AddAn oil slick is worth a million Priuses and other numbers from the Gulf Oil Spill

The exact amount of oil that is still spewing into the Gulf of Mexico from BP's broken tap is a number under some dispute, but the mess could be increasing at a rate of a million gallons a day. Or, as the WaPo put it, "roughly one Valdez spill every week." So, how much gasoline has been wasted by all that oil escaping into the ocean? One way to measure it is the way Green Car Reports did: by asking how many Toyota Prius hybrids would you need to sell to offset the loss? Their answer: almost a m

AddToyota starts offering $2,000 incentives on Prius to counter dwindling tax breaks

Toyota sold a bunch of Prius hybrids last month but now the company is offering $2,000 in discounts at the dealership. The move comes on the heels of fewer tax credits available to Prius shoppers. The discounts range from $600 to $2,000 for features such a navigation, hands-free mobile phone connection and rear-view cameras. Toyota earlier offered low-cost lease options and no-interest financing packages. The automaker is looking to boost Prius sales 64 percent this year with a goal of 175,000 u

AddToyota hybrids sell briskly in February; Prius sets all-time monthly record

It was only last month that analysts feared Toyota Prius sales had seen its best days. A combination of tax credits going away, no more HOV-lane stickers in California and stable gas prices led to a comfortable supply of Priuses. For some dealers, it was the first time that the prospective Prius shoppers didn't have to go on a waiting list. The topic of incentives even surfaced.

AddHybrid-car sales grew in 2006, starting to slow

It was a good year for hybrid sales last year, up 28 percent over 2005 numbers, according to numbers out from R.L. Polk & Co. today. But, thanks to some tax credits ending (sorry, Toyota) the rate of increase might have peaked. Polk's numbers are:

AddPrius sales up 135 percent in the UK

To move Prius units in the U.S., Toyota dealers have been offering various incentives like low monthly payments or low financing. Over in the UK, Prius sales are growing thanks in part to an expansion of London's congestion charge zone (the Prius is exempt from the £8 daily charge, so commuters who drive into the zone each weekday could save more than £2,000 each year. That's a lot of Fish & Chips). The zone expansion starts next week, and Prius sales have been up for a while. To
