Turkey's Onuk Sazan - Click above for high-res image gallery

Need a reason to support Turkey's bid to become part of the European Union? Look no further than the Onuk Sazan, a brand-new sports car that depending on the engine might just slide its way into supercar territory. The Sazan was designed and built by a certain Dr. Onuk, who lost his son Kaan in a car accident. Sazan is a nickname for Kaan. Hence, the Onuk Sazan. Similar to Enzo and Dino Ferrari -only, well... you know.

What makes an Onuk Kazan? Well, in base trim you're apparently talking about a 2,000-pound rear-wheel drive sportster that's powered by a turbocharged Nissan VQ V6 that's good for about 450 horsepower. Sounds great to us. However, what if for a little weight penalty you could step up to General Motors' LS7? That would net you about 512 hp, 480 lb-ft of twist and just 2,200 pounds of vehicle to move around. Now we're talking. Okay, but how much? This is the bad news: €200,000, or about $300,000. That seems radically high to us, but we're not up on our Turkish financial analysis.

Knowing nothing else about the Sazan, all we can comment on are its looks, which for a bespoke sports car from a non-sports car making country aren't bad. The front has a quite a bit of TVR going on, but also some Ferrari F430 (air intakes) and Pagani Zonda (glass canopy). The rear is the Sazan's best angle, with more TVR evident, but in an organic, non-derivative way. The Sazan's weakest angle is when the car is viewed from the side. And really, the Spyker-looking profile isn't so terrible, but the wheels look rather dated. But that's an easy fix!

Before we go, we'd be derelict in our car scribin' duties not to mention Turkey's first sports car, the Anadol STC-16. Quite a looker, actually, the STC-16 was powered by a 1.6-liter Ford Mexico motor found in both the Cortina and Capri. While small and slow by contemporary standards, the STC-16 was enough of a runner to compete with the likes of the Datsun 240Z and was known at home in Turkey as "Süper Türk Canavarı" (Super Turkish Monster)! According to our tipster, Onuk feels there is a link between the historic Anadol STC-16 and the new Sazan. We'll wait and see. A big ol' tip of the AB fez to Ozcan Ozkaya!

Gallery: Onuk Sazan

[Sources: Otoplato.com; TRTuning.com; Anadol STC-16.com]
Turkish Onuk Sazan is like Ferrari Dino, only without pedigree originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 16:56:00 EST.
2010 Ford Transit Connect - Click above for high-res image gallery

The law of unintended consequences is a funny one. Take the chicken tax. Back in the 1960s, West Germany imposed high tariffs on American grown chicken. President Johnson - a man you would not want to mess with - fought back by imposing high import tariffs on foreign made trucks and commercial vans. This is one of the reasons why there are no full-size German pickup trucks. It's also why German egg yolks are orange while ours are yellow (grass fed chicken vs. corn fed chicken), but that's another story. The only reason we have the Toyota Tundra and the Nissan Titan is because those companies decided to make them here in the U.S. Otherwise they'd be too expensive. This poses a real problem if you're Ford and you want to bring in your made-in-Turkey Transit Connect van.

How to circumvent the law? There's all sorts of creative ways. Up until just recently, Chrysler's been selling Sprinter vans here in the States by shipping them unassembled to a factory in South Carolina where the vans are reconstituted and shipped to dealers. Ford's taking a slightly different approach. They actually ship the Transit Connects here with the vans classified as wagons. Then, once they reach a processing facility in Baltimore, they are transformed into cargo vans, totally side-stepping the Chicken Tax. Smart, huh?

The process of transforming a passenger "wagon" into a cargo van works like this. The rear windows are removed and replaced by a sheet of metal that's quick cured in place. The rear seats and seat belts are then removed and a new floorboard is screwed into place. Voila - five minutes after they start as five-passenger wagons, Ford has a bunch of two-seater panel vans. The seats are then shredded and the material is used as land fill cover. No word on what happens to the glass. Long story short, take that chicken tax!

Gallery: First Drive: 2010 Ford Transit Connect

[Source: WSJ]
REPORT: Ford Transit Connect arriving in U.S. with full interiors that get stripped to comply with "Chicken Law" originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 Sep 2009 14:28:00 EST.
Renault has just announced a new compact mid-size sedan called the Fluence for its Turkish, Russian, and Romanian markets. The Fluence is sized to slot in between the usual C- and D-segment offerings, making it a bit larger than the Megane and smaller than the Laguna. The front-wheel drive four door is apparently based on the platform of the Renault Samsung SM3 which is built and sold in South Korea.

For its initial markets, the Fluence gets a range of seven four-cylinder engines, including five diesels º all of which comply with the Euro-V emissions standards. The diesels range from 85- to 110-horsepower, and they all emit less than 119 g/km of carbon dioxide, which makes them eligible for registration discounts and congestion charge exemptions in place where that is relevant. The Fluence will be built at a Renault factory in Bursa, Tur

All of this news could all be relevant for American consumers if Roger Penske manages to close a deal with Renault to have Samsung supply cars for Saturn. If that comes to pass, we could conceivably see a variant of this car show up at Saturn dealers in the States in the next few years. Check out the press release after the jump and the high-res gallery below.

Gallery: 2010 Renault Fluence

[Source: Renault]
Continue reading New Renault Fluence compact sedan for Turkey, Russia, Romania... is Saturn next?

New Renault Fluence compact sedan for Turkey, Russia, Romania... is Saturn next? originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 31 Aug 2009 11:29:00 EST. With the established teams still threatening to walk and new teams lining up by the dozen, nothing could have better characterized Formula One's transition from old to new better than the move from the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks ago to the Turkish Grand Prix this weekend. While the Monaco race - held on the streets of Monte Carlo, with its close proximities and timeless seaside city-scape - remains one of the sport's oldest venues, the race in Turkey - at the new-school Istanbul Park Circuit, characterized by wide run-offs and state-of-the-art accommodations - is one of its youngest.

First held in 2005, the Turkish Grand Prix has been won the past three years running by the same driver: Ferrari's Felipe Massa, the young Brazilian who narrowly lost out on the driver's crown last year to Lewis Hamilton. Surely Ferrari's golden boy was eager to extend his domination at the Ottoman autodrom, but would he and his Maranello squad be able to translate the marked improvement which they displayed in Monte Carlo just a fortnight ago into a return to winning form in Istanbul?
Every once in a while there comes along a story that's so incredible you really have to see it to believe it. Fortunately, the magic of the intertubes and some newfangled site called YouTube makes that possible with news of a potentially horrifying crash in Turkey.

Local trucker Cem Tokac was standing in the truck yard when a tractor-trailer passed beside him, evidently oblivious to the train about to T-bone the double truck right into the blindsided bystander. The train strikes the truck, the truck strikes Tokac and he looks like he's down for the count, but amazingly escapes with only relatively minor cuts and bruises from what could easily have been a fatal incident. The event was caught on two closed-circuit television cameras on site, so follow the jump to watch the video and see for yourself.

[Source: Inquisitr via Jalopnik]
Continue reading VIDEO: Turkish man miraculously survives train-truck-pedestrian collision

VIDEO: Turkish man miraculously survives train-truck-pedestrian collision originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 19:31:00 EST. The Renault Logan has done well in Russia and Romania, which has prodded this interest and action from PSA. The new five-passenger vehicle will be assembled in Turkey or Poland and sold in eastern and central Europe, Russia, Turkey, and North Africa wearing both Citroen and Peugeot badging. If successful, sales would also expand to include China and South America. Even if the vehicle sells well, PSA/Peugeot-Citroen CEO Christian Streiff maintains there are no plans to sell the new car in western Europe - regardless of Renault's strategy.

Still in the prototyping phase, the creators of the Etox Zafer hope to eventually build up to 500 units a year but plan a more modest run of just 20 cars/year initially. Looking similar to cars built by the UK's TVR, the Zafer was designed over a period of six months and this latest prototype involved the work of over 46 engineers.

The story behind the Zafer is not too dissimilar a tale from Ferruccio Lamborghini starting his own sports car label after being insulted by Enzo Ferrari. In the case of the Etox, its founder Ercan Malkoç set about building his own car company after being denied the chance to examine a Lamborghini up close.

When, and if, it finally enters production, the Zafer will be available with a trio of engine options starting with a 125-hp 1.5L diesel engine, followed by 220-hp diesel 3.0L V6 and a 272-hp petrol 3.0L for a flagship model.

[Source: EtoxZafer.com via Winding Road]

Gallery: Etox Zafer I

Turkey makes sports cars?
When Bentley wants to open a new showroom, they don't do it by half measures. In honor of Istanbul, Turkey's first Bentley dealer on the Bosporus, the marque is putting on a 2,500-mile rally from London to Turkey. Called the Bentley Calista Rally -- because it ends at the Calista Luxury Resort in Belek -- seven Bentley Speed Sixes and seven Bentley 4.5-liters will make the trek across The Continent.

The participants are invited members of the Benjafield's Racing Club, which was founded by Bentley Boy Dudley Benjafield. Back when W.O. Bentley was making what Ettore Bugatti called "the world's fastest lorries," the group of men who were winning races like the 24 Hours of LeMans and beating trains from Calais to London were called the Bentley Boys. In that spirit and in their honor, the ten-country Calista Rally will combine some of the world's most wonderful engines with some of Europe's most wonderful destinations. We're sure Walter Owen would be proud.

It seems that the FIA wanted it to go un-noticed, but the motorsport governing authority has let Turkey get away without even paying the slap on the wrist they imposed in the first place.

For those who may not recall, at last year's Turkish Grand Prix, the leader of Turkish-occupied Cyprus was introduced to give the trophy to race winner Felipe Massa in a deliberate politicization of the motorsport competition. Turkey's dominion over Cyprus is not internationally recognized, and the FIA warned of fire and brimstone. Threatening to take away not only the Turkish Grand Prix but also possibly to revoke Turkey's WRC rally stage and blacklisting the entire country from holding any FIA-sanctioned races, the sanctioning body declared that motor racing was not to be manipulated towards political ends. Following a tribunal that considered the issue, the FIA instead imposed a relatively minor $5 million fine and let Turkey keep its races.

Half the fine was paid by the race promoters, who were subsequently dismissed from responsibility for organizing the grand prix, which passed into the hands of Bernie Ecclestone's Formula One Management. The remaining $2.5 million was to be paid by the Turkish motor sports federation TOSFED, but after pleading with the FIA and explaining that the fine would send them into bankruptcy, the governing body let them off without paying.

Mercy is a laudable attribute, but by failing to hold TOSFED to any punishment whatsoever, the FIA is leaving the door open to further manipulation of motor racing by others in the future.

Called the Linea, the sedan looks larger than a Euro Focus four-door, about the size of a Pontiac G6. It's built, however, off of the smaller Grande Punto's platform with a half meter extra in length thanks to a longer wheelbase and a more generous rear overhang that contributes to a 17.65 cubic foot trunk. The car will debut at the Instanbul Motor Show early next month, which is fitting since it was developed through a joint venture between Fiat and TOFAS, the Turkish Automotive Factory, Inc., and will be built at the joint venture's plant in Bursa, Turkey. The Linea will go on sale in the second half of 2007 in European and non-European countries, though for now the U.K. will be excluded. No word on what powerplants will be offered with the Linea, either.

You'll find Fiat's full press release after the jump...

[Source: Fiat]
Continue reading Focus fighter from Fiat: the Linea

Focus fighter from Fiat: the Linea originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Oct 2006 10:23:00 EST. The FIA World Motor Sport Council ruled today that Istanbul will keep its race despite the political shenanigans the Turks played on the podium at this year's race.

At the Turkish Grand Prix last month, race winner Felipe Massa was given his trophy by Mehmet Ali Talat, who was introduced as the "President of the Northern Turkish Republic of Cyprus". The problem is, no one recognizes Turkey's occupation of the Mediterranean island except Turkey, and Turkish officials practically admitted to deceiving the FIA as to their intentions to stage the political spectacle.

Although at first the FIA fumed over the incident and declared that racing was not an arena for global politics, the council only gave the Turks a $5 million penalty instead of revoking their grand prix, touring car race or world rally stages. Considering that Turkey reportedly spent over $150 million to build the track, $5 million seems like a drop in the ocean to achieve their political objectives.

Felipe Massa, the winner of the race, was presented his trophy by Mehmet Ali Talat, introduced by announcers as the President of the Northern Turkish Republic of Cyprus. Problem is, no such country exists except in the eyes of Turkey. The geographic area to which the the man's title refers is a part of Cyprus, the Mediterranean island nation over which Greece and Turkey have been fighting for decades.

Murat Yalicintas, head of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, admits that his organization delayed telling the FIA who the podium presenter would be in order to sneak their guy on the stand. For their efforts, the FIA is considering dropping the Turkish GP from next year's schedule, as well as canceling Turkey's round of the World Rally Championship. Lesson learned: it doesn't pay to mess with the FIA.

Thanks for the tip, Noah!

[Source: Planet-F1]
International incident takes place on Turkish F1 podium originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 30 Aug 2006 11:34:00 EST.
