The day has finally arrived. Porsche cars have returned to the Forza Motorsport series on XBox 360 with the availability today of the Porsche Expansion Pack for Forza Motorsport 4. Pony up 1600 Microsoft Points ($19.99 in real world money) and you'll get 30 new cars, 20 new events, 10 new achievements and a Porsche-only Rivals Mode. Developer Turn 10 says that seven of the cars (scroll down for a full list) are all-new to the Forza series, which brings the game's fourth installment - including all of the vehicles released via downloadable content - to a grand total of 625 cars.

We know what you're thinking. Twenty bones is a lot to drop on a single chunk of downloadable content when you've already paid $60 for the game itself and another $30 for the Season Pass, the latter of which has already filled your virtual garage with dozens and dozens of extra cars to drive. That's all true, and no one would blame you for passing on this Porsche DLC, especially considering that Porsches were included with the price of the game in Forza 1, 2 and 3.

Consider this: 959, 962, 911 Sport Classic, GT2 RS ... Those are just four of the thirty cars from Stuttgart that you'll be passing up the opportunity to drive (digitally) if you say no to the Porsche Expansion Pack. So now that you're armed with all of the info, you can make the decision that's right for you while we go download our decision.

There are driving simulators and there are racing simulators. They tend to cross over, but what divides them are the types of cars and the types of roads used in the game. Drive racing cars on digitally recreated racing circuits and you're looking at a racing sim. Street cars on public roads (whether simulated or replicated) and you're playing a driving game. The Forza Motorsport franchise has always been more of a racing simulator than a driving game, but the minority of open roads that have appeared in the four iterations of the series so far are about to jump into their own game altogether with the launch of Forza Horizon.

Having made the initial announced back in March, Microsoft hand Turn 10 Studios have now released the box cover art and a single frame of in-game footage, both depicting the new SRT Viper on the open road. The cover, as you can see, shows a yellow Viper with black stripes speeding out of a mountain town, while the screenshot shows us a metallic Viper - like the one we saw at its unveiling in New York - on a desert highway in what looks like Carburator County from Pixar's Cars.

About a year and a half (if you can believe it) since the launch of Forza 4, the arrival of Forza Horizon will surely come as welcome and eagerly anticipated by the legions of racing and gaming fans that have enjoyed the various iterations of the franchise until now. All we know about its release is that it's coming sometime in the fall, but with the E3 gaming convention just a couple of weeks away, we should have more to bring you soon, so watch this space.

Forza Horizon coming this fall with hot Viper action on the open road originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 May 2012 17:30:00 EST. Anyone with an Xbox 360 and Forza Motorsport 4 will be able to get their hands on a virtual version of the all-new 2013 SRT Viper. As revealed at its New York Auto Show debut, the hotly anticipated American supercar is headed to the game as part of an exclusive Viper Pack.

Turn 10, the studio behind the game's development, has revealed that the Viper Pack will be available this summer, and in addition to a drivable version of the Viper, will also include a Viper Autovista experience that lets players inspect the car very closely using their controllers or the hands-free Kinect system. Pricing for the pack has not yet been mentioned, and though not confirmed, we hope the GTS-R racing version of the Viper that debuted alongside the production car will also be digitized for the game and included in the pack.

Sure, you can enjoy the Aston Martin LMP1 race car, a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 and the deviously capable Jaguar XKR-S in the new April Alpinestars Pack for Forza Motorsport 4. But a little further down the list of ten cars are some delightful sleepers: the 1972 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 that would inaugurate AMG's tuning and motorsports credentials (our personal favorite), the 1995 BMW M5 that cemented that model's reputation, and the 1997 Volvo 850 R that was still glowing from the wagon's racing campaign in the British Touring Car Championship.

The pack will be available for 560 MS points on April 3 (or free for those with a Season Pass), and is rounded out by the Maserati Quattosporte Sport GT S, 1985 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE, 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible, and 2012 Scion TC.
Now that Forza Motorsport 4 developer Turn 10 Studios and Need for Speed developer Electronic Arts finally "found the right terms," you can have Porsche in your Forza. The Porsche Expansion Pack will be available for 1,600 MS points or $19.99, and will reward you with 30 products from the Stuttgart maker including the 2010 911 Sport Classic. Turn 10 says that seven of the 30 will be completely new to the series, which probably means you can expect the return of classics from Forza 3 like the 962.

The pack isn't included in the game's Season Pass, but your Porsche Expansion Pack won't just get cars, either: there will be 20 new events, 10 XBox Live achievements and a Rivals Mode all based on Porsches as well. The pack is scheduled to be available on May 22 and will take FM4's car count (with DLCs) to 625. The licensing deal isn't long-term, so if Porsches are your thing you should mark May 22 on your calendar.

The other two new events on the Forza 4 horizon are that level caps have been raised from 150 to 999, and a new game called Forza Horizon is on the way. It's being developed by an outside studio called Playground Games and no one seems to know anything about it beyond Turn 10's assessment that "it's a fast-paced pick-up-and-play racing game." There's a video trailer for Horizon after the jump that won't tell you anything more than you already know, but sounds pretty cool.
Continue reading Porsche Expansion Pack bringing 30 cars to Forza Motorsport 4 [w/video]

Porsche Expansion Pack bringing 30 cars to Forza Motorsport 4 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 05 Mar 2012 13:30:00 EST.
Another month, another pack of downloadable content for Forza Motorsport 4. This month's DLC car pack, called the March Pirelli Car Pack, features 10 new cars that could potentially find their way into your Forza garage. Why call it the March Pirelli Car Pack? The team from Turn 10 Studios responsible for developing Forza Motorsport 4 says that actual tire performance data from Pirelli helped them dial in the most realistic handling possible for each car.

This month's car pack includes some true gems, most notable of which is the Aston Martin V12 Zagato. As the production version was just revealed less than a month ago and won't make its official debut until next week at the Geneva Motor Show, the car in the game is the concept from last year on which it's based, though you'd be hard pressed to tell any differences between the two.

The most peculiar car in this month's car pack is definitely the 1966 Ford Country Squire. The giant woody wagon comes from era of Country Squires that featured the Magic Door Gate, which both flipped down like a tailgate and swung open from the side. An interesting factoid, though Turn 10 says it doesn't make a difference in the game.

We're also excited to try the Ultima GTR, versions of which have set all sorts of world records related to speed and quickness. The version in the game is less powerful than those headline-makers, being powered by a Corvette engine producing 565 horsepower, but it still weighs just 2,200 lbs.

Check out the full list of 10 cars in the March Pirelli Car Pack below and follow the jump for the official trailer. The pack will be available on Tuesday, March 6 for 560 MS points ($7) or is free for those who have already purchased the Season Pass.

The ladies and gentlemen at Turn 10, the studio behind Forza Motorsport 4, take their cars just as seriously as their gaming. They're not the only gamers to invest heaps of time rendering metal into pixels, but you might be surprised just how much travel, how many microphones, how long on the dyno and what kinds of owners go into gathering the selection of rides.

If you've wondered what goes into taking a Bugatti Veyron, or even a Honda Civic Si, from the parking lot to the game's custom Bernese Alps track, then there's a video just for you after the jump.
Continue reading How Forza Motorsport 4 gets its cars

How Forza Motorsport 4 gets its cars originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 Feb 2012 18:59:00 EST.
If you've been enjoying Forza 4 on your Xbox 360 but have been clamoring for some new cars to try out, you'll want to mark February 7 on your calendar. That's when Microsoft is releasing the new American Le Mans Series pack, complete with ten new cars in digital, downloadable format.

The February ALMS Pack includes some serious race machinery, including the Audi R18 TDI that reigns as current champion at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Mazda 787B that was the last Japanese car to win the race back in 1991, the new Panoz Abruzzi "Spirit of Le Mans", and the iconic 1986 Audi Sport Quattro S1. Also included are the Platinum Motorsport Bentley Continental GT, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's Dodge Challenger SRT8, the 1992 Alfa Romeo 155 Q4 touring-car-for-the-road, the 1995 Ford Mustang Cobra R, the Holden HSV GTS and, for when a little hatchback is called for, the Volkswagen Polo GTI.

The downloadable content pack is included in the Forza Motorsport 4 Season Pass, or can be bought for 560 MS Points (worth $7). Check out the new additions in the video after the jump and the image gallery above.
Continue reading February ALMS Pack brings R18 and 787B to Forza 4 [w/video]

February ALMS Pack brings R18 and 787B to Forza 4 [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 31 Jan 2012 19:30:00 EST. Turn 10 released the December IGN pack for Forza Motorsport 4 last week, complete with a laundry-list of drool-worthy digital rides for your racing enjoyment. Those start with the beastly Suzuki Monster Sport SX4 Hill Climb Special, which is the same machine that broke the ten-minute barrier at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this year.

As juicy as that is, we're more stoked to get our hands on hardware like the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, the '77 Escort RS1800 and the '88 Pontiac Fiero GT. Volkswagen fans will be happy to see the addition of the '81 Scirocco S, too.

The December pack is available through XBox Live and features 10 new vehicles for the game to collect, race or paint to your heart's desire. Hit the jump to check out a video of the new cars (and trucks) in action and head over to the Forza Site for more information.
Continue reading Forza Motorsport 4 releases December IGN pack

Forza Motorsport 4 releases December IGN pack originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 12 Dec 2011 16:55:00 EST. In the interest of full disclosure, I should make it clear up front that I have always been a loyal devotee of Gran Turismo. The series helped craft my automotive knowledge through middle school and high school, helped me choose the proper spring rates for my track rat in college, and generally consumed days and days of my young life. So when Turn 10 introduced Forza Motorsport for the Microsoft xBox in 2005, I was skeptical. Whereas Gran Turismo seemed to push the realism line ever further, Forza Motorsport felt laced with traces of Cruisin' USA or some other relic of the arcade circuit. But that was then.

The Forza Motorsport series has matured significantly over the intervening six years, and Forza Motorsport 4 has debuted as the pinnacle of xBox automotive entertainment. With over 80 manufacturers on hand and 22 tracks, each with multiple configurations, this latest version promises to be an eruption of digital motorsports glory.

With Gran Turismo 5 currently collecting dust and wallowing in a tepid pool of disappointment, it was finally time to give Forza another shot. Turn 10 was kind enough to provide a review copy as well as a loaner xBox 360 for a week. I tried not to look my Playstation 3 in the eye as I wired up the rival machine, brushed off any traitorous feelings and hit the power button. It was time to go racing.

Forza Motorsport 4 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 11 Oct 2011 11:57:00 EST.
"What you are about to see is a fantasy. It has no place in the real world."

That's how the latest trailer for Forza Motorsport 4 begins, and when a video game trailer needs that kind of warning, you know things are about to get good.

And then Jeremy Clarkson's voiceover begins, telling us all that we're an endangered species. We, in this case, are those who consider themselves to be automotive enthusiasts. And there's video to back up this assertion, as a man (in the back seat of an economy car, no less) sits in traffic seemingly on his way to work (All it's missing is REM's "Everybody Hurts" - Ed).

Fear not, petrolheads. Soon, a waiting Aston Martin DB9 is fired up, tires squeal and smoke and our protagonist finds himself wildly escaping the confines of the city and its traffic. But wait. What's that? Uh oh, the local constabulary has caught on to our man's actions, and they aren't pleased. He's trapped. Again.

The moral of the story? Get your kicks where it's legal: in your living room, on your xBox 360, playing Forza 4. Thanks, Jeremy, for the friendly reminder. Check out the video for yourself after the break, where you'll also find an accompanying press release.

In related news, Turn 10 has announced that the Forza 4 demo is available to xBox Live Gold members beginning today. Enjoy!
Continue reading Forza 4 Endangered Species trailer features Jeremy Clarkson

Forza 4 Endangered Species trailer features Jeremy Clarkson originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 03 Oct 2011 14:56:00 EST.
Gamers, Turn 10 Studios is about to have you say goodbye to your family and friends. Forza Motorsport 4 is nearly available for purchase, and the creative team has let slip a few goodies that will be included with the game. We've already heard about the involvement of Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson, and how the developers turn a real track into a virtual one. Today, however, we've learned that there's a whole lot more in store for us.

The game hits stores on October 11th, but XBox Live Gold members can grab a demo version starting on October 3rd. Everyone else needs to wait until the 7th for their shot at the demo. When the full version of the game hits a few days later, fresh downloadable content will be available.

Now, DLC will be offered throughout the game's life cycle. To make sure you have access to it as it becomes available, Forza 4 offers a season pass. Paying $29.99 ensures that you get access to all six of the soon-to-be-released content packs. Buying in bulk also saves you 30 percent over buying each pack individually. This plan also provides you with a bonus American Muscle car pack. It adds the 1965 Pontiac GTO, 1968 Pontiac Firebird, 1970 Buick GSX, 1970 Dodge Coronet Super Bee, 1966 Chevrolet Nova SS, 1969 Shelby GT500 428CJ, 1971 Plymouth GTX 426 Hemi, 1967 Dodge Coronet W023, 1968 Dodge Dart HEMI Super Stock and 1964 Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt to your list of playable vehicles.

Turn 10 has gone to great lengths to include famous race tracks from around the world, and has announced that the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the latest to be added to the game. Click past the jump for the full skinny from Turn 10.

Also, be sure to check back next week when we share our thoughts on the game... oh, we didn't tell you? We've already gotten to play it.
Being a video game designer sounds like fun. And when the video game you're designing involves recreating famous racetracks from around the world, you're definitely having more fun than the average cubicle-dweller.

The developers at Turn 10 Studios have to do exactly that for the upcoming Forza 4 video game. It's an interesting process, and Turn 10 has released a video showing us how it's done. It highlights the nearly three-mile-long Hockenheim circuit in Germany, which features 13 turns and plays host to both the German Grand Prix and DTM events.

We won't spoil the track-creation magic for you. Instead, click past the jump and let Turn 10 demonstrate how it happens.
Continue reading Forza Motorsport 4 shows the making of its Hockenheim track

Forza Motorsport 4 shows the making of its Hockenheim track originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 19:29:00 EST.
One of the most complex parts of a modern Formula One car is its steering wheel, which can be worth tens of thousands of dollars on its own and packing all the controls you'd expect to find on a dashboard right onto the wheel itself. Ferrari took a similar approach with the steering wheel on the 458 Italia, moving the starter button, chassis mode dial, windshield wiper controls, headlights, turning indicators... everything right onto the face of the wheel, while removing the usual stalks to allow for unimpeded access to the oversize shift paddles.

The result is a thorough rethink of one of the automobile's most basic components, though some have derided it as too complex. And if you're one of those who thought the end result looks more like a video game controller than a car's steering wheel, you're not alone: feast your eyes on the latest device from Thrustmaster.

Designed as a controller for driving and racing games on the Microsoft xBox 360, the Ferrari 458 replica wheel is flush with all the functions you'd need for playing Forza 4 or the latest Need for Speed game the way it ought to be played. Coming this October for less than $90, it's considerably more affordable than some of Fanatec's offerings, and could be just the thing to keep us from getting any work done. Check it out in the gallery and follow the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Ferrari 458 steering wheel replicated as Xbox 360 controller

Ferrari 458 steering wheel replicated as Xbox 360 controller originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 09:01:00 EST. The Top Gear presenter has reportedly joined forces with Turn 10 Studios to lend his voice and automotive knowledge to the company's upcoming Forza 4 video game.

There's a portion of Forza 4 called AutoVista, which is an in-game showroom where players can examine cars in great detail. Clarkson provides commentary in this area of the game, giving players his voiced-over viewpoint on specific cars.

We can only hope and assume that the commentary will include some of Jezza's trademark catchphrases like "...in the world." Regardless, adding Clarkson only rounds out the amount of Top Gear goodies found in the new game, all of which should be enough to have at least a few Sony PS3 owners considering making the switch to Microsoft's Xbox 360.
Jeremy Clarkson to narrate Forza 4 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 14:01:00 EST.
Polyphony Digital took its sweet time bringing us GT5. It took five years for the game to arrive in stores and the homes of PS3 fans across the world. Turn 10 Studios clearly works a bit quicker, and the next chapter in the Forza series is on schedule for a late 2011 arrival. Forza 4 will no doubt be packed with slick graphics and drool-inducing vehicles, but the gaming company is also taking advantage of another Microsoft tie-in - Kinect.

The Kinect system for the Xbox 360 "sees" a players movements. Kinect allows the player to interact with the game, without using controllers. Forza 4 will allow a user to drive a car using his or her hands to mimic a steering wheel. It's more than playing "kiddie vroom vroom" though. Kinect will allow you to look into turns, take tours of the vehicles and walk around the parked cars.

Sounds kind of crazy? Click past the jump to check it out for yourself.
Continue reading Forza 4 brings Kinect functionality to the racing sim

Forza 4 brings Kinect functionality to the racing sim originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 02 Jun 2011 19:57:00 EST.
Someone at Turn 10 Studios has apparently "leaked" (sure, guys) a fully-polished, high-quality sneak peek at its upcoming Forza Motorsport 4 to YouTube. The newest installment of Forza leverages Kinect technology, allowing players to open the doors and hoods of their cars with hand motions and fire the engine from the driver's seat. During a race, Kinect also lets players look around corners by detecting head movement.

Turn 10 says its goal is to produce the best-looking racing sim of 2011, employing methods like image-based lighting to get as much photorealistic quality as they can out of each car and track. Turn 10 also says that Forza 4 will have the most extensive range of models to choose from, with cars from over 80 manufacturers. Plan on slipping Forza 4 into your XBOX 360 in October. In the meantime, check out the "leaked" trailer after the jump.

It was a risky proposition: taking a series as fabled for its antics as Need for Speed and placing it into the cold, calculating hands of a simulation developer. That developer is Slightly Mad Studios, which has roots to the SimBin team that created the groundbreaking GTR on the PC. The resulting game was the first Need for Speed: Shift - truly a fresh title and, more importantly, a truly great racer, managing to straddle the console racing and simulation genres and do both admirably well.

Now, it's sequel time. Ian Bell, sim-racing guru and co-founder of Slightly Mad, said that this game has the "most advanced physics system ever released." We're not sure we'd go quite that far, but in testing this one we're quite confident in saying that this is certainly the most realistic Need for Speed game yet, which is perhaps why it's officially shedding that prefix and just billing itself as Shift 2 on the PS3, xBox 360, and PC. Still, not everyone will enjoy the punishment this game can offer, so read on to see whether this is one supercar sim that's for you.

It's hard to believe that four and a half years have passed since Eden Studios took its best shot at merging the open online gameplay of an MMO with a racer to create the original Test Drive Unlimited. Most would agree that the attempt wasn't exactly perfect, but that didn't stop TDU from being refreshing and incredibly fun to play. Really, who wouldn't get behind the idea of amassing a collection of gorgeous cars and recklessly racing them all over Oahu?

And so, similarly, who wouldn't get behind the idea of amassing a huge collection of amazing cars and racing them around both Oahu and Ibiza? Yes, this time gamers will be putting on their clubbing duds and hitting the Mediterranean party island as well, with the two rocks offering over 1,500 miles of roads - some of them unpaved. A lot has changed on this second trip to paradise, but even more has stayed the same. Is there enough new to make this journey worthwhile a second time?

No one ever said getting behind the wheel of a Porsche was going to be cheap. Especially not a 911 GT2. But if the $245k that the new GT2 RS road car would set you back strikes you as a bit steep, check out the latest rig from Fanatec.

The German gamewear concern has a penchant for making steering wheel set-ups for your favorite gaming platform, like the 911 Turbo and Turbo S wheels we're reported on previously. But the latest takes the cake.

Modeled on the 911 GT2, this wheel gets all the details down pat, and then some. The 12-inch rim is covered in hand-stitched Alcantara, and three force-feedback motors are there to provide as darn-near-real an experience as we've ever seen.

It can work with the XBox 360, PlayStation 3 or your computer, but like the car it's modeled on, it don't come cheap: $250 is the retail price for the wheel alone, which can be hooked up with pedals and shifter if you've got those already. If you don't, the full $500 Clubsport edition gives you the foot gear and a variety of shifting choices, including paddles, a sequential lever and an H-gate. Check it out for yourself in the gallery below.
