<br /> Undoubtedly, one vehicle with the potential to profit handsomely from this week's expected rush by Americans to unload old gas guzzlers for newer, more thrifty vehicles is Volkswagen's Jetta TDI. With owners reporting typical real-world mileage of around 35-40 mpg along with superior dynamics to most hybrids and relatively sedate pricing, the Jetta TDI seems perfectly positioned to grab a lot of attention. Unfortunately for Volkswagen dealers, though, it just ain't happening. You see, there are virtually no Jetta TDIs to be had anywhere, especially if you were hoping to get a Sportwagen.<br /> <br /> Bringing the story closer to home, this author has personally been out shopping the last several days in search of a TDI Sportwagen to replace the wife's nine-year old Passat (which unfortunately doesn't quite qualify for clunker status) - all to no avail. After checking with local dealers and calling showrooms all over Michigan and Ohio, there simply are no TDI wagons. Anything still on the lot already has a deposit check tied to it and the few still on trucks are also accounted for. A few sedans apparently remain, but they seem likely to go fast as well.<br /> <br /> According to the salesman at Howard Cooper Volkswagen in Ann Arbor, the problem is that the 2009 model run has expired and Germany takes the month of August off. As a result, no diesel engines will be shipped to Mexico in August, so VW's Puebla plant can't assemble more cars to meet demand.<br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi-sportwagen/low/">2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Sportwagen</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/2009-jetta-tdi-sportwagen-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/2009-jetta-tdi-sportwagen-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/2009-jetta-tdi-sportwagen-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/2009-jetta-tdi-sportwagen-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/2009-jetta-tdi-sportwagen-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> <em><strong><small>Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/29/hoping-to-snag-a-jetta-tdi-with-your-clunker-cash-sorry-too-la/">Hoping to snag a Jetta TDI with your clunker cash? <br />General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Honda and everyone else may not think there is much of a market for mainstream diesel vehicles in the United States, but Volkswagen would beg to differ. Since it launched its new generation diesels last fall in the Jetta and earlier this year in the Touareg, they have been selling like hotcakes with June being its best month yet. Last month was the best sales month to date for the Sportwagen with 1,982 sales and a whopping 81% of those were equipped with the 2.0-liter TDI four-cylinder. <br /><br />Among the 8,431 Jetta sedans sold in June, 40% were diesel powered. And while the Touareg followed most other SUVs with a 41% overall decline to only 330 units in June, 29% of those had the 3.0-liter V6 TDI engine. Rabbit sales were down 69% in June, but a redesigned Golf is arriving in September, including a TDI - and if fuel prices keep climbing through the summer, it could see a huge sales spike as well. <br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/">First Drive: 2009 VW Jetta Sportwagen</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Volkswagen]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/01/diesels-grab-81-of-june-volkswagen-jetta-sportwagen-sales/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Diesel TDI model grabs 81% of VW Jetta Sportwagen sales in June</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/01/diesels-grab-81-of-june-volkswagen-jetta-sportwagen-sales/">Diesel TDI model grabs 81% of VW Jetta Sportwagen sales in June</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 18:39:00 EST. <div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;"><br />Take a close look at the picture above. Although it might look like a new Jetta wagon, it's actually the New Golf Estate for Europe. Over there, they sell the load-lugging Variant as a Golf rather than a Jetta. Over here in the States, it is likely to eventually appear as the Jetta Wagon when the new Mk.VI models start showing up. For now, the Europeans get an updated hauler both inside and out that goes on sale in Germany this Friday at a starting price of &euro;18,500 (about $25,700 USD).<br /><br />That base price includes ESP, six airbags, daytime running lights, roof rails, power windows, power and heated outside mirrors, split-folding rear bench seat, remote central locking, and climate control. There will be three trim levels offered in mainland Europe: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline, the latter of which replaces Sportline. The six engine options are all Euro-5 emissions compliant, and include 122 &amp; 160 PS TSI direct-injected gas engines (120 and 158 horsepower, respectively), 105 &amp; 140 PS TDI common rail turbo-diesels (104 hp/138 hp), and two Multipoint engines delivering 80 PS or 102 PS (79 hp or 101 hp). All but the last two powerplants will be available paired with the DSG dual-clutch transmission.<br /><br />The most obvious change on the outside of the new model is the institution of VW's fresh corporate face. The large, chrome, somewhat vertical front graphic has been replaced by a more horizontal grille with less bling. The tail receives a similarly simplified freshening. <br /><br />Inside, the New Golf Estate gets the same high-quality interior and new gauges and switchgear of the regular Mk. VI Golf. Underhood, the entirely new 105 PS 1.6-liter four cylinder TDI promises to be quiet and clean, with low emissions (119 g/km CO2) and "an extremely low average fuel consumption," of 4.5 liters per hundred kilometers (that's about 52 mpg U.S.). Even the hottest 160 PS TSI returns 100 km for just 6.4 liters of petrol (37 mpg), or 6.1 with the DSG (39 mpg). There's a full press release <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/21/volkswagen-rolls-out-2010-strike-jetta-strike-golf-wagon/">after the jump</a> and a gallery available by clicking any image.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-golf-estate/low/">2010 Volkswagen Golf Estate</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-golf-estate/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/2010newgolfestate---1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-golf-estate/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/2010newgolfestate---2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-golf-estate/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/2010newgolfestate---3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-golf-estate/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/2010newgolfestate---4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-golf-estate/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/2010newgolfestate---5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Volkswagen]<br /><br /></div>

Perhaps buyers don't realize that these ain't the old Rabbit rattlers that cost three cents to run and would rack up a billion miles with five tanks of fuel. TDI maintenance costs are not insignificant, but the allure of inherent efficiency has folks putting their money where their mouths are and some dealers have sold out before even taking delivery. All in all, an auspicious start for the latest TDI Jetta. <br /><br />Not faring as well is the Tiguan, VW's smallest 'ute. While we find the Tiguan delightful to drive and well executed besides the smallish cargo area (Jetta Wagon FTW), the launch hasn't gone as swimmingly as Wolfsburg had hoped. Maybe the TDI powertrain could add some sales sparkle to the Tiguan. It would fit, being on basically the same platform as the Golf. <br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20080714/ANA06/807140333/1193">Automotive News</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/14/jetta-tdi-hotcakes-tiguan-not-so-much/">Jetta TDI = hotcakes, Tiguan, not so much</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 21:15:00 EST. More recently, VW has been indicating that the Jetta TDI is capable of up to 60mpg on the highway. The first of the new 50-state legal Jettas were recently spotted on their way to dealerships and now the EPA has published official mileage numbers. Unfortunately, wrong those numbers don't quite match up with what VW has been claiming. <br /><br />According to the <a href="http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm">official listing</a> at FuelEconomy.gov, the 6-speed manual 2009 VW Jetta TDI managed 30mpg on the city cycle and 41mpg on the highway cycle, making its combined number 34mpg. Now those numbers are certainly respectable and nothing to sneeze at, but they fall well short of VW's predictions. Nonetheless, the TDI rates 41.7-percent better than the 2.5L five cylinder and 36-percent better than the 2.0 TFSI four cylinder. The big question is what will a diesel Jetta do in the real world? According to VW spokesman Keith Price, Volkswagen's diesels typically do better in real world mileage than the EPA sticker values. VW, you know where to find our garage so we can judge for ourselves. <em>Thanks for the tip, Conner and Jason!</em><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/">First Drive: 2009 VW Jetta Sportwagen</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="javascript:void(0);/*1211328552796*/">FuelEconomy.gov</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/21/official-epa-numbers-posted-for-the-09-jetta-tdi-30-41mpg/">Official EPA numbers posted for the '09 Jetta TDI - 30/41mpg</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 21 May 2008 09:27:00 EST. In a preview to journalists, VW showed off the new design of the vehicle, which has a "sweeping roofline" akin to that of the Saab 9-3 SportCombi and Mercedes-Benz C-class wagon. It also sports a roof spoiler, more room than its predecessor, and several engine options:&nbsp;<!--StartFragment --> 2.5L inline five cylinder, a 2.0L turbo four cylinder and a GLI sport model. The diesel should return in 2008 once VW and the U.S. government can work out its diesel differences.</p>
