The all-electric Smart EDs may not be here yet, but a companion app for the little city cars is already available in the iTunes App Store [$9.99 for the U.S version, $11.99 for the EU version]. 8Report: Smart Forfour, when it comes, will probably come to U.S.

Daimler chief executive officer Dieter Zetsche admitted yesterday that his company's Smart brand was in trouble without a small car partner. Luckily, that's just what he got in the Nissan-Renault announcement. Now that Smart's future is protected, speculation is turning to the revived Smart Forfour (previous generation pictured), which we've heard about for years. Zetsche has told Automotive News that a four-seat Smart will likely be sold in the U.S. once the new triangular partnership develops

At a news conference in Brussels, Belgium this morning, Daimler AG and the Renault-Nissan alliance officially announced that the three automakers would collaborate on future products and each would exchange shares in the other companies. The deal has been rumored for months and Daimler has been looking for years for a partner to help spread out the costs of small car development.

Daimler rang in the new year with an online design contest called "Style your Smart." Apparently, the idea of decorating a virtual Smart Fortwo appeals to a lot of people, since 50,000 design ideas we submitted by over 8,000 people from 100+ countries. The winner, pictured above, was submitted by Tamir Shefer from Jaffa, Israel. For his entry, Shefer will get €1,500 (about $2,000 USD) and had his car described on the contest website as:

7Smart uses hot dog costumes, street gamblers to lure customers

Why not spend your time at the computer pretending to be maneuvering around a city? That seems to be the question Smart's latest advertising campaign is asking. But Daimler is actually interested in a different question. For some reason, Daimler thinks men dressed in hot dog suits and street gamblers are enough to make people click around their interactive site and find the answer to, "the question that everyone asks: 'What happened?'"
