<br />
The world's sickly economy not withstanding, selling luxury vehicles is easy. From the suppleness of a swatch of leather to the exquisite graining on a piece of rare wood veneer to having every electronic gewgaw available at one's fingertips, what defines a luxury car is essentially self-evident. To a substantial degree, everyone knows quality and true luxury when they see and feel it. The same cannot be so easily said when it comes to matters of high performance.<br />
<br />
<div style="border: 0px dotted black; margin: 5px; padding: 2px 3px; color: rgb(153, 0, 0); line-height: 120%; font-size: 1.5em; float: right; width: 220px; text-align: center;"><strong>Selling luxury may be easy, but as AMG has figured out, selling high-performance is a heck of a lot more fun. </strong></div>
As one of the globe's premiere aspirational brands, Mercedes-Benz would appear to have the luxury selling routine knocked. But the company's AMG performance division has become an increasingly prominent part of its portfolio and bottom line, and these vehicles attract a different sort of customer and require a different marketing approach. Thankfully, as AMG has become increasingly important to Mercedes, its product line has risen in quality and dynamic performance. But while luxury and quality are easily conveyed, how do you sell four-wheeled thrills?<br />
<br />
The thing is, as an automotive marketer, you can preach how great your sports car is until you're blue in the face, but until you're able to really <em>show</em> people how superior your vehicle is, you're never going to win them all over. And if you're like AMG, your offerings have become way too fast and capable to be safely exploited on public roads. So what's Mercedes to do? Why, give current and potential owners the chance to explore the dynamic limits of both their automobiles and themselves in a fun, legal, educational, and most importantly, safe environment. Enter the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/24/coming-to-america-mercedes-amg-driving-academy-complete-with-s/">AMG Driving Academy</a>. <br />
<br />
Mercedes has offered its AMG driving program overseas for some time now, but this year is the first time they've brought the experience to the States. With events at Connecticut's storied Lime Rock Park, Florida's Palm Beach International Raceway, and California's legendary Laguna Seca, the venues Mercedes has chosen are certainly top-notch. But what about the experience? We had to find out for ourselves.<br />

<br />Finding the ideal luxury sports car is a Goldilocks proposition: cars that fulfill either descriptive - luxury or sports - are piled high as Annapurna. For instance, the Ferrari F430 is a luxurious sports car, but it's not a luxury car. The current CL63 is a sporty luxury car, but it's not a sports car. Try to find a conveyance in which the little girl with the golden locks would sigh "This one is just right" - a car that has the sporting reflexes to keep her heart beating and a cabin supple enough for her to unwind in when the twisties are finished - and you see the field is disturbingly minuscule. Against all odds, the SL63 is that car: Goldilocks' Golden Mean. Follow the jump to find out how and why, and check out the gallery of high-res images below.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-mercedes-benz-sl63/low/">Review: 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-mercedes-benz-sl63/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/sl63_amg_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-mercedes-benz-sl63/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/sl63_amg_06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-mercedes-benz-sl63/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/sl63_amg_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-mercedes-benz-sl63/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/sl63_amg_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-mercedes-benz-sl63/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/10/sl63_amg_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><span class="misspell" suggestions="Mazda's,Mazda,Mada's,Masada's,Maydays"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"><small>Photos Copyright (C)2008 Jonathon Ramsey / Weblogs, Inc.</small></span></span><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/16/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-mercedes-sl63-amg-and-sl600/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Review: 2009 Mercedes SL63 AMG and SL600</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/16/in-the-autoblog-garage-2008-mercedes-sl63-amg-and-sl600/">Review: 2009 Mercedes SL63 AMG and SL600</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 11:57:00 EST. This would seem to be the question its engineers ask themselves before they stuff ludicrous amounts of power under the hoods of Mercedes-Benz cars and trucks. <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/06/27/brabus-builds-world-s-fastest-sedan-again/">This</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/26/brabus-does-the-new-c-class/">behavior</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/08/21/brabus-gl-class-sports-up-to-462-hp/">is</a> <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/22/brabus-turns-up-the-heat-on-the-new-mercedes-benz-slk/">well</a>-<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/06/wider-ist-better-550-hp-brabus-widestar-the-ultimate-ml63/">documented</a>, and it continues unabated with the arrival of MB's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/31/officially-official-mercedes-benz-unveils-updated-sl/">new SL</a>. Full wheel/tire, interior, and styling packages are a given. Backing up those enhanced looks is an assortment of tuning packages capable of providing more power than even <a href="http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Montgomery_Scott">Montgomery Scott</a> could ever plead for. <br /><br />The SV12 S Biturbo engine swap appears to have been created by someone with a severe, pathological hatred for tires. This is the same engine used in the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/12/frankfurt-2007-brabus-bullit-live-and-brutally-insane/">Brabus Bullit</a>, and it dishes out a predictably ridiculous 720 horsepower and 973 lb-ft of torque. The latter number is electronically restrained to a mere 811 lb-ft., and a top speed of well over 200 mph comes with the territory. Not interested in the full swap? No worries, BRABUS has your back. SL 65 AMG drivers can opt for the T 65 S package, which bumps the stock V12 Biturbo to 705 hp/811 lb-ft. There's a solution for the all-motor SL 63 AMG as well that packs on an additional 40 horses over stock. This pattern continues right on down the line -- even the "lowly" V6-powered cars can be tuned to deliver 327 hp/ 310 lb-ft. Bonkers. Er, BRABUS, rather. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-brabus-sl/low/">2009 BRABUS SL</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-brabus-sl/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/brabus_08sl_1280_07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-brabus-sl/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/brabus_08sl_1280_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-brabus-sl/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/brabus_08sl_1280_14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-brabus-sl/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/brabus_08sl_1280_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-brabus-sl/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/05/brabus_08sl_1280_10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: BRABUS]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/07/brabus-tunes-new-mercedes-benz-sl-to-reliably-insane-levels/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BRABUS tunes new Mercedes-Benz SL to reliably insane levels</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/07/brabus-tunes-new-mercedes-benz-sl-to-reliably-insane-levels/">BRABUS tunes new Mercedes-Benz SL to reliably insane levels</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 07 May 2008 14:57:00 EST. The CLK Safety Car of last year has been retired, and in its place is a modified SL 63 AMG. Beyond the usual Safety Car markings and lighting, this 525-horsepower SL sports a front fascia that's modified to allow for extra cooling requirements, composite brakes, carbon fiber body panels, as well as a redesigned rear diffuser insert. Since the SL won't be used for open-top cruising, the entire top mechanism has been ditched, and its roof remains in the upright position. That, plus additional weight reduction measures, shave a hefty 485 pounds (220 kilos) off the AMG SL, making it lighter than the production version even when you take the emergency lighting, communications gear, and other Safety Car-specific mods into account. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/c-63-amg-estate-f1-medical-car/687635/"><img width="250" vspace="4" hspace="4" height="169" border="1" align="right" alt="2008 F1 Medical Car - C63 AMG Estate" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/amg_f1_safemed_01_vlo.jpg" /></a>The Safety Car will be joined by the 457-horsepower C63 AMG Estate Medical Car. The Medical Car carries a team of four and a full suite of emergency equipment as it shadows the competitors on Lap 1 of each race (generally the diciest) and is intended to be the first vehicle on scene in the event of an accident. Like the SL63 Safety Car, the Medical Car wears a revised front fascia and rear diffuser, both of which are required for the car to meet its enhanced cooling needs. It too uses the AMG Performance Braking System, with composite brakes providing maximum stopping power. As you'll see in the attached gallery, both cars feature a pair of monitors in the instrument panel that allow the safety and medical teams to follow the race from inside the vehicles so they can be ready to move the moment an incident occurs. Look for both machines next weekend as the 2008 F1 campaign kicks off in Australia. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/sl63-amg-f1-safety-car/low/">SL63 AMG F1 Safety Car</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/sl63-amg-f1-safety-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/amg_f1_safemed_07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/sl63-amg-f1-safety-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/amg_f1_safemed_08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/sl63-amg-f1-safety-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/amg_f1_safemed_09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/sl63-amg-f1-safety-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/amg_f1_safemed_10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/sl63-amg-f1-safety-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/amg_f1_safemed_11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/c-63-amg-estate-f1-medical-car/low/">C 63 AMG Estate F1 Medical Car</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/c-63-amg-estate-f1-medical-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/amg_f1_safemed_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/c-63-amg-estate-f1-medical-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/amg_f1_safemed_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/c-63-amg-estate-f1-medical-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/amg_f1_safemed_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/c-63-amg-estate-f1-medical-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/amg_f1_safemed_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/c-63-amg-estate-f1-medical-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/amg_f1_safemed_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: Mercedes-Benz]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/03/07/amg-stands-guard-at-every-f1-race-this-season/">New AMG Safety and Medical cars stand guard at every F1 race this season</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 07 Mar 2008 12:56:00 EST. Gone is the supercharged, 510-horsepower <a href="http://www.mbusa.com/models/main.do?modelCode=SL55">SL55 AMG</a>. In its place, we welcome the new SL63 AMG, which uses AMG's naturally-aspirated 6.2L V8 making 538 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Like its standard-grade siblings, the new AMG SL is restyled, featuring a new-look fascia, side gills and revised rump. AMG-specific elements like a unique hood, a full aero kit, wheels that look lifted from a Porsche 911 Turbo, and all the requisite badging are also included. Inside, leather and carbon fiber adorn the cockpit, which is also outfitted with the usual assortment of electro-gadgetry, including Bluetooth connectivity that'll work with any phone so enabled.<br /><br />The big news with the new SL63 is the addition of Mercedes' seven-speed twin-clutch SpeedShift MCT (Multi-Clutch Transmission) with four drive modes. Shifts with the MCT are promised to be smoother, faster and more fun overall than before. Fun's good. An optional performance package adds party favors like ceramic front brake discs, an AMG-enhanced version of the Active Body Control system, unequal-width front and rear tires, a limited-slip rear differential, a flat-bottomed steering wheel with metal shift paddles, and the AIRSCARF neck warmer system. <br /><br />If the 538 horses of the SL63 aren't enough, or if you're just hell-bent on winning the numerological pissing contest in your law firm's parking garage, Mercedes also brings back the SL65 AMG, whose turbocharged V12 cranks out 604 horsepower and a BRABUS-like 738 lb-ft of torque. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but rest assured, it'll be up there. <br /><br />[Source: Mercedes-Benz]<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl63-amg-and-sl65-amg/low/">2009 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG &amp; SL65 AMG</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl63-amg-and-sl65-amg/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/sl63_amg_live_gen03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl63-amg-and-sl65-amg/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/sl63_amg_live_gen01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl63-amg-and-sl65-amg/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/sl63_amg_live_gen02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl63-amg-and-sl65-amg/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/06merc_sl63_gen06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-mercedes-benz-sl63-amg-and-sl65-amg/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/03/04merc_sl63_gen04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/08/officially-official-mercedes-benz-unveils-2009-sl63-and-sl65-am/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Officially Official: Mercedes-Benz unveils 2009 SL63 and SL65 AMG</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/08/officially-official-mercedes-benz-unveils-2009-sl63-and-sl65-am/">Officially Official: Mercedes-Benz unveils 2009 SL63 and SL65 AMG</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 08 Feb 2008 01:11:00 EST.
