Nissan DeltaWing

Think back to childhood for a moment. What did you do when you wanted, say, a new skateboard, but mom and dad were dragging their heels about ponying up for one? That's right, you built your own, out of bits of scrap plywood and some old wheels discarded by an older sibling. And it sucked.

We see the same situation playing out here. The children at Top Gear are absolutely gaga for the DeltaWing race car, which Nissan will be campaigning at this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans. And even if they are Top Gear, nobody at Nissan is going to just give them an experimental race car for futzing around. So they are building their own. Or at least a simulacrum of the DeltaWing, out of what appears to be junk.

Details are scarce, but the image gallery Top Gear has on its website tells enough of the story that we're pretty sure they aren't going to come anywhere close. Not only does the 1,100-pound curb weight of the revolutionary race car present something of a challenge when you're basically welding the thing up from scratch, but whatever that ancient engine sitting in the nose of the Top Gear project is, we're plenty sure it won't be packing the 300-plus horsepower of Nissan's turbocharged four.

But just as your pre-pubescent charm and pluckiness eventually prevailed in the skateboard scenario, we're thinking Top Gear might be on to something with its fanboy-ish DeltaWing replica. After all, mom may have embarrassed you in the skate shop, but she did get you the real thing, didn't she?

Top Gear USA

Host Adam Ferrara has confirmed Top Gear USA will be back for a third season. The comedian-turned television personality broke the news during an event in New York City last night, according to Inside Line. The show is slowly gaining momentum in the U.S., and this season saw its best ratings yet. One episode drew an impressive 2.1 million viewers. Of course, that's a small figure compared to the legions who tune in or download the original "Top Gear," but with the U.S. hosts getting more comfortable with each other every episode, we'll hardly turn down more car-oriented programming.

Then again, Top Gear USA may be your only TG fix over the next few months. Jeremy Clarkson just confirmed the original show won't be back until 2013. According to Ferrara, production on season three starts this weekend.

Jeremy Clarkson did an 11-minute interview with a South African radio station that has a name to match its geographic location. Clarkson discussed what it took to make the Top Gear segment that had them drivng around the Monaco GP circuit on a race weekend, the coming Ron Howard movie Rush about the 1976 F1 battle between Niki Lauda and James Hunt and Top Gear Festival 2012 "with an array of cars that has never been seen anywhere."

But what has caught everyone's attention - everyone except for the radio interviewer, that is - was Clarkson saying that the festival would be "about the only time" he, Hammond and May would work together in 2012 because "there's no Top Gear this year." There's video of the interview below, the bombshell at about 8:10. Since it's all a bit confusing, Mr. Clarkson himself has set the record straight via his personal Twitter account, confirming that Top Gear will return in January of 2013, though there will be a Christmas special some time before that.

The reason petrolheads will be missing out on their BBC fix? Simon Cowell, apparently. "Sunday nights will be full of fat people singing," said Clarkson. "Top Gear is a medium size van. Cowell is a juggernaut. When he has finished his singing competition, our new series will start."

Jeremy Clarkson

Of course you all know who that man in the picture is, don't you? He's Jeremy Clarkson, one of the stars of Top Gear, the BBC's hilarious automotive variety show. Its 18th series just premiered on BBC America this past Monday, with more new episodes airing Mondays at 8:30 p.m. EDT/PDT.

We include this preamble because the powers that be at the BBC have kindly suggested that if we want to use this photo of their Mr. Clarkson, we do so "for show promotion only."

Now that we've taken care of that, we'll get on with the news, which of course, pertains to the aforementioned celebrity rankling yet another group in Britain. This time it's a result of Clarkson's commentary in The Sun newspaper, calling people who commit suicide by jumping under trains "selfish," suggesting that trains should be put back on schedule after these incidents as soon as possible. According to a report by Press Gazette, five groups who assist suicide victims and their families have complained to the Press Complaints Commission, stating their belief that Clarkson and his newspaper employer violated a clause pertaining to "intrusion into grief."

The Sun apologized, according to the report, removed Clarkson's column from its website and agreeing to train its staff in reporting suicide sensitively, among other concessions.

Given Clarkson's long history of seemingly attempting to offend everyone in Britain, from its clergy to public sector unions, if not the world (particularly Indians), we wonder if he'll actually be forced to complete the training. And if he does, we can only imagine what an amazing BBC special that might make.

2012 BMW 328i - dead-on front view

Of all of the cars Top Gear host Richard Hammond has driven - and that's a lot of cars - it is an oil-burning entry-level luxury sedan that has earned the plaudit, "possibly the best car ever made." He's referring to the 2013 BMW 320d in an article for the UK's Mirror newspaper, further crediting it with "brilliant handling," an easy-to-use infotainment system, "very accurate steering" and being "one of the nicest Threes to drive in decades."

His conclusion does come from a lack of negatives just as much as the positives. However, even though it's still a huge call, we've heaped our own ultimate praise on BMW's gasoline four-pot, the 328i, which trades a quicker sprint to 60 mph for a few mpg less than the 320d's 52 Imperial mpg (43 U.S. mpg).

Hammond's a fan of the styling, and in fact the only thing he doesn't like is a stripe on his 3 Series tester. Click the link to get the words straight from the Hamster's mouth.

Occasionally, we get the impression Jeremy Clarkson is simply screwing with the rest of the world. Either that, or he has no bodily control over over the way his lips, tongue and vocal chords move.

In the past, the "Top Gear" presenter has been notoriously belligerent toward any form of transportation that doesn't involve the burning of hydrocarbons, bicycles included. After famously railing that bikes and cars have entered into an undeclared war in London, Clarkson has come out in support of Copenhagen's bicycle culture, calling it "fan-bleeding-tastic." If that's not strange enough, he claims he would live in the city in a heartbeat.

Confused? According to Clarkson, the difference is that, while bikes are forced to co-exist with cars in London, Copenhagen cyclists simply have to contend with one another. As a result, there's no weird high-visibility clothing required and significantly less hostility toward your fellow man.

Makes sense to us, though we have a hard time envisioning Clarkson on a bike. The last time the personality took to something with less than four wheels, it didn't go so well.

Top Gear Toyota Hilux

The Toyota Hilux can attribute a fair portion of the its celebrity to the Top Gear crew's exuberant doting. After attempting to destroy the truck via a smattering of inhumane methods, traversing the frozen wastes of Antarctica the Arctic and braving the fires of Icelandic volcanoes, the show has given the globe-conquering Toyota more love than nearly any other model.

It looks as if that won't slow down anytime soon. According to Toyota, Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond will once again take to the wheel of a specially-prepared Hilux for an all new challenge.

Just what will that task entail? Toyota is keeping its mouth shut at the moment, and Top Gear isn't typically one for spilling secrets early. Judging by the photos, however, it appears as if the vehicle will need to withstand substantial water crossings and support the trio for at least one night in the wild. Color us excited. The BBC has come out in defense of Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson after the Reverend Graeme Anderson, vicar of St. Mary's Church in Radcliffe-on-Trent, complained that the entertainer "trivialized, belittled and cheapened" Jesus Christ. Clarkson has a long history of rousing the ire of different groups, and Anderson specifically took issue with a segment in which Clarkson took the wheel of the KTM X-Bow. After hearing Clarkson's exclamations of "God almighty" and "Jesus wept," Anderson says he was both surprised and upset. The vicar has since vowed to never watch Top Gear again.

After petitioning both Clarkson and the BBC for an apology, the network responded by saying the speech is part of everyday language, and that while its program strives to portray society as it really is, it respects the "fundamental human right to exercise freedom of thought, conscience and religion."

Clarkson has remained uncharacteristically mute on the dustup.

Richard Hammond's Crash Course trailer screencap

When it was made public last summer that Richard Hammond was unhappy with his lot in life on Britain's Top Gear, insiders said he would "get the bigger, more defined role that he deserves." We don't know yet what's in store for him during Series 18 of TG, but it appears he definitely has a bigger role in his new BBC America series, Richard Hammond's Crash Course.

The show puts Hammond in all manner of big vehicles with the apparent intention of running over all manner of little vehicles. It premieres on April 16 right after the season premiere of Top Gear, and there's a much more exciting explanation of it in the official BBC trailer after the jump.

Top Gear Italy Peugeot 207 downhill skier

Leave it up to the Top Gear crew to put this one together. No, not the famous British crew of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May; the staff behind this video of a Peugeot 207 rally car going up against a downhill skier hails from Italy and represents Top Gear Magazine.

Of course, before any downhill festivities can properly commence, the car needs to make its way up the mountain course... and that's when the magic starts to happen, making use of the most serious set of spiked tires we've ever seen.

What goes up, must come down, right? And so down it goes, chasing the Pug's co-pilot, Anna Andreussi, right back down from whence it came. It's all in good fun, with plenty of aerial acrobatics to go along with the expected snow drifting shenanigans. See it all go down yourself in the video below.

The blokes at "Top Gear" love their Facebook friends so much, that when they got 10 million fans, Jeremy Clarkson recorded a short personal thank you. Well, as personal as Clarkson can get anyway. And the Stig showed his appreciation by exploding a caravan (video after the jump).

But the batty Brits are now challenged with celebrating their next Facebook milestone of achieving 15 million fans. They're hoping those very fans can help them with a stunt that tops caravan carnage. The "Top Gear" team is willing to do anything, no matter how crazy, to say thanks.

Suggestions so far include drifting 15 $1 million cars in sync, a trip from Scotland to London on lawnmowers, fabricate a V8-powered Robin, and a road trip across Germany in VW Beetles.

The AB team brainstormed a bit and came up with the idea of rewarding a fan (hopefully one of us) with a brand new Bugatti Veyron! But for only 24 hours. After which the "lucky" guy (or gal, of course) would be obligated to obliterate the supercar in a depressing display of overwhelming pyrotechnics.

The Top Gear production team from Korea averted a serious disaster after a helicopter used during filming crashed into the Arizona desert. Amazingly, both the pilot and the camera person escaped the incident relatively unharmed. CNN reports that the pair credit their survival to the thick exterior of the retired military chopper.

Hit the jump to watch the video of the actual crash. The footage only reveals the last few seconds before the impact, but the aftermath video shows a chopper that is wrecked nearly beyond recognition. We're amazed and thrilled that nobody was seriously injured.

Top Gear Star in a Reasonably Priced Car infographic

Over the years, Top Gear has had 154 celebrities on its Star in a Reasonably Priced Car segment. They've used three different cars and driven in a variety of weather conditions ranging from dry to wet and even snow. With such variety, you can bet there will be numbers to crunch and statistics to ponder, and as we all know, the best (or at least the most fun) way to do that is with - you guessed it - an infographic.

Tesla and the company's lawyers are nothing if not determined. After a judge smacked down the electric vehicle manufacturer's libel suit against the BBC and Top Gear for comments made about the range of the Tesla Roadster, the automaker rallied with a second, amended lawsuit. It didn't take long for the the same judge to nix the new case, too, saying the amendment was "not capable of being defamatory at all, or, if it is, it is not capable of being a sufficiently serious defamatory meaning to constitute a real and substantial tort."

That sound? It's the smack of the judicial backhand.

The judge went on to say drivers know a manufacturer's claim about range is dependent on driving conditions and habits.

The dustup, as you may recall, began when Top Gear put the Tesla Roadster through its paces on the show's test track. While Jeremy Clarkson lauded the car's acceleration, the segment claimed the vehicle ran out of juice after just 55 miles of abuse. That figure is far south of the 200 mile range Tesla claims for the vehicle. CEO Elon Musk called the show "completely phony" not long after the segment aired and brought out the legal guns. The rest, as they say, is history.

British television watchdog Ofcom has ruled Jeremy Clarkson didn't violate any broadcasting rules when the Top Gear presenter suggested he would deal with striking public workers by taking the time to "execute them in front of their families." While Clarkson later went on to apologize for the remarks after labor unions began making noise about potential legal action, Ofcom said that the comments were meant as satire in their context. BBC has notoriously strict impartiality laws. The report went on to say that given Clarkson's history of controversial comments, viewers are aware of his likelihood to offend.

Ofcom also said the presenter's comments weren't a reflection of his actual beliefs. Clarkson has seemingly made a second career out of garnering the ire of various groups. The equal-opportunity offender has managed to rile Indians, Mexicans, women, Christians, the Welsh, cancer survivors and most of the Arab world at one time or another. That's quite the run.

Just when we were starting to think that there is nothing on television worth watching, we get our first look at Top Gear series 18. Beyond the jump is a 30 second teaser of the upcoming season, with a glimpse at more episodes filled with Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond.

The cars are there as well, including a very yellow Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Black Series, NASCAR Top Gear style and some crazy man who jumps out of a plane with a powered wing attached to his back. Top Gear magazine and Jeremy Clarkson have already let us in on their 2011 care of the year, the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque taking the cake from both of them (although Clarkson made the distinction that the best car of 2011 was the BMW 535d M-Sport Touring). A few more TG stars have clocked in to make their assessments, with Hammond choosing the BMW 1 Series M, May selecting the Fisker Karma, The Stig pointing to the BAC Mono, and mag writer Tom Ford laying money on the Morgan 3Wheeler.

Hammond found the 1 Series M perfectly "boisterous," May was smitten with the Karma's future-forward-vegan ethose, namely the fact that it has no animal products, and The Stig's stenographer wrote that the F3-racer-cum-street-legal-maniac BAC Mono is, well, just that. As for the Morgan 3Wheeler, after recounting all the ways it misses the mark as a car, Ford gives those very reasons for it being an awesome experience. Pretty much every time Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson opens his mouth these days, someone takes offense, which does make it hard to tell whether Clarkson is actually offensive.

The latest complaints have come after the Top Gear Christmas special, in which Clarkson and his posse go to India on a "trade mission." According to The Telegraph, the BBC has received 23 complaints about the show, in which Clarkson is charged with making insensitive remarks about Indian clothing, trains, food and history.

Clarkson's "funny" bits on the show included dropping his pants in front of Indian dignitaries and outfitting a Jaguar XJS with a toilet seat and then driving around Indian slums, according to the report. Clarkson reportedly described the Jag as "perfect for India because everyone who comes here gets the trots."

While we haven't seen the episode, we do know that the XJS has a reputation for crapping out with some frequency. Before you fire up the torrents, check out the episode trailer after the jump.
