11Verizon acquires 576 Chevrolet Silverado hybrids

Verizon has placed what is likely the largest order to date for Chevrolet Silverado hybrid pickup trucks to add to its service vehicle fleet. A total of 576 of the two-mode hybrid trucks will be used by Verizon technicians for service calls in urban areas around the country. The Silverado and its GMC twin, the Sierra are the only production hybrid pickup trucks available and although they are very fuel efficient at 21 miles per gallon city and 22 mpg highway, they have not sold well.

AutoblogGreen had a chance to chat with Micky Bly, executive directory of hybrid vehicle development and batteries at General Motors the evening before the opening of the 2010 Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress. We asked Micky about GM's plans for hybrid vehicles going forward. While its former partners Daimler, Chrysler and BMW all seem to be backing away from the two-mode hybrid system, GM remains fully committed to the technology.

If a production schedule posted at Allpar is to be believed, Chrysler will kick off production of the new Ram 1500 hybrid on November 16, 2010. Daimler is now building its own version of the two-mode hybrid transmissions that were co-developed with General Motors and BMW. The Daimler-built transmissions are used in the Mercedes-Benz ML450 and BMW X6 hybrids. Inside of each of those transmissions are two electric motor/generators which are produced by former GM parts division Remy International.

According to The Detroit News, the big joint development program formed several years ago between General Motors, Daimler, Chrysler and BMW to develop a two-mode hybrid system for light duty vehicles is over.
