RM Auctions only just finished pulling in record numbers at its event in Monaco, but it's already gearing up for the next event set to take place during Pebble Beach weekend in Monterey, California.

Headlining the Canadian specialist auctioneer's catalog for the August event are the rare 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Berlinetta and the timelessly elegant 1938 Talbot-Lago Teardrop Coupe pictured together above.

Considered by some to be one of the world's most desirable Ferrari classic road car, this particular 410 Sport Berlinetta is the second of just four built and the only fixed-roof coupe. Chassis 0594 CM features bodywork by Scaglietti in ivory with blue leather. It will be making its first appearance both in North America and at auction, having only traded hands a few times between private European collectors until now.

The Talbot, meanwhile, is one of only five of its kind built (of four remaining) and the only such coupe built upon a four-seat chassis. The winner of several concours, this particular example of French art deco in motion is expected to fetch $2.5 to $3.2 million. Scroll down for the full press release and peruse the high-resolution images of the two cars together in Monaco for a sneak preview.
Continue reading Elegant classic Ferrari and Talbot-Lago to headline at Pebble Beach

Elegant classic Ferrari and Talbot-Lago to headline at Pebble Beach originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 17 May 2012 08:28:00 EST.
Few marques get auto collectors riled up quite like Ferrari, and of classic Ferraris, few are as highly sought-after as the legendary Testa Rossa. We're talking, of course, about the 50s-era roadster (as opposed to the 80s-era cheesegrater supercar), and the originals continue to fetch top dollar (or euro) whenever and wherever their fortunate owners are willing to part with them.

That when and where came this past weekend in Monte Carlo during the Historical Grand Prix of Monaco where RM Auctions sold some highly desirable classic metal. Topping the list was the rare 1957 Ferrari 625 TRC Spider you see here, one of only two built, which sold for a whopping €5,040,000 - equivalent to over $6.4 million at today's exchange rates. That's considerably more than the $4m four-cylinder 500 TRC that RM auctioned last year, but substantially less than the record $12m it garnered for a 250 TR in 2009.

Of course the Testa Rossa wasn't the only car sold at the event, which brought in an astonishing €33.5 million (~$43m) in sales on 87 percent of all lots sold. In fact it wasn't even the only Ferrari represented there, though it was the most expensive by a wide margin. A 1966 Ferrari 206 S Dino Spyder and a 1952 Ferrari 225 Sport Spyder 'Tuboscocca' (one of only 12 Vignale Spyders produced) each fetched €2.5 million ($3.2m), a rare factory Daytona Spyder brought in over €1 million ($1.3m), the car which Michael Schumacher drove to the 2000 Formula One World Championship and that Ferrari hydroplane each brought in over €800k (about a million greenbacks).

Other notable racing machinery sold at the auction included a Peugeot 908 LMP (which won several Le Mans Series races), a Lamborghini Gallardo LP600 GT3 (raced by Blancpain CEO Mark Hayek in the Super Trofeo series), a Ferrari FXX Evoluzione and a pair of Ducati Desmosedici MotoGP racing bikes. Follow the jump for all the juicy details and scope out the headline Testa Rossa in the high-res image gallery above.
Continue reading 1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa sells for $6.4M in Monaco

1957 Ferrari Testa Rossa sells for $6.4M in Monaco originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 15 May 2012 12:33:00 EST.
How much is a Pebble Beach 'Best in Show' car worth? We're about to find out. A 1938 Horch 853A Erdmann & Rossi Sport Cabriolet (that's quite a mouthful) is looking for a new home and is headed to auction at RM's Monterey sale in August. The car underwent an extensive restoration in 2001 and debuted at the 2004 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance where it took home first prize. Since then, the Horch has gone on to win many other accolades including the Best in Show at the New York City Concours (2005), the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance (2006), the Glenmoor Gathering (2008), and the Ault Park Concours (2009).

So what makes this particular car so special? Horch, one of the original four German automakers of the Auto Union that lives on today as Audi, produced some of the most luxurious vehicles in the early part of the century. The 853A Cabriolet, one of the company's last efforts, is widely considered one of the most beautiful cars of its era and came with many modern features including vacuum-boosted hydraulic brakes, overdrive in all four gears, and a unique hydraulic jacking system. This particular example features unique coachwork by Erdmann & Rossi and is one of just three known to currently exist.

You can read more about the 1938 Horch 853A Erdmann & Rossi Sport Cabriolet and the auction in RM's press release after the break, and you can see our photos of the car at the 2004 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in the gallery above.
Continue reading Pebble Beach winner going up for auction in August

Pebble Beach winner going up for auction in August originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 11 May 2012 18:20:00 EST.
By the early 1950s, Alfa Romeo had grown tired of dominating (and spending huge sums of money on) grand prix racing, and shut down its program. Along with it, a program to develop a small-displacement two-liter V8 was aborted. But Alfa couldn't keep away from racing altogether for very long, and by the early 60s the factory noticed that its customers were competing in endurance sportscar races and set about fielding its own works effort.

Development of the high-revving 2.0-liter V8 picked up again, finding its way into a variety of prototypes and GTs, but this was arguably the most alluring. Shortly after its debut in 1967, the T33/2 scored an impressive 1-2-3 class finish (and 5-6-7 overall) in the 24 Hours of Daytona, giving the car its nickname. And while Alfa and its racing partner Autodelta kept notoriously sketchy historical records on their racing cars, chassis 75033.029 is believed to be one of the most successful.

The extensive history of the vehicle you see here - regarded as one of the most desirable of racing Alfas of an era that stretches from the 1960s through the 70s - includes victory at the 500 km of Imola in 1968, punctuating a series of races campaigned by the works Alfa/Autodelta team and various privateers that followed. You can read more about the Tipo 33/2 Daytona in the text after the jump ahead of its consignment to the RM Auctions event in Monaco next month, or you could let the pictures in the high-res image gallery speak for themselves.
Continue reading 1968 Alfa Romeo T33/2 Daytona racing to the auction block in Monaco

1968 Alfa Romeo T33/2 Daytona racing to the auction block in Monaco originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 10 Apr 2012 18:00:00 EST. When collectors like Bob and Paul Milhous sell off their entire collection, you know it's going to be a momentous occasion. And that's just what it was when RM Auctions dropped the hammer on a staggering array of classic automobiles, mechanical musical instruments and various other collectibles in Boca Raton over the weekend.

We brought you details of the collection and its imminent sale a couple of weeks ago, but now the results are in, and the numbers are staggering. Every last item in the collection was successfully sold, bringing in a whopping $38.3 million all told. The top seller in the auction and collection was the headline 1912 Oldsmobile Limited Five-Passenger Touring - the last remaining example of its kind and fitted with unique coachwork - which sold for $3.3 million. Just a touch more than that used Alero you saw sitting at the local lot, and a considerable premium over the $1.5 million it was projected to fetch, setting a world record in the process for the most expensive Oldsmobile ever sold.

A 1939 Lagonda V-12 Rapide also more than doubled its pre-sale estimate at $990k (itself setting a record for the most expensive roadgoing Lagonda). Other big ticket items included a custom-made 46-foot carousel that sold for $1.2 million, similar to the prices paid for each of a pair of vintage organs. Everything's coming up Milhous, and you can check it out in further detail in the press release after the jump.
Continue reading Milhous Collection hammers at $38.3M in Boca - including record-breaking $3.3M Oldsmobile

Milhous Collection hammers at $38.3M in Boca - including record-breaking $3.3M Oldsmobile originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 01 Mar 2012 10:59:00 EST.
There are any of a number of places you'd expect to find a Ferrari: at the race track, on the auction block, in the showroom, parked in front of the swankiest restaurants in town... To see one in the water usually spells trouble, but history is not without its exceptions.

Back in the 1980s, Italian boatbuilder Riva collaborated with Ferrari for a rather Testarossa-inspired speedboat, but long before that, the House that Enzo Built lent its expertise and 4.5-liter V12 engine to Achille Castoldi to build the hydroplane power boat you see here.

Castoldi was bent on setting a new speed record on the water, and with this spectacular watercraft - dubbed Arno XI - he did just that. The Ferrari-powered vessel hit an astonishing 150.19 miles per hour at Lake Iseo in northern Italy on October 15, 1953. That's mighty impressive in its own right, but what's even more astounding is that the record stands in the 800kg category to this day.

To get there, Ferrari and Castoldi took the same Type 375 4.5-liter V12 engine that powered José Florian Gonzalez to his first grand prix victory at Silverstone, marinized it and fitted two superchargers to crank out more than 600 horsepower.

Now Arno XI is heading to the auction block in Monaco, where RM Auctions expects it will fetch around $1.5 million. Whether you've got that kind of cash or not - and whether or not Monte Carlo is in your travel plans for May - you can pull up alongside it in the gallery of high-resolution studio and archival images above.
1950s Ferrari-powered world record hydroplane heading to auction in Monaco originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 21 Feb 2012 14:30:00 EST.
Cars get their names from a wide variety of sources: animals, places, the founders of the company that makes them... Some, of course, have completely meaningless names concocted by marketing departments, or bear alphanumeric codes that show where they stand in the company's line-up. But this car was named for a king.

The young King Alfonso XIII of Spain was an early gentleman driver, motoring enthusiast and patron of Hispano-Suiza. He was such a fan, in fact, that he owned a good 30 of them, and drove them around Europe. The company, honored by his patronage, named its Type 15T in his honor: Type Alfonso XIII.

Few such examples, rare as they are, ever change hands, but the example you see here is destined for the auction block when RM Auctions sets up shop March 10 at Amelia Island. This 1913 model - chassis # 718 - is one of only four built, and packs a 3.6-liter inline four with 64 horsepower - not much by today's standards, but a veritable supercar in its time, capable of hitting a top speed of 80 miles an hour. It's also got more patina to it than an antique shop, but that's not all: it also comes with two bodies, one for the winter (pictured here) and open coachwork that could be installed for the summer.

It's expected to fetch between $750,000 and a cool million when the hammer drops, but if that's not entirely within your budget, you can check it out in the gallery of high-resolution images above, along with the auctioneer's description after the jump.
Continue reading Extremely rare 1913 Hispano-Suiza Type Alfonso XIII headed for Amelia Island

Extremely rare 1913 Hispano-Suiza Type Alfonso XIII headed for Amelia Island originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 15 Feb 2012 18:00:00 EST.
The world is replete with private auto collections that rival the best any museum has to offer. But no one person could have compiled the kind of spectacle that is the Milhous Collection - the embodiment of the life's work and collective wealth of brothers Bob and Paul Milhous of Boca Raton, Florida.

The Milhous brothers shared a love for everything mechanical, ranging from automobiles and petroliana to player pianos, clocks and even a full-size carousel, and collected them all. Having outgrown four previous locations, the Milhous brothers moved their collect to a 39,500 square-foot facility in Boca in the mid-'90s. And there it has remained, closed to the public, ever since. But now its contents are going under the hammer later this month by RM Auctions in association with Sotheby's.

Aside from the considerable musical and visual elements of the collection is more than a handful of noteworthy automobiles. A rare 1912 Oldsmobile Limited Five-Passenger Touring cabriolet (pictured above) is expected to go for around $1.5 million, joined by a 1933 Chrysler Custom Imperial Tourist by LeBaron, a 1939 Lagonda V1-2 Rapide Sports Roadster once owned by actor Robert Mongomery, a 1949 Rounds Rocket that was the first mid-engine/rear-drive Indy speedster and a 1934 Packard Super Eight Convertible Victoria by Dietrich that won Best in Show at Pebble Beach - just a few of the most noteworthy examples on the docket from the collection.

All-in-all, more than 30 classic automobiles, along with the rest of the collection, are to be auctioned on February 24 and 25 in conjunction with Boca Raton Concours d'Elegance. Take a stroll past the jump to delve into the full press releases, browse through the high-resolution image gallery, and follow the link for a virtual tour of the collection.
Continue reading Milhous Collection hitting the auction block in Boca

Milhous Collection hitting the auction block in Boca originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Feb 2012 14:31:00 EST.
Supercars play a volatile and ever-changing game of one-upmanship. With each new generation outperforming the last, it takes something truly special to endure the test of time. The Ferrari F40 is such an icon.

Built to celebrate Ferrari's fortieth anniversary, the F40 was the most extreme Ferrari ever produced to date, and the last to be ushered into production under the watchful eye of its founder Enzo Ferrari. Popular demand saw its original intended production run of 400 expand to over 1,300, but just 213 were made for the American market. This one is noteworthy.

This particular F40, you see, was built for Lee Iacocca during his tenure as chief executive at Chrysler. When the CEO of a major automaker orders a vehicle from another automaker, it says a lot. Even more so in this instance, because when this Ferrari was built, Iacocca's Chrysler also owned Lamborghini - Ferrari's longtime rival.

With fewer than 300 miles on the odometer and three owners in its twenty-one year history, this F40 is set to cross the auction block in one week at RM Auctions' event in Arizona. Follow the jump for the full listing, and check out the extensive image gallery for a closer look.
Continue reading Lee Iacocca's Ferrari F40 up for auction

Lee Iacocca's Ferrari F40 up for auction originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 15 Jan 2012 20:01:00 EST.
We can't tell you how many times we've each been asked about concept cars, "Why can't I buy one of those?" Well you can. Not often, mind you, and not cheaply. But every once in a while, one of those glitzy concepts you see on a show stand comes up for sale. And now, it's time to grab your checkbooks.

The show car (or truck, to be precise) you see here was the centerpiece of the Ford display at the 2001 Chicago Auto Show. Dubbed the F-150 Lightning Rod, it takes the formula employed by the SVT Lightning to a more stylized extent, with a chopped roofline and raked windshield, flush-fitted neon head- and tail-lights, and a minimalist interior. The whole package is finished in metallic red with a tribal tattoo motif. A 5.4-liter SOHC V8 sat under the hood, mated to a four-speed automatic. The 21-inch aluminum wheels wear tires whose tread is cut to match the tattoo pattern.

This unique concept truck is expected to fetch around $50,000 when it crosses the block at the RM Auctions event in Arizona next week, but while it's in proper running condition, it isn't certified to drive on public streets. Check it out the listing after the jump and browse the attached photo gallery.
Continue reading 2001 Ford F-150 Lightning Rod Concept up for grabs at RM Auctions

2001 Ford F-150 Lightning Rod Concept up for grabs at RM Auctions originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 15 Jan 2012 19:01:00 EST.
The unfortunate reality of a post-JFK, post-9/11 America means that our president needs to be hidden away from public view, and the details of his high-security transportation are just as hidden. But there was a time when the leader of the free world was paraded around for all to see, and for three presidents of these United States, this was the car in which they met their constituents.

Nicknamed the Queen Mary, this 1938 Cadillac V-16 President Convertible Parade Limousine was one of only two specially made for the White House (the other dubbed Queen Elizabeth), and was used by FDR, Truman and Eisenhower during their presidencies. Delivered on special order shortly after the introduction of Cadillac's second-generation sixteen-cylinder engine (which was smaller and lighter than its predecessor but delivered the same output), the Presidential Limousine's 165-inch wheelbase made it eleven inches longer than the already gargantuan production model.

After the end of WWII, as part of its routine maintenance, Cadillac replaced the sixteen-cylinder engines with V8s that were both more economical and easier to maintain. The cars were last used by President Eisenhower during his re-election campaign, after which longtime Cadillac dealer Jack Tallman, who witnessed the pair being rebuilt several times while visiting the factory, was offered the chance to purchase both cars. Tallman selected the Queen Mary for his collection, where it stayed for four decades. In 1999, the car was sold to one Al Wiseman, who showed it at Amelia Island in 2002 where it was awarded as the best original, unrestored vehicle.

It is now being offered for auction by the estate of John O'Quinn, its last owner, at the upcoming RM Auctions event in Arizona next week, where it is expected to fetch between $300,000 and $400,000. Have a closer look in the high-res image gallery and the detailed listing after the jump.
Continue reading 1938 Cadillac V16 convertible parades from White House to auction house

1938 Cadillac V16 convertible parades from White House to auction house originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 15 Jan 2012 11:09:00 EST.
With only 350 cars built, the Jaguar XJ220 is a collector's item, but some examples are rarer than others.

Having relied heavily on Tom Walkinshaw Racing for the development of the XJ220 in the first place, Jaguar turned to the outfit when it came time to assess the possibility of a competition version. Three XJ220C race cars were born as a result, but in order to homologate them for competition, Jaguar and TWR built six roadgoing examples dubbed XJ220S. One of them is now going up for auction.

To create the XJ220S, TWR removed all the aluminum bodywork (except the doors) and replaced it with carbon fiber, adding a front splitter, rear wing and wider side sills in the process. That helped drive weight down to just over 1,000 kg (2,200 lbs), while the twin-turbo V6 was retuned to deliver 680 horsepower.

This particular car's owner recently had TWR install a titanium exhaust and recalibrate the engine output to nice round 700 hp. He also had it repainted the same shade of grey as the Lamborghini Reventon, fitted more modern headlights, and refurbished the magnesium wheels. As a result, RM Auctions expects it to fetch between $225,000 and $300,000 when it crosses the block in Arizona next month. Full details in the auction listing after the jump.
Continue reading Super-rare Jaguar XJ220S heading to Arizona auction

Super-rare Jaguar XJ220S heading to Arizona auction originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 14 Jan 2012 20:01:00 EST.
The world's oldest running car, an 1884 De Dion Bouton Et Trapardoux Dos-A-Dos Steam Runabout, made history Friday, fetching $4.62 million at RM Auctions' Hershey, Pennsylvania event. Before a packed house, the 127-year-old ride quickly eclipsed its $500,000 starting bid.

By the time the dust had settled, the gavel fell at $4.2 million. The final price included a ten-percent buyer's premium. The crowd began applauding as soon as the car crept onto the stage and the enthusiasm didn't wane until well after the sale.

The Runabout had been in the same family for 81 years prior to the sale, and is one of six De Dion tricycles known to still exist. A total of 20 of the three-wheelers were built. When new, the trike had a top speed of 38 mph and a range of 20 miles on one tank of water. The vehicle that sold last night was the only car to show up for the world's first auto race, where it averaged 16 mph over a 20-mile course. Hop the jump for a press release.
Continue reading World's oldest running car fetches $4.6 million at auction

World's oldest running car fetches $4.6 million at auction originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 08 Oct 2011 12:02:00 EST. The world's oldest running car is officially up for auction. The 1884 De Dion Bouton Et Trapardoux Dos-A-Dos Steam Runabout has been owned by the same family for the past 81 years, and perhaps even more remarkably, has only had four owners in 127 years. With a top speed of 38 mph and a range of 20 miles on a single tank of water, the steam-powered tricycle has made the trek from London to Brighton four times and participated in the world's very first auto race. To be fair, it was was the only vehicle to show up, but that didn't stop it from averaging 16 mph and clipping off a top speed of 37 mph over the 20 mile course.

If the Runabout's motorsports credentials aren't enough for you, the vehicle brought home double awards at the 1997 Pebble Beach Concours.

A total of 20 De Dion tricycles were manufactured, and of those, only six remain. This is the only operable example in existence, and if you want to make it yours, you'll need to give your checkbook a workout. RM Auctions expects the De Dion to command bids between $2 million and $2.5 million. Hit the jump for a quick video on the vehicle.
Continue reading World's oldest running car up for auction

World's oldest running car up for auction originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 25 Sep 2011 14:06:00 EST.
There are no less than five auctions slated for this week in Monterey, with literally hundreds of collectable cars up for sale. Bonhams, Gooding & Company, Mecum, RM and Russo and Steele have all been consigning cars for the past several months to try and lure in the thousands of automotive enthusiasts that gather in the Monterey peninsula every August.

It can be hard to fathom the amount and value of cars actually being auctioned off in Monterey, so to put things into perspective, collector car insurance company Hagerty has compiled the estimated net worth of every car being offered up in Monterey later this week. The total? An incredible $230 million.

A few of the highlights that will add to that total include a 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza (pictured above) expected to sell for around $3 million, a pair of ex-Steve McQueen cars and the 1957 Ferrari 250 TR Prototype that could very well break the overall record price of a car sold at auction.

Check back later this week for highlights of the auctions, as well as the rest of our Monterey coverage.
Monterey car auctions to gross estimated $230 million in sales originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 17 Aug 2011 09:00:00 EST.
Last year, RM Auctions held a special Ford-themed sale during the Monterey car week, offering a unique chance to buy various Ford concept cars built in the last decade. While that was a one-time event, RM is once again be working with Ford to auction off a select number of concept cars for this year.

First up is the Ford Shelby GR-1 Concept, first introduced to the public at Pebble Beach in 2004. Built to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the legendary Shelby Daytona Coupe, the car features a silver paint scheme with blue stripes and 12-spoke 19-inch wheels. Unfortunately, the car is not a running example, unlike the polished aluminum version that debuted at the Detroit Auto Show a few months later.

Next up is the Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster Concept that was first shown at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show. A precursor to the Ford Thunderbird production car, the Sports Roadster is set apart by a molded fiberglass tonneau that's neatly integrated into the rear decklid.

As is custom for Ford when auctioning off cars, proceeds from the sale will be donated to charity. The sale of the two concept cars, each valued between $125,000 and $200,000, will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
Pair of Ford concept cars to be auctioned in Monterey originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 07 Aug 2011 18:06:00 EST.
For the 1939 World's Fair, Pontiac built a Deluxe Six bodied in Plexiglass. Part of the Previews of Progress pavilion in which General Motors' Futurama showed off what was to come in the world of autos, the 'invisible' Pontiac is credited as the first transparent car in America. And there were no shortcuts taken with its body: the Plexiglass form was fabricated by the company that brought the material to market in 1933, Rohm & Haas.

The see-through sedan was sold at RM Auctions' St. John's auction in Michigan on July 30, fetching $308,000. Not bad appreciation for a domestic oddity that cost $25,000 to build when new. You can check out the high-res gallery of its innards, including copper and chrome metalwork and white moldings and wheels, and get the exhaustive details on it after the jump.
Continue reading 1939 Pontiac Ghost Car commands $308,000 at auction

1939 Pontiac Ghost Car commands $308,000 at auction originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 01 Aug 2011 17:58:00 EST.
In the 1930s, the Bugatti Type 57 was, apart from its grand prix racers, the only vehicle offered by Molsheim. It gave rise to several body types, the most famous of which was the iconic Atlantic, but those represented only a handful of the 710 Type 57s that were built over its seven years of production.

Relying primarily on third-party coachbuilders, most of Type 57s were bodied as coupes, a handful as sedans, but a few were fitted with open-top coachwork. RM Auctions is offering one such Grand Raid Roadster at Pebble Beach this year, and has now released details of a second convertible 57 set to join it on the auction block.

This Stelvio Cabriolet with coachwork by Gangloff of Colmar was believed to have been commissioned by the Pernod family (of aperitif distillation fame), and has a fully documented history from its 74 years of ownership since. Well cared for and properly maintained, this Stelvio has its original 3.2-liter inline-eight and four-speed gearbox and is expected to fetch between $700,000 and $800,000. Follow the jump for the full details.
Continue reading '38 Bugatti Type 57 Stelvio Cabriolet hitting the auction block in Monterey

'38 Bugatti Type 57 Stelvio Cabriolet hitting the auction block in Monterey originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 24 Jul 2011 10:04:00 EST.
The Monterey car week is just a month away, and we're starting to get a good idea of what's in store for us come August. One of the highlights of the week are the auctions, particularly the one put on by RM Auctions, and the lineup of cars going across the block is looking very impressive. We've already told you about a beautiful 1935 Bugatti Type 57 Grand Raid Roadster and a 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza, and now a pair of ex-Steve McQueen cars have been added to the list.

First up is a 1970 Porsche 911S that was delivered to McQueen while he was on the set of the movie Le Mans. The car actually made an appearance in several of the movie's opening scenes and is in mostly original condition with just <strike>12,400</strike> 112,400 miles.

Next up is a 1953 Siata 208/S Spider that was purchased by McQueen in 1956. Since then, the car has passed through several owners and has most recently taken to the show circuit with appearances at the Pebble Beach Concours, Quail Motorsports Gathering and Concorso Italiano. The Siata has recently been refurbished with period-correct components, including the 2.0-liter V8 producing 115 horsepower.

We'll have live photos of each of the cars come August, but until then, check out the pair of galleries below or read more about the cars after the jump.

*CORRECTION* - We initially misread the description for the Porsche 911S and stated that it was previously owned by Otis Chandler and Jerry Seinfeld. This is not the case. Rather, the Porsche 917 featured in the movie Le Mans was owned by both those noted collectors and not the 911S. RM has also informed us that the actual mileage of the car was incorrectly listed and is 112,400, not 12,400.
Continue reading Ex-Steve McQueen cars to be auctioned off in Monterey

Ex-Steve McQueen cars to be auctioned off in Monterey originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 14 Jul 2011 18:30:00 EST. Classic cars change hands all the time. What brings them to the spotlight is usually one of several factors. It might have a track record distinguished by race wins. It might be in particularly good shape. It might have had a starring role in a major motion picture. It might be a particular rarity from a small production run, or maybe it served to showcase the manufacturer's offerings at a major auto show. Having all these factors come together on one specific automobile is a rarity, but that's what we're looking at with this stunning 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza Spider.

One of only 35 built, Ferrari displayed this Spider at the 1955 Brussels Motor Show, after which it was brought to America by famed importer Luigi Chinetti who sold it to his rival Porsche importer John von Neumann in Los Angeles. Neumann set the Monza on an aggressive race program up and down the West Coast that saw it win twice and score another nine podiums at various sportscar racing events, bringing on board, among others, no less a talent than Phil Hill to man the wheel.

Most notably, the car was driven by Fred Astair in a fictionalized post-apocalyptic grand prix in the movie On The Beach. Since then, chassis 0492M has been part of several prestigious collections, but after a comprehensive two-year restoration is now heading to the auction block at Pebble Beach, where RM Auctions will be putting it up for grabs with prices reportedly expected to top $3 million. With a 260-horsepower 3.0-liter DOHC four similar to that found in the 500 TRC that RM sold for $4 million at Villa d'Este, this Monza Spider is described by one noted Ferrari expert as the best she's ever seen.
