After an eight-year buildup, the Veritas RS III has finally slithered into series production in Grafschaft-Gelsdorf, Germany. Just like the Dutch firm Spyker, Vermot AG has resurrected the post-war German racing marque that sold a few road-going versions of their racers to a handful of lucky enthusiasts. Now, the new company is doing less racing and more street scorching, and the RS III is its first foray into the world of production cars.

In Monterey this past August, we caught our first glimpse of the finally-ready-for-production Veritas RS III. With its newly revised front end (now with 50 percent more serpent!) it looks even more like a BMW Z8 on acid. Which is totally appropriate, because this retro rocketsled is powered by the same 5.0-liter V10 engine found in the M5 supersedan. With 500 hp propelling a scant 2,400 pounds, the 30 insane lucky folks who plunk down a million bucks for one of these can look forward to a 0-100km/h dash of just 3.2 seconds and a top speed of more than 215 MPH.

That's Enzo-like performance for an Enzo-like price, but it offers ten times the exclusivity -- not to mention Veritas started operating the same year as Enzo Ferrari in 1947. The difference is that this serpent lay dormant for almost 50 years, getting ready to strike. We don't know many people with half a million bucks lying around these days, but for those who've got the cash to burn, reports have surfaced on the official price of the Veritas RS III. And at €342,000 ($487,000 by today's rates), it ain't cheap.

For that much cash you get just one seat - with no roof, mind you, and not much of a windscreen to speak of - but what a seat it is. You're strapped into a retro rocket sled behind the BMW M division's 5-liter V10 with 500 horsepower on tap. A more powerful 620-horsepower version is also said to be available, which would presumably ratchet the price up even higher. Only 30 examples are to be made, and the sticker price also gives us a reference point for the upcoming fixed-roof version and reported aircraft-engined sport-ute that the company is said to be working on. Veritas isn't showing any signs of slowing down. Nor should it, with a lightweight supercar packing 500 horsepower or more. The niche automaker just recently unveiled the final production version of its open-top RSIII roadster at the Salon Privé in London, but according to the latest reports, the German upstart is not about to stop there.

The RSIII roadster is powered by an uprated V10 pulled from the BMW M5/M6, and is available in either 500 or 620-horsepower specifications. Veritas will only build 30 examples, but an additional 30 coupes are planned as well, with an eye on "markets like the Middle East, where they need air conditioning." And the plot thickens even further with word that Veritas is reportedly working on a sport-utility as well. Little details are known on the SUV, but Veritas reportedly wants to cradle a small aircraft engine in a carbon fiber body for a package that promises to give Spyker's long-time-coming D12 Peking-to-Paris SSUV a run for its money.

You remember the Veritas RS III? The open-cockpit supercar is a revival of the 40's-era BMW racing team, spearheaded by a crew of enthusiasts dedicated to making the most visceral, back-to-basics driving machine known to man. With a choice of two BMW M-sourced powertrains - 480hp V8 or 600hp V10 - the Veritas hits 60 mph from a standstill in the three-second range en route to a top speed over 200 mph with either engine and no electronic aids. With a list price starting around $375,000, only 50 examples will be produced, and the first one has finally arrived. After initially spotting a prototype at the Nürburgring, followed by details a year ago and more details last summer, the blitzschnell supercar is finally ready for its close-up and it's set to take place in London this July.

Alongside several UK debuts, the Veritas RS III will be headlining this year's London Salon Privé, an exclusive supercar show at the Hurlingham country club. Other noteworthy dream cars on the docket include the Morgan Aero Super Sport and Aston Martin One-77, two British supercars making their UK debuts. Aston will also roll out its V12 Vantage and DBS Volante for the home crowd, while the Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S and Maybach Zeppelin will be on hand for the first time in the UK as well. The show takes place from July 22-24, with tickets starting at a staggering £125 for a one-day entrance pass. Think that's a little steep? Vermot AG, the company behind the production version of the Veritas RS III, has finally released the official details on its revival of the iconic German racer from the '40s. The Veritas RS III will tip the scales at just under 2,400 pounds and is made up of a tubular frame and a carbon/Kevlar body. Although Vermot designed the RS III as a race car for the modern age, it doesn't use any of the electronic aids found on other track-day rides - ABS and stability control aren't available.

What is available is a choice of two drivetrains: a BMW-sourced, 600 hp 5.0-liter V10 mated to a sequential transmission or a 480 hp, 5.0-liter V8 equipped with a manual gearbox. Vermot estimates that the V10 will run to 62 in 3.2 seconds, while the V8 can do the deed in 3.6 seconds. Top speed is predicted at 215 mph and 204 mph, respectively.

Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but with an independent suspension, Ohlins shocks, TRW Racing 6-pot brakes, Brabham wheels sized 20x10.5 in front and 20x12.5 in the rear, don't expect it to come cheap.

Regular readers will recall that about a month ago, our man Chris Tutor grabbed a photo of a mysterious car standing at the gates of the vaunted Nurburgring Nordschleiffe. We all hazarded our guesses, but it was our astute reader PandaBeat who identified it as the Veritas RS3, a concept roadster that appeared in 2001. After that we got some better photos and even a video of the concept car at the 'Ring, and now some more juicy details have emerged as well.

Sources suggest that the Veritas RS III - conceived and executed by a small team of seven enthusiasts who resuscitated the name of Germany's first grand prix race team, spun off from BMW - will begin production at the end of this year at a rate of 50 examples per year. Instead of the BMW V12 in the concept, the production version is tipped to carry a tuned version of BMW's celebrated 5.0-liter V10 tuned to develop 600 horsepower. With that much power in a carbon-kevlar construction and minimal bodywork, we doubt the Veritas RS III will have any trouble meeting its projected 0-62 time of 3.2 seconds, but your neck muscles had better be as strong as an F1 driver's or an NFL linebacker's to withstand the wind forces slapping against your helmet at 216 mph.
