Look quickly, and you'll miss the changes, but GM's got some subtle exterior tweaks in store for its Heavy Duty trucks in 2010. Development doesn't stop even though the practice of using a pickup truck as a commuter car is no longer popular, so GM is plugging away at a new Silverado to avoid being passed up by its competitors.

Competition aside, there's also the issue of federal regulations to comply with, so changes were necessary no matter what. Most noticeably, the bumper changes, gaining a strip of trim that extends across the top, doing away with the overemphasized corner look of the current cow catcher. Looking more closely at the bumper, the air intake in the middle appears to have grown in size. That opening feeds the transmission cooler, so the speculation is that the Allison transmission has picked up extra ratios. Of course, it could just be bigger to gain an edge on thermal management underhood, but we're going to jump on the bandwagon of being excited for more cogs spun by the heavily revised 6.6-liter Duramax diesel with urea injection. That'd be just the thing to tow the Alero.

In case you've forgotten, Chevy would like to remind you that this IS your Country (Music Edition Silverado). Used as a rolling stage at various country music events, the country-fied Silverado 3500HD features lighting and power outlets hidden under the bed cover. Pop it open, and an insta-venue is available for impromptu performances. Chrome wheels, music-themed body graphics, and an interior redone with aniline leather and mother of pearl inlays complete the package. Driving this thing must be like entering into Country/Western immersion therapy. By the end of your journey, you'll be humming Waylon Jennings tunes you'd never heard before, have picked up an accent, and spontaneously grown a Resistol on your noggin. And for fun, you'll have used the 600+ pounds of torque on offer from the 6.6L Duramax to cook any semblance of a tread pattern off the low profile rubber wrapped around the duallys in back. Toyota Tundra race team wears bowtie to Texas State Fair

It's during moments like these that you know Toyota wishes it had a heavy-duty version of the Tundra. While the currently-available versions are capable of rescuing shipping containers in distress, and can make like the Millenium Falcon escaping from a giant space slug, they cannot haul the transporter that carries the Tundra race trucks. As our friends at Jalopnik show, at the Texas State Fair, that task is left to the maximum-cojones of a Chevy Silverado 3500 HD. Oh, what a feeling... of humiliation.
