Apple pie, baseball and Bob Lutz. It doesn't get much more American than that. So why did it take this long for Maximum Bob to appear on the Colbert Report, the most Lincolnishly patriotic show on television? Well the GM vice-chairman pulled up onto the set for last night's episode of the Comedy Central mainstay to talk about the new Chevy Volt.

Of course we wouldn't want to spoil the surprise any more than we already have, but if you missed Colbert last night, then just follow the jump to see Lutz actually at a loss for words (!) while he tries to explain why you can't drive a plug-in hybrid while it's actually plugged in.

We're convinced that some of the writers over at the Colbert Report are rampant pistonheads; maybe even daily Autoblog readers. Several of the stories we've covered have made it onto the pseudo-pundit's desk and last night was no exception. During the "Colbert Platinum" segment, which aims to inform only his overtly wealthy viewers, Stephen discusses the counterfeit Ferrari ring that was recently busted in Rome. While we were able to spot the Fiero intake manifold that gave these Faux-rraris away, Colbert suggests that the best way to ferret out a fake is to scrape a little bit of paint off the hood behind the emblem. If someone begins beating the living Hell out of you, it's probably real. You can watch the entire Colbert Platinum segment above, however, be advised that unless you've hunted a man for sport, you're not worthy.

Steven Colbert has triumphantly returned to his nightly tirades after being off the air for over two months because of the Writer's Guild strike. The faux conservative commentator's comeback happened on Monday, but last night, Colbert weighed in on the General's announcement that it's developing a vehicle that takes those pesky driving duties away from the person behind the wheel. Colbert opines that The Boss might be the answer to his dreams of catching up on TIVOed Oprah episodes or sending a scathing email to the New York Times editorial department while barreling along at 80 mph. More importantly, Colbert questions that if a car can drive itself, why can't they develop a TV show that writes itself? All the truthiness is available in the video after the jump.
