<br />
January is just a short few weeks away, and along with the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show/">Detroit Auto Show</a>, that means classic car auctions to us automotive types. The televised circus of Barrett-Jackson and the more reserved auction houses of Russo and Steele and RM will be hoping to empty the pockets of those automotive aficionados who still have money left to burn after more than a year of tough economic times.<br />
<br />
With most of the lists of cars being finalized for each auction, the highlight of the weekend will likely be a 1964 Shelby Cobra 427 that will be offered to the highest bidder at RM's sale at the Biltmore Resort &amp; Spa in Phoenix, Arizona. While just about any Cobra merits attention, this particular one is the actual prototype for the legendary 427 Cobras. Nicknamed the "Flip-Top" for its clam shell design, the car actually competed at tracks like Riverside, Sebring, and Nassau, and has an extensive vintage racing history.<br />
<br />
RM doesn't provide an estimate, but we wouldn't be surprised to see the final bid easily reach seven figures. You can read a short description of the car after the jump or browse the high-res gallery below provided by RM.<br />

<br /> With just 75 built between 1959 and 1963, the Aston Martin DB4 GT is a rare breed. Of those, a mere six are the coveted lightweight models that cut weight by using aluminum components (instead of steel) and delete items like the radio, speakers, and heater. It's not very often that one comes up for sale, but this January, RM Auctions will be offering a pristine example at their sale in Scottsdale. <br /> <br /> The car going up for auction is chassis #0175/L, the last DB4 GT Lightweight built. It underwent a total restoration in the mid-Nineties where it received upgrades like Dunlop racing tires, Dayton wire wheels, and a four-point roll bar. The car wasn't competitively raced in the Sixties, but several owners have competed with the car in various vintage races at tracks like Lime Rock Park and Laguna Seca. <br /> <br /> Sound like your kind of car? RM estimates you'll need anywhere from $950,000-$1,000,000 to take this ruby beauty home. If you don't have that kind of cash, then you'll have to settle for the press release after the jump and the high-res gallery below.<br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1963-aston-martin-db4-gt-lightweight/low/">1963 Aston Martin DB4 GT Lightweight</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1963-aston-martin-db4-gt-lightweight/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/11/rmdb4gtlw_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1963-aston-martin-db4-gt-lightweight/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/11/rmdb4gtlw_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1963-aston-martin-db4-gt-lightweight/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/11/rmdb4gtlw_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1963-aston-martin-db4-gt-lightweight/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/11/rmdb4gtlw_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1963-aston-martin-db4-gt-lightweight/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/11/rmdb4gtlw_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> [Source: RM Auctions]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/20/rare-aston-martin-db4-gt-lightweight-going-to-highest-bidder-at/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rare Aston Martin DB4 GT Lightweight going to highest bidder at RM's Arizona auction</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/20/rare-aston-martin-db4-gt-lightweight-going-to-highest-bidder-at/">Rare Aston Martin DB4 GT Lightweight going to highest bidder at RM's Arizona auction</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 19:24:00 EST. <br />
Supercars like the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/09/pics-aplenty-mercedes-benz-unleashes-floodgates-on-sls-amg/">SLS AMG</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/10/shnell-mercedes-benz-sl65-amg-black-series-previewed/">SL65 AMG Black Series</a> might be the flagships for the current Mercedes-Benz lineup, but back in the late 1990s it was all about the CLK GTR -- an all-out race car slightly disguised as a road car. The street version you see here was built to homologate the race car that competed in the FIA's GT1 class in 1997 and 1998 (wining the championship in 1997). Each came with a 6.9-liter V12 putting out 612 horsepower as well as features found on modern supercars like a sequential six-speed transmission with paddle shifters and carbon fiber brakes. Just 25 examples were built including five roadsters, making the CLK GTR one of the most exclusive supercars ever built.<br />
<br />
It's for this reason that the auction of two CLK GTR road cars immediately caught our attention. Both will be offered at RM Auction's Automobiles of London sale on October 28. One coupe and one roadster will go across the block, each completely brand new and unregistered with delivery miles only. Interestingly, both cars are right hand drive, custom built for the original owner. RM lists the estimated price for each CLK GTR at around 1/3 the original cost to build the cars, meaning some lucky collector might take home a supercar for a bargain. Follow the jump for more details about both cars, or check out the stunning high-resolution gallery below.<br />

<br />Have you ever wanted to own your very own life-sized <span style="font-style: italic;">Hot Wheels</span> car? Here's your chance! As part of RM's Icons of Speed and Style auction at the Petersen Automotive Museum on September 26, a 1965 Dodge Deora Concept will cross the block and go home with the highest bidder. Built by legendary hot rodders Mike and Larry Alexander, the one-off pickup truck won the Ridler Award at the 1967 Detroit Autorama and was immortalized a year later as one of the original 16 Hot Wheels model cars. <br /><br />The unique design, based on a Dodge A100, includes no side doors but instead a forward-opening glass hatch that is essentially the back of a 1960 Ford station wagon turned 180 degrees. RM estimates that the Deora, which was restored to its original show specs just over ten years ago, should command between $350,000 - $550,000 when it goes up for auction. <br /> After selling off the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/14/monterey-2009-nick-alexander-woodie-collection-nets-7-mil/">Nick Alexander Woodie collection on Thursday</a>, RM continued with their Sports &amp; Classics of Monterey auction this past weekend. The sale was highlighted by a 1952 Jaguar C-Type that was originally owned and raced by the late Phil Hill. The legendary driver's son, Derek Hill, drove the car up on stage where bidding immediately passed $1,000,000 on its way to a $2,530,000 final selling price. <br /> <br /> Despite the downward trend of the collector car market, RM managed to sell 85% of the 239 cars it offered last weekend. In addition to the C-Type, several other notable cars found new homes, including a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/2009-rm-sports-and-classics-of-monterey-auction/#32">1955 Aston Martin DB3S</a> that sold for $1,980,000 and a Duesenberg Model SJ Disappearing Top Convertible Coupe with a final sale price of $1,430,000. Some of the no-sales included a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/2009-rm-sports-and-classics-of-monterey-auction/#14">2006 Bugatti Veyron 16.4</a> with a top bid of $900,000, a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/2009-rm-sports-and-classics-of-monterey-auction/#16">1938 Talbot Lago T120</a> that went unsold at $950,000, and a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/2009-rm-sports-and-classics-of-monterey-auction/#11">1953 Ferrari 166MM Spider Scaglietti</a> that didn't meet its reserve despite being bid to $1,100,000. You can read more about the auction in RM's press release after the jump.<br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-sports-and-classics-of-monterey-auction/low/">2009 RM Sports &amp; Classics of Monterey Auction</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-sports-and-classics-of-monterey-auction/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/ctyperm_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-sports-and-classics-of-monterey-auction/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/ctyperm_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-sports-and-classics-of-monterey-auction/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/ctyperm_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-sports-and-classics-of-monterey-auction/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/ctyperm_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-sports-and-classics-of-monterey-auction/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/ctyperm_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> <em><strong><small>Photos copyright (C)2009 <a href="http://www.drewphillipsphotography.com/">Drew Phillips</a> / Weblogs, Inc.</small></strong></em><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/19/monterey-2009-rm-auctions-sells-1952-jaguar-c-type-for-record/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Monterey 2009: RM Auctions sells 1952 Jaguar C-Type for record $2,530,000</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/19/monterey-2009-rm-auctions-sells-1952-jaguar-c-type-for-record/">Monterey 2009: RM Auctions sells 1952 Jaguar C-Type for record $2,530,000</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 19 Aug 2009 18:41:00 EST. <br />Pebble Beach may still be in full swing, but Canadian auction house RM is already gearing up for its next big event. Come this October, RM is setting up shop in London with a serious docket of classic automobiles on offer, the extent of which they're just revealing now.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/1928-rolls-royce-phantom-i-jarvis-torpedo-1/"><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" align="right" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/rm-phantom_250.jpg" alt="" /></a>One of the most prominent vehicles to cross the auction block at the upcoming event will be the 1928 Rolls-Royce Phantom I (pictured at right). Nicknamed the "Jarvis Torpedo", chassis 17EX is one of three made, and was owned by the Maharaja Hari Sigh Bahadur, ruler of Jammu and Kashmir in India, where it remained through the Seventies before returning to Europe for an extensive restoration. Since then it's appeared at various prestigious shows, including Villa d'Este in 1996 where it was named the most beautiful Rolls-Royce at the show, and Pebble Beach in 2004 to celebrate the company's centenary. <br /><br />Racing fans will undoubtedly be more enthralled, however, by the 1950 Aston Martin DB2 (above) that'll be up for grabs at the RM London auction. Raced extensively at Le Mans and the Mille Miglia, this factory works racer also served as personal transport for Aston chairman David Brown (for whom Astons still carry the initials DB). Along with a 1914 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Boattail Skiff, a 1962 Chaparral 1, the only right-hand-drive Mercedes CLK GTR Roadster ever built, a '67 Ferrari 330 GTC Zagato and more, these are just some of the most intriguing motorcars scheduled to cross the auction block late this coming October, which you can read about in the press release after the jump.<br /><strong><em><br />UPDATED: New images added to both galleries below</em></strong><br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1950-aston-martin-db2-1/low/">1950 Aston Martin DB2</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1950-aston-martin-db2-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/lf09_r118_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1950-aston-martin-db2-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/rm-db2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1928-rolls-royce-phantom-i-jarvis-torpedo-1/low/">1928 Rolls-Royce Phantom I 'Jarvis Torpedo'</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1928-rolls-royce-phantom-i-jarvis-torpedo-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/rm-phantom_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Image: Simon Clay/RM Auctions" title="Image: Simon Clay/RM Auctions" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1928-rolls-royce-phantom-i-jarvis-torpedo-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/lf09_r111_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1928-rolls-royce-phantom-i-jarvis-torpedo-1/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/08/lf09_r111_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br />[Source: RM Auctions]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/rm-gears-up-for-automobiles-of-london-auction-with-rare-rolls-ro/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RM gears up for Automobiles of London auction with rare Rolls-Royce and Aston Martin classics</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/rm-gears-up-for-automobiles-of-london-auction-with-rare-rolls-ro/">RM gears up for Automobiles of London auction with rare Rolls-Royce and Aston Martin classics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 08:28:00 EST. Looks like the economy might be doing okay after all. The massive <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/12/woodie-collection-to-kick-off-monterey-auctions-on-thursday/">Nick Alexander Woodie Collection</a> brought a combined $7 million to kick off the week's auctions in <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/monterey2009">Monterey</a>. One of the most extensive collections of Ford and Mercury Woodies in the world, Alexander's collection was auctioned off by RM Auctions on Thursday night in Monterey. Top seller was a gorgeous <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/nick-alexander-woodie-collection/#25">1946 Mercury Sportsman Convertible</a> (above) that went across the block and sold at $368,500.<br />
<br />
Other highlights included a super rare <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/nick-alexander-woodie-collection/#32">1948 Ford Super Deluxe Sportsman Convertible</a> that went for "just" $275,000, and an awesome, all-wheel-drive <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/nick-alexander-woodie-collection/#24">1946 Ford Super Deluxe Station Wagon</a> that brought $247,500. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will be going to support the Midland School in Santa Barbara, California. Those lucky enough to have the means to collect cars generally seem to pick a theme to their automotive obsession. For Nick Alexander, an owner of a BMW and Mini dealership in Southern California, it's woodies. His impressive collection consists of 52 Ford and Mercury woodies from the early 1930s through the mid 1950s, all of which are either restored to perfection or painstakingly preserved in original condition. <br />
<br />
Mr. Alexander, however, has decided that it's time to let the collection go and he's enlisted the help of RM Auctions to find buyers for the cars. All of the woodies will be sold at no reserve on August 13 at a special event in Monterey before RM's main auction on the 14th and 15th. A portions of the proceeds will also be donated to the Midland School in Santa Ynez Valley, CA. Hit the jump for more details on the auction, and browse through most of the woodies in the high-res gallery below. <br />

<br />The upcoming auctions at Pebble Beach are shaping up to be the stuff of legends. Which should come as no big surprise as legends are exactly what will be up for grabs. In addition to the highly anticipated launch of the new "<a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/08/hot-shot-another-official-pic-of-the-new-grand-bentley/">Grand Bentley</a>" amidst the field of lust-worthy machinery on display, auctioneers will be putting such notable classics on the block as <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/04/ettores-bugatti-founders-own-type-57c-up-for-auction-at-pebbl/">Ettore Buggati's own Type 57C</a>, the one-of-a-kind <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/09/its-miller-time-one-of-a-kind-v16-racer-on-the-block-at-rm-mon/">Miller V16 racing car</a>, and this historic 1952 Jaguar C-Type.<br /><br />The first C-Type Jaguar to be imported into the United States, model XKC-007 was sent straight to the race track where it was driven by no less a talent than the legendary Phil Hill. The World-Champion-to-be took this particular C-Type to three victories at Elkhart Lake, Torrey Pines and Watkins Glen, the former scoring as the first victory for the iconic C-Type in its storied history. After being retired from active duty, XKC-007 passed through several collections before undergoing a full restoration in 1986, after which it won numerous awards on the vintage concours circuit - including a reunion date with Phil Hill to commemorate Jaguar's 50th anniversary in 2002. XKC-007 will be up for auction at RM's three-day Sports &amp; Classics of Monterey event from August 13-15. <br />The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 wasn't even a distant dream in 1931. In fact, its father, Porsche family scion Ferdinand Pi&euml;ch, wasn't even born yet. Bugatti was still racing and building cars under the watchful eye of its founder Ettore Bugatti. But on this side of the Atlantic, Bugatti's American counterpart Harry Miller was building some of the most influential racing machines in automotive history. Like the Bugatti Type 35 was to inter-war grand prix racing in Europe, Miller customer cars dominated Indy racing in America: in the mid-1920s, they accounted for over 80% of the Indy 500 field. Miller's cars won that famous race alone nine times, and his engine design - penned together with Fred Offenhauser - remained in use through the 1980s, it was so advanced. But what you see here is arguably the most advanced car Miller ever produced.<br /><br />Bearing a 303-cubic-inch, 300-horsepower, sixteen-cylinder engine, the 1931 Miller V16 racing car was and remains today a unique piece of machinery. It competed in several runnings of the Indianapolis 500, and stands as the only sixteen-cylinder car that Miller ever made. It was reclaimed by one Chuck Davis in 1978, who painstakingly tracked down the original engine, which had been separated along the way from its chassis, and reunited the two ahead of an extensive restoration project. It's since been on display at Goodwood, Pebble Beach and Amelia Island, to say nothing of the numerous Miller Club events, and is now set to roll across the auction block at RM Auctions' event at Monterey next month. It's expected to fetch somewhere between $600,000 and $1 million. Check it out in our high-res image gallery below.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1931-miller-v16-racing-car/low/">1931 Miller V16 racing car</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1931-miller-v16-racing-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/mo09_r207_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1931-miller-v16-racing-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/mo09_r207_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1931-miller-v16-racing-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/mo09_r207_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1931-miller-v16-racing-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/mo09_r207_09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1931-miller-v16-racing-car/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/07/mo09_r207_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: RM Auctions]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/09/its-miller-time-one-of-a-kind-v16-racer-on-the-block-at-rm-mon/">It's Miller Time: One-of-a-kind V16 racer on the block at RM Monterey</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 09 Jul 2009 12:59:00 EST. <br />Still grumbling over having missed the chance at buying a Ford GT when it was still in production? Well, if you've got the cash on hand, there are probably dozens of examples up for sale by owners who need the liquid assets more than they need the retro supercar. But few are as enticing at what Ford and RM Auctions have going on this August.<br /><br />At both the Meadow Brook and Monterey concours the month after next, RM will be auctioning off an early VIN example to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The sixth example produced, decked out in red with white stripes, will be on offer at Meadow Brook, with the seventh Ford GT, in white with blue stripes, up for grabs in Monterey. Each is expected to fetch between $150,000 and $200,000 for the medical research endowment, so if getting your hands on Motown's hottest piece of machinery in decades wasn't cause enough, altruism ought to do the trick. <br />RM Auctions, in conjunction with Sotheby's, held their third annual Ferrari Leggende e Passione auction this past weekend. The star of the event was a 1957 250 TR chassis #0714TR, one of only 22 "pontoon-fender" Testa Rossas built, and this one was successfully campaigned by privateer owners from 1958 to 1963. It has been fully restored and features its original race black and red livery. The car was expected to break the record price for a car sold at auction, set last year by RM at the same event by a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/19/1961-ferrari-california-spyder-sells-for-record-10-894-900/">1961 250 GT California Spyder</a>, and it didn't disappoint. 0714TR brought a final price of &euro;9,020,000, or about $12,169,784 at the current exchange rate. <br /><br />Is this 250 TR worth the price? Think of it this way. Prominent works of art regularly sell for tens of millions of dollars and have even surpassed $100 million several times. If you consider the 250 TR a piece of artwork, with Ferrari and Scaglietti as the artists, then $12 million is a bargain. Plus, you can't rev a Picasso to 8,000 rpm or take it vintage racing.<br /><br />More details on the auction and the car in the press release after the jump.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1957-ferrari-250-tr-chassis-0714tr/low/">1957 Ferrari 250 TR, chassis #0714TR</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1957-ferrari-250-tr-chassis-0714tr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/ff09_r103_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1957-ferrari-250-tr-chassis-0714tr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/ff09_r103_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1957-ferrari-250-tr-chassis-0714tr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/ff09_r103_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1957-ferrari-250-tr-chassis-0714tr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/ff09_r103_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1957-ferrari-250-tr-chassis-0714tr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/ff09_r103_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: RM Auctions]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/18/ferrari-250tr-sells-for-record-breaking-12-2-million-at-rm-auct/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ferrari 250TR sells for record breaking $12.2M at RM Auction</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/18/ferrari-250tr-sells-for-record-breaking-12-2-million-at-rm-auct/">Ferrari 250TR sells for record breaking $12.2M at RM Auction</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 18 May 2009 16:32:00 EST. <strong> <br /></strong>Think this year's F1 season has been exciting? Truth be told it's been a refreshing change-up from the domination of the giants. But if anything, that just makes us more nostalgic for the clash of the titans that characterized past seasons. And none were as fierce as the rivalry between Ayrton Senna at McLaren and Alain Prost at Ferrari.<br /><br />After a highly competitive 1989 season with both drivers at McLaren and Prost crowned champion, the Frenchman switched to Ferrari for 1990 to team up with Nigel Mansell. It was a dream team in Maranello, and the rivalry between Prost and Senna was intensified. By the penultimate round in Japan, all Senna needed was for Prost not to finish the race and the title would be his, even if Senna himself didn't finish either. Senna was on pole, Prost right next to him. The lights flashed green, both drivers sped into the first corner where Senna closed the door on Prost and the two collided. Their race was over, and the title was handed to Senna. It was a highly controversial way to decide the championship, both drivers insisting the other was at fault. And this is the car it happened in.<br /><br />In 1990, Prost drove Ferrari 641/2 chassis #121 to two third-place finishes, two second places and one victory. And it was in the car he was driving when Senna knocked him out of the running. Since that fateful season, it has resided in several prominent collections in the U.S. and Japan, before undergoing a &euro;110,000 restoration at the Ferrari factory, where the car will be up for sale next month as part of the <em>Leggenda e Passione </em>auction event that will also feature the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/21/rm-auctioning-rare-ferrari-330-p4-at-leggenda-e-passione-event/">'67 330 P4</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/06/rare-ferrari-250-tr-expected-to-break-records-at-rms-maranello/">'57 250 Testa Rossa</a> we reported on earlier. Chassis 121 is expected to fetch &euro;300.000-&euro;400.000. <em>Follow the link for more information, and check out the images in the gallery below.<br /></em><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1990-ferrari-641-2-f1-chassis-121/low/">1990 Ferrari 641/2 F1 Chassis #121</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1990-ferrari-641-2-f1-chassis-121/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/ff09_r101_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1990-ferrari-641-2-f1-chassis-121/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/ff09_r101_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1990-ferrari-641-2-f1-chassis-121/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/ff09_r101_10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1990-ferrari-641-2-f1-chassis-121/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/ff09_r101_07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1990-ferrari-641-2-f1-chassis-121/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/04/ff09_r101_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.rmauctions.com/FeatureCars.cfm?SaleCode=FF09&amp;CarID=r101">RM Auctions</a> | Images: Tom Wood/RM Auctions]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/28/alain-prosts-fated-ferrari-641-2-f1-car-under-the-hammer-at-mar/">Alain Prost's fated Ferrari 641/2 F1 car under the hammer at Maranello auction</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 19:01:00 EST. <div style="text-align: center;"><small style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">1967 Ferrari 330 P4 - Click above for a high-res image gallery</small><br /></div>
<br />A few years ago, RM Auctions arranged a private sale at the Ferrari factory to help the Maranello firm clear out some of their various race cars, prototypes and other motoring effluvia that had begun to clutter up the cavallino campus. The sale was so successful (and fun) that the auction house decided to do it again. And again. For this year's <span style="font-style: italic;">Leggenda e Passione</span> event, they just picked up a vehicle that might have several of us calling Alitalia to check airfares. In cooperation with Sotheby's, the company will be auctioning off an ULTRA-RARE AND HUGELY VALUABLE LE MANS PODIUM-FINISH FERRARI 330 P4! The caps are theirs, not ours, but the emotion behind it is shared. These things don't come up for sale very often and when they do, it usually takes quite a few digits to secure them.<br /><br />The particular P4 in question is chassis number 0858, a 1967 Ferrari 330 P4 that happens to be one of only three original P4s built. There were others that were converted from P3s, but this is one of the factory P4s. This very car won at Monza and claimed third at Le Mans, where it was piloted by Lorenzo Bandini and Willy Mairesse. Jackie Stewart and Chris Amon drove it later at Brands Hatch, where they clinched the manufacturers championship for Ferrari behind the wheel of this beast. It will be the star at the May 17 auction, along with a gorgeous <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/06/rare-ferrari-250-tr-expected-to-break-records-at-rms-maranello/">Testa Rossa</a> and a number of other historic Ferraris and Maseratis. <div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">This year's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/new-york-auto-show/"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">New York</span> Auto Show</a> promises a few surprises</span><br /></div>
<br /></small>April might be best known for its rain and resultant flora, but we hope sunshine prevails. After all, April marks the beginning of the IndyCar season with an undercard of ALMS in St. Petersburg, as well as a follow-up race for each series in the shadow of the Queen Mary from Long Beach, CA. NASCAR powers through Texas, Arizona and Alabama, Grand-Am makes stops at VIR and Thunderbolt, and Formula 1 visits Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and Bahrain. We also get the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/New-York-Auto-Show/">New York Auto Show</a> as well as other motor shows in Vancouver, California's Ontario, Albany, the Inland Empire, Denver and elsewhere.<br /><br />There will be auctions in Palm Beach, Toronto, and Carlisle, vintage drags in Fontana, a GoodGuys stop in Del Mar, the Copperstate 1000, Top Marques Monaco, and the Street Rod Nationals up in Bakersfield, as well. If none of those events appeals to you, check the Google Calendar <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/30/event-alert-april-calendar-of-automotive-events/">after the jump</a> for even more listings, all with detailed info and links. We've tried to list the highlights as well as a few smaller events that we hope will be of interest to you. Feel free to use the comments section to add or modify listings.<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/31/event-alert-april-calendar-of-automotive-events/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Event Alert: April Calendar of Automotive Events</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/31/event-alert-april-calendar-of-automotive-events/">Event Alert: April Calendar of Automotive Events</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 31 Mar 2009 18:19:00 EST. <br />With its stunning pontoon-fendered bodywork sculpted by Scaglietti, the Ferrari 250 TR is not only one of the most beautiful cars ever built, it was one of the most competitive as well. Ferrari captured ten victories in nineteen races from 1958 to 1961, including a class win at Le Mans with Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien. <br /><br />It's rare to see one offered for sale, and it is a guarantee that a massive sum of money will exchange hands when one comes on the market. Those high-end car collectors who remain unaffected by economic woes will have the chance to part with such funds this coming May when a 1957 Ferrari 250 TR, chassis #0714TR, crosses the block at RM Auctions' <span style="FONT-STYLE: italic">Ferrari Leggenda E Passione</span> sale in Maranello. This particular example was campaigned extensively from 1958 to 1963 and is painted in its period-correct black paint with a red nose. RM expects the 250 TR to set a new world record for a car sold at auction, potentially exceeding the <strike>rumored $21.7 million it took to buy a 250 GTO</strike> $10.89 million dollar sale of a 1961 Ferrari California Spyder last year. More details on the sale in the press release from RM after the break.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1957-ferrari-250-tr-chassis-0714tr/low/">1957 Ferrari 250 TR, chassis #0714TR</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1957-ferrari-250-tr-chassis-0714tr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/ff09_r103_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1957-ferrari-250-tr-chassis-0714tr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/ff09_r103_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1957-ferrari-250-tr-chassis-0714tr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/ff09_r103_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1957-ferrari-250-tr-chassis-0714tr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/ff09_r103_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/1957-ferrari-250-tr-chassis-0714tr/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/ff09_r103_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: RM Auctions]<p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/06/rare-ferrari-250-tr-expected-to-break-records-at-rms-maranello/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rare Ferrari 250 TR expected to break records at RM's Maranello auction</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/06/rare-ferrari-250-tr-expected-to-break-records-at-rms-maranello/">Rare Ferrari 250 TR expected to break records at RM's Maranello auction</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 06 Feb 2009 16:39:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>Click above for high-res gallery of expensive cars that didn't sell at the RM auction</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />Across town from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/barrett-jackson">Barrett-Jackson</a> at the Bitmore Resort, RM Auctions held its "Automobiles of Arizona" auction highlighted by several multi-million dollar cars including a one-of-five <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-auctions-automobiles-of-arizona/1298046/">1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport</a> and a past Pebble Beach winner <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-auctions-automobiles-of-arizona/1298039/">1937 Bugatti 57SC Atalante Coupe</a> (much like the one that was recently <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/02/barn-find-of-the-decade-1937-bugatti-type-57s-atalante/">found in a barn</a>). Unfortunately, neither car saw a bid that met the reserve price, perhaps an indication that current economic conditions are finally catching up with the high-end collector car market. The Grand Sport went unsold with a top bid of $5 million, and the Bugatti failed to meet its reserve with a high bid of $4.4 million. A <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-auctions-automobiles-of-arizona/1298054/">1958 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France</a> also went unsold with a top bid of $1.8 million. One notable car that did find a new owner was the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-auctions-automobiles-of-arizona/1298063/">1954 Dodge Firearrow III Concept</a> with the hammer falling at $800,000 before auction fees. There were plenty of other beautiful cars that did sell, and you can check out the full list at <a href="http://www.rmauctions.com/CarList.cfm?SaleCode=AZ09">RM's web site</a>. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-auctions-automobiles-of-arizona/low/">2009 RM Auctions Automobiles of Arizona</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-auctions-automobiles-of-arizona/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/rmarizona09_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-auctions-automobiles-of-arizona/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/rmarizona09_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-auctions-automobiles-of-arizona/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/rmarizona09_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-auctions-automobiles-of-arizona/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/rmarizona09_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2009-rm-auctions-automobiles-of-arizona/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/rmarizona09_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><em><strong><small>Photos copyright (C)2009 </small></strong><small><a href="http://www.drewphillipsphotography.com/"><strong><small>Drew Phillips</small></strong></a><strong> / Weblogs, Inc.<br />Corvette Grand Sport photos courtesy Dan Vaughan, <a href="http://www.conceptcarz.com/">ConceptCarz.com</a></strong></small></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/16/big-dollar-cars-dont-meet-reserves-at-rms-arizona-auction/">Big dollar cars don't meet reserves at RM's Arizona auction</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 16 Jan 2009 23:04:00 EST. <div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">This year's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show/">Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS)</a> should be even bigger than last year despite dropouts</span><br /></div>
</small> <br />Thanks to your suggestions, last month we added a Google Calendar <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/20/event-alert-january-calendar-of-automotive-events/">after the jump</a> so you can bookmark it and constantly receive updates as we add them. We appreciate all of your input and hope you find our calendar a useful tool. We also appreciate your comments listing events we might have overlooked or that are just near-and-dear to your hearts.<br /><br />Highlights for January include the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/category/detroit-auto-show/">North American International Auto Show,</a> which we will be covering extensively from Detroit; the Arizona collectible car auctions featuring Barrett-Jackson, RM Auctions, Russo and Steele and others; the La Jolla Motorcar Classic at The Cove; the Cavallino Classic from The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida; and the kickoff of the 2009 motorsports season with the Rolex 24 at Daytona.<br /><br />As always, we want to give a shoutout to our two favorite sources; The <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/ref/automobiles/event_calendar.html">New York Times automotive calendar</a> for national and international stuff, and for local stuff here in Southern California, our buddy Dave Lindsay's <a href="http://www.socalcarculture.com/events.html">SoCalCarCulture</a> pages. Dave's photographic coverage of these local events is fantastic. <p>The annual auctions in Arizona are a little more than a month away, and RM has put together an impressive lineup of vehicles that will be crossing the block. The highlight will probably be an original <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/23/rare-1963-corvette-grand-sport-to-be-auctioned-in-january/">1963 Corvette Grand Sport</a>, but two 1950's show cars should grab some attention as well. The first is a Dodge Firearrow III Sport Concept that made its debut at the 1954 Detroit Auto Show (you might also remember the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/18/barrett-jackson-the-dodge-firearrow-concept-cars/">Firearrow II and IV</a> convertibles that sold at Barrett-Jackson in 2007). The concept was Chrysler's answer to the soon-to-be Ford Thunderbird and Chevrolet Corvette and was fully functional down to the roll up windows. So functional, in fact, that it broke a closed-course record of 143.44 mph at Chrysler's proving grounds that that year. The car was restored to show condition in the early 90's, and after being exhibited at numerous museums around the country, it is being offered for sale for the first time in more than 20 years with bids expected to exceed the one million dollar mark. </p>
<p>The second vehicle, known as the Saturn 'Bob Hope Special', is a one-off custom built in 1950 at a reported cost of $12,000. The car is built on a modified Mercury chassis and features handmade bodywork and a dashboard reminiscent of an airplane cockpit with 32 individual controls. Legendary entertainer Bob Hope fell in love with the car, and even planned to include it in one of his movies. While the movie didn't pan out, Hope continued to drive the car around Hollywood giving the car its name. More details on both cars in the press release after the jump, and beautiful high-res photos of both cars courtesy of RM Auctions can be found in the galleries below.</p>
