Ever thought about how much CO2 is being emitted from Santa's reindeer? Neither have we, but Ford has. The folks at the Blue Oval figured out that Chris Kringle's road crew drops a knee-wobbling 214,670 tons of CO2 each year while delivering presents to 267 million homes.

Those are sobering statistics, so Ford decided to fight back with EcoBoost power. The Ford design team started with the Evos concept morphed into an imaginary Santa-worthy sled. Under the hood rests a 123-horsepower, 125 pound-foot 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine that reduces CO2 by 191,843 tons. This new sled is obviously good for the environment, but we're guessing the reindeer union is going to lose its lunch over this one.

Ford also interviewed Mrs. Claus for her thoughts on the new sled. Santa's significant other likes the boosted 1.0-liter and even pointed out that the new sled would afford The Big Guy extra time to reconsider the naughty list, meaning there's still a glimmer of hope for the MyFord Touch team.

You better watch out, you better not cry. You better not pout, I'm telling you why: One day, Santa Claus himself might pull you from your burning Ford Explorer Sport Trac before you're engulfed in flames. Brad Luddeke was on his way to deliver gifts to needy children when he came upon an accident just outside of Dallas, Texas. Luddeke saw the vehicle was beginning to catch fire and helped pull the man from the vehicle before the flames consumed the rest of the truck. No one was seriously harmed in the incident, but Luddeke wasn't through performing his good deeds for the day.

The good Samaritan then proceeded to direct traffic through the smoke-filled intersection to prevent another collision. Something tells us the former fire fighter has definitely made the 'Nice' list this year. Click past the jump to view a quick clip of Santa's traffic-directing skills in action.
Continue reading Santa saves man from burning pickup, directs traffic

Santa saves man from burning pickup, directs traffic originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 13:29:00 EST.
Concept sleighs for Santa by Jaguar and Land Rover -- Click above for high-res image gallery

For the past couple of years, Car magazine has gathered renderings from designers envisioning Kris Kringle's sleigh. Last year it was Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Ford, and Nissan. This year, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Audi, Land Rover, and Jaguar submitted their Santa-ships, and the results are predictably outrageous.

The Jag and Land Rover cruisers might make you think they got their sexy back. Jag's design features the unlikely addition of twin, rear-mounted propellers (which might make rooftop landings a little difficult -- and noisy) and a painted mascot on its forward flanks that is definitely not Mrs. Claus. The Land Rover snowspeeder-thingy has particle accelerators, and those are always sexy, and we dig Santa's pose with that cigar, looking straight out of a Hugh Hefner photo shoot. We have a feeling that Hef, however, wouldn't have a reindeer in that front seat...

Speaking of which, we'd be interested in finding out why some car designers think Santa wants to tackle his annual delivery route with one single reindeer riding shotgun. You can have a look at the JLR sleighs below, and click here to check out the rest at Car.

Santa's high tech sleigh by GE -- Click above to check out the specs

General Motors gave Santa a sleigh with OnStar and a reindeer monitor. General Electric must have seen that video and said, "Hold on a second," because they created a sleigh for the big red man with icephobic coatings, self-powered OLED lighting, ceramic matrix composite blades, GE sodium batteries, Trip Optimizer, and a 500GB holographic disc that holds 200 DVDs worth of information.

Santa's suit gets in on the Iron Man act, too, with a wearable RFID sensor hidden in the fringed getup as well as a wireless medical sensor, because Mr. Kringle's Body Mass Index is out of control. And since elves are notorious worriers, they get Asset Intelligence Tracking Tech to keep Santa on the radar and out of Vegas.

But for all that, GE didn't include a blue button so the kiddies could keep track of him...

OnStar has provided nothing but good press lately for General Motors, and the automaker is going to ride that pony all the way to the finish. The next person in line to take advantage of OnStar's benefits is that Arctic gadget freak himself, Santa Claus. Unveiled as an installed option on his new sleigh - which he picked up when he dropped by OnStar HQ - it comes with at least one extra feature you won't be getting anytime soon: a reindeer health meter.

But you haven't been left out of the bonanza. GM has partnered with NORAD so that if you have an OnStar subscription, you can keep track of K. Kringle during his midnight run. From 6 a.m. on Christmas Eve until early Christmas morning, press the blue button and OnStar will update you on the hour with info relayed by the guys deep in the mountain.

It's not a Red Ryder BB gun with a compass in the stock, but it's a start. Follow the jump for the press release and watch Santa get his Christmas present.

[Source: OnStar]
Continue reading VIDEO: Gag Me With a Yule Log - GM allows kids to track Santa Claus via Onstar

VIDEO: Gag Me With a Yule Log - GM allows kids to track Santa Claus via Onstar originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 20:00:00 EST.
Thanks to CAR and a few masters of vehicular design, Santa is bringing some serious automotive enthusiast cheer. The glossy euro mag asked designers from Ford, Bentley, Nissan and Rolls-Royce to design some sleighs for Santa, and while a few of them look to be from the land of misfit toys -- and one of them looks like Santa's Death Star -- it's a fabulously cool exercise. Nissan's intergalactic sleigh is pulled by a GT-R, Bentley's got a W12-powered sled, Ford's got some popout snowboard action happening, and the Rolls sleigh looks, of course, like Santa should have a snifter of Louis XIV in one delicately gloved hand while an elf named Jeeves tends the Smythson leather reins. Check them all out here.

[Source: CAR]
Automakers tapped by CAR to redesign Santa's sled originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 18 Dec 2008 09:58:00 EST.
After centuries of counting on eight reindeer (unless there is fog), it appears as though Santa Claus has instead opted for the internal combustion engine. To traverse the sometimes tight airways around metropolitan areas, good ol' Saint Nick decided the nimble nature of the BMW 1-Series was best-fitted to do the job.

The boys and girls of team Bimmer have decided that the best way to sell the 1-Series on their home turf during the holiday season is to involve the biggest commercial icon of Christmas. As you can see above, Santa is haulin' ... presents, and the smallest four-wheeler from the Bavarian Motor Werks is leading the way. St. Nick is going so fast, all the vowels have left the billboard. If this doesn't keep awake the children of Hamburg, we don't know what will. Imagine trying to sleep when every car that drives by makes you think Santa is pulling into your driveway. Heck, we're sure there are a lot of parents hoping to get the little BMW coupe for Christmas, too.
