With its aggressive stance, classic lines and deep-throated growl, it'd take a really breathtaking array of exotic machinery to let a car like the Jaguar XKR go by unnoticed. Unfortunately for Jaguar, that's exactly what rolls up Lord March's lawn every summer for the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The stoic British marque has a long history of participation in the event, and came this year with its 225mph XFR and a host of rare classics. But apparently eager to make its mark, Jaguar turned up with a special-edition XKR, painting it a retina-burning shade of lime green with orange decals, just to make sure it got noticed.

The Goodwood Special upgrades the stock XKR with a lowered suspension, retuned exhaust, 21-inch alloys and satin graphite trim replacing the chrome. But the real treat is under the hood, where Coventry's finest have squeezed out a further twenty ponies from the supercharged 5.0-liter V8 for a total of 530 horsepower and 515 lb-ft of torque. Considering that the (anything but) ordinary 510 hp version rockets to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds, the extra power promises to take the sport coupe into even more rarified territory. Unfortunately for the time being the Goodwood Special remains a one-off, but Jaguar is reportedly keeping its ear to the ground for enough feedback to offer a limited production run.
About 20 minutes after heading south towards the Mediterranean, traffic on our four-lane roadway stops abruptly. The bus we have just passed pulls up on our right and an officer is standing in the middle of the roadway, waving the morass of motorists through - until we reach the head of the pack. He points at us, then motions towards an unpaved turnout where a handful of squad cars are accompanied by a dozen police officers.

We pull the white, droptop XK into the dirt lot, twist the rotary shifter into Park and within seconds we're being berated by a young officer with "CADET" embroidered across his upright baseball cap. Our French is about as good as our Klingon, so after realizing we don't speak the native tongue, he snatches our documents and leaves us to stew.

A few minutes pass, at which point an older officer approaches and asks in perfect English, "Do you know why you are here?" We tepidly shake our heads as he informs us we were doing 60 km/h in a 40 zone. Our wallet recoils in horror as we remember the advice given to us earlier in the week: "The police in France are very strict about speed limits. The fine can run upwards of 1,500 euros (a little over $2,000) and it is payable on the spot." Just as thoughts of frantic phone calls, maxed-out credit cards and the atrocities that await us in a Parisian jail cell begin to flood our minds, the officer cocks his head sideways, realizes we're a pair of dimwitted Americans and simply says, "Please be more careful."

So begins our time with the foursome of Jaguar's newest offerings, and we haven't even sampled the 510-horsepower XKR and XFR yet.

Gallery: First Drive: 2010 Jaguar XFR

Gallery: First Drive: 2010 Jaguar XKR

Photos Copyright (C)2009 Damon Lavrinc / Weblogs, Inc.
Continue reading First Drive: 2010 Jaguar XFR, XKR and one of the best V8s on the market

First Drive: 2010 Jaguar XFR, XKR and one of the best V8s on the market originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 29 May 2009 11:57:00 EST.
Click above for high-res image gallery of the 2010 Jaguar XKR

Emerging from Jaguar's press conference yesterday from a cloud of manufactured smoke and amidst the too-loud blare of the Gallagher Brothers were the stonking new XKR Coupe and Convertible.

While the exterior receives subtle changes (new front and rear bumper designs, LED taillamps), the real news is under the hood. More than just an augmented supercharger, the blown XKs receive Jag's all-new Gen III AJ-V8 that's supercharged and features direct injection, which makes it good for 510 brake horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque. That newfound power helps the 3800+ pound XKR reach 60 miles-per-hour in just 4.6 seconds. The new XKR also enjoys the same interior theater experience upon startup that debuted in the XF, including air vents that rotate around and the flush JaguarDrive gear selector.

In our time with the current XKR, we always enjoyed the shape and the interior as well as the ride, but were somewhat underwhelmed with the performance and handling. The new R promises to rectify at least the power deficiency versus some other European performance luxury coupes, so we're hoping that the handling comes along for the ride. Check out the gallery of live shots below and the press release after the jump.

Gallery: Detroit 2009: 2010 Jaguar XKR

Gallery: 2010 Jaguar XKR

Live photos copyright (C)2009 Drew Phillips / Weblogs, Inc.

The new XK, long due for a serious refresh, will show up in 2009 with the minor addition of the JaguarDrive selector a la XF and the major addition of a diesel engine to boost fuel economy and sales, along with two new V8s.

Since Jaguar's 2.7-liter V6, which puts out 204 hp and 320 lb-ft., is only getting bored out to 3.0 liters it probably won't match the numbers put up by BMW's 3.5-liter, at 286 hp and 427 lb-ft. But the larger lump should goose the horsepower number and seriously increase torque (we hope) at least to the level of Audi's 3.0-liter V6 diesel, which turns out 240 hp and 369 lb-ft.

If diesel economy and pump prices still don't register with you, there will still be two gas options to fuel the fires. The 4.2-liter V8 goes away to make room for the new 5.0-liter with 400 hp, and if you want whipped cream and cherries on top, hit Jaguar up for the supercharged XK-R with 500 hp.

[Source: CAR]
Spy Shots: Jaguar XK diesel under development originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Dec 2008 09:35:00 EST. Gearheads benefit a lot from this. It's easy to share pictures of our beloved rides, and with services like CafePress, you can even get some cool merchandise made up. Just like the record business is going after people who allegedly stole a whole bunch of music (how about the record company contracts, which are often a detailing of how the label will pillage an artist, cloaked in the fig leaf of legalese?), Ford has decided that it didn't like a bunch of Jaguar fans making up calendars and selling them to a small group of like-minded people. The idea that there'd be enthusiasts so enamored with one of its PAG properties that they'd go through all that effort was so abhorrent to Ford that the automaker shot off a trademark infringement lawsuit to put an end to the Leaper Love Fest. Maybe Jag's next owner will embrace the fans rather than alienate them.

Thanks for the tip, Chuck

[Source: XKE Data via Goolsbee.org]
"How about we alienate our fans?" - Ford takes a page from the RIAA playbook originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 12 Oct 2007 10:29:00 EST. The exterior is beautiful, with an aggressive stance, zero retro, and a coupe-like roof-line. The interior is even better, with innovative design features like the Jaguar Drive interface, coupled with top-notch materials and luxury amenities.

The automotive scribes from Car have been tracking Jaguar's newest cat for some time, and they've got the video to prove it. The endangered company from Coventry gave the European buff book exclusive access to its testing center, which resides at the legendary Nurburgring. Car uses moving pictures to take us into the secret facility, as well as a quick drive right through the endless twisties of the 'Ring. While the mag's video pros were on an XF-roll, they took the time to compile a nice montage of the production XF going through the paces on the track. Check out both videos after the break, you won't regret it.

[Source: Car]

Gallery: 2009 Jaguar XF

Continue reading VIDEO: Car rides shotgun 'round the 'Ring in the Jaguar XF

VIDEO: Car rides shotgun 'round the 'Ring in the Jaguar XF originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 10:28:00 EST.
When Aston Martin was up for bid a few months ago, billionaires that nobody has ever heard of were coming out of the woodwork to bid on the ultra-luxury lineup. Now Ford is trying to recapture the magic with the sale of its other two premium British Marquees, Jaguar and Land Rover. The problem is, Jaguar is a cash whore and Land Rover doesn't have nearly the cachet of Aston (big surprise). We've heard differing accounts as to the worth of Ford's unwanted PAG members, but Merrill Lynch pegs the number at between $1.3 billion and $1.5 billion. That certainly isn't chump change, but it's only marginally better than the $900 million that was paid for smallish Aston. Many of the "small-time" billionaires aren't bothering with this sale, even at lower financials, because they couldn't afford one of Jaguar's big-time losses, and stalwarts like Blackstone are rumored to be out, too. Hyundai and Nissan/Renault don't seem to be interested either.

Ford already brunted a lot of the financial pain for Jaguar when it closed a plant and bought out a lot of workers, and the forthcoming XF should help the bottom line immensely. Land Rover is profitable and has plenty of newer models to keep sales strong for the foreseeable future. We'd be surprised if there weren't a lot of sand-baggers that show up soon looking to get something for next to nothing.

The 3.5-liter V8 that currently resides in the XJ sedan is likely to find its way under the hood of the XK range, discounting the two-door coupe and cabrio by about €10,000.

The 3.5-liter V8 squeezes out a little over 250 HP, but with the replacement of the standard exhaust system with the unit pulled from its higher output siblings, it should be able to reach 60 in around seven seconds.

It's doubtful that this new engine option will be made available Stateside, as the powerplant swap would do little to spur sales.

[Source: Motor Authority]
Jag XK getting 3.5-liter V8 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 18 Jun 2007 08:33:00 EST. On the inside, owners that opted to wait a year will now get a choice of wood or aluminum inserts, piano black instrument and shifter surrounds, a bit more chrome, alloy pedals and an optional 525-watt Bowers & Wilkins audio arrangement.

As for the X-Type, the only visual change comes courtesy of new mesh grille and two new colors: Blue Prism and White Onyx. Well, the team from Coventry can't very well sit on its hands and wait for better days, so it's kicked off a seriesof webisodes to get to get the marketing ball rolling.

Beginning next week, Jaguar's little web gems will be hosted on the luxury broadband network, LX.TV. Each webisode stars the XKR, runs about three minutes in length, and the series will run for nine weeks. The spots, which are targeted to households of 25-49 year-olds earning over of $100,000 per year, will feature design projects, trends, and high-end exhibits. Each piece will be preempted by a 10-second Jaguar commercial, but the webisodes themselves are intended to be more than just a three minute commercial for the leaping cat.

Jaguar sales have been in the tank for a few years now, and it has gotten to the point that the niche XK is actually outselling the other Jags in the US. We don't know if these Jagisodes will push more product, but if they do, we'd be less than surprised to see new ones featuring the marque's other models.

[Source: BrandWeek]
Jaguar gets in on the webisodes game originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Apr 2007 15:04:00 EST. That pattern looks set to continue with a new entry level version of the XK. The 3.5L version of Jaguar's V-8 engine that is available in the XJ in some European countries is likely to be installed in the coupe and convertible.

The smaller engine is expected to put 256hp and have an exhaust system tuned to provide a sportier sound for the GT even with the seven second 0-62 MPH acceleration. The new model will probably only be available in Germany, Portugal, Austria, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg and come in at about €10,000 less than the 4.2L version.

[Source: CoolBrit.net]
For European consumption: Jag rumored to give XK a heart transplant originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Apr 2007 09:38:00 EST. It consists of a ground effects package that gives the new cat a lowered appearance, plus new mesh grillework in either silver or black. The new rear valance features integrated exhaust outlets and a set of new chrome tips that fit the cutouts precisely; this is the most interesting part of the set. Overall, it's not bad, but the new XK's shape strikes us as one that needn't be unnecessarily augmented by bolt-ons -- factory-provided or otherwise.

Have a look at the gallery and decide for yourselves. To show that it's aware of the problem, the British automaker rolled out the C-XF concept into Cobo Arena last night as a hint towards what corrective action we can expect when the new XF replaces Jag's aging entry-level sedan.

The car's entire shape is drawn around the recessed metal-mesh grille, and perhaps this is the most production-ready aspect of the C-XF's styling. The striking silhouette follows the current design trend towards making four doors blend into a couple-like rooflines, and is augmented with short front and long rear overhangs (the latter of which tapers dramatically); unfortunately, that probably won't make it to the production XF. Inside, carbon fiber mixes with poplar - blackened with torches - and copious amounts of machined aluminum to provide a rather gorgeous interior experience. Especially noteworthy are the trio of B&W drivers in the rear parcel shelf, and a rotary shifter residing in place of a conventional lever.

Check out the gallery for 66 shots from the official introduction and the press release can be found after the jump.

For our comprehensive listing of everything from Detroit, click here.
Continue reading Detroit Auto Show: Jaguar C-XF concept brings Gorgeous to the four-door crowd

Detroit Auto Show: Jaguar C-XF concept brings Gorgeous to the four-door crowd originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 08 Jan 2007 11:40:00 EST.
German tuning house Arden, a specialist in massaging British cars for over 30 years, has just taken the collar off its latest effort: the AJ 20 Coupe, a modified Jaguar XJ. As if the svelte panther wasn't adored enough in autodom, Arden is now offering a long list of enhancements to the engine, suspension, exhaust, body and interior to turn the XJ's stealthy purr into a screaming growl.

We'll start by popping the hood (or the bonnet, as our friends in the isles would say), where Arden has squeezed ninety-six extra horsepower out of the XK's 4.2-liter 298-hp V8 by boring it out to 4.5 liters and fitting new connecting rods and pistons, bringing peak output up to 392 horsepower. Buyers can also opt for a who-needs-an-XKR supercharger from Krefeld to bring the power up again to 480. Either way, Arden also upgrades the lubrication and cooling systems to cope with the extra catnip and tinkers with the engine management system. The naturally-aspirated 4.5-liter Arden drops nearly a second off the sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) at 5.3 seconds; the supercharger takes off another half second, with top speeds of 285 and 295 km/h respectively. That places the modded XK squarely in Porsche territory, where its big-brother Aston V8 Vantage had once dreamt to play.

At the four corners, Arden fits new springs to drop the suspension by 30 mm. They're also working on a full sports suspension with custom shocks. The AJ 20 comes fitted with 21-inch "Sportline" competition-style rims. Around back, Arden has installed a new silencer system with either two tips or four, and offers a full exhaust refit with new catalytic converters.

The body also gets its share of tweaks to make clear the car's more aggressive intentions. A new front airdam and spoiler, side sills down the rocker panels and a rear apron are all fitted with bigger air intakes. Arden also incorporated contrasting air vents on the hood (like the XKR) and on the front fenders (like the XJ Portfolio). There's also a pronounced rear lip spoiler on the tail to keep the cat's rear end planted.

Inside, Arden's interior department offers a host of options including reupholstering the seats in leather or Alcantara and a choice of custom wood-veneer or carbon-fiber dashboard trim, depending on the customer's tastes.

All in all, Arden's modifications to the Jaguar XK sharpen this cat's claws in a way that scratches us just right. (If only they could have done something about that unfortunate Ford Taurus nose.)

Follow the jump for a couple more pics.

The same goes for the XJ, which was totally redesigned yet still retains its identity as an XJ and nothing else. In fact, the entire Jaguar line has a nice family look about it. The man responsible for the Jaguar design language, Ian Callum, has been awarded the highest honor the UK can muster for designers, the Royal Designers for Industry award. The honor is given to recognize designers who have "achieved sustained excellence in aesthetic and efficient design for industry." In a nutshell, we think what they're trying to say is that since taking the design reins at Jaguar in '99, Ian Callum has made Jaguars look great without resorting to excess frippery. Callum also has had a hand in shaping various Aston Martin, Ford, TWR and Ghia vehicles throughout his career. With the debut of the new XK coupe, it looks like there'll be no shortage of gorgeous Jaguars for us to drool over anytime soon.

The full press release can be found after the jump.

[Source: Jaguar]
Continue reading Shaguar! Some sources suggested this was a facelift on the entire XK range, while others, recognizing the features of the supercharged XKR on the test mule, concluded this could be an even more suped-up version of the supercat. Now reports are surfacing that Jaguar is preparing the latter, tipped to be called the Jaguar XKR-R.

Fitting in between the "regular" XKR and the XKR GT3 race car we brought you last week, the XKR-R is slated to be a street-legal Jaguar on catnip, with 500 horsepower instead of the current XKR's 420. That should make for some very impressive performance indeed. Expect upgraded brakes, stiffened suspension and some additional visual enhancements to accompany the extra 80 horses.

The way for the XKR-R is being opened for Jaguar as parent company Ford prepares to sell Jaguar's sister company Aston Martin, the presence of whose V8 Vantage, which went down-market from the DB9, meant Jaguar couldn't go up-market with the XK range... until now.
