<br />In a new (and very brief) report, UK's Channel4 reports that a production version of Volkswagen's comely <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/11/detroit-2009-volkswagen-bluesport-concept-turbodiesel-done-rig/">BlueSport  concept</a> has been delayed.<br /><br />While details are slim, Channel4 says that a company insider came clean to journalists about the diesel roadster's demise at a recent Australian press event, and according to said source, the reason for the model's mothballing is that the company believes that the dire global economy won't support niche products like the BlueSport. <br /><br />The report stops short of saying that the company has axed the program altogether, but presumably, if the BlueSport is delayed or dead, so are rumored versions from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/19/audi-version-of-volkswagen-bluesport-in-the-works/">Audi</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/24/rendered-speculation-seat-to-get-its-own-bluesport-roadster/">Seat</a>. There is no word on when the model might get a second chance at life, so for now, the BlueSport faces an uncertain future.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2009-volkswagen-bluesport-concept/low/">Detroit 2009: Volkswagen BlueSport Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2009-volkswagen-bluesport-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/vwbluesportconcept---05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2009-volkswagen-bluesport-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/vwbluesportconcept---06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2009-volkswagen-bluesport-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/vwbluesportconcept---07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2009-volkswagen-bluesport-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/vwbluesportconcept---08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2009-volkswagen-bluesport-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/vwbluesportconcept---09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/preview-volkswagen-bluesport-preview/low/">Detroit Preview: Volkswagen BlueSport Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/preview-volkswagen-bluesport-preview/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/00_vwroadster_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/preview-volkswagen-bluesport-preview/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/01_vwroadster_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/preview-volkswagen-bluesport-preview/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/01_vw_bluesport_roadster_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/preview-volkswagen-bluesport-preview/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/02_vwroadster_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/preview-volkswagen-bluesport-preview/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/02_vw_bluesport_roadster_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.channel4.com/4car/news/news-story.jsp?news_id=19166">Channel4</a>]<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/19/rumormill-volkswagen-bluesport-roadster-production-plans-halted/">Rumormill: Volkswagen BlueSport roadster production plans halted</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 19 May 2009 13:28:00 EST. <div align="center"><small><em><strong>Audi R8 TDI Le Mans concept - Click above for a hi-res image gallery</strong></em></small><br /></div>
<br />If anyone could have done a diesel supercar, it would have been Audi. After achieving utter domination in Le Mans racing with its R10 TDI, the German automaker unveiled two successive turbodiesel concept versions of the R8 supercar at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/13/detroit-2008-audi-unleashes-its-diesel-monster-the-r8-v12-tdi/">the Detroit show</a> and then at <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/03/red-menace-audi-r8-tdi-le-mans-infiltrates-geneva/">the Geneva salon</a> in 2008. But after whetting our appetites for an oil-burning supercar with instant power delivery and endless reserves of torque, Audi has reportedly canceled development of its R8 TDI program.<br /><br /> Apparently, the R8 was not originally designed to accommodate the company's enormous V12 turbodiesel engine, and re-engineering the car was proving far too costly for Audi to justify under these financial circumstances, especially when the American market, which accounts for 1/3rd of R8 sales, is marred by diesel prices that are higher than gas. Fortunately Audi's already given us the 5.2-liter V10 FSI and has the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/30/report-audi-r8-spyder-coming-in-2011/">convertible version in the works</a>, but a diesel R8 just isn't in the cards.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2008-audi-r8-v12-tdi-concept/low/">Audi R8 V12 TDI Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2008-audi-r8-v12-tdi-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/audir8v12tdi)live31_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2008-audi-r8-v12-tdi-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/audir8v12tdi)live32_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2008-audi-r8-v12-tdi-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/audir8v12tdi)live33_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2008-audi-r8-v12-tdi-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/audir8v12tdi)live34_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/detroit-2008-audi-r8-v12-tdi-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/audir8v12tdi)live35_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-r8-tdi-le-mans-1/low/">Audi R8 TDI Le Mans</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-r8-tdi-le-mans-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/01_r8_lemans_tdi_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-r8-tdi-le-mans-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/02_r8_lemans_tdi_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-r8-tdi-le-mans-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/03_r8_lemans_tdi_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-r8-tdi-le-mans-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/04_r8_lemans_tdi_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-r8-tdi-le-mans-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/05_r8_lemans_tdi_live_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/235572/shock_uturn_as_audi_axes_r8_diesel.html">Auto Express</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/07/all-torque-no-action-audi-reportedly-cancels-r8-tdi/">All Torque, No Action: Audi reportedly cancels R8 TDI</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 07 May 2009 13:59:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>Bentley Arnage Final Series - Click above for high-res gallery</small></strong></em><small><br /></small></div>
<small></small> <br />Bentley has <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/18/striking-oil-bentley-could-go-turbo-diesel/">long been rumored</a> to be <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/24/on-again-off-again-winterkorn-suggests-bentley-diesel/">considering the use of diesel engines</a>. The torquey oil-burners would enable Crewe to continue offering the kind of freight-train muscle for which it has become known while living up to the mandate of offering improved fuel economy, and, with the latest developments in particulate filter technology, reduce carbon emissions, as well. The company's marriage to Audi, which has carved out a nice niche for itself in diesel propulsion, seems to be a match made in motor heaven, and now reports suggest that, at long last, the marriage is set to be consummated with the next Arnage sedan.<br /><br />According to the latest output from the ever-churning rumor-mill, the replacement for the aging Arnage will employ a version of the V12 turbo-diesel used in the current Audi Q7 TDI. With 500 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque, the twelve-cylinder oil-burner would prove an ideal power-plant for the big saloon, and could get an even higher output version to join the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/20/bentley-v8-turns-50-years-old/">half-century-old 6 &amp;frac34;-liter V8</a> found in 530-horsepower trim in the current Brooklands, all while Bentley continues to toy with ethanol-burning variants of its W12 as previewed in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/03/geneva-2009-bentley-takes-a-tipple-continental-supersports-goe/">Continental Supersports</a> show car unveiled just days ago at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/Geneva-Motor-Show/">Geneva Motor Show</a> and Her Majesty's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/31/from-royal-blue-to-green-the-queen-retrofits-her-bentleys-to-ru/">State Limousine</a>.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bentley-arnage-final-series/low/">Bentley Arnage Final Series</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bentley-arnage-final-series/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/02_arnagefinalseries_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bentley-arnage-final-series/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/00_arnagefinalseries_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bentley-arnage-final-series/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/01_arnagefinalseries_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bentley-arnage-final-series/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/03_arnagefinalseries_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/bentley-arnage-final-series/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/04_arnagefinalseries_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.4wheelsnews.com/next-bentley-arnage-to-carry-audis-v12-diesel-engine/">4wheelsnews</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/12/report-next-bentley-arnage-to-feature-audi-turbo-diesel/">REPORT: Next Bentley Arnage to feature Audi turbo-diesel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 12 Mar 2009 17:29:00 EST. <div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"><small>Click above to view the Volvo D5 engine in all its high-resolution wonder</small></span><br style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;" /></div>
<br />By now, Volvo has been almost completely integrated into the Ford empire, but with its parent company looking to offload the Swedish subsidiary, Volvo's going to have to demonstrate its worth as a standalone automaker. Developing its own engines is a good place to start, and Volvo has just unveiled its own unique diesel powerplant.<br /><br />Replacing the existing D5 diesel, the new variant continues the five-cylinder tradition, but that's where the similarities end. The new mill displaces 2.4 liters, supplemented by twin sequential turbochargers, ceramic glow-plugs and piezoelectric fuel injectors. The new tech helps the D5 generate 205 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of twist, but more importantly, the engine now meets the stringent Euro 5 emissions standard with only 164g of CO2 per kilometer, while returning an impressive 45.6 mpg. The engine will be available in the British market S80 sedan in a few months, but unfortunately it isn't earmarked to cross the Atlantic. All we can do is look at the photos in the gallery and read the details in the press release after the jump.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-d5-diesel-engine/low/">Volvo D5 diesel engine</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-d5-diesel-engine/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/56721vol_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-d5-diesel-engine/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/56721-b-vol_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volvo-d5-diesel-engine/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/56721-a-vol_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/07/for-eur-eyes-only-volvo-releases-new-five-cylinder-diesel-in-s8/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>For Eur-eyes Only: Volvo releases new five-cylinder diesel in S80</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/07/for-eur-eyes-only-volvo-releases-new-five-cylinder-diesel-in-s8/">For Eur-eyes Only: Volvo releases new five-cylinder diesel in S80</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 16:59:00 EST. Available as a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/jeep-j8/913008/">two-door pickup</a> (above) or a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/jeep-j8/399602/">four-door</a> (like the civilian Wrangler Unlimited), the J8 goes on sale this month and was officially revealed at Euro Camp Jeep '08 in Germany. <br /><br />Power comes from a 150-horse turbodiesel with 295 lb-ft of torque, with that juice going to all four wheels via a five-speed auto and Jeep's Command-Trac 4WD. The J8's built to be a workhorse, with a Dana 60 rear, leaf springs in back, upgraded brakes, and a revamped intake that lets it ford 30 inches of water and handle a sandstorm lasting up to five hours. Its max payload is 2,750 pounds, and it has a towing capacity of over 7,700 pounds. Because the J8's duties will vary depending upon who's placing the order, a variety of cargo and seating configurations are offered, as is left- or right-hand-drive. All this, and no, you can't order one. Yes, that sucks. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/jeep-j8/low/">Jeep J8</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/jeep-j8/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/07/j8_eurocampjeep_1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/jeep-j8/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/jeepj8_hi001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/jeep-j8/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/jeepj8_hi003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/jeep-j8/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/jeepj8_hi004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/jeep-j8/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/09/jeepj8_hi005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Chrysler]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/11/production-jeep-j8-debuts-in-germany/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Production Jeep J8 debuts in Germany</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/11/production-jeep-j8-debuts-in-germany/">Production Jeep J8 debuts in Germany</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 11 Jul 2008 10:58:00 EST. So M-B announced today that it's releasing a new range of four-cylinder diesel mills that balances emissions, fuel economy and performance. The top-of-the-line 2.1-liter oilburner is producing 204 hp and 368 lb.-ft. of torque, or around 20-percent more than its predecessor, while returning better mileage and reducing emissions by over 10-percent. When fitted in the new C-class (250CDI) it's able to make the run to 60 in 7.7 seconds while getting 46 mpg.<br /><br />The other upcoming C-class models will include the 220 CDI and 200 CDI, producing 170 hp and 136 hp respectively. The boost in performance and fuel efficiency comes from the use of new twin-stage turbochargers, more efficient exhaust recirculation, intercoolers, injection systems and a revised common-rail setup.<br /><br />All the details are available in Mercedes' press release posted below the fold.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-four-cylinder-diesels/low/">2009 Mercedes-Benz Four Cylinder diesels</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-four-cylinder-diesels/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/638105_1142440_5440_40-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-four-cylinder-diesels/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/638106_1142443_5440_40-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-four-cylinder-diesels/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/638190_1142626_4992_33-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-four-cylinder-diesels/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/638194_1142638_4992_33-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-four-cylinder-diesels/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/04/638192_1142632_4992_33-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/10/mercedes-unveils-new-range-of-diesel-four-cylinders/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mercedes unveils new range of diesel four-cylinders</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/10/mercedes-unveils-new-range-of-diesel-four-cylinders/">Mercedes unveils new range of diesel four-cylinders</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 18:35:00 EST. The 2.9L V6 turbocharged diesel engine will make its production debut in 2009 beneath the bonnet of the Cadillac CTS where it will produce 250 horsepower and a stout 406 ft-lbs. of torque, though GM hasn't released any fuel economy figures for the sedan just yet. The 2.9L diesel will be very versatile, able to be mounted in a longitudinal or tranverse layout in rear-wheel, front-wheel or all-wheel drive platforms. The motor features some high tech hardware to meet future emissions standards including advanced engine management software, piezo injectors, a variable geometry turbo and exhaust-gas aftertreatment technology to cut down on the nitrous oxide emissions. <br /><br />GM says the new turbodiesel will be sold "mainly" in Europe, which we suppose leaves the door open for seeing this engine in the States one day, though likely not in the near future. <br /><br />[Source: GM]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/06/geneva-motor-show-cadillac-unveils-new-2-9l-v6-diesel-for-cts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Geneva Motor Show: Cadillac unveils new 2.9L V6 diesel for CTS</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/06/geneva-motor-show-cadillac-unveils-new-2-9l-v6-diesel-for-cts/">Geneva Motor Show: Cadillac unveils new 2.9L V6 diesel for CTS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 06 Mar 2007 02:30:00 EST. There are no solid numbers yet on fuel economy, but Audi claims a 20-25% improvement over standard gasoline engines. The automaker also claims that such an engine will perhaps not be as affected by the newly revised EPA fuel economy test procedure.<br /><br />No word yet on pricing, and with all the factors potentially at play, we're not willing to even wager a guess at this point.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-q7-3-0-tdi/126175/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/q7_30tdi_lr_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-q7-3-0-tdi/126167/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/q7_30tdi_lr_18_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-q7-3-0-tdi/126153/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/q7_30tdi_lr_25_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-q7-3-0-tdi/126163/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/q7_30tdi_lr_15_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-q7-3-0-tdi/126173/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/q7_30tdi_lr_24_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" /></a><br /><br /><strong>For our comprehensive listing of everything from Detroit, click <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/07/detroit-auto-show-debuts-and-galleries/">here</a>.</strong><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/07/detroit-auto-show-audi-announces-us-plans-for-q7-3-0l-tdi/">Detroit Auto Show: Audi announces US plans for Q7 3.0L TDI</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 07 Jan 2007 18:33:00 EST. Grammy-winning singer Seal was on hand to belt out his hit "Crazy", and that term more accurately describes a 6L diesel that makes 500 HP and 737 lb-ft of the twisty stuff (that latter number is maintained in the useful range of 1800- 3000 RPM). This is accomplished via a pair of variable-vane turbochargers that apply 1.6 bar (24 PSI) of squeeze to the intercooled intake charge, and a direct injection system which employs piezoelectric injectors to spray fuel - including multiple pre- and post-combustion events - at a mind-boggling 2000 bar (30,000 PSI). A compression ratio of 16:1 and heavy use of exhaust gas circulation also help keep down the emissions, which meet the 2010 Euro-5 standard. <br /><br />All that power is fed to an all-wheel-drive system that maintains a 40:60 front-rear balance to maintain what Audi refers to as "slightly tail-heavy, sporty handling characteristics. To slow nearly three tons of mass moving at superlegal velocities, a set of monstrous disc brakes are fitted (the diameter is unspecified, but the fronts appear to be somewhere north of 15"). The concept also carries an interior trimmed in impractical white leather and light-colored carbon fiber. <br /><br />No word as to when it might be produced, which is just as well since we won't be able to afford it. <br /><br />The press release is posted after the jump, and we've placed photos (live and stock) <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-q7-v12-tdi-concept-1/"><span style="font-weight: bold;">here</span>.</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-q7-v12-tdi-concept-1/126056/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/audi-q7-v12-tdi---25_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-q7-v12-tdi-concept-1/126068/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/audi-q7-v12-tdi---29_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-q7-v12-tdi-concept-1/126073/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/audi-q7-v12-tdi---35_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-q7-v12-tdi-concept-1/126071/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/audi-q7-v12-tdi---30_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/audi-q7-v12-tdi-concept-1/126062/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/01/audi-q7-v12-tdi---34_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" /></a><br /><br /><strong>For our comprehensive listing of everything from Detroit, click <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/07/detroit-auto-show-debuts-and-galleries/">here</a>.</strong><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/07/detroit-auto-show-audi-unleashes-the-beastly-q7-v12-tdi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Detroit Auto Show: Audi unleashes the beastly Q7 V12 TDI</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/07/detroit-auto-show-audi-unleashes-the-beastly-q7-v12-tdi/">Detroit Auto Show: Audi unleashes the beastly Q7 V12 TDI</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 07 Jan 2007 17:32:00 EST. That may all change when BMW announces their plans for diesels in the U.S., in addition to debuting the hydrogen-powered 7-series and new X5, at the L.A. Auto Show later this month. The soon-to-be-released oil burner in question is the 535d, which currently meets all manner of state and federal acronymed organizations, however, when 2009 rolls along and California enacts a 30-percent reduction in emissions, BMW will have to bust hump to make their diesels as clean as can be.<br /><br />This move is due in no small part to their cross-town rival, Mercedes-Benz, beginning to offer the Bluetec line of diesels on U.S. soil and Audi's plans on introducing a new TDI engine at the Detroit Auto Show (sorry, NAIAS). However, just like MB, BMW will have to offer some form of urea injection, beyond what it currently employs.<br /><br />[Source: Winding Road]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/11/08/bmw-has-a-plan-for-diesels-in-the-u-s/">BMW has a plan for diesels in the U.S.</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 08 Nov 2006 14:28:00 EST. Enlarged to 6.7 liters from 5.9 through increases in both bore and stroke, the new inline-six turbodiesel now boasts 350 horsepower and 650 ft-lbs. of torque, all while meeting stricter diesel emissions standards for 2007. The engine also features an optional exhaust brake function that improves braking under heavy towing situations, a common feature of big rigs and large motor coaches. <br /><br />The new power ratings makes the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel competitive with new powerplants from both Ford and General Motors, each of which has also announced new or substantially upgraded diesel motors for 2007 and beyond. <br /><br />Follow the jump to see how each automaker's new diesel compares with the others.<br /><br />[Source: Dodge]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/10/02/dodges-new-diesel-debuts-at-texas-state-fair/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dodge's new diesel debuts at Texas State Fair</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/10/02/dodges-new-diesel-debuts-at-texas-state-fair/">Dodge's new diesel debuts at Texas State Fair</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 02 Oct 2006 06:57:00 EST. One of the most common is its compact design, which allows the center of gravity to be lower in the host vehicle. Additionally, since the boxer's pistons cancel out much of the vibration, the rotational balance is second to none. Both of these advantages will lend themselves to the advent of the first boxer diesel, which will find a home within a variety of Subaru models in Europe and possible even here in the States.<br /><br />Hiroyuki Ikeda, Subaru Europe's President, announced at the Paris Motor Show that the development of the H4 turbo-diesel boxer is almost complete. The design, pictured above, reveals two interesting tidbits: first, the turbo, which is traditionally housed towards the passenger side firewall on most Subarus, will be moved south of the crankshaft to retain the boxer's low center of gravity. Second, the new DOHC diesel will be outfitted with a timing chain, currently only seen on Subaru's H6 engines, and will be the first H4 so equipped.<br /><br />If one of Subie's diesels does make it to this continent, expect it to reside under the hood of the new Forester.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.gizmag.com/go/6235/">GizMag</a> via <a href="http://blogs.edmunds.com/Straightline/1549">Straightline</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/09/30/subarus-diesel-boxer/">Subaru's diesel boxer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sat, 30 Sep 2006 11:54:00 EST. <p>JCB's Dieselmax land speed record vehicle has recently passed the 200 MPH mark in testing, which is a major step towards beating the current diesel record of 235 MPH.</p>
<p>While each of the vehicle's two 5.0L turbodiesel powerplants were <a href="http://www.dieselforecast.com/ArticleDetails.php?articleID=294">recently certified at 750 HP</a> during dyno testing (neatly matching the engineering estimates), they were dialed back to a mere 600 HP for the purpose of these trial runs. When the vehicle finally unleashes all 1500 HP - expected to happen later this month at the Bonneville salt flats - it's estimated that it will exceed the 300 MPH mark. When producing maximum power, the two production-based engines consume a stunning 3.3 <em>tons</em> of air per hour. </p>
<p>The plan is to make the record runs using low-sulfur pump fuel, and the vehicle will also employ particle traps to keep the exhaust smoke-free. LSR veteran Andy Green will be manning the Dieselmax; his job qualifications include the current world land speed record run of over 763 MPH in 1997.</p>

These engines will be a new foray into the mass market for the diesel engine manufacturer, which is best known for powering big rigs across the U.S. <br /><br />Cummins says the project resulted from a 9-year partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy to develop high-performance, fuel-efficient, clean diesel engines that provide an average fuel savings of 30 percent over comparable gas engines. Cummins has not yet picked a site to construct a manufacturing facility for the engines, but does have a short list.<br /><br />While the automaker in question prefers to remain anonymous for competitive reasons, our sources tell us that it's likely DaimlerChrysler. DCX would make sense considering Cummins already supplies Dodge Ram heavy-duty pickups with its 5.9-liter HO turbo diesel. Our sources also say that the engines, which will use a V layout and not be inline, will go into the Dodge Ram 1500 and Durango. <br /><br />Thanks to John and Mike for the tip!<br /><br />[Source: Cummins]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/07/26/cummins-to-supply-light-duty-diesels-to-who/">Cummins to supply light-duty diesels to - who?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 26 Jul 2006 17:08:00 EST. It will likely become even more popular now that Volvo has introduced its first diesel engine in the Swedish convertible, a 2.4L turbodiesel initially developed for the S60, S70, XC70 and XC90 but downsized and detuned for the C70. Known as the D5, this five-cylinder turbodiesel develops 180 horsepower and 258 ft-lbs. of torque. It will initially be mated with a five-speed automatic transmission. <br /><br />[Source: Volvo]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/05/30/volvo-drops-a-diesel-in-the-c70/">Volvo drops a diesel in the C70</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 30 May 2006 10:57:00 EST. <p>Okay... our love for rattling heavy-duty pickups notwithstanding, the idea of a Duramax-powered GMC race truck still seems odd, even though a half-year has passed since we first <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2005/12/13/gale-banks-goes-racing-with-an-oil-burner/">mentioned this monster</a>. But with Audi's oil-burning R10 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/03/19/audi-r10-tdi-delivers-glowing-plug-for-diesel-power-with-twelve/">taking the checkered flag</a> last month at Sebring, maybe Gale Banks doesn't have a proverbial loose rod bolt or two. </p>
<p>To prove that progress has been made on this monster over the winter, Banks has posted an update with some video clips on the company's website. None of them will raise goosebumps like Climb Dance, but it's still pretty cool to see a big red pickup truck doing skidpad testing without looking like one of those Consumer Reports rollover tests. And we definitely feel sorry for the Miata driver at Buttonwillow that was overtaken by the D-Max - that had to be a somewhat scary (and humbling) experience.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/05/02/video-banks-d-max-type-r-gmc-race-truck/">Video: Banks D-Max Type-R GMC race truck</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 02 May 2006 15:54:00 EST. <p>Audi's first bona-fide SUV isn't even
here yet, and already it's multiplying. In addition to the V8 model coming this June ($50,620), the Four-Ringed-One
plans to introduce a V8 Premium trim level, which will ring up at $60,620. With all mod cons, expect the eight-cylinder
Q7 to lighten your children's trust funds by about $65k, putting it smack in the range of offerings like Porsche's
low-end Cayennes, Mercedes M-class, and the <a
href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/02/20/2006-land-rover-range-rover-sport-hse-in-the-autoblog-garage-da/">Range Rover
Sport, currently parked in the Autoblog Garage.</a></p>
<p>Additionally, a cheaper V6-powered Q7 will hit the U.S. a
few months later, and according to Edmund's Inside Line, turbodiesel and hybrid drivetrains will be in the mix for MY
2008.<br /></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/02/21/audi-plans-vast-range-of-q7-sport-utilities/">Audi plans vast range of Q7 sport utilities</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 21 Feb 2006 19:00:00 EST.
