In addition to U.S. premieres for its new Mazdaspeed3 and reworked CX-7, Mazda will have a global debut in the form of a "heavily revised" CX-9 at next month's New York Auto Show.

For 2010, the three-row crossover will receive a riff on the controversial "smiley face" front graphic that has already been shown for 2010 on the Mazda3, MX-5 Miata, and CX-7. Judging by the supplied image, changes include a new front fascia integrating the aforementioned five-point grille, along with different lighting units and exterior mirrors. In addition to the exterior fettling, Mazda is promising new options and safety features, along with improved driving dynamics (already a CX-9 strong suit).

We'll likely have to wait until press days to learn further specifics, but for now, check out Mazda's official NY preview press release after the jump.
All Smiles: Updated 2010 Mazda CX-9 headed for New York originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Mar 2009 11:28:00 EST. Beginning last month and continuing through October, the automaker is launching a new magazine directed at Mazda owners, their vehicles and the "active-lifestyle" its marketers hope they are.

Eight different versions will be available worldwide, each individually tailored to their respective market. The inaugural issue will celebrate 40 years of rotating rotary goodness, and the U.S. print mag will get an inside look at Mazda's motorsports efforts at the Laguna Seca raceway.

Subaru has had a similar pub for its performance-minded customers for some time, which has proven to be an enjoyable read while hanging out in the "office." Plus, with an automaker-published piece, you don't have to read between the lines (and the adverts) to see who's stroking whom.

Mazda's press release is posted after the jump.

[Source: Mazda]
Continue reading Zoom-Zoom magazine brings Mazda's mission to print

Zoom-Zoom magazine brings Mazda's mission to print originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 18 Oct 2007 09:04:00 EST. Mazda helped explain the decision by saying that minivan marketing practices put too much downward pressure on prices and therefore limit profits for automakers. We think Mazda could reverse that trend by doing what we called for years ago: adding some "Zoom-Zoom" to the segment with a better handling, lighter-on-its-feet shuttle like the new MPV. Mazda has instead decided to focus on crossovers, much like every other manufacturer with the exception of Chrysler. Apparently SUV/CUV buyers will still accept the premium pricing that nets higher profitability for the automakers. There may be a fly in that ointment, however.

Story continues after the jump.

[Source: Automotive News, sub req]
Continue reading Mazda dealers: CX-9 sales don't need Zoom-Zoom push

Mazda dealers: CX-9 sales don't need Zoom-Zoom push originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Feb 2007 15:32:00 EST. But as with the still shot sweeps, this one is for Europe only. Mazda Motor Europe has launched a video contest to mark the launch of the new Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe, which should be hitting European dealerships soon. Signifying the 12 seconds it takes to open or close the new retractable hardtop, the promotion has been dubbed, "12 second thriller." It even has its own website at www.12secondthriller.com. The site features the new MX-5 and its power retractable hard top as main characters in several video homages to classic thrillers.

Visitors to the site can create their own mini thrillers starring the Roadster Coupe by clicking on the website's Create Your Own link. But that's only part of the fun to be had. The website is also ground zero for the film contest which can win you your very own Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe. All of the details are on the site, but basically submissions should show a short clip of up to 20 seconds showing your own thrilling moment on video. They want vignettes that are "fun, unexpected or unusual in a cheeky, Zoom-Zoom way." Whatever that means. But with a new car as a prize, we hope you will take the time to figure it out.

The contest closes on 31st January 2007, when the jury will select ten finalists. Nine of them will walk away with a BOSE SoundDock[TM] Digital Music System complete with an iPod nano. The Grand Prize winner will drive away with a Roadster Coupe presented to them at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show on 8th March. So fire up the camcorder and get Zooming.

[Source: Mazda]
Mazda offering MX-5 Roadster Coupe to budding filmmaker originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 28 Nov 2006 18:37:00 EST. Every conceivable RX vehicle and rotary powered conversion showed up at the 9th annual SevenStock event. According to the organizers, SevenStock is the largest single day Rotary enthusiast gathering in the world. And it would be very hard to argue with them on that. Some 500 RXes had already turned up this morning by the time we had to leave. Last year's crowd was estimated at 5,000, and it wouldn't be too much of a leap to say that this year looked to be at least that big.

Resembling a typical meet with lots of vendors and special displays, the SevenStock event adds a unique twist for Mazda lovers. Showing how dedicated it is to its zoom-zooming enthusiast owners, Mazda not only invited the group onto its campus, but they also brought out examples of their most historical production models and some of their most significant rotary-powered racecars as well.

More info and photos after the jump.
Continue reading SevenStock9 event unites RotorHeads from all over North America

SevenStock9 event unites RotorHeads from all over North America originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 29 Oct 2006 20:17:00 EST. Mazda's senior managing executive in charge of research and development, Seita Kanai, stated that the Japanese company is working independently of Ford to create hybrid vehicles. These new hybrids will be targeted at the U.S. market and will be based on a chassis that is lightened to compensate for the increased weight of the hybrid components. In the past, Mazda's hybrids have only been seen in concept form, and the Tribute Hybrid that Mazda provided to the Orange County Fire Authority was based on Ford's Aisin supplied system. Kanai also stated that with hybrids becoming more prevalent, "the challenge will be the appeal of the car itself." He went on to say that Mazda's goal is to take it's Zoom-Zoom mantra into the hybrid arena as well, with the fun-to-drive flavor intact. We say go for it, Kanai.

Mazda has stated in the past that it will release hydrogen-powered hybrid vehicles in 2008 using its rotary engine technology. It is far more likely that Mazda will release conventional gasoline-electric hybrids first, and then go for the more advanced hydrogen technology later. Still, 2008 is not that far off, and it will be interesting to see if the automaker can pull off this aggressive development timeline. It may also be possible for the technology that Mazda develops to be commercialized in Ford product as well, and with FoMoCo in upheaval right now, it is the perfect time for the Japanese company to take hybrid technology into its own hands.

[Source: Nikkei Business]
Mazda to go it alone with hybrid development originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Oct 2006 13:28:00 EST.
