Verizon has placed what is likely the largest order to date for Chevrolet Silverado hybrid pickup trucks to add to its service vehicle fleet. A total of 576 of the two-mode hybrid trucks will be used by Verizon technicians for service calls in urban areas around the country. The Silverado and its GMC twin, the Sierra are the only production hybrid pickup trucks available and although they are very fuel efficient at 21 miles per gallon city and 22 mpg highway, they have not sold well.

The Daimler-built transmissions are used in the Mercedes-Benz ML450 and BMW X6 hybrids. Inside of each of those transmissions are two electric motor/generators which are produced by former GM parts division Remy International.

Next week at the New York Auto Show, we'll be getting our first up close look at a German production vehicle with the two-mode hybrid system. Among the vehicles that Mercedes Benz will publicly show for the first time is the production ML450 hybrid. The ML450 uses a new version of the two-mode hybrid system co-developed with General Motors, Chrysler, and BMW. Mercedes will be manufacturing the new smaller two-mode transmissions that it will use as well as supplying them to BMW for the upcoming X
