Red Bull Racing employs a paddock 'spy' who keeps tabs on Formula One grand prix goings-on and gossip, in addition to having a front-row, behind-the-scenes seat in one of the sport's top teams. The energy drink firm has just given him a larger platform for his intel with the Red Bull Racing Spy app, available now for free on Apple iTunes.

It appears to cover all the angles, with race infographics, background and historical facts, galleries, race info and season calendar as well as real-time updates like track positions during the race. On top of which you can send the spy your own questions and "challenges." Who knows, the spy might be able to answer some of our own questions about the Alpine A110-50C/ZAR.

Used to be if Renault wanted to celebrate a Formula One team with special edition, it would celebrate its own. But having sold the bulk of its own team to Lotus and Genii Capital in favor of supplying engines to a greater variety of independent teams, its latest commemorative hot hatches honor the (current) king of them all: Red Bull Racing.

Just a couple of months ago, Renaultsport rolled out the special RBR edition Clio, and is now following up with a similar treatment applied to the smaller Twingo (with a special edition Megane to follow). Celebrating the team's 2011 constructors' title and the Renault-powered car that got them there, the Twingo RS Red Bull Racing RB7 features a black and yellow livery (though we don't know what the color scheme has to do with the team that races in dark blue with red), the otherwise optional Cup suspension, blacked-out 17-inch alloys and the RS Monitor onboard telemetry system.

Order books are opening in June across nine markets in Europe and in Japan. But even if you're not in one of them, you can still scroll on down for the full press release and scope out the images in the high-resolution image gallery above.
Continue reading Renault fetes Red Bull Racing with special edition Twingo

Renault fetes Red Bull Racing with special edition Twingo originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 25 May 2012 08:31:00 EST.
Certain videos, when the protagonists speak a foreign language, don't need subtitles: Mexican telenovelas, dolphins in love and auto racing are but three. Although the narration is in Spanish and there isn't any racing in this video of former WRC Champion Carlos Sainz and current DTM driver Miguel Molina lapping the Autódromo Terramar, the action needs no translation.

Terramar, in Spain, is the second oldest racing track in Europe after England's Brooklands, built in 1922 to host Grand Prix cars. Its owner's vision stretched further this his financial backing, so the two-kilometer oval track with 60-degree bankings hosted only one sanctioned race in 1923. After that, it was used sporadically, holding its last event in 1950. It is now part of land used for a chicken farm.

That didn't stop Sainz and Molina from seeing how fast they could lap the 80-year-old circuit in a Red Bull Racing Audi R8 LMS. The video is a bit long, but it's well-shot and definitely worth watching for the high banking and bumpy airborn Audi shots alone. Check out the action by scrolling down to watch the video.
Continue reading Watch Carlos Sainz flog this Audi R8 LMS around an 80-year-old GP track

Watch Carlos Sainz flog this Audi R8 LMS around an 80-year-old GP track originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 14 May 2012 12:31:00 EST.
We've gotten used to seeing Sebastian Vettel kicks some ass on the race track. After all, he is the reigning Formula One world champion twice over. But in a kung-fu movie? We've got to be kidding, right?

Only we're not. As you may recall, Infiniti - the luxury automaker that sponsors both Vettel himself and his Red Bull Racing team - announced about a month ago that the German driver would be starring alongside action star Celina Jade in a short film. Called Drive of the Dragon, it's the first in a multi-part promotional campaign being undertaken by the Japanese automaker. The flick has made its debut, and you can check it out by scrolling down below. But be warned: cheesiness will ensue.
Continue reading Infiniti premieres Sebastian Vettel's kung-fu film debut

Infiniti premieres Sebastian Vettel's kung-fu film debut originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 May 2012 19:00:00 EST.
There's no doubting the driving talents of one Sebastian Vettel. He won his first grand prix when he was still with backmarker team Scuderia Toro Rosso, and went on to win back-to-back World Championship titles for Red Bull Racing. Heck, he's even taken the Nations Cup at the Race of Champions with Michael Schumacher for the last five years running now. You might even call his skills the stuff of super heroes. But if it came down a bar fight, the grinning whiz kid wouldn't exactly inspire fear. (Not like Adrian Sutil would, anyway.) But his latest collaboration might stand to change that.

While in China for this coming weekend's grand prix, the reigning World Champion met up with action star Celina Jade for a little kung fu lesson. They even shot a short film called Kung Fu Vettel: Drive of the Dragon that's set to be released next month. And then they headed to the track so Vettel could return the favor.

The crossover is the first in a series of promotional events under the "Inspired Performers" banner, orchestrated by sponsor Infiniti. What any of this has to do with luxury automobiles is beyond us, but it made for a decent photo and video op, as you can see from the gallery above and the video teaser after the jump.
Continue reading Sebastian Vettel trades F1 for Kung Fu in martial arts film debut with Celina Jade

Sebastian Vettel trades F1 for Kung Fu in martial arts film debut with Celina Jade originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 13 Apr 2012 15:14:00 EST.
As a Formula One entity, Renault has gone from engine supplier to full manufacturer (having acquired the Benetton team back in 2000) and back to engine supplier (having all but completely divested the team now under the Lotus banner). The French automaker's competition engine works also powers Caterham and Williams this season, but most importantly, the Red Bull Racing team that is returning once again as World Champions. So whereas previous Renaultsport special edition hot hatches celebrated the company's own achievements, the latest celebrates Red Bull's.

Named the Red Bull RB7 edition after last year's car, the special Clio RS packs a 203-horsepower four mounted to the Cup chassis that would otherwise be an option. The body is painted matte black with yellow highlights, a tone-on-tone checkerboard roof, the requisite special badging and 18-inch wheels done up in a black finish and shod with the same Bridgestone rubber that kept the Mégane Trophy glued to the Nürburgring for its lap record.

Inside it's got yellow Recaro buckets and the RS Monitor performance telematics system. The special edition will only be available, however, in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria and Spain. Details to be found in the press release after the jump with high-res images in the gallery above.
Continue reading Renault celebrates Red Bull partnership with special edition Clio RS

Renault celebrates Red Bull partnership with special edition Clio RS originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 14 Mar 2012 14:30:00 EST.
It might have seemed like a joke when an energy drink company bought the first of two F1 teams in 2004, but eight years and two world titles later, the only ones laughing are those inside the team. For 2012, Red Bull Racing returns as the force to be reckoned with as it aims to make it three in a row, and this is the car in which it aims to get there.

Red Bull hasn't released much in the way of details on how the RB8 differs from the hugely successful RB7 it replaces, but the most obvious change is the stepped nose design that is unfortunately becoming the defining trait of the 2012 grid. The engine is once again furnished by Renault, with KERS and DRS in place to help Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber get to the front of the field... and stay there. Sebastien Buemi joins the team this season as its official test driver, having been jettisoned from Scuderia Toro Rosso.

Following up on the two-wheeled slow-motion theme in 2012, Red Bull is highlighting two-time motocross champion James Stewart and his factory Yamaha race bike. We've already seen a couple of Honda-mounted MotoGP riders at 1,000 frames per second, so it only seems appropriate to see what super slow motion looks like on the dirt.

Bubba makes it look easy when viewed frame-by-frame at these speeds, but, as anyone who's ever thrown a leg over a motocross bike's saddle some 40-inches above the ground will tell you, there's nothing easy about it. Whether skimming the top of the whoops, railing through a tight turn or flying through the air like an acrobat on wheels, we're simply in awe of Stewart's abilities aboard his dark blue steed.

We highly suggest you click past the break to watch the video, it's well worth your time.
Continue reading James Stewart and Red Bull hit the Motocross track in slow-mo

James Stewart and Red Bull hit the Motocross track in slow-mo originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Jan 2012 19:29:00 EST.
Red Bull has a rather unique way of ringing in the new year. Back in 2007, motorcycle freestyle daredevil Robbie Maddison jumped 322 feet over a football field in Las Vegas, setting a world record for the longest motorcycle jump. A year later, the Australian stuntman jumped 96 feet into the air, landing safely atop the Arc De Triomphe at Paris Las Vegas... and then he let gravity take over as he jumped his motorcycle back down.

Four-wheeled machinery has taken part in the festivities as well. Rhys Millen nearly landed a backflip in his trophy truck in 2008. The perennially insane Travis Pastrana made history in 2009 when he flew his Subaru WRX STI rally car from one boat-mounted ramp to another on a barge, clearing about 250 feet of open water in the process. Sadly, there was no record-setting feat in 2010 after Levi LaVellee crashed his snowmobile in a practice run, though he did set a 361-foot record before it was all said and done.

Which leads us to 2011, which ended in spectacular fashion as Maddison and LaVellee performed a flawless tandem jump over the water in San Diego, California. Maddison recorded a distance of 378 feet on his motorcycle while LaVellee set a new snowmobile distance record by soaring 412 feet from takeoff to landing. See the feat go down from multiple video angles (including one from LaVellee's helmet cam) after the break.
Continue reading Record-setting motorcycle and snowmobile tandem jump rings in New Year

Record-setting motorcycle and snowmobile tandem jump rings in New Year originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 03 Jan 2012 14:45:00 EST.
The New York Times is reporting that the Formula One Teams Association is losing momentum. Both Ferrari and Red Bull have announced their departure from the organization that was supposed to be a forum for advancing the goals of the sport's teams, big and small. In a statement, Ferrari simply said that the FOTA had "run its course." The organization never quite managed to accomplish its goals, including installing a cap on spending to level the playing field and increase competition in this notoriously well-funded branch of motorsport. The 11 member teams of FOTA all agreed on the Resource Restriction Agreement in principal, but the movement seems to have stalled there.

Ferrari and Red Bull were two of the largest teams in FOTA, and their absence will likely be felt by the organization moving forward. Red Bull won both the 2011 and the 2010 Constructors' Championships, and Ferrari has a long and storied history with the sport.
Ferrari and Red Bull withdraw from FOTA originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 06 Dec 2011 18:29:00 EST.
Lots of automakers participate in F1 racing: Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Lotus, Renault... and not so long ago, BMW, Honda and Toyota were in on the action, too. But while these companies have made their own cars, engines and even fielded their own teams in the top motorsport discipline, Infiniti's participation has been a little more removed.

Nissan's luxury division, as you may well be aware, is one of the top sponsors of the current reigning championship team Red Bull. But without actually building or powering Sebastian Vettel's car, Infiniti has been on a constant search for ways to capitalize on its partnership. That could soon amount to a Red Bull-tweaked line of performance models, and has already lead to a Sebastian Vettel edition FX. But for those who can't stretch that far, Infiniti has announced - drum-roll, please - a vinyl wrap.

The celebratory livery is available at an as-yet undisclosed price to current FX owners, but for the "lucky" ten customers who buy an FX now in the UK and win a tour of the factory, it could be theirs for free. We'd be glad to take the tour, but we'll leave the wrap off our luxury crossovers, thank you very much.
Continue reading Infiniti and Red Bull wrap up the F1 season, FX in style

Infiniti and Red Bull wrap up the F1 season, FX in style originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 09 Nov 2011 18:39:00 EST.
If you're going to sign a new sponsorship deal with a racing team, you might want to do so before the team wins the championship, not after. But Infiniti seems to have a different idea. Nissan's luxury division signed on as a sponsor for the Red Bull Racing team after it won the championship last season, and now that it's secured both the drivers' and manufacturers' titles again, the two have announced an extension of their arrangement.

When the deal was first announced, speculation ran rampant that it would extend to Infiniti "supplying" engines to the team. You see, Red Bull's cars get their power from engines made by Renault, which is part of the same corporate alliance as Infiniti. And since most automakers that get involved in F1 either start or buy their own teams or supply engines to existing ones, logic dictated that the deal between Infiniti and Red Bull would see Renault's engines rebranded, thereby making the team's official name Red Bull-Infiniti.

The rebranding arrangement wouldn't be unprecedented. McLaren, for example, once ran Porsche engines rebranded as TAG. Sauber did the same with Petronas-branded Ferrari engines. Cosworth engines have at times been branded as Ford, Fondmetal or European, while Mercedes engines are actually made by Ilmor, which supplied F1 engines under its own name in the early 90s before Benz bought out their F1 operations.

That apparently won't be the case with Red Bull and Infiniti, however. At least not for another year to come. Instead, the deal between the two outfits will see Infiniti's logos grow in size and placement on next year's cars and other team gear, as Infiniti works to leverage the cooperation in new ways. Official announcement after the jump.
Continue reading Infiniti's renewed partnership with Red Bull stops short of rebranded engines

Infiniti's renewed partnership with Red Bull stops short of rebranded engines originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 18 Oct 2011 09:00:00 EST.
You'd think that a racing team that was about to seal up the Formula One World Championship would be focused entirely on the task at hand. But not Red Bull. That team's got resources to spare, and was relaxed knowing that its own Sebastian Vettel was just one point away from the title heading into the Japanese Grand Prix this past weekend. So while Vettel and the rest of the team were at Suzuka, the team's demo squad were in India for another feat.

Neel Jani, a Swiss driver of Indian ancestry, drove the 2005 RB1 that was converted for use by the demo team up Khardung La. The Tibetan mountain pass through the Himalayas is widely regarded (but often debated) as the highest-altitude drivable road in the world, so, suffice it to say, it made for different conditions than those to which F1 teams are accustomed.

The route took Jani and the RB1 up the hill more than 7,000 feet - from 11,000 above sea level to 18,830 - passing along the way the famous Thiksey Monastery and the Shanti Stupa shrine - both iconic sites to Buddhists around the world. See the results in our high-res image gallery.
Red Bull Racing drives world's highest road through the Himalayas originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 12 Oct 2011 14:29:00 EST. Polyphony Digital has something special planed if Sebastian Vettel manages to take the Formula One Driver's Championship for the second year in a row. Vettel made history by becoming the youngest driver to ever take the title last year, and if he pulls off a repeat performance, Polyphony says it will release the Red Bull X2010 in game to anyone who logs on to Gran Turismo 5. As anyone who's familiar with the franchise can tell you, the X2010 is ultimate prize in GT5, as vehicle is the award for completing every challenge in the game.

Currently, there are only five races left in the 2011 F1 season, and Vettel has an astounding 124-point lead in the Driver's Championship. He only needs to score one single point in any one of the remaining five races in order to win the title. That means pulling off a 10th-place-or-better finish. Looks like GT5 fans will be enjoying their own X2010 very soon.

In addition, Polyphony has announced a sweeping update for GT5 that includes interior views for all vehicles in the game, reduced load times, the ability to save mid-race and 11 new NASCAR vehicles from the current season. The game's price will also receive a big cut, dropping from $59.99 to $39.99... just as Forza 4 shows up.
Gran Turismo 5 to get first major update, Red Bull X2010 prototype originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 06 Oct 2011 13:31:00 EST.
Team Lotus of Formula One confirmed it will extend its engine deal with Renault through the end of 2013. The team, headed by entrepreneur Tony Fernandes, announced at the Singapore Grand Prix that it will employ a Red Bull-developed KERS system starting in 2012. Fernandes said the Team Lotus-Renault-Red Bull deal will put the team on a more even playing field:

We have done the very best job we can this year but without that extra power we are always competing on a different level to the teams ahead, so to give our drivers that boost is a key element of helping us catch the cars ahead, and compete with them when we do so.

Renault Sport F1 head Jean-François Caubet said KERS - a system that transforms kinetic energy into useable power, providing Formula One racers with a six-second, 80-horsepower boost - is essential to competitive performance in F1.
Team Lotus extends Formula One engine deal with Renault, will use KERS in 2012 originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Sep 2011 08:00:00 EST.
Glancing down the F1 roster this year has lead to a little confusion for many. That's because there are two teams that lay claim to the Lotus name, and they're both powered by Renault. The French automaker and engine supplier is stuck in the middle of the naming-rights tug-of-war, but if you were hoping things might be clarified for next season, don't hold your breath. Because while the real Lotus continues its partnership with Renault over one team (the one in the black and gold in the middle of the pack), Renault has also renewed its partnership with the other Lotus (the one in the green and yellow near the back of the field).

The agreement between Team Lotus and Renault Sport F1 will see the two collaborating (read: the former buying engines from the latter) for another couple of seasons until the end of 2013, and leaves the door open for further collaboration when the new engine regulations take effect. But the new deal also brings Red Bull into the fold, the championship team providing Team Lotus with the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) for the first time since it began racing a couple of years ago.

The inclusion of Red Bull's KERS in the engine package not only gives Team Lotus a chance at advancing up the grid from its current backmarker position to challenge the teams that already have it farther upfield. But it also further cements Red Bull's position as Renault's premier team in place of the other Lotus team that was once the French company's factory outfit.
Continue reading Team Lotus renews deal with Renault, gets Red Bull KERS

Team Lotus renews deal with Renault, gets Red Bull KERS originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 26 Sep 2011 09:30:00 EST.
If you don't think David Coulthard has the coolest job on the planet, that's just because you haven't seen this video yet.

As you may recall, the Formula One driver and Red Bull recently headed down to Austin to display their excitement over the sport's return to American soil. Coulthard and his Red Bull racer got the chance to play with a few cowboys on Red McCombs' ranch before taking to public streets in the F1 car. That included a quick stop for doughnuts in front of the capitol building before heading off to the dirt bones of the new track for a little fun.

As far as we know, Coulthard is the first driver to have a crack at the track in any state or form, and we have to say that watching his carbon-fiber beast skip across the dry Texas dirt is enough to bring a smile to our eyes. From the looks of things, the Texas facility will provide a plenty challenging course for the world's best drivers. We can't wait to see it completed. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.
Continue reading Red Bull and David Coulthard off-road Austin's Circuit of the Americas, again

Red Bull and David Coulthard off-road Austin's Circuit of the Americas, again originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 21 Sep 2011 19:28:00 EST.
To say that Red Bull has found success in Formula One would be a gross understatement. The energy drink concern bought its way into the pinnacle of motorsports and, after several seasons of building up the team that started life as Stewart Grand Prix and then became Jaguar Racing, has already secured itself both championship titles and is well on its way to repeating the feat.

That's the kind of success that Infiniti - whose sister company Renault provides Red Bull's engines - is keen to tap into. And tap into it they have, prominently sponsoring the team, recruiting its top driver Sebastian Vettel as brand ambassador and unveiling a special edition FX crossover here in Frankfurt. And just beside it sat this mockup of the current RB7 grand prix car.

Though it surely doesn't pack all the mechanical bits of the car with which Vettel and his wingman Mark Webber are winning race after race, you wouldn't know it from looking at the machine up close. See for yourself in our high-resolution gallery of live images.
Infiniti shows us what winning looks like with Red Bull F1 mockup originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 16:58:00 EST.
Of all the automakers that have supplied engines to Formula One teams over the years, few have seen Renault's level of success. But while the French automaker scored world championships with its own team in 2005 and 2006, the bulk of its achievements have historically come as supplier to independent teams.

This season Renault is powering three teams, and will power Williams once again starting next season. But without a doubt its most successful partnership has been with Red Bull Racing. The team is the current reigning champion in both the drivers' and constructors' categories, and looks poised to repeat this year. Little surprise, then, that the two outfits have opted to renew their partnership for five more seasons.

The newly announced agreement will see Red Bull running the current V8 engines and KERS hybrid system for the next two seasons, during which it will collaborate directly with Renault Sport on the development of the new 1.6-liter turbo V6 units for use starting in 2014. With Red Bull and Renault stepping up to such "premium technical cooperation", we can't help but wonder if the French manufacturer is looking to further decrease its direct involvement with its own works team and elevate Red Bull - long rumored to switch its engines to Infiniti branding - to its principal collaborator. Official announcement after the jump.
Continue reading Red Bull and Renault renew partnership for five more years

Red Bull and Renault renew partnership for five more years originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 11 Sep 2011 15:04:00 EST.
The relationship between Mark Webber and the Red Bull Racing team he drives for has often been more of a rocky road than smooth tarmac. The two parties have butted heads more than a handful of times, but at the end of the day, they're a good match. And so the team has announced that it has signed the Australian driver for another season of F1 racing.

The announcement puts to rest all manner of rumors of Webber's replacement, including the potential return of Kimi Raikkonen, who's already sponsored by the same energy drink company in his rally pursuits.

From Webber's perspective, it can't be fun playing second fiddle to his junior wingman Sebastian Vettel, but the bottom line is that - having previously driven for Minardi, Jaguar and Williams - he never did as well as he's done these past few seasons at Red Bull, advancing from "also ran" status to fourth place in the 2009 world championship, third in last year's and the second place at which he currently stands this season. Official announcement in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Mark Webber signs on for another year with Red Bull Racing

Mark Webber signs on for another year with Red Bull Racing originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 15:35:00 EST.
