, incorporating it into its rapidly expanding range... with one exception: the A1. But that's about to change.

After launching the diminutive hatchback in front-wheel-drive only, Audi is working on extending the traction to the rear wheels as well. And to give us an idea of what to expect, the company has launched the A1 Clubsport Quattro concept among the 18 vehicles on display at its annual celebration in Wörthersee.

The little beast is built around an extensively tuned 2.5-liter turbo five with just under 500 horsepower. Optimized by direct injection and channeled to all four wheels through a six-speed manual, Audi claims the concept can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in a scant 3.7 seconds, doubling that speed in 10.9 en route to an electronically limited, Autobahn-crunching top end of 250 km/h (155 mph).

The package is rounded out by an aggressive wide-body aerodynamic kit, decked out in matte white paint with a carbon-fiber roof, with a side-exit exhaust and 19-inch alloys. While the production A1 Quattro and the S1 or RS1 to follow isn't likely to pack the 500 horses of the show car, gamers can check it out in Need for Speed World for a limited time.

Audi has also released a series of visual mods - including decals and aero kits - for the existing A1 at the show. Want to read more? We've got the full press blast after the jump along, with an extensive batch of images in our high-resolution gallery.
Continue reading Audi unveils 500hp A1 Clubsport Quattro show car at Wörthersee

Audi unveils 500hp A1 Clubsport Quattro show car at Wörthersee originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 May 2011 08:56:00 EST. Spy Shots: Audi S1 - Click above for high-res image gallery

Spy photographers have been training their lenses on upcoming Audi models as of late. Earlier, we got a look at the R8 GT Spyder, and now those cameras have captured the S1 hot hatch. Though it may look like a standard Audi A1, this mule is covering up S1 guts. What's the give-away? A set of large exhaust pipes planted in the rear end.

Rumor has it that the mill powering this sporty hatchback will pump out 270 horsepower. That energy will be sent out to all four corners courtesy of the Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Expect to see more aggressive bits of body work on the real S1 when it finally shows its face.
Audi S1 caught testing, likes wearing A1 clothing originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 May 2011 16:30:00 EST. Audi A1 commercial is big, yet small - Click above to watch the video after the break

The Audi A1 may be small, but the latest home-market spot for the supermini highlights the car's features in a big way. How big? How about a towering wall of guitar amplifiers that's really an enormous Bose speaker like those you'll find inside the A1? Or a movie screen that's actually the Navigation System display.

We have no explanation why you'd want to jacklight rabbits, as depicted in the commercial, but the A1's HID headlamp clusters carry out the task. Like those rabbits, Audi's going to need to proliferate its vehicles worldwide if it wants to meet its goal of becoming the largest luxury automaker in the world, and the A1 is one of those bunnies.

Whatever the case, you'll definitely want to see it for yourself in the video pasted after the break.
Continue reading Audi A1 commercial highlights big pieces of a small car

Audi A1 commercial highlights big pieces of a small car originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 May 2011 20:24:00 EST.
While some automakers - American ones especially - may be consolidating their product line-ups around the world, German automakers seem to be in a constant state of expansion. Audi is no exception, with no fewer, according to Automotive News Europe, than 37 model variants, set to further expand to 42 by 2015. That reportedly won't, however, include a version of the Volkswagen Up! city car program.

Audi CEO Rupert Stadler was quoted as saying he simply could not picture slotting another small car into the line-up underneath the new A1. The marque could, however, go ahead with plans for a compact SUV to fit in beneath the Q3. The vehicle likely to be called Q1 is apparently under consideration.

As for the A1, Audi still does not plan to bring the premium hatchback to the U.S. market, preferring instead to focus on its current line-up while the Brussels plant tasked with assembling the A1 struggles to keep up with demand. Expanding production, as we recently reported with GM's plans for the Chevrolet Volt, will largely depend on the production capacities of the independent suppliers making the components.
The diminutive Audi A1 hatchback has had to watch as it's older siblings enjoyed all-weather fun thanks to their quattro all-wheel drive system. Now the previously front-drive-only three-door is set to join in on that fun. Audi wants to make sure every model is offered with the quattro system and testing has begun on a quattro-equipped A1.

The Audi A1 quattro is packed with technology akin to its TT and A3 siblings. An electronically-controlled, hydraulically-actuated clutch sits in front of the rear axle. This unit sends most of the power to the front wheels but can transfer torque to the rear should the front lose traction. get all the details in the press blast after the jump.
All is apparently well in the house of Volkswagen. According to Automotive News, Audi has come out and refuted reports that the German automaker is butting heads with its parent company. Rumors had cropped up that the two had been locking horns over the creation of the Audi A1 E-tron. Word had it that VW was riled that Audi wanted to craft a range-extended EV with a gasoline rotary engine instead of following the EV plans of the rest of the VW family. Reports had said that Audi wanted a vehicle that would be an alternative to the BMW Mega City car.

Volkswagen wants all of the brands under its watch to use similar platforms for their respective electric vehicle efforts, or at least that's what The Financial Times Deutschland reported earlier this week. Automotive News, however has reported that Audi says there's no conflict between the two companies. Volkswagen, meanwhile, was apparently unavailable for comment the story.
