The hot new 2012 Audi S7 is certainly worthy of your attention (and your drool), but if swoopy hatchbacks aren't your thing, perhaps the svelte new S6 will pique your interest. After all, it packs the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 as the S7, cranks out the same 420 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, and has the same list of technological gadgets to keep you and your passengers entertained.

The S7 may be the more eye-catching of the two cars, but we'd be out of our minds to ever kick this thing out of bed. See the bright red hotness for yourself in the attached high-res image gallery and the particulars in the official release after the jump.
Continue reading 2012 Audi S6 gets the 4.0L twin-turbo treatment

2012 Audi S6 gets the 4.0L twin-turbo treatment originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 10:42:00 EST.
When Audi introduces a new S model, enthusiasts sit up straight and listen. Don't even ask what happens when the German automaker rolls out two at a time, let alone three or four. But that's what Ingolstadt has in store for us in Frankfurt this year.

Once the show opens in a couple of weeks from now, we'll have a new S6 (both sedan and Avant wagon), S7 and S8 on our hands. And they're looking pretty sweet so far.

At the top of the heap is the new S8 sedan, which adopts the new twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that Audi has developed with Bentley, driving all four wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox. With 520 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque on tap, the big sedan is said to be good for a hugely fast 4.2-second sprint to 62 miles per hour and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

The S6 and S7, meanwhile, get a detuned version of the same turbo eight with 420 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, good for 4.8 and 4.9-second acceleration runs, respectively. Cylinder deactivation and an active noise cancelation system are also part of the package on the entire range, and we're anticipating getting each of these models - minus the S6 Avant - in American showrooms.

There's plenty more to delve into in the press release after the jump, so hop on in, and don't miss the high-resolution image gallery for a closer look.
Continue reading Audi S6, S7 and S8 revealed ahead of Frankfurt debut

Audi S6, S7 and S8 revealed ahead of Frankfurt debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 31 Aug 2011 01:31:00 EST.
While crossovers dominate the American highway, that role is taken up overseas by estate wagons. And few are as enticing as the Audi S6 Avant.

Offering all the creature comforts of the Audi A6, the S6 Avant ups the ante with all the cargo space you'd expect in a crossover with a rip-roarin' engine under the hood. In the case of the new model, we're expecting an all-new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 driving some 450 horsepower to all four corners through an eight-speed automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive.

In other words, that Porsche driver will never know what hit him, but with this latest batch of spy shots, we now do. It's the clearest look we've had at the upcoming new model yet, revealing the quad exhaust tips, full aero body kit, big-boy wheels and no cladding. All it needs are a set of S6 badges and it's off for a record-setting school run. Check it out in our high-res gallery for a closer look.
Audi S6 Avant looks ready to smoke your crossover originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Jul 2011 13:01:00 EST.
German publication Autobild has reportedly acquired some powertrain details about a few upcoming Audi models, including the S6, S7 and S8. Apparently we can expect a twin-turbocharged V8 packing up to 500 horsepower in the S8, while the S6 and S7 will get 440 and 470 horsepower, respectively.

Toward the end of 2012, Audi will unleash the RS6, which will carry a BMW M5-besting, 580-horsepower version of the same twin-turbo mill powering the S6. We still don't know how big the proposed engine is - earlier reports have suggested that a 4.0-liter V8 is in store - but it should get 20 percent better fuel economy than the outgoing naturally aspirated V10.
Audi S6/RS6, S7, S8 power numbers revealed originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Jun 2011 13:31:00 EST.
The Audi S lineup is not a world filled with many choices. Sure, you can pick your poison in terms of which S vehicle you want, but you do not have a say in which engine is mounted under the hood. However, it seems the upcoming Audi S6 and S7 might be poised to break with that tradition.

Rumor has it that the more athletic versions of the A6 and A7 will be offered with a choice of engines. The standard engine for both cars is slated to be a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 with around 450 horsepower, but Audi is reportedly going to offer up a diesel, as well, marking the first time such an engine has been offered with an S-branded vehicle. This 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 should be good for 300 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque.

*Update: Apparently, this one is too good to be true - kind of. The cars will be available with the diesel lumps, but the badging will keep the A and not wear an S. Regardless, we're excited to see more sporty diesels arrive stateside.
Audi S6 and S7 to offer diesel engines *UPDATE originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 May 2011 13:01:00 EST. Got a hankering to own an Audi from the beginning of the Aughts? If you're hunting for an example that wears a model badge with the number "6," you might want to have a mechanic take a look its nipples. More specifically, make sure the rollover valve in the fuel system has been given proper attention, otherwise the nipple can become cracked and lead to fuel winding up on the ground instead of feeding the engine.

Audi and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have just announced a recall for specific years of the Audi A6, S6 and RS6. This recall affects 2001-2004 A6 models, 2002-2003 S6 models and the 2003 RS6. Up to 5,992 vehicles are potentially affected by this action. Click past the jump for the official recall announcement with more details.
Continue reading Audi recalls A6, S6, RS6 over possible fuel tank issue

Audi recalls A6, S6, RS6 over possible fuel tank issue originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 09 May 2011 17:19:00 EST.
In addition to a hybrid version, Audi is giving its sleek new A6 the full S treatment. Our spy photographers recently snapped this completely undisguised prototype out testing in Germany, leading us to believe that the production car will likely debut in the not-too-distant future. Audi's usual S up-do is fully evident here, with the more aggressive front fascia, side sill extension and four exhaust tips out back all signaling a more sporting sedan.

The new S6 will likely ditch the current car's 5.2-liter V10 mill in favor of a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. Since the S6 will compete with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and BMW M5, expect power output to be somewhere in the 500- to 550-horsepower range.

BYD S6 DM - Click above for high-res image gallery

Whenever we hear that a Chinese automaker is working on a vehicle that's "influenced" by some other successful model from an established global company, we wince a little. After all, we've seen quite a few less-than-convincing attempts to go along with a few couldn't-tell-the-difference carbon copies. And neither of those options are acceptable.

From what we can tell, BYD's S6 (shh - don't tell Audi) DM crossover could be considered a little of both. From the profile, you'd be forgiven for mistaking it for a couple-year-old Lexus RX. From the front, we see clear influence from General Motors' European arm, Opel. That said, it appears to be a passable effort on the styling front, and it's what's underneath that derivative skin that's what really counts.

The DM in the 'utes name stands for Dual Mode, as in a hybrid that can be powered by electricity only or a combination of the electric motors and gasoline engine. The drivetrain consists of a 14-horsepower electric motor that powers the front wheels and a 102-horsepower gasoline engine powering the rears. That's not a lot of power, but at least the two systems can work together to offer all-wheel drive.

We'll be on the lookout for this machine at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show next week. In the meantime, check out a few images in our gallery below.

The 2011 A8 is the harbinger of things to come from Audi's award winning interiors, and the release of an additional spy shot of the S7's insides proves that the new navigation screen found in the automaker's flagship is set to proliferate throughout the Audi line-up.

As you can see in the image above, the seven-inch display that rises from the dash is fitted to the recently spied S7, and will also be included on the standard A7 when it goes on sale next year. The MMI Touch Pad, which also debuted on the all-new A8 and allows user to draw letters and numbers to control the navigation, phone and other systems, is likely to be an option on the A7/S7, along with the new A6. And speaking of the A6...

Audi's mid-sizer has been around since 2004, with an updated model bowing two years later, so it stands to reason that an all-new A6 is coming soon. Judging by the automaker's product cycles, we're expecting the 2012 A6 to bow in Detroit or as early as the Paris Motor Show and go on sale sometime towards the middle of 2011.
Audi bringing new nav display, optional Touch Pad to 2012 A6 and A7/S7 originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 19 May 2010 15:29:00 EST.
Chrysler 300 S8 - Click above for high-res image gallery

Chrysler made one of the past decade's strongest design statements with the 2005 introduction of the 300. The rear-wheel-drive sedan with blocky styling was a knockout with both the general consumer and, maybe more specifically, the aftermarket. Five years on and the 300 is still a SEMA favorite.

Sometimes, modded 300s look pretty swank. Of course, sometimes not so much. If you're standing in Chrysler's shoes, obviously you want to muscle in on this market. Meet the 300 S6 and 300 S8. Essentially, these two cars are appearance packages. However, we think they're great looking appearance packs.

The big difference between the new cars (both are badged with "300 S" instead of the more Audi-infringing S6 and S8 monikers) and the regular 300 is the grille. Gone are the full chromed snouts of the normal 300s, in are blacked-out grilles with chrome surrounds and body-colored accents. The doors are "shaved," the mirrors are body-colored and the headlight bezels are darkened. And, of course, the 20-inch wheels are highly polished.

The interior is also done up in low-key bling. There's a carbon weave steering wheel with red stitching and silver spokes, "track-tested" leather seats with a "300 S" logo with perforated suede inserts. The door handles are also done up in carbon weave with red stitching - a cool, thorough touch.

If you're wondering what the difference is between the two special edition models themselves, the 300 S6 comes with a 3.5-liter V6 (250 horsepower, 250 pound-feet of torque) and the 300 S8 comes with the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 (340 hp, 390 lb-ft of torque). Visually, the difference is quite slight. The 300 S8 has twin pipes and nearly solid-red taillights, while the 300 S6's rear lights feature a clear round circle. Also, we called Audi to ask about infringement on their S6 and S8 names. "No comment."

2010 Chrysler 300 S8 - Click above for high-res image gallery

Chrysler has carefully picked its words, saying that the 300 S6 and 300 S8 are all-new models that build on the rear-wheel-drive sedan's roots. Don't fret, the cosmetic updates are welcome; there's a new blacked-out grille this year and 20-inch alloys to fill out those classic bold wheelarches. The S6 and S8, while blatantly ripping off Audi nomenclature (do we smell a lawsuit?), denotes whether the car's packing a six- or eight-cylinder powerplant.

Interiors have been updated as well, and the words that Chrysler chose to describe them make them sound like Xanadu on wheels. In the pictures, however, the changes appear to include more heavily bolstered seats with embroidered logos and leather and cloth surfaces. The dashboard and other surfaces don't seem to be much different than what we've criticized in the past, though it could be the same design (which is fine) just rendered in improved materials.

Other vehicles are also coming in for a refreshing in 2010. The continually dead/not-dead PT Cruiser gets a Couture Edition with a dressed up interior and two-tone paint. The Town & Country Walter P. Chrysler Signature Series also looks to get much-needed interior attention, though we'll only be convinced of its quality after running our mitts over the nicely-photographed wares.

Gallery: 2010 Special Edition Chrysler models

[Source: Chrysler]
Continue reading Chrysler reveals slew of special-edition models for 2010

Chrysler reveals slew of special-edition models for 2010 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Jan 2010 11:01:00 EST.
Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2009 Audi A6

Audi's upgraded A6 and S6 are scheduled to hit US dealerships in January, and the four-ringed midsize sedan has new pricing to match its upgraded powertrains. The A6 3.2 premium stars at $45,100, a price bump of over $2,000 over the 2008 model. The newest member of the A6 family, which comes with a 300 hp supercharged 3.0L V6 and standard quattro AWD, starts at $53,310. That's $3,000 less than the starting price of the previous generation 4.2L V8, which packed more punch at 350 hp, but the 3.0T fights back with more low-end grunt and far better fuel economy. It manages 26/21, while the outgoing V8 averages 23 on the highway and 16 around town. The 3.0T will also hit 60 in 5.9 seconds, so it's no slouch on the track.

The top-level S6 prices out at $75,900, or $3,500 more than the outgoing model. The S6 will carry-over the 435 hp 5.2L V10 powerplant, which definitely isn't a bad thing. Given the unfavorable exchange rate between the euro and dollar, we're not surprised to see prices go up on the A6 3.2 and S6 models. It's nice to see an actual price decrease from the 3.0T versus its V8-powered predecessor, with vastly improved efficiency to boot. Hit the jump to pour over Audi's press release.

Gallery: 2009 Audi A6

[Source: Audi]
Continue reading Audi Prices A6/S6 starting at $45,100/$75,900

Audi Prices A6/S6 starting at $45,100/$75,900 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 19 Dec 2008 16:58:00 EST. According to Car, the next iteration of Audi's Aluminum and Steel Spaceframe (ASF II) technology will be utilized on all future models, and uses half the steel of the outgoing platforms while providing 50-percent more torsional rigidity. The passenger cell will be made up entirely of aluminum, with steel and foam reinforcements if needed, and the front and rear subframes will be beefed up units integrated into the structures of the nose and tail. The ASF II system will finds its way into other vehicles, including Audi's CUVs, where it has the potential to shave off over 650 pounds from the Q7's curb weight.

Naturally, Audi will continue to offer front- and all-wheel-drive on the next A6, but the combination of more potent mills mounted further back into the engine bay will lessen its rival's lead in the handling department. Car's sources suggest that a variety of V6 engines, ranging from 2.8- to 3.2-liters will be offered, along with a pair of diesels, the 4.2-liter FSI V8 found in the RS4/R8, the 5.2-liter V10 (S6) and a twin-turbo 5.0-liter V10 for the RS6.

[Source: Car]
Next Audi A6 to feature new lightweight construction inspired by TT originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 16 May 2008 14:29:00 EST. The RS6 has been sighted donning heavy camo all over the free world, and after the jump we have video of a virtually undisguised RS6 Avant doing a powerslide at a bend of the famed Nürburgring Nordshcleife. The video is almost as quick as the RS6, but if you like screaming engines and squealing tires, it's worth a watch. Heck, part of the reason we're flying all the way over to the Frankfurt Motor Show is to see Audi's fastest ever sedan and wagon.

[Source: Carscoop]
Continue reading VIDEO: Audi RS6 Avant drifting round the 'Ring

VIDEO: Audi RS6 Avant drifting round the 'Ring originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 05 Sep 2007 21:37:00 EST. We already know that the new A4 will be one of them, but what of the other? We doubt that the refreshed S8 deserves inclusion into that duo, and the rumblings around the interwebs point to the new RS6, producing upwards of 600 ponies via a rumored twin-turbo V10. We'll be on hand for the festivities, so as always, watch this space.

[Source: Audi]
Continue reading Audi bringing two new models to Frankfurt, possibly RS6

Audi bringing two new models to Frankfurt, possibly RS6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 30 Aug 2007 13:55:00 EST. Those wonderfully crazy Germans are set to add forced induction to the already balls-out 5.2L V10 that powers the more "pedestrian" S6, and somewhere around 550hp will be the end result. Other changes include oval tail pipes like those seen on the production RS4, a rear diffuser, and a larger front air intake. The changes are still pretty subtle, though, as Audi seems to cherish the role of sleeper.

Brenda Priddy and co. have once again snagged some great shots of the RS6, but this time we get motion picture strait from the 'Ring. Wait till you see this midsize monster absolutely cranking around the Green Hell's many bends -- the sights and sounds are astonishingly good. Hit play above to catch the action.

[Source: StreetFire]
Spy Video: Audi RS6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 16 Jun 2007 17:27:00 EST. With an absurdly wicked 5.2L V10 powerplant that's rumored to receive the turbo treatment to kick out well over 500hp, the RS6 looks like it's preparing to meet the M5 and AMG E-Class head-on.

The folks over at KGP Photography got some good pictures of the RS6 running the 'Ring, and there are subtle differences between it and the S6. The oval-tipped tailpipes and RS4-style rims fare immediate tiopoffs that something's afoot. The front air intake also appears to be tweaked, with its LED lighting apparently removed. The fenders have also been pushed out to accomodate larger wheels.

Does Audi want to rule the luxury world? Looks like it to us, and an RS6 that will be able to take on even the most formidable opponent is part of the plan. The car will duke it out with some pretty stiff marketplace competition, but in the end, we think the ultimate winners are customers who can afford $80,000 to $100,000 vehicles.

[Source: Inside Line]
Spy Shots: Audi RS6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 May 2007 08:03:00 EST. That's why it's working on returning the RS6 to the lineup. The new RS6 was caught by Brenda Priddy's spies doing laps on the Nurburgring in Germany. Wearing a migrane-inducing camo pattern, the RS6 is distinguished by fenders that push out wider to handle larger wheels and a rear diffuser that houses a pair of oval tailpipes. As the linked article indicates, while the S model sports four round tips, RS models stand out with these oval pipes. There was no mention of what may power the RS6, though it needs to be pretty hot motor to best the detuned V10 from the Lamborghini Gallardo that powers the S6. We've heard rumors of a twin-turbo version of the V10 producing between 500 and 550 horsepower, though other mills are being considered, too.

Thanks for the tip, Zerin!

[Source: Speedsportlife.com]
Spy Shots: Audi RS6 on the 'Ring originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 29 Mar 2007 15:04:00 EST. We previously thought the RS6 may get the Q7's top petrol engine, a 4.2-liter FSI V8 tuned to 500+ horsepower, but it would be strange to give the top A6 model two less cylinders than the S6. Still, this V10 makes 520 horsepower without the help of a turbo in the Gallardo, so it still seems strange to detune the engine and slap a turbo on it to increase the power back up to a level that can compete with the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. Either way, Lamborghini can't be pleased that a high-performance saloon and wagon from Audi will soon be pumping out more power than its entry-level exotic supercar.

[Source: World Car Fans]
Spy Shots: Audi RS6 with turbo V10 originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 16 Oct 2006 13:29:00 EST. Don't forget the $700 destination charge that's not included in the price, as well as the $1,300 gas-guzzler tax for the S6 and $1,700 for the S8. Still, for now these two vehicles stand as the least expensive way to mash the throttle of the Lamborghini Gallardo's V10, which has been detuned to 435 hp in the S6 and 450 hp in the S8. With that kind of motivation, the S6 can charge to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds and the larger S8 can reach the same mark in a more impressive 4.9 seconds. Neither are quite as fast as the Gallardo, which can reach 60 mph in a hair under four seconds, but can the raging baby bull carry four people in comfort? We think not.

[Source: Audi]
Audi S6 and S8 priced for U.S. consumption originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 07 Sep 2006 09:28:00 EST.
