<br />
It seems that we'll be getting a new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/jetta">Jetta</a> sedan next June, and it apparently won't be a slightly restyled Golf with a trunk grafted to the rear end. According to <em>Car and Driver</em>, VW's so-called <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/31/spy-shots-2011-vw-jetta-sedan/">New Compact Sedan</a>, which will be <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/22/report-vw-chooses-mexican-plant-for-new-compact-sedan/">built at the same Mexican plant</a> that assembles the current Jetta, will indeed retain the Jetta nameplate.<br />
<br />
Following its June debut here in the States, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volkswagen">Volkswagen</a> will prep the car for its European launch later in the year, and it may or may not be called Jetta overseas. A sportier GLI variant will continue to be offered on the new model. Looking farther down the model-range totem pole, there's a decent chance that VW will bring the Polo to the U.S. market to rival the new Ford Fiesta, possibly as both a sedan and a hatchback.<br />
<br />
Lastly, we're told that we should expect to see a new U.S.market-tailored two-door notchback coupe concept on the show circuit in short order. If public reaction to it is positive, there's a good chance VW will greenlight the car for series production.<br />

<br />
When we were in Germany last month for the launch of the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/15/2010-volkswagen-golf-first-drive/">2010 Golf</a>, VW product planner Andres Valbuena told us that a special street replica of the Jetta TDI Cup race car would be launching in January 2010. We just got the first photo of the new limited edition model along with further details. The TDI Cup "Street" edition gets the same deeper front fascia, rocker panel and rear bumper extensions used on the race cars. Unfortunately, the replica keeps the standard 140-horsepower engine rather the uprated 170-hp diesel used in the track cars... but it does get <em>some</em> functional upgrades.<br />
<br />
The replica won't be any quicker off the line, but it will stop and turn better than standard TDI models. The brake calipers are larger than standard and painted red to let observers know they are special. The suspension gets thicker sway bars and the retuned springs and dampers from the Jetta GLI along with 18-inch wheels. Inside, the Cup car gets a paddle shift steering wheel to go with the 6-speed DSG gearbox. The Cup Jetta starts at $25,000 and will be available in January.<br />

<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-golf-estate/2028120/"><img hspace="4" vspace="4" border="0" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/09/2010newgolfestate-crop.jpg" /></a>For 2010, Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagens in North America will get a new face courtesy of the MK VI Golf that will also debut here in a few weeks. The sedans, on the other hand, will keep the MK V-style oversize chrome grille for another year. Not everyone is enamored with the older and more audacious grille, and one reader at VWVortex broke out the Photoshop and went to work. Based on recent spy shots, next year's Jetta sedan will get the face and fanny lift and this image provides a hint as to what it might look like.<br />
<br />
Overall, the front fascia is a no-brainer based on what we've seen of the Golf and Sportwagen. Where the sedan image is likely to be in error is the character line across the front fenders. As seen on the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/29/vw-of-america-confirms-that-2010-jetta-sportwagen-gets-new-face/">previous images of the wagon</a>, the crease actually blends into the wheel arch lip at the top rather cutting so high across it. Either way, we'd guess many will think it's an improvement over the current style. <em>Thanks to Kent for the tip!</em><br />

<br />
After <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/09/in-the-autoblog-garage-volkswagen-jetta-2-5-se/">spending time</a> with the Jetta sedan last year, we came away mostly impressed by its performance and looks. V-Dub's bread-and-butter model is handsome enough to keep buyers interested, but every design gets stale and after wearing the same duds <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2004/12/28/new-jetta-pictures-lots-of-them/">since 2004</a>, VW is working on all-new sheetmetal for the 2011 model year.<br />
<br />
KPG caught the new Jetta Sedan undergoing hot-weather testing in Arizona, and while most of the shots show little more than swaths of black camo, the heat and wind worked away at the adhesive to reveal crisper lines, a swoopier roof, a more angled rear side window and some snazzy looking taillights. <br />
<br />
VW is calling the revised Jetta its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/22/report-vw-chooses-mexican-plant-for-new-compact-sedan/">"New Compact Sedan"</a> and the Jetta name is in no danger of being changed. Expect the 2011 Jetta to take aim at the Civic and Corolla with a significant drop in its base price when it goes on sale late next year.<br />

Oh, and he also plans to turn a profit in the process. Perhaps someone should remind him how that's gone for <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/08/toyota-hammered-with-7-7b-loss-in-q1/">Toyota</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/01/officially-official-gm-files-for-chapter-11-bankruptcy/">General Motors</a> over the last few decades? Just like any proper plan to attack the global automotive market, VW's strategy includes introducing new models aimed at the heart of the market, including a new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/15/volkswagen-announces-plans-for-factory-in-chattanooga-tenn/">American-made</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/12/first-sketch-emerges-of-volkswagens-new-mid-size-sedan-from-ten/">midsize sedan</a> targeting the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Chevrolet Malibu and Ford Fusion.<br /> <br /> In fact, Volkswagen aims to refresh its entire lineup by 2011, and that product renaissance will reportedly entail a revised New Beetle and Jetta that are specifically tasked with catering to American automotive tastes. Also in the pipeline is a new seven-seat CUV that will go head-to-head with the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander and Chevy Traverse, though a pickup apparently isn't in the cards. We're not sure where that leaves the automaker's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/volkswagenup">subcompact Up!</a>, but Jacoby did mention that smaller models are under consideration.<br /> <br /> Of course, if VW is going to play on the same level as Toyota and the rest of the gang, quality is going to need to be up to snuff, and that's something Jacoby says the automaker is working to improve. The trick will be accomplishing all of these assorted goals while maintaining VW's status as a desirable nameplate among image-conscious buyers. "It's not our intention to make VW a boring brand," he says. Pretty ambitious plans... what could possibly go wrong?<br /> <br /> [Source: <a href="http://www.freep.com/article/20090826/BUSINESS01/90826068/1014/rss13">The Detroit Free Press</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/27/vws-jacoby-outlines-future-u-s-product-strategy-plans-to-take/">VW's Jacoby outlines future U.S. product strategy, plans to take over the world</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 27 Aug 2009 10:31:00 EST. <br /> Undoubtedly, one vehicle with the potential to profit handsomely from this week's expected rush by Americans to unload old gas guzzlers for newer, more thrifty vehicles is Volkswagen's Jetta TDI. With owners reporting typical real-world mileage of around 35-40 mpg along with superior dynamics to most hybrids and relatively sedate pricing, the Jetta TDI seems perfectly positioned to grab a lot of attention. Unfortunately for Volkswagen dealers, though, it just ain't happening. You see, there are virtually no Jetta TDIs to be had anywhere, especially if you were hoping to get a Sportwagen.<br /> <br /> Bringing the story closer to home, this author has personally been out shopping the last several days in search of a TDI Sportwagen to replace the wife's nine-year old Passat (which unfortunately doesn't quite qualify for clunker status) - all to no avail. After checking with local dealers and calling showrooms all over Michigan and Ohio, there simply are no TDI wagons. Anything still on the lot already has a deposit check tied to it and the few still on trucks are also accounted for. A few sedans apparently remain, but they seem likely to go fast as well.<br /> <br /> According to the salesman at Howard Cooper Volkswagen in Ann Arbor, the problem is that the 2009 model run has expired and Germany takes the month of August off. As a result, no diesel engines will be shipped to Mexico in August, so VW's Puebla plant can't assemble more cars to meet demand.<br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi-sportwagen/low/">2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Sportwagen</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/2009-jetta-tdi-sportwagen-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/2009-jetta-tdi-sportwagen-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/2009-jetta-tdi-sportwagen-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/2009-jetta-tdi-sportwagen-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/2009-jetta-tdi-sportwagen-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> <em><strong><small>Photos Copyright (C)2009 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/29/hoping-to-snag-a-jetta-tdi-with-your-clunker-cash-sorry-too-la/">Hoping to snag a Jetta TDI with your clunker cash? <br />We know the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/04/chinese-market-chevrolet-cruze-transformed-into-camaro-aping-bab/">Chinese love their Transformers</a> - or <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/22/we-are-all-bumblebee-beijing-transformers-fans-gather-to-celebr/">perhaps it's just Bumblebee</a>. To promote its new movie theater, a mall in China created its own Transformer out of a Volkswagen Jetta. The best part about the sculpture is that it hasn't been painted to look like Bumblebee, and it's been posed in a way that makes it look like it's either speed skating, or finishing up a dance number, or doing aerobics. Oh, and it has no head. But it's still cool, and you can check it out in the gallery of high-res photos below.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/chinese-jettabot/low/">Chinese Jettabot</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/chinese-jettabot/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/jettabot_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/chinese-jettabot/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/jettabot1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/chinese-jettabot/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/jettabot10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/chinese-jettabot/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/jettabot11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/chinese-jettabot/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/jettabot12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.chinacartimes.com/2009/07/12/jetta-transformer-ripping-up-beijing/">China Car Times</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/16/beijing-mall-builds-its-own-transformer-out-of-vw-jetta/">Beijing mall builds its own Transformer out of VW Jetta</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 15:28:00 EST. <br />General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Honda and everyone else may not think there is much of a market for mainstream diesel vehicles in the United States, but Volkswagen would beg to differ. Since it launched its new generation diesels last fall in the Jetta and earlier this year in the Touareg, they have been selling like hotcakes with June being its best month yet. Last month was the best sales month to date for the Sportwagen with 1,982 sales and a whopping 81% of those were equipped with the 2.0-liter TDI four-cylinder. <br /><br />Among the 8,431 Jetta sedans sold in June, 40% were diesel powered. And while the Touareg followed most other SUVs with a 41% overall decline to only 330 units in June, 29% of those had the 3.0-liter V6 TDI engine. Rabbit sales were down 69% in June, but a redesigned Golf is arriving in September, including a TDI - and if fuel prices keep climbing through the summer, it could see a huge sales spike as well. <br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/">First Drive: 2009 VW Jetta Sportwagen</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Volkswagen]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/01/diesels-grab-81-of-june-volkswagen-jetta-sportwagen-sales/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Diesel TDI model grabs 81% of VW Jetta Sportwagen sales in June</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/01/diesels-grab-81-of-june-volkswagen-jetta-sportwagen-sales/">Diesel TDI model grabs 81% of VW Jetta Sportwagen sales in June</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 01 Jul 2009 18:39:00 EST. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, cars with the company's 2.0-liter inline-four may have driveshaft cover plates that weren't manufactured properly, with the consequence that their screws may not be torqued correctly. If the screws back out, drivers may experience a knocking sound while in motion. In the extreme, the driveshaft could conceivably detach from the gearbox, which could cause all kinds of problems that might lead to a crash.<br /> <br />Owners of 2006-2009 Jettas with the 2.0-liter engine should contact their VW dealer for a free inspection and/or replacement of the screws. Affected parties can also contact Volkswagen directly at 1-800-822-8987 to learn more. The recall is set to officially begin on June 19, 2009. <br />Cynics might suggest that driving a Volkswagen is one way to have the Check Engine light's pictogram seared into your retinas. Rather than carp about the reputation, Mike Templeton of <a href="http://www.mk3love.com/">Mk3Love.com</a> has chosen to embrace, and even celebrate <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/miketempleton/2514703241/in/photostream/">his Jetta's</a> finicky nature. What better way, then, to declare your love for anything, than to have it etched indelibly on your body? Mike's got a good sense of humor about things, and took a plunge of unmitigated awesomeness by having a large, bright orange CEL buzzed onto his left bicep. But when the car's gone, will he regret it? Possibly. Although he'll always have fond memories of being stranded on the side of the road.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/cel-tattoo/low/">CEL Tattoo</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/cel-tattoo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/2515518414_d76aef5812_o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/cel-tattoo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/2514693723_4378cbb9da_o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/cel-tattoo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/2514693663_95c3d85c5d_o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/cel-tattoo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/2515518486_83a66f1fac_o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/cel-tattoo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/2514693579_df1aa44545_o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/miketempleton/2514693723/in/photostream/">Flickr</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/10/cel-tattoo-we-dont-wanna-know-where-to-plug-the-code-reader/">CEL Tattoo: We don't wanna know where to plug the code reader</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 10 Feb 2009 12:33:00 EST. The car as we know it is being redefined. Hybrids have reintroduced electrons to the driving experience, and the rumble, shake and shimmy of the internal combustion engine is being muffled and, in some cases, even silenced by cars like the Toyota Prius, 2011 Chevy Volt and Tesla Roadster. <br />
<br />
For us to continue harnessing the energy of combustion under our hoods, we need to go much further on a gallon of fuel. Enter Volkswagen and the diesel-powered passenger cars it's been selling in the U.S. since the late '70s, the latest of which is the 2009 Jetta TDI. Follow the jump to find out how VW's newest diesel fares against the electrified future of the automobile.<br />

<br />The state of California has the toughest vehicle emissions regulations in the world in its LEV II (and the corresponding national Tier 2 Bin 5) standards. Those rules treat all engine types the same regardless of what fuel they use. It doesn't matter if the engine runs on gasoline, diesel or cow dung, the emissions standards are the same. These rules are so tight that no manufacturer has been able to sell light-duty passenger vehicles powered by diesel engines in California and four other states for the last several years. That's all about to change beginning with last month's sales launch of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI. The Jetta TDI is the first new diesel-powered car to meet the tough T2B5 standards, and it's fitting that VW invited us out to the birthplace of these emissions regulations to drive it. We spent a day driving the Jetta TDI in and around Santa Monica to gauge whether it has the right balance of Fahrvergn&uuml;gen and low fuel consumption to be a viable alternative to cars like the Prius, Civic and Focus. Continue after the jump to find out more.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-volkswagen-jetta-tdi/low/">First Drive: 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-volkswagen-jetta-tdi/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/00_vwjettatdigarage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-volkswagen-jetta-tdi/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/01_vwjettatdigarage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-volkswagen-jetta-tdi/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/02_vwjettatdigarage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-volkswagen-jetta-tdi/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/03_vwjettatdigarage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-volkswagen-jetta-tdi/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/04_vwjettatdigarage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><strong><em><small>Photos Copyright (C)2008 Sam Abuelsamid / Weblogs, Inc.</small></em></strong><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/19/first-drive-2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>First Drive: 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/19/first-drive-2009-volkswagen-jetta-tdi/">First Drive: 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 19 Sep 2008 11:58:00 EST. The source of the consternation seems to be the highly anticipated <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/18/diesel-rush-begins-vw-jetta-tdi-now-being-delivered/">Jetta TDI</a>, which was just recently released in the U.S. market. Apparently, Volkswagen of America has gotten complaints that some dealers are adding a significant markup on the new and desirable model -- a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/search/?q=dealer+markup&amp;searchsubmit=">big problem </a>for many automakers when a new model makes its initial introduction. The dealers are eager to make some money on the new cars while VW is concerned that customers may just look elsewhere because they feel they're being treated unfairly. What's more, some VW dealers may not be all that excited by the new model as there aren't that many available quite yet.<br /><br />This is a situation that's frustrating for the dealers, VW and, most importantly, prospective customers. Volkswagen promises that the situation will improve, and we hope it does. If the clean diesel engine is truly capable of returning the kind of fuel mileage that VW says it can, the Jetta TDI sedan and Sportwagen may indeed offer an ideal alternative to gasoline-sipping hybrids, that is, if customers can put up with the buying process.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/01/vw-dealer-relationship-souring-over-jetta-tdi/">VW and its dealers butting heads over Jetta TDI?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 01 Sep 2008 16:57:00 EST. <br />A while back, my wife and I decided we would become parents. As soon as I saw the little wand TURN blue, I knew we'd need a bigger car. That was almost three years ago. We still need a bigger car. The problem with knowing a little bit about cars is the dizzying plethora of choices and the rumored promises of what's on the horizon. We didn't want the soccer-mom stigma of a minivan, or an SUV that drove like a truck and got 12 mpg. We wanted a car with room for two parents and one, possibly two, baby seats, and all the gear that comes with a growing family. I insisted the car have handling as near a sports car as possible, burn as little gas as possible and cost less than $25k. Oh, and is it too much to ask for style?<br /><br />My mom said, "You want it all, don't you? Just buy something." Which, of course, only incited me to a new level of stubbornness and a vow to find the perfect car. After more than TWO years shopping, our family car Holy Grail just might be German.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-sportwagen-se/low/">In the Autoblog Garage: 2009 Volkswagen Sportwagen SE</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-sportwagen-se/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/09vw_sportwagen_cjt---01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-sportwagen-se/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/09vw_sportwagen_cjt---02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-sportwagen-se/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/09vw_sportwagen_cjt---03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-sportwagen-se/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/09vw_sportwagen_cjt---04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-volkswagen-sportwagen-se/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/09vw_sportwagen_cjt---05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"><small>All photos Copyright (C)2008 Chris Tutor / Weblogs, Inc.</small></span></span><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/31/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-volkswagen-sportwagen-se/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Review: 2009 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen SE</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/31/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-volkswagen-sportwagen-se/">Review: 2009 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen SE</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 31 Jul 2008 12:27:00 EST. Perhaps buyers don't realize that these ain't the old Rabbit rattlers that cost three cents to run and would rack up a billion miles with five tanks of fuel. TDI maintenance costs are not insignificant, but the allure of inherent efficiency has folks putting their money where their mouths are and some dealers have sold out before even taking delivery. All in all, an auspicious start for the latest TDI Jetta. <br /><br />Not faring as well is the Tiguan, VW's smallest 'ute. While we find the Tiguan delightful to drive and well executed besides the smallish cargo area (Jetta Wagon FTW), the launch hasn't gone as swimmingly as Wolfsburg had hoped. Maybe the TDI powertrain could add some sales sparkle to the Tiguan. It would fit, being on basically the same platform as the Golf. <br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20080714/ANA06/807140333/1193">Automotive News</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/14/jetta-tdi-hotcakes-tiguan-not-so-much/">Jetta TDI = hotcakes, Tiguan, not so much</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 21:15:00 EST. More recently, VW has been indicating that the Jetta TDI is capable of up to 60mpg on the highway. The first of the new 50-state legal Jettas were recently spotted on their way to dealerships and now the EPA has published official mileage numbers. Unfortunately,wrong those numbers don't quite match up with what VW has been claiming. <br /><br />According to the <a href="http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm">official listing</a> at FuelEconomy.gov, the 6-speed manual 2009 VW Jetta TDI managed 30mpg on the city cycle and 41mpg on the highway cycle, making its combined number 34mpg. Now those numbers are certainly respectable and nothing to sneeze at, but they fall well short of VW's predictions. Nonetheless, the TDI rates 41.7-percent better than the 2.5L five cylinder and 36-percent better than the 2.0 TFSI four cylinder. The big question is what will a diesel Jetta do in the real world? According to VW spokesman Keith Price, Volkswagen's diesels typically do better in real world mileage than the EPA sticker values. VW, you know where to find our garage so we can judge for ourselves. <em>Thanks for the tip, Conner and Jason!</em><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/">First Drive: 2009 VW Jetta Sportwagen</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2009-vw-jetta-sportwagen/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/sportwagen-1280-13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="javascript:void(0);/*1211328552796*/">FuelEconomy.gov</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/21/official-epa-numbers-posted-for-the-09-jetta-tdi-30-41mpg/">Official EPA numbers posted for the '09 Jetta TDI - 30/41mpg</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 21 May 2008 09:27:00 EST. I had only done about four miles in the car and, already, the near-luxury interior and throaty exhaust had won me over.<br id="flu9" /><br id="hz1b" />But my wife was skeptical of a sedan's ability to handle the needs of our pack-rat family even if it did have 170 horses. So I drove the handsome little VW a couple of days more before turning it over to her for toddler-toting duty. <p>When I was in high school, my older brother had a Wolfsburg Edition VW Jetta. It had a 1.8 turbo, a knobby little shifter and BBS rims. It was pretty cool and I wasn't allowed to drive it. Several years have passed, and I'm still not allowed to drive my brother's Jetta Wolfsburg, but Volkswagen is unveiling a new one.</p>
<p>Replacing last year's 2.5-liter Wolfsburg model (shown), the new Wolfsburg Edition gets its 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque from Volkswagen's 2-liter turbo four and throws 17-inch alloys, leatherette seats (just when we thought vinyl upholstery had gone the way of the dodo) and the requisite special badging into the mix. Volkswagen of America will make 12,500 Wolfsburgs in silver, black, red or gray, with six speeds in either clutched ($20,875) or dual-clutched ($21,950) transmissions for a whole new generation of jealous kid brothers and their grubby little hands. </p>
<p>Press release after the jump.</p>

Modern diesel engines in many cases offer superior mileage to their hybrid counterparts and, with the latest exhaust particulate filters, are just as clean, too. </span>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-AU">Paul Eisenstein from Popular Mechanics (didn't he found The Car Connection?) managed to get an exclusive test-drive of one of Volkswagen's 2008 Jetta Diesel prototypes. The car is running VW's brand-spanking new clean diesel technology in the form of a 2.0L four cylinder common-rail diesel engine that will meet the Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions standards for all 50 US states. Check out the video after the jump. The VW guy talking is a bit preachy, but the new Jetta Diesel is an important product for the coming diesel revolution. Since the U.S. market is used to seeing diesel-powered Volkswagens running about, we doubt it will make as big a splash in the marketplace as Honda's Diesel Accord or GM's half-ton pickups with the new 4.5L V8 Diesel Duramax, but it's great to see this hybrid humbling little car back on sale after its short hiatus.</span></p>
