There are driving simulators and there are racing simulators. They tend to cross over, but what divides them are the types of cars and the types of roads used in the game. Drive racing cars on digitally recreated racing circuits and you're looking at a racing sim. Street cars on public roads (whether simulated or replicated) and you're playing a driving game. The Forza Motorsport franchise has always been more of a racing simulator than a driving game, but the minority of open roads that have appeared in the four iterations of the series so far are about to jump into their own game altogether with the launch of Forza Horizon.

Having made the initial announced back in March, Microsoft hand Turn 10 Studios have now released the box cover art and a single frame of in-game footage, both depicting the new SRT Viper on the open road. The cover, as you can see, shows a yellow Viper with black stripes speeding out of a mountain town, while the screenshot shows us a metallic Viper - like the one we saw at its unveiling in New York - on a desert highway in what looks like Carburator County from Pixar's Cars.

About a year and a half (if you can believe it) since the launch of Forza 4, the arrival of Forza Horizon will surely come as welcome and eagerly anticipated by the legions of racing and gaming fans that have enjoyed the various iterations of the franchise until now. All we know about its release is that it's coming sometime in the fall, but with the E3 gaming convention just a couple of weeks away, we should have more to bring you soon, so watch this space.

Forza Horizon coming this fall with hot Viper action on the open road originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 18 May 2012 17:30:00 EST. Automation, the game that allows players to build their own car company from the ground up, has made a big step forward by releasing a engine-builder demo. Those who have already pre-ordered the game can download a preview of the designer right now by heading over to the Camshaft Software site, while the rest of the world gets to wait until April 22. So far, the glimpse is limited to four-cylinder applications, though players can tweak nearly every aspect of the four-pot's design. Block, crank and head material are all up for grabs as are intake, exhaust and fuel design and cam profile.

The company was kind enough to slide us an early copy of the demo filled with tutorial videos explaining the intricacies of each engine system. While incredibly involved, the program seems to be a great way to expand one's knowledge by eeking ever-better horsepower out of an engine. Though all of the options can be a bit overwhelming, even for those of us with grease under our fingernails, Automation offers clear explanations on each variable. Hit the jump for a quick video and the press release, and be sure to check out the game's site on the 22nd for your own free demo.
Continue reading Automation engine design demo up and running

Automation engine design demo up and running originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 Apr 2012 11:29:00 EST.
The original Grand Theft Auto video game debuted for the Playstation in 1997, but it wasn't until the power of the Playstation 2 arrived that we were introduced to the sandbox-style of gameplay that has made the GTA series so iconic. Part of what has made that sandbox style so appealing is the ability to jack any vehicle in the game and go joyriding across its ever expanding locales.

The last full-fledged GTA was the fourth installment that came out in 2008. It's been a long time coming, but next year the game's developers at Rockstar North will debut Grand Theft Auto V, which sets itself in a fictional and stylized version of the Los Angeles and Hollywood areas of California. The story is set around a father who moves to the area to start a new life, but as usual, his old one catches up with him.

Rockstar North debuted the game's first trailer today, and as usual, the selection of vehicles to steal, drive and use as tools for vehicular manslaughter are featured front and center. Check it out for yourself after the jump.
Continue reading Grand Theft Auto V trailer premieres online

Grand Theft Auto V trailer premieres online originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 02 Nov 2011 19:59:00 EST.
Disney is looking to give younger children an excuse other than Angry Birds to play with their parents' Apple iPad. The company's new AppMates toys feature small Cars 2 characters with unique sensors inside them. Download a free application, place the toys on the screen, and kids can drive around a virtual interpretation of Radiator Springs. There are even games and missions to complete for older tikes. Each set comes with two characters for $19.99, and with the potential for endless updates to the Radiator Springs universe, chances are good that kids won't get bored of the game too quickly.

Of course, the only question is, who wants to hand over their tablet to their child aged four to nine? Fortunately, Disney has thought of that, too, and will release a well-padded Cars 2-themed iPad case later down the line. That little piece of kit will set you back a heady $49, but that's considerably less than the cost of a brand-new iPad. Hit the jump to take a look at a video of the AppMates in action.
Continue reading Disney AppMates creates interactive iPad experience with Pixar's CARS

Disney AppMates creates interactive iPad experience with Pixar's CARS originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Sep 2011 10:30:00 EST.
Not everyone can compete in the Race of Champions. You have to be, you know, an actual champion of something. (That something being a professional racing series of some sort.) But us ordinary Joes can do the next best thing: pretend like we're champions while playing with our smartphones.

The organizers of the annual event, which brings a wide variety of racing talent together each year for head-to-head competition, is launching its own video game for iOS and Android devices. The game features various track layouts from past runnings of the RoC, and benefits from the input of professional racing drivers like rally veteran Michele Moutan and endurance and rally champion Marc Duez.

It's being developed by Hungarian studio Invictus, and is set to launch in app stores online later in October ahead of this year's race scheduled for December 3-4 in Düsseldorf. Organizers have also recently announced that 2009 Formula One world champion Jenson Button, WTCC vet Andy Priaulx and DTM champ Mattias Ekstrom have signed on to join Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher for the event, and that the 270-horsepower Skoda Fabia S2000 rally car will one of the cars they'll be driving there come December.
Continue reading Race of Champions coming to a smartphone near you

Race of Champions coming to a smartphone near you originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Sep 2011 08:00:00 EST. Everyone reading this right now has, at one time or another, felt they could do a better job designing a car than the folks in charge. You would pick up a different engine, powertrain layout, body style or even come up with a better name than any executive. Well, Camshaft Software plans to let you prove it... virtually.

Camshaft Software is a company formed by Andrew Lamb and Caswal Parker, two car enthusiasts who also happen to be skilled programmers and 3D artists. They are hard at work on a new computer game called Automation, which pits you as the main person in charge of a brand new manufacturer.

Your company gets underway in post-war 1946, and your mission is to develop automobiles from the ground up. This means engine, chassis, suspension, body style and all other details that go into producing vehicle. Basically, this is your chance to build the car that you feel best suits a variety of markets, all the while dealing with changing customer demands and new technology.

The entire concept sounds incredibly engrossing, and after watching a demo video, we're sure that Automation will kill all of our productivity. Still, the game isn't here yet, and the developers need a bit of help to bring it to market. They've turned to RocketHub.com, and their goal is to collect $100,000. As of this writing, they've managed to snag just 5 percent of their target. There is still plenty of time left to help, however, and donation amounts are available from as low as $5 and all the way up to $10,000. Click past the jump to check out the demo video, and head over to RocketHub if you feel like helping out.
Continue reading Automation will let you build the car of your dreams... virtually

Automation will let you build the car of your dreams... virtually originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 07 Sep 2011 19:28:00 EST.
Being a video game designer sounds like fun. And when the video game you're designing involves recreating famous racetracks from around the world, you're definitely having more fun than the average cubicle-dweller.

The developers at Turn 10 Studios have to do exactly that for the upcoming Forza 4 video game. It's an interesting process, and Turn 10 has released a video showing us how it's done. It highlights the nearly three-mile-long Hockenheim circuit in Germany, which features 13 turns and plays host to both the German Grand Prix and DTM events.

We won't spoil the track-creation magic for you. Instead, click past the jump and let Turn 10 demonstrate how it happens.
Continue reading Forza Motorsport 4 shows the making of its Hockenheim track

Forza Motorsport 4 shows the making of its Hockenheim track originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 24 Aug 2011 19:29:00 EST.
One of the most complex parts of a modern Formula One car is its steering wheel, which can be worth tens of thousands of dollars on its own and packing all the controls you'd expect to find on a dashboard right onto the wheel itself. Ferrari took a similar approach with the steering wheel on the 458 Italia, moving the starter button, chassis mode dial, windshield wiper controls, headlights, turning indicators... everything right onto the face of the wheel, while removing the usual stalks to allow for unimpeded access to the oversize shift paddles.

The result is a thorough rethink of one of the automobile's most basic components, though some have derided it as too complex. And if you're one of those who thought the end result looks more like a video game controller than a car's steering wheel, you're not alone: feast your eyes on the latest device from Thrustmaster.

Designed as a controller for driving and racing games on the Microsoft xBox 360, the Ferrari 458 replica wheel is flush with all the functions you'd need for playing Forza 4 or the latest Need for Speed game the way it ought to be played. Coming this October for less than $90, it's considerably more affordable than some of Fanatec's offerings, and could be just the thing to keep us from getting any work done. Check it out in the gallery and follow the jump for the full press release.
Continue reading Ferrari 458 steering wheel replicated as Xbox 360 controller

Ferrari 458 steering wheel replicated as Xbox 360 controller originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 09:01:00 EST. The Top Gear presenter has reportedly joined forces with Turn 10 Studios to lend his voice and automotive knowledge to the company's upcoming Forza 4 video game.

There's a portion of Forza 4 called AutoVista, which is an in-game showroom where players can examine cars in great detail. Clarkson provides commentary in this area of the game, giving players his voiced-over viewpoint on specific cars.

We can only hope and assume that the commentary will include some of Jezza's trademark catchphrases like "...in the world." Regardless, adding Clarkson only rounds out the amount of Top Gear goodies found in the new game, all of which should be enough to have at least a few Sony PS3 owners considering making the switch to Microsoft's Xbox 360.
Jeremy Clarkson to narrate Forza 4 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 28 Jul 2011 14:01:00 EST.
If you're a fan of racing video games, you might have purchased a copy of DiRT 3. The game features a variety of machines and tracks, yet some might still want more. Codemasters aims to please with its latest downloadable content add-on: the Monte Carlo Track Pack.

The Monte Carlo pack will cost Xbox users 800 Microsoft points. PS3 users need to shell out $9.99. Either way, that buys you eight new rally stages filled with hairy, snow-covered mountain passes in the Alps, including the legendary Col de Turini.

We don't know when tilt-shift video will be old and busted, but it isn't today. Ken Block's recent busting-through-boxes DiRT 3 Gymkhana at the Battersea power station rocked hard enough in full scale. It looks even cooler - or perhaps it's just wackier and funnier - shot with a tilt-shift lens so that it looks like a tiny Ken Block is piloting a tiny Escort knocking over tiny boxes. The only thing stranger than the images is the music, which kept us wondering when the Harajuku girls were going to appear. They don't, but the still-awesome Harajuku-free video is after the jump.
Continue reading Ken Block Gymkhana, tilt-shift edition

Ken Block Gymkhana, tilt-shift edition originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 18 Jun 2011 20:02:00 EST.
We can never get enough of Ken Block's Gymkhana, and we're pretty sure that many of you feel the same way. Lucky for us, Block and Codemasters have the launch of DiRT 3 to look forward to, making a new drift video a no-brainer.

Watch Block as he hops behind the wheel of the Ford Focus Rally car at London's Battersea Power Station, the same place he took a bikini model from Zoo Magazine for a ride. As always, Block traverses some keenly placed obstacles whilst drifting and doing donuts all the way. As a special sendoff to DiRT 3, Block also drifts through a series of stacked DiRT 3 boxes, which we hope aren't filled with copies of the $59 game.

Hit the jump to watch the slide-master do his thing. This may not be Block's best work, but it isn't often that we actually enjoy being bombarded with advertising.
Continue reading Ken Block busting through boxes in DiRT 3 promo

Ken Block busting through boxes in DiRT 3 promo originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 19 May 2011 19:58:00 EST.
The launch of DiRT 3 is nearly here. You can pick up a copy of the Gymkhana-friendly game on May 24th, but since we're not quite there yet, Codemasters is more than happy to show off this new video, tantalizing us until the day we can finally plunk down cash for our very own copy.

Like we've seen in the past, this latest clip features a virtual Ken Block sliding his perfectly pixelated Ford Fiesta through a make-shift course. This time around, however, Block is joined by Tanner Foust and his equally impressive Rallycross-ready Fiesta.

The last time these two met in real life, Foust wound up beating Block at his own game. Now he's in Block's game, and we can't wait to take each car out for a few (thousand) laps of virtual tire destruction. Click past the jump to watch the clip.
Continue reading Ken Block battles Tanner Foust in DiRT 3 Gymkhana battle

Ken Block battles Tanner Foust in DiRT 3 Gymkhana battle originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 12 May 2011 14:58:00 EST.
Get excited, kids. The Driver franchise is back with a new chapter, and this time the story takes the damage to San Francisco. Our good friends over at Joystiq got to spend a little time behind the controller of the game ahead of its launch. The storyline picks up after the conclusion of Driv3r, which means we're done playing around in the late '70s. Ubisoft Reflections has gone through the trouble of rendering a fair portion of down town, Marin County, East Bay and Treasure Island for our tormenting pleasure, though according to Joystiq, that's not the most interesting part of the gameplay.

Early in the action, our hero Tanner winds up in a coma and spends the rest of the story line haunting San Francisco and possessing random drivers to track down the infamous Jericho. Apparently players can snap up any vehicle they see simply by lining up a reticle and pressing a button. It sounds a little shaky to us, but that doesn't mean we won't light a few hours of our life on fire by flopping down on the couch with Driver: San Fracisco when it lands this August. Hit the jump for a video.

Cars 2 is coming to theaters everywhere on June 24, and if we're honest, we're pretty stoked. The original Cars movie was, after all, a great flick with an all-car cast. And thanks to the popularity of the first Cars movie, Disney and Pixar plan to make a Mater-load of cash with this second round, and not just on the movie itself.

Disney Pixar is (predictably) working on the video game Cars 2: Spies Wanted, which will reportedly become available in July for the Sony PlayStation 3, XBOX 360, Nintendo Wii and DS. And this time, it looks like Lightning McQueen and the gang won't be maxing and relaxing in secluded Radiator Springs.

Judging by the post-jump trailer, there appear to be bad guys, guns and rockets. We're typically not all that thrilled about games that are based on a movie (because they usually aren't that great), but since we're always fans of games that involve driving, we may be willing to give this one a shot. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

If Gran Turismo 5 has turned a bit stale for you, never fear. The crew behind the Motorstorm franchise has just what you need to wet your racing videogame whistle in the form of the new Motorstorm Apocalypse. The game takes all of the fender-bashing glory of the classics into a city in the throes of collapse. Players will not only have to contend with the other racers, but they'll have to square off against an environment that's hell-bent on destruction as well. It's like Mad Max on steroids.

Programmers have thrown in a heap of new vehicle classes on top of old favorites, and the single-player campaign brings a new level of story-telling to the party for the first time. Additionally, new online multiplayer content allows you to collect experience points to build your favorite racing machine, collect medals to show off and to unlock new vehicle perks to help you gain an edge over the rest of the field.

Sign us up.

You can check out a full trailer for the game after the jump as well as a few developer journals that take a closer look at both the multiplayer and the single player action. We think you won't be disappointed.

Need for Speed: Shift 2 Unleashed will be arriving in stores on March 29th, and to tie all you gamers over until then, the NFS team has put together a video highlighting the features that may make it a must-have for racing-sim fans. Whether you prefer smoothly linking corners or destroying rubber in a fit of sideways shenanigans, Shift 2 Unleashed has got you covered.

The drifting aspect of the game was locked down with the help of Vaughn Gittin Jr. and his 2011 Ford Mustang GT Formula Drift racer. The game features a unique Helmet Cam view, which places the driver's "eyes" where they would go in real life. A road racer will look towards the apex of a turn but a drifter will stare out the side window - both of these styles are accounted for in the game, and the result looks pretty amazing.

If you jumped right into the Test Drive Unlimited 2 world, you may have been disappointed to find a slew of bugs and server issues. Atari and Eden Games have been working hard to rectify that situation. A new update has been made available and it includes a variety of fixes, as well as a thank-you bonus item. The first batch of downloadable content for TDU2 thrown in the mix for free.

Called the Exploration DLC Pack, the downloadable add-on features new wrecks to find. The two new wrecks, once found, will put a rally-version Lancia Stratos and 1969 Dodge Charger in your garage (or garages, if you are progressing through game more quickly).

In addition to the extra vehicles, this update addresses the following issues:

 Casino performance has been improved

 Log-in time has been improved

Game is more stable across the board

Saved games are no longer corrupted

 Friend lists are now populated

 Invites work correctly

 Clubs are now online

It's clear that Eden Games and Atari have been listening to the masses, and are working hard to provide an enjoyable gaming experience. The update is being provided to PC users first, then it will filter over for console gamers.

We hate to be the ones to tell you this, but chances are pretty slim that you'll ever get the opportunity to slide behind the wheel of the new Pagani Huayra. Blame it on the numbers. Pagani is only planning on cranking out so many Huayra models, and there just so happens to be a shave under 7 billion people on the planet. Throw in the fact that each of the 700-horsepower Italian exotics will carry a price tag of near $1.35 million and the odds start to look even more bleak.

Hey, at least you're in good company. We're sitting in the exact same boat as you.

Fortunately for all of us, then, the Need for Speed franchise has come to our rescue. While we may not be able to find out in person just how fast 740 pound-feet of torque can move a 3,000 pound supercar, we will get a shot at flinging the carbon-fiber creation down a few virtual streets in Shift 2 Unleashed. In fact, the game is the only racing outlet to feature the newest addition to the Pagani family, so if you want to play with this bad boy, you're going to have to pick up the latest addition to the Need for Speed library. Hit the jump for a quick trailer.

For pure, unadulterated rally action from the comfort of your living room, there's nothing quite like DiRT. The video game franchise from Codemasters is about as realistic as they come, and now they've got their third installment coming in the form of DiRT 3.

Not only is the game promised to be more accurate in its execution and feel, but it incorporates a whole new slew of features. There are more cars and more stages, of course, but that's hardly the end of it: DiRT 3 also incorporates two new kinds of rally action - Gymkhana and hillclimb. The former, of course, was popularized by Ken Block who's now crossed over to professional rally competition, while the latter brings events like Pikes Peak into the fold to really get that dirt kicking. But don't take our word for it, follow the jump to watch the video preview from G4, including an interview with the studio's lead game developer and gameplay footage from what is shaping up as the new benchmark in rally action.
