The automaker, which is the fifth largest in Korea, was forced to enter into receivership last week after failing to secure adequate funding past what was required to pay its workers for time already put in. SAIC, the company's Chinese owners, have given up management rights to the Korean automaker, leading many to believe that this is could be the end of the road. Perhaps not. Russian automaker Sollers has made the Korean company an offer that could see the firm's <strike>ugly</strike> oddly-styled SUVs live on. Details of the offer have yet to be released, but Sollers already produces a few of the Korean company's 'utes in Russia through a licensing agreement, and the deal would reportedly secure the uninterrupted production of Rexton II and Kyron SUVs in the Far East, completely independent of Ssangyong. As yet, there is no word that anyone is attempting ro rescue the spectacularly proportioned Ssangyong Rodius MPV. Keep hope alive.

[Source: Reuters]
Not Quite Dead Yet: Russian firm vying for Ssangyong SUV assembly rights originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Jan 2009 17:29:00 EST.
Proof that Italians can design some that aren't sexy is at hadn: the Intercar RX 400 pickup. Intercar, a recently self-anointed car design firm near Modena, took a Ssangyong Rexton and added a pickup truck bed. Why you would start your tuning enterprise with a Ssangyong, and why you would make it even less attractive than it already is (a feat that should be recognized as difficult, for sure, but not desirable), are questions we simply can't answer.

The company's background is motor homes and campers, and it shows. That might also explain why Intercar thinks you'd want a 90.5-inch goiter permanently attached to the back of your Rexton. Sure, it can fit all kinds of recreation vehicles, and a wheelbarrow and load of of dirt, as well... but if you bought an SUV, isn't that what trailers are for? Intercar's other tuning forays aren't nearly as bad, and its 2-seater sidecar is just plain kooky.

It's like someone cross-bred an M-Class with a Lancia Thesis."

In case you're wondering, that's bad. That dealership, to me, was like some sort of automotive Island of Dr. Moreau.

Anyway, SsangYong UK has announced that it's releasing two new new limited edition Rexton SUVs, and when they say limited, they're really not kidding. The Rexton S Sport is limited to 90 units and comes with navigation, Texas alloy wheels and Chicago side bars with steps. It costs £19,995.

The Rexton SE Sport is limited to just 65 vehicles, and gets a Kenwood nav, Montana 18" alloys, Denver side steps and rear parking assist. It'll set you back £23,995.

What those American cities have to do with the accessories they're named after is a total mystery, but hey, if it wasn't bizarre, it wouldn't be a SsangYong.

(Additional info, photo after the jump)

[Source: SsangYong]
Continue reading SsangYong Rexton gets two new limited editions in the UK

SsangYong Rexton gets two new limited editions in the UK originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 Jul 2006 19:58:00 EST.
