So, you think the new Forza 3 is pretty awesome, huh? Well that's because it is. But it's about to get a little bit awesome-er thanks to the combined miracles of the holiday season and the internet.

That's right, the internet is the modern equivalent of Santa Clause - just as tangible and bearing more gifts - and here's what it's got in store for us this year: the Hot Holidays DLC Car Pack from Turn 10 Studios, the game company behind the Forza Motorsport franchise.

The package includes ten new cars, and Turn 10's already confirmed eight of them (one for each night of Hanukah, if you ask those dreidel-spinning journalists among us): the 2010 Audi S4, Nissan GT-R SpecV, Ferrari 599XX, Ferrari 458 Italia, Mercedes SLR McLaren Stirling Moss, Lamborghini Murcielago MP670-4 SuperVeloce, Jaguar XFR and Porsche Panamera Turbo, plus two of the most devastating Le Mans prototypes - the #2 Audi R15 TDI and #007 Aston Martin Lola. (All links go to gallery of screen shots.)

The car pack is downloadable as of today (December 8) for 400 Microsoft Points directly on XBox Live, a magical place (headquartered at the North Pole, we gather) where no one gives a hoot if you've been naughty or nice. Check out the video after the jump and the screen shots in the gallery below, then try to figure out which car you're most stoked about taking for a virtual test drive.

Whatever kind of cars you're into, Forza 3 looks like it'll have you covered. The XBox 360 driving game from Turn 10 Studios is quickly emerging to be the best simulator yet, packed with four hundred cars from fifty automakers on a hundred different tracks.

We've recently brought you screen shots and gameplay video footage of some of the most tantalizing machinery under the sun on Forza's virtual circuits - from American muscle cars and sport-utes to Bugattis and Japanese Super GTs - and now Turn 10 has announced a partnership with race organizers Down Under to include Australian V8 Supercars into the game as well. The additional car selection boils down to Holden Commodore VEs and Ford Falcons in a variety of actual liveries, so if you can't make it half way around the world to see the Aussie touring cars go wheel to wheel, you'll soon be able to drive them (virtually) at home. Check out the fresh batch of screen shots in the gallery below.

Gallery: Forza 3 Australian V8 Supercars screen shots

[Source: Forzacentral]

They Come From a Land Down Under: Australian V8 Supercars join in on the Forza 3 action originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 Sep 2009 19:00:00 EST.
Getting tired of driving over the same virtual circuits over and over again? Sure, it's a good way to get to know a track, but if can get tiresome. That's why Codemasters - the game studio behind DiRT, Grid and the upcoming F1 series - is releasing Fuel.

The arcade-style racing game boasts a Guinness World Record for the most virtual terrain in any video game: a whopping 5,560 square miles of drivable turf. To design the digital turf layout, developers took the entire Western United States and put the best into the game, encompassing everything from city streets and desert highways to switchback country roads and snowy mountain passes, in all manner of weather conditions.

The paddock of vehicles includes motorbikes, race cars and trucks, but they're all fictitious, so if you're looking for a realistic racing simulator, look elsewhere. If, on the other hand, you're looking for an old-school arcade game with a virtually endless array of tracks, this game's got your name written all over it. Check out the video after the jump and the high-res screencaps in the gallery below. Fuel releases for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Windows on June 5.

Gallery: Codemasters Fuel

[Source: Codemasters]
Continue reading VIDEO: Codemasters' FUEL features 5,000+ square miles of drivable terrain

VIDEO: Codemasters' FUEL features 5,000+ square miles of drivable terrain originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 12:29:00 EST. The software development company responsible for such favorite racing titles as DiRT, Grid and the TOCA series obtained the rights to make the game from Formula One Management, which previously licensed the rights exclusively to EA Sports and Sony. So while previous incarnations of the official F1 game were available only on Playstation systems (PS2, PS3 and PSP), Codemasters' new game will be available across all the major formats. So if you've got a current gaming console at home, you'll have a crack at playing the new F1 sim.

Codemasters has revealed that the game will be released in two stages. First up is F1 2009, a simpler form of the game that will be available for Nintendo Wii and Sony PSP. F1 2010 will follow next year in high-definition format for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PCs, taking full advantage of online gaming communities for head-to-head competition over the internet.
Electronic Arts, the folks who recently brought us Need for Speed: Undercover, are now working on three (possibly four) new titles in the franchise. According to EA, they're just trying to "keep the game fresh and the players entertained." If you're a cynic, you're getting another plate of something that hasn't tasted good since Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

Your three options will be NFS: Shift, NFS: Nitro, and NFS: World Online. Shift is "built for racers by racers" and will "deliver a true driver's experience that reflects contemporary motorsports." Nitro is an arcade take on the game with "a fresh and unique visual style." World Online is a free web-based player that "takes the race into the largest open world in the history of Need for Speed."

And if you believe the skinny from Eurogamer, EA is working on a fourth NFS that will continue the work of "crafting different games for different audiences and their unique tastes in the driving category." As for the ones we know about, Speed and Nitro will hit shelves this fall, with World Online following in winter. For now, you can can read the press release after the jump, and check out the high-res screenshots below.

Gallery: Need for Speed Shift, Nitro, and World Online

[Source: Joystiq]
Continue reading Need for Speed franchise splitting into trio

Need for Speed franchise splitting into trio originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Feb 2009 19:01:00 EST. It seems the Presidential hopeful has purchased virtual billboard space from Electronic Arts, the makers of the game. EA has confirmed the ad buy adding that it takes advertising from any credible source for placement in its video games. The ad itself shows Obama next to a message directing voters to voteforchange.com, a site that gives voters information about how to register and where to vote. Too bad Obama has cited video games as an obstacle to a good education as recently as yesterday, and there's no confirmation yet to the rumor that McCain is looking to buy spots on the Monopoly board.

[Source: Joystiq]
Barack Obama billboards spotted in Xbox 360's Burnout Paradise originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 14 Oct 2008 12:31:00 EST. The name of the game: arcade. Or better names might be 'free-for-all' and 'pedestrians, watch out!' It's cut like an MTV video, so it's hard to get a feel for the flow of the action, but all you need to know is that there'll be plenty of it -- action, that is. And if nothing else, it does seem to accurately depict how actual R8 drivers tend to pilot their cars... Follow the jump for the video.

[Source: Rockstar]
Continue reading VIDEO: Audi R8 puts angels in danger in Midnight Club: LA

VIDEO: Audi R8 puts angels in danger in Midnight Club: LA originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 25 Aug 2008 19:29:00 EST. Something about knocking a tenth of a second off our best time in the Mazda Demio was as addictive as air. Last Friday we spent an hour in front of the pre-production version of Midnight Club Los Angeles, and we've gotta admit... we're getting the itch for a PS3. Replacing several different cities for one highly detailed rendering of Los Angeles, the new Midnight Club is all about racing wherever you want -- in LA -- and however you want. While today's games are everything we've ever hoped for, iOpener Media appears ready to take the next step by letting gamers actually participate in race day. The Netherlands-based company has created a way of utilizing GPS signals of professional drivers from a live event to let gamers go head to head with the world's best on their TVs. Sweet! This technology could very soon give you the ability to participate virtually in a real race, provided that iOpener Media has set up track-side servers to communicate car positioning over the Internet and into your gaming console. The system is so accurate, it can determine the location of every vehicle in the race to within 30 cm.

iOpener Media doesn't intend to build the actual games, but it will offer its technology to game developers. It will also provide virtual reality software that blends real and virtual worlds by creating on-the-fly, real-looking crashes and take-over maneuvers that simulate the interaction between real and fake cars.

While such a game would give you a much better experience of racing in a real event, it isn't perfect. For example, Lewis Hamilton will never see you, so he won't react to your every move. Also, any real drivers that run into your virtual open wheel will go on untouched while you fly into a cement barrier. But it's still a new take on driving games, and if it provides enough real-life experience, hard-core gamers will love it. And the best part is that the technology has already been tested with an F1 car, and it could very well be a reality in time for the next Christmas shopping season. Thanks for the tip, Patrick!

[Source: BBC News]
Real-time virtual racing against live professionals coming soon originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Jun 2008 18:28:00 EST. First prize was a 2008 Buick Enclave CXL courtesy car used by Tiger during December's 2007 Target World Challenge golf tournament. Tiger won the tournament, finishing seven strokes ahead of '07 Masters champ Zach Johnson. Well, the contest is over and the winner has apparently taken delivery of the Buick, which came complete with a certificate of authenticity signed by Tiger himself. This might well be the only Buick Enclave in circulation that's Upper Deck authenticated.

Naturally, the car's new owner is looking to see if the Tiger connection is something that can be capitalized on, and the ride has been listed on eBay. Fully loaded, finished in Cocoa Metallic over Cocoa Cashmere, and showing just 220 miles on the clock, it's a really nice vehicle. As for the $100,000 Buy It Now price, well, that's ridiculous even with its certified, touched-by-Tiger history. According to the auction listing, eleven people have made offers, but there's no telling if they're anywhere near the asking price. We can't imagine they would be. Our advice: exercise some patience. Garage the Enclave, put the certificate of authenticity in a safe, and offer the whole package at Barrett-Jackson in January. As if by magic, a mundane, dealer-supplied courtesy vehicle becomes a "celebrity car". In B-J's massively hyped, more-money-than-sense environment, a hundred grand seems entirely feasible. Do we hear two hundred? Thanks for the tip, Steve.

Gallery: Buick Enclave touched by Tiger

[Source: eBay]
$100K for a Tiger Woods-used Enclave?

If current driving games have left your pulse cruising in the slow lane, then Codemasters, the company behind the well-received DiRT rally game, believes it has the racing game for you: Grid. Using an evolution of the engine from DiRT, Grid is all about racing. And if you think "racing game" means spending hours adjusting damper settings and orange-peel-metallic-fade-to-lilac paint jobs, then prepare to be shocked. Says Chief Game Designer Ralph Fulton, "This is not a game about collecting cars or spending all of your time in the front-end tuning suspension settings or designing liveries. We want to make racing exciting again." Well, for some, adjusting dampers is exciting, but we digress.

Grid says it will be a "step-change" in the racing game world, offering tracks in Japan, Europe, and America that highlight local racing flavors: drifting and underground in Japan, classic race tracks in Europe, and street venues in America that include Detroit. Cars will run from Koenigseggs and Astons in Europe to Camaros and Challengers in the US. We aren't sure how much more focused you could be on racing than in the driving games currently offered, but we're always up for a new player. Grid arrives in the middle of next year.

Continental Tire was hosting an XBOX Challenge, and Forza Motorsport 2 was the chosen battlefield. Our own John Neff typically spends his free time enjoying his console of choice, and Forza 2 is often his disc of choice. Our Editor in Chief jumped at the chance to compete for such prizes as an iPod and a set of high-end Kicker speakers, and we were there to tape the results. As you might recall, a Ferrari F430 was harmed during filming. Its closed-course playmates were a Tesla Roadster, SLR McLaren, a '63 'Vette and a sportbike (looks like it could be a Yamaha, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong). Well, today we get news that the final commercial is done. No surprise: it's cool. In other news, I really need to get an XBOX 360.

Thanks to Kardax for the tip. A solid week was spent chucking a Toyota Celica GT rally car around a muddy course before I promptly returned the console and got my money back. It was clear back then that the Sega Saturn was not the next-gen console we were expecting (though it did have its moments). Nevertheless, my week at home with Sega Rally GT Championship was memorable.

Sega has stopped selling hardware and focuses solely on its software now, which means the return of Sega Rally Championship will happen on both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 (What, no Wii?). The new game is scheduled for a Fall 2007 release date (probably October) and will be called SEGA Rally Revo when it arrives in stores.

Yours truly has been playing Forza 2 now for weeks (gamertag: Autoblog), but SEGA Rally Revo has some new features that will likely occupy more attention for months. Being a rally game, there is of course a varied selection of terrain including dirt, gravel and pavement, as well as different weather like rain and snow. Unlike any game before it, however, SEGA Rally Revo will feature "real-time terrain deformation", which means that the muddy rut you left on the last hairpin will be there on your next lap to dynamically affect your second pass. As SEGA says, no two laps can ever be the same since the track deteriorates under the extreme abuse of having a dozen high-powered rally cars tear it up.

Check out these two development videos to see these new features in action (second after the jump), and you can also view still shots from the game by visiting this gallery at our sister-site Joystiq.

[Source: Joystiq, YouTube]
Continue reading Rally-ho! After all, we grew up playing with Transformers toys (the metal ones!), and in this digital age we're more interested in controlling our robots in disguise than watching them dance around on screen.

From what we know, you'll be able to play the Transformers Game as either an Autobot defending the Earth or a Decepticon trying to detroy it. It would seem, then, that game features two campaigns, although we're hoping for a nice online multiplayer function, as well.

We have some screenshots of the game, but you're going to want to watch the game's trailer after the jump. If you've been waiting to see Optimus Prime fly off a building and transform midair, your wait is over.

[Source: IGN via Jalopnik]

Gallery: Transformers: the Game

Continue reading VIDEO: Transformers the Game... aw, hell yeah!

VIDEO: Transformers the Game... aw, hell yeah! originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 03 May 2007 14:57:00 EST. The new Z06 LS7-powered supercar from Arash Farboud and the rest of the gang at Farboud Sports Cars is still under development, but this item pertains to the company's first effort, the GTS.

The Farboud GTS is perhaps best known to U.S. enthusiasts via PGR3 on Xbox 360. Looking something like a Carrera GT, Exige and Koenigsegg ménage a trois lovechild, the car is finally nearing UK delivery. The company has announced that it hopes to have cars at dealerships by spring. And even better for U.S. fans, the development of the American version has been progressing nicely and U.S. deliveries should start soon after.

A dealership network including outlets in Maine, Oregon, New York and Michigan is in place and the first year production of 50 cars has already been allocated. Getting the car to comply with U.S. regulations and establishing warranty and service protocol have extended the initial delivery estimates, but it won't be much longer now according to the company.

Similar to the Nobles, the GTS is powered by a Cosworth tuned Ford V6, minus the turbo. In the Farboud the engine produces 275 hp, or 375 with the optional supercharger fitted. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but the last figure on record was just under £50,000. We can't wait to get our hands on one of these and see how it stacks up against the aforementioned Noble and other competitors.

Thanks for the tip, Mark. Cool site!

[Source: CoolBrit.net]
Farboud GTS nearing delivery originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 04 Jan 2007 14:35:00 EST. Included in the 90 licensed cars and bikes available for virtual flogging will be David Sichtermann's four-wheeled, mighty-morphin' one-seater. Judging by the above illustration, the prototype will have the ability to change its wheel placement depending on the desired driving style, moving further out for back-road bombin and tucking for high-speed cruising.

Over 100 designs were submitted to the Atari website and voted on over the course of a month and a half. To reward Mr. Sichtermann's creativity and fortitude he will be receiving a $2,500 cash prize, which he intends on putting towards his art school tuition.

Check out the stellar runner-ups after the jump, any one of which would look right at home on your XBox 360.

[Source: Atari]
Continue reading Atari chooses gamer-designed concept for Test Drive Unlimited

Atari chooses gamer-designed concept for Test Drive Unlimited originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 24 Jul 2006 07:04:00 EST. Gamers were given the ability to add three of Caddy's V-Series cars to the already-impressive group of rides included with the game.

This coming weekend, that relationship is going to get some high-profile exposure as the #16 CTS-V SPEED GT racing car will sport a new PGR-themed livery for the Speed World Challenge race at Infineon Raceway. Cadillac is pulling out all the stops to make sure the car does well, as Corvette Racing's Johnny O'Connell will strap in behind the wheel. O'Connell, who along with teammate Ron Fellows has won his last five ALMS races at Infineon, will see if he can work his magic with the Cadillac and finish atop the podium. Reigining SPEED GT champ and Cadillac teammate Andy Pilgrim will join O'Connell on the circuit in the #1 car.

The SPEED GT race is part of this weekend's NASCAR Nextel Cup festivities at Infineon, so a huge crowd and equally huge exposure for the Caddy/XBOX relationship are all but guaranteed.

(Photo, press release after the jump)

[Source: GM]
Continue reading Cadillac CTS-V racer promotes XBOX tie-in this weekend

Cadillac CTS-V racer promotes XBOX tie-in this weekend originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Jun 2006 16:34:00 EST.
