Why is it that everything looks cooler in slow motion? And the slower the better, especially when you're dealing with one of those new-fangled high frame rate super cameras. Case in point? When you add a MG Midget, a serious amount of explosives and a 1,000 frame per second camera and you have some very compelling YouTube footage.

Hit the jump to look on as Speed TV's Stuntbusters lay waste to what looks like a rather tired (and likely non-running) MG. There is nothing but really slow demolition and some Mary Lou Retton-style tumbling, but it's totally worth your 1:09.
Continue reading Watch a burning Midget flip at 1,000 frames-per-second

Watch a burning Midget flip at 1,000 frames-per-second originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 01 Feb 2012 14:57:00 EST.
Speed TV's Dumbest Stuff on Wheels is coming back for a second season later this month, and in case you don't know what you're in for, they've put together a "Best Of" compilation from Season One. It's a simple concept, though: really bad ideas + wheels.

We're sympathetic toward the folks attempting trics, because after all, crashing is part of perfecting. But the guy riding his motorcycle through the waiting room? And the lass above, headed straight at the camera like Toonces the Driving Cat? Not gonna end well. Follow the jump for five minutes of tragic hilarity.
Continue reading Dumbest Stuff on Wheels compilation makes Season 1 reruns redundant

Dumbest Stuff on Wheels compilation makes Season 1 reruns redundant originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 14 Jan 2012 17:35:00 EST.
Word around the internetz today is that SPEED channel's The Car Show has been cancelled and will not be returning for a second season. The Car Show debuted last July 13 on SPEED and was seen by many enthusiasts as that channel's answer to the U.S. version of Top Gear on The History Channel, which we learned a few months ago was picked up for a second season. The Car Show leaves behind its panel of hosts, which included comedian and car guy Adam Carolla (who moves on to Celebrity Apprentice with Michael Andretti and Paul Teutel Sr.), Pulitzer Prize-winning auto journalist Dan Neil, former NBA star John Sally and host and producer of The Smoking Tire, Matt Farah.
The Car Show is cancelled originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 07 Jan 2012 16:26:00 EST.
For the past several years, SPEED has invited classic car fans to participate in the Barrett-Jackson auction with the Hagerty Fantasy Bid contest. Viewers compete to correctly guess the sale prices for select vehicles, and those who accumulate the most points come away with prizes.

SPEED will be holding the contest once again for 2012, and today announced that it will be sweetening the deal for participants - a customized 2011 Shelby GT500 with 750 horsepower. The car has been upgraded with a Ford Racing supercharger system, adjustable suspension system, Wilwood brakes and a few unique visual enhancements.

Lest you think your lack of knowledge of the classic car market leaves you no chance at winning this special Shelby GT500, don't fret. Simply making a fantasy bid during the auction automatically enters you to win the car, regardless of its accuracy. Of course, if your guesses are spot-on then you have a chance to win a variety of prizes, including a 60-inch Samsung television, gift cards, fuel cards and an iPad 2.

The Hagerty Fantasy Bid starts on January 19th, and you can register over at www.speedfantasybid.com starting on January 13th. Hit the jump for more details about the contest and the Shelby GT500 giveaway.
Continue reading SPEED TV giving away customized Shelby GT500 as part of Hagerty Fantasy Bid at Barrett-Jackson

SPEED TV giving away customized Shelby GT500 as part of Hagerty Fantasy Bid at Barrett-Jackson originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 04 Jan 2012 18:30:00 EST.
Two years ago, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety celebrated its fiftieth anniversary by taping the offset frontal crash of a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air into a 2009 Chevy Malibu. The Bel Air did not handle it well. The Speed TV show Stuntbusters, which airs on Tuesdays and "explores motoring myths behind the latest automotive technology," did the same with two Cadillacs.

The show parked a 1962 Cadillac Sedan de Ville a mile from a 2002 Deville and ran them into each other, head-on, at 50 miles per hour. Enthusiasts are constantly complaining about how big and heavy cars have become, but you do not want to be in a crash while driving a car that predates modern passive safety innovations. For a reminder why, there's a video after the jump.
Continue reading 1962 Cadillac vs. 2002 Cadillac in head-on collision

1962 Cadillac vs. 2002 Cadillac in head-on collision originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 27 Nov 2011 18:01:00 EST.
Blame it on our Rust Belt sensibilities, but we can't think of anything cooler than rally cars racing full-bore around a steel mill. The video after the jump is about as heavy metal as it gets, and the gritty action is coming to your television in a new Speed TV series called Battle Cross. The steel mill pilot shown here - airs on November 17 at 10 pm Eastern. That's this Thursday, kids, so set your DVR now, or ask your parents for permission to stay up late.

This first episode features 2011 Rally America Champion David Higgins driving against Subaru Rally Team USA teammate Dave Mirra. The competition is a two-round affair, the first a standard fastest-time-wins, autocross-style challenge, while the second is a judged "freestyle session." Think: figure skating - but with sequins and feathers replaced by popping wastegates and two-foot wings.

A whole host of other names are attached to the series. Rally driver Andrew Comrie-Picard and Stacy Keibler, she of WWE and girlfriend of George Clooney fame, will co-host the show. Drifting star Samuel Hubinette and rally driver Stephan Verdier will serve as judges. Battle Cross is produced by The Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen, so if nothing else, we can at least expect it to look great.

If you miss the premiere, Battle Cross will be rebroadcast on Nov. 18 at 1:00 am EST and 10:00 am EST, and Nov. 20 at 2:30 pm EST.
The folks who bring you ABC's Wipeout have changed the network and the challengers for their next creation: called Whipped and airing on Speed in 2012, the new "automotive-based game and racing show" will put drivers in their own cars through "an intimidating automotive obstacle course."

There's an extra hook at the end, when the last challenger standing - who would normally be the winner-take-all - has to run a final obstacle course in the show's race-prepped car. Their mastery, or not, of that test "determines how much we trick out their ride." You'll find more information on the show in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Wipeout creators' new show pits your own car against crazy obstacle courses

Wipeout creators' new show pits your own car against crazy obstacle courses originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 10 Oct 2011 10:31:00 EST.
Comparisons are both unavoidable and inevitable. Tomorrow evening, SPEED debuts its all-new and highly anticipated weekly automotive television series, The Car Show. Hosted by comedian and car buff Adam Carolla, with co-hosts Dan Neil, Matt Farah and John Salley, the self-touted "ultimate car lover's show" will be scrutinized from set design to sign-off as viewers attempt to parallel its agenda and personality with the BBC UK's wildly popular Top Gear and the more recent domestically sourced Top Gear USA show from The History Channel.

The glue that will need to hold the show together is the chemistry between the hosts.

After a day spent on the set at 20th Century Fox Studios in Los Angeles last week, we left smiling and very impressed.

As expected, a decent chunk of the production is filmed outside the studio. The venues vary from public roads to race tracks (both concrete and dirt in this particular episode) and other interesting gathering spots (Carolla interviews several amusing civilians and delivers some good laughs at the Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show). However, the glue that will need to hold the show together (and keep viewers from channel surfing over to Mythbusters) is the chemistry between the hosts back in the studio. They've got a good shot at this - these guys are a witty and amusing cast of characters.

Our take is that The Car Show is a clever blend of unscripted individuality. It is a carefully calculated mix of The Man Show humor, The Smoking Tire rambunctiousness, The Wall Street Journal objectiveness and the curiosity of the The Best Damn Sports Show Period. Bring out Peter Brock with his stunning Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe MKII, a live interview with Dario Franchitti and some special guests and the hour becomes even more compelling.

Over the course of its one-hour run time, Adam Carolla intends to talk about anything and everything automotive. He, along with Dan Neil, John Salley and Matt Farah, should give the U.S. Top Gear trio a run for their money.

SPEED has a few more shows up its sleeves as well. In August, two new shows are set to premiere; Dumbest Stuff on Wheels and My Ride Rules. The former sounds like an automotive-themed version of The Soup, while the latter pits four folks against each other to see who has the best ride. Contestants will actually get to hop in each other's car to see exactly what every person's vehicle is like.

This summer marks an aggressive expansion in programming for SPEED, and The Car Show might just be one of the driving forces in a bid for increased ratings.

SPEED is betting big on its newest TV series, called The Car Show. You're most likely already aware that the program will be hosted by Adam Carolla, Dan Neil, Matt Farah and John Salley. Now, SPEED has announced that some well-known auto scribes are joining the team to pitch in on writing duty.

Aaron Robinson and Ezra Dyer have become a part of The Car Show family. Robinson is the Technical Editor at Car and Driver, while Dyer has written for a handful of publications and has a running column at Automobile. The two will add their automotive knowledge and insight to a team that already knows a good deal about cars. Well, we're sure of everyone except Salley. The Spider owns four NBA championship rings, was a member of the Chicago Bulls record-breaking 72-win season, and wasn't terrible in the film Eddie. None of that translates to cars, but we're hoping the writers stay away from attempting to squeeze his six-foot, 11-inch frame into a Mazda Miata.

There are two ways to do jet-powered vehicles. On one hand, you have the deliciously simple and effective method of strapping a used jet engine to a car or truck, and letting the thrust do the rest.

On the other, slightly more complicated side, you can attach a turbine to a shaft drive, translating the thrust to the rear wheels via a differential. Both are viable, albeit expensive, ways of adding jet propulsion to your car. But which is faster?

SPEED took it upon itself to find out, pitting a thrust-powered Chevrolet S-10 against a shaft-driven Dodge Caravan. The Caravan uses a helicopter engine hooked to its rear wheels in conjunction with its standard gas engine up front. The truck relies solely on good, old-fashioned thrust. Click past the jump to see who's faster over an eighth-mile drag strip.

Dennis Gage, host of My Classic Car on Speed TV and noted mustache aficionado, had a particularly rough Christmas this year. According to the Indianapolis Star, Gage's home in southern Indiana caught fire and was subsequently destroyed. His wife and son were home at the time but managed to escape without injury. Sitting next to the house is Gage's detached garage, which is home to several classic cars and motorcycles. The garage also escaped the fire without injury and his collection was unharmed.

That's certainly great news about his cars and bikes, but at the end of the day all of that stuff is just that - stuff - and it can be replaced. We're very happy to hear that his family made it out of the house safely and hope that the affable auto aficionado and his family rebound quickly. Thanks for the tip, beammeup1701!

The wide, wide world of sports is getting so small it'll soon be able to dance on the head of a pin. First soccer (i.e., The Other Football) took over ESPN, now the original drifting series, Japans' D1 GP, is headed to SpeedTV for a multi-episode engagement from September to November.

There will be 15 one-hour programs, nine covering races in Japan, three U.S. races, plus an exhibition and a wrap-up show. It all begins with the event in Tokyo on September 12. You'll want to turn off your smoke alarms, for burning rubber is headed this way. Follow the jump for the press release and the teaser.

Anyone who has ever spent more than 10 minutes on an automotive forum knows that a flame war is only one inflammatory comment away. Fanboys love to trash anything that doesn't carry their badge of choice, but tread on their beloved marquee and the thread turns into Niagra Falls. But rather than frown upon the typical forum vitriol, a report from the Autoblog Podcast veterans at the Hooniverse shows that Speed TV plans to give these automotive fanatics some air time instead.

The new show is called "Forum Wars," and the premise is to give these big talkers track access to replace wimpy words with tire-smoking action. You think your pristine Dodge Challenger is better than a Mustang forum owner's Bullitt? You may have a chance to take it to the track to decide who's right, once and for all. The show is scheduled to hit the airwaves on Monday, April 5, with the inaugural episode pitting a Shelby Mustang GT500 against a Nissan 350Z. Drivers will hit the bends and take on the straightaways at a drag strip, so all bases are covered. Hit the jump to view Speed TV's 30-second show promo. Looks like this show could be interesting.

If you're like me, you wish that there were more European racing on television. Remember the good old days when you could watch FIA GT and WRC on Speed TV? Well, starting on November 30 with a highlight show of the 2007 24 Hours of Le Mans, Speed TV will be airing edited footage of the 2007 Le Mans Series races in hour-long time slots. This will be our first opportunity to see the hot diesel-powered Peugeot 908 HDi in action, though it will only be going to head to head with Audi's oil burner, the R10, in the highlight show of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. As for the Le Mans races, the 1000km of Spa will air on December 3rd, followed by Monza on the 7th, Silverstone on the 10th, Valencia and the Nurburgring on the 14th, and finally Interlagos on the 17th. Do a keyword search for "Le Mans" on SpeedTV's program schedule for full listings and times.

That's how four-time Trans-Am champion Tommy Kendall introduces the new Speed TV series, Setup. He could just as well have been talking about any of the other racing "reality" shows that have preceded it. Setup is what Forza or Bullrun could have been: a straightforward examination of ten teams facing the pressure of winning a spot on the show and then working to tweak, fund and race their own Pontiac Solstice GXP, avoiding elimination through the end of the season. Think of it as a sort of America's Next Top Model for racers. The first episode aired Wednesday night and introduced us to the contestants and a few others who missed the cut. Pretty compelling stories throughout the group, and the producers wisely let the action unfold through watching and listening to the contestants..

Kendall hosts the reality series along with model/actress/racer/track rat Ashley Van Dyke. Tommy brings some star power and straight-shooting narrative, while Ashley adds much more than her pretty face, teaching the racers that winning isn't just about the driving. In the first show she brought potential sponsors into the garage to meet with drivers. And she helped us see which of the drivers could see the bigger picture and who was a spoiled little punk. Favorites and villains are already pretty obvious (we swear we wanted someone to slap some sense into that Ryan). While the premier focused mainly on driver introductions and the initial car setup, the series will also take us to the track as the racers try to earn their keep racing around Willow Springs. Over the course of the show, the ten drivers and their teams will be fighting for more than just bragging rights. The last racer standing gets $100,000, as well as a shot at a Pontiac factory ride in next year's 24 Hours of Daytona. The show airs Wednesday nights at 8 PM Eastern on Speed.

[Source: Speed TV]
Setup: America's next top racer gets $100k, Solstice ride originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 20 Apr 2007 10:07:00 EST. American iron from the '60s and '70s dominates the typical catalog. Chevelles, 'Cudas, Vettes, and Mustangs that are so rare and in such good condition that the million dollar winning bids seem almost a bargain. Sure, there are the occasional European sports cars sprinkled in, and European and American pre- and post-war classics still command strong money. But muscle cars and their high horsepower V-8s are what fill the seats nowadays. So it comes as a bit of a surprise that one of the featured collections of cars being offered in January will not only be sans V-8, but without engines entirely.

No engines doesn't mean low tech, however. The 16 featured cars are gravity racers built by the world's top auto manufacturers, including Bentley, General Motors, Nissan, Chrysler, Volkswagen, Audi, Mazda, Porsche and Pininfarina. They were a part of this year's Extreme Gravity Racing series. They will be going on the block with no reserve during the 36th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event in Scottsdale, Ariz in mid-January.

"The gravity racers are pure speedsters that embody a style of racing exhibited during the golden era of automobiles," said Craig Jackson, president of the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company. "They are engineered for raw competition and demonstrate absolute perfection, with no need for horsepower or supercharged engines. These racers represent the best of the best in automotive design and would be the crown jewel of any collection."

[Source: Barrett-Jackson via Sports Car Market]
Gravity Racers going on the block at Barrett-Jackson originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 27 Oct 2006 21:02:00 EST. The TV blog, trivialTV, stumbled upon a trademark filing by SPEED channel for Speed Garage. What is Speed Garage? The filing states it is for "downloadable television programs and audio visual content." That makes you want to stroke your billy goat beard, doesn't it? SPEED content on the web, and perhaps even FREE! We're champing at the bit to see what they have to offer.

They have speculated over at trivialTV that the Speed Garage site will be off the main SPEED TV site, somewhere near the Speed Store in the site navigation bar. If you can't wait for the Speed Garage free site, and perhaps you're not lucky enough to get the channel on satellite or cable, iTunes has some of SPEED's shows available for purchase. There are some videos on the site now, but we hope the new video site provides downloadable content as well as a more dynamic design.

Thanks for the tip, MikeV!

The list is comprised of responses from a group of automotive journalists and SPEED on-air personalities and was compiled in conjunction with the network's ten-year anniversary (has it been that long already?). The top spot is occupied by the price of gasoline rising above $3/gallon with the fall of domestic automakers following close behind. The list in its entirety is as follows.

1. Gasoline tops $3 a gallon
2. Fall of domestic dominance
3. Dale Earnhardt crash at Daytona
4. Retro-inspired cars
5. eBay Motors
6. Barrett-Jackson Auctions
7. Ford vs. Firestone
8. Comeback of the Mini
9. Boom of the Supercars
10. "Trick", "Dub", "Pimp" and Whip"

So what's missing? There's no mention of the sport compact craze, Ford's Mustang surviving the great muscle car massacre, the return of Bob Lutz, the Koreans coming on strong. What else is missing?

[Source: Sports Car Network]
Top Ten... auto-related stories of the past decade originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 28 Jun 2006 16:39:00 EST.
