Ford will officially unveil its revised 2011 Super Duty pickups Thursday at the State Fair of Texas, and the all-new, Ford-designed and produced 6.7-liter Power Stroke (aka Scorpion) diesel is the star of the show. We've <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/31/beware-the-scorpion-2011-ford-super-duty-gets-all-new-6-7-liter/">already given you the details on the Scorpion</a>, as well as a description of how quiet it is, and now Ford has now posted a video of one of the diesels on a dynamometer switching from the old single injection pulse control to the new multi-pulse strategy. <br />
<br />
The difference in sound levels is quite startling. By splitting the fuel delivery into multiple pulses (and ignition events) the pressure impulse on the piston is flattened out and spread over a larger time, mitigating the knocking sound. The new engine will be available in production trucks in the second quarter of 2010 and you can check it out for yourself in the video <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/24/video-aural-evidence-new-ford-6-2l-scorpion-diesel-is-quieter/">after the jump</a>.<br />

Slated to appear in Ford's trucks by 2011, the new oil burner code-named Scorpion is a 6.7-liter V8 with a host of innovations, some of them seemingly borrowed from cross-town rival GM.<br /><br />But the first thing you'll notice is that mammoth radiator. PickupTrucks.com estimates that the cooler up front is up to 20-percent larger than the one on the 2008 Super Duty, and that one had already been enlarged by 33-percent over its forebear. The extra cooling could be needed for "extreme towing applications", and if there's one truck that's an extreme tower, it's the F-Series Super Duty.<br /><br />The Scorpion diesel's innards will be enhanced with reversed intake and exhaust flow, something found on GM's Duramax diesel, and lighter aluminum cylinder heads. Now, thanks to some eagle-eyed sharp shooters, we can see the new oil-burning mill in <a href="http://www.pickuptrucks.com/html/news/ford/44diesel/first-spy-shots-underhood-of-f-150-4-4-diesel.html">its natural habitat</a> under the hood of a Ford F-150. Sure, there's lots of black plastic covering all the good stuff, but we can get a glimpse of all the assorted plumbing that will make this engine squeaky clean. We can also have a good shot of the intercooler, peaking out between the grille and the radiator.<br /><br />This engine is labeled as a Power Stroke, Ford's long-running moniker for the diesels equipped in its Super Duty trucks. For years, those mills have been made by Navistar, but after the fallout between the automaker and the supplier, Ford is now using a derivative of the diesel from Land Rover in Europe, though the 4.4L iteration will be made in Mexico for the North American market. His brain is like the bed of a Ford F-450 filled with the esoteric details of heavy duty diesel pickups and 3/4-ton gassers. Plus, he's from the old school of automotive journalism and has made a successful transition to the web, which means his reporting is always knowledgeable and balanced despite it being delivered digitally. When Levine told us he was planning on doing a comprehensive comparo of today's heavy duty pickups, however, we were unprepared for the depth of the final product. <br /><br />The 2007 PickupTruck.com Heavy Duty Shootout pits six HD pickups from Chevy/GMC, Ford and Dodge against each other on a totally level and unbiased playing field. Levine went so far as to hire a third-party company to perform all of the instrumented testing to remove any trace of subjectivity in the results. The players are three gas-powered 3/4-ton pickups including the 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT Quad Cab 4x4, 2008 Ford F-250 FX4 Super Duty Crew Cab 4x4 and 2007 GMC Sierra 2500 HD SLE Crew Cab 4x4, and three diesel-powered one-ton pickups including the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 LT Crew Cab 4x4, 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 SLT Quad Cab 4x4 and 2008 Ford F-350 King Ranch Super Duty Crew Cab 4x4. Ford also threw in a 2008 Ford F-450 Lariat Super Duty Crew Cab 4x4 so that Levine and his team could attempt to prove how powerful this big rig really is. <br /><br />We've just finished reading Part 1 and 2 of the three-part series, which includes an extremely knowledgeable and fact-filled introduction as well as the first battery of tests, including a "squat" test and 1/4-mile performance runs. Intended to satisfy those customers who find traditional "one ton" dually trucks to be a bit too limiting, this massive vehicle pegged our more-is-better meter. With <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/06/05/ford-super-duty-seeing-super-sales/">so much money</a> passing hands between Ford and Navistar, you might think they would find a way to negotiate a deal regarding their diesel engine partnership(s). You would be right, assuming you think that starting <a href="http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070606/REG/706060321/1170">yet another lawsuit</a> is a way to patch things up. That's right... another lawsuit. This one is still about diesel truck engines, but instead of the large 6.4 liter Power Stroke, this one cites a smaller 4.4-liter diesel engine <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/10/13/diesel-confirmed-for-light-duty-f-150-by-2009/">slated for the F-150</a> truck in 2009 or 2010. Navistar has been Ford's long-time supplier of diesel engines that carry the "Power Stroke" moniker for Ford, and Navistar is claiming that if Ford goes to market with the 4.4-liter engine, it would constitute a breach of contract. At this point, it seems unclear whether Navistar is claiming to have designed the engine in question, or if it believes it had a contract to do so, but either way, things could get even messier between the two companies.

Some people describe the ensuing event as an explosion, but the ideal is a controlled burn, but it's still so fast that it could be confused for an uncontrolled explosion. An engine is a practical application of thermodynamics, when it comes right down to it. The piston moves by the pressure exerted by the burning fuel mixture, and as the piston moves down the bore, pressure reduces, and work is extracted from the fuel.<br /><br />Of course, there's a lot more to it, but that's the basics. We're sure you had a little animated diagram dancing around in your head the first time you really tried to understand the common Otto cycle. My mental flash player still fires up when I'm trying to figure out different cycles like the Atkinson. Wouldn't it be great to actually <strong>see</strong> inside the cylinder during combustion events? Jarvis confirmed that the truck in the video is one of the three pickups Ford described last week when it issued a recall to address the problem. While not entirely certain which of the trucks it is, Jarvis said it's one of the two trucks that was purchased in Canada, probably the one that was started in extremely cold temperatures (appx. minus 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit) and not given sufficient time to warm up before being driven. That situation could make short work of any engine, and the resultant blown bearing seal in the turbo that leaked combustible fluid into the exhaust system should not necessarily be considered a defective part.<br /><br />Clearly, Ford is very concerned about the reputation of its new 6.4L Power Stroke, which is evident by how quickly it took action with a recall to address three isolated incidents that resulted in the same outcome, i.e. flaming tailpipes. The real issue in each case appears to be this newfangled Diesel Particulate Filter, versions of which are used not only by the Ford Super Duty, but also the Heavy Duty GMT900 and Dodge Ram pickups. Considering that all three heavy duty pickups use a process of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_particulate_filter#Regeneration">regeneration</a> to burn away accumulated particulates in their respective DPFs, the potential for flaming tailpipes exists in all three trucks if an unmetered amount of flammable liquid gets in there somehow. We're certainly not cutting Ford any slack here, but considering it likely sells more heavy duty trucks equipped with diesels than the other two automakers, statistically speaking this was bound to happen to a Ford first. It made its way to some other forums before finally popping up on more mainstream sites today. Literally nothing is known for sure about the video, like who uploaded it, whether or not the truck spewing flames is one of the three Ford refers to in its recall notice, or even if the light show is the result of leaky injectors or a cracked turbo, the two issues that supposedly prompted the recall of all 2008 Ford Super Dutys equipped with the new 6.4L Power Stroke diesel in the first place.<br /><br />What we do know is that it's pretty shocking to watch a truck throwing flames in idle, even more so when it's revved. We think it's important to be clear about what may be causing this and why Ford issued the recall in the first place. <p>This whole mess started when Ford began debiting International's invoices to the tune of $125 million to help pay for expensive warranty costs incurred repairing the notoriously problematic last-gen 6.0L Power Stroke. As it turns out, Ford spent an estimated $1 billion on warranty costs due to a faulty fuel system on these engines supplied by International. For its part, International disputes the $1 billion figure and has refused to help foot the bill. Ford took action by filing a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/13/engine-wars-ford-sues-international/">law suit</a> and International retaliated by <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/02/26/aw-snap-ford-supplier-stops-production-of-super-dutys-power-s/">stopping production</a> of the new 6.4L Power Stroke, which has resulted in the loss of 4,000 units of Ford's most profitable vehicle.<br /></p>
<p>The temporary agreement calls for Ford to stop debiting International's invoices and actually pay the company. In return, the diesel engine supplier will resume shipments of the new 6.4L Power Stroke. The judge also ordered both sides to continue meeting in order to come up with a final solution, but that won't be easy since there's a lot bad blood between these two companies now. We don't know who's right in this case, but we do know this fire will likely flare up again.<br /></p>

<p>If it weren't for bad luck, Ford would have no luck at all. The single largest profit-source for Ford Motor Company would be the F-Series Pickup and the Power Sroke diesel <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/05/ford-prices-2008-super-duty/">Super Duty</a> is a huge chunk of that revenue. Navistar International Engines has powered the Super Duty since 1979, which makes them a large component of Ford's success in the market. The good Karma between Ford and International started to go sour with the quality issues surrounding the 6.0L Power Stroke diesel in the last generation of Super Duty trucks. Relations got worse when Ford recently <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/01/13/engine-wars-ford-sues-international/">sued International</a>, saying it was not complying with warranty cost-sharing agreements. Ford also contended that International unjustifiably raised prices on its engines. Now International has decided to stop supplying the all-new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/02/02/ford-super-duty-6-4l-diesel-tested-to-the-max/">6.4L engine</a> that powers the 2008 Super Duty, claiming that Ford is not honoring the contract terms under which the engines are built. <br /></p>
<p>Navistar has given no indication how long this impasse could last, but every second a Super Duty isn't being assembled by Ford workers is money down the drain. With the cash problems Ford already has, this could get ugly quick. We're guessing Ford doesn't have much choice but to kiss and make up with International in order to keep these too-important Power Stroke Super Duty trucks rolling off the assembly line.</p>

Power on customer satisfaction with modern heavy truck powertrains. The 2006 Heavy Duty Truck Engine/Transmission Study ranked engines from the 2004 model year by quality, performance, cost of ownership, and warranty, and revealed what one would reasonably expect from new technology. </p>
<p>An average of 74 problems per 100 vehicles was reported, which represents a 60% increase in trouble over the prior year. This was attributed directly to the emission control systems that were phased in during 2003 and 2004. Fuel economy also declined from 6.04 MPG in the 2004 study to 5.72 MPG - a drop of over 5%. Ranked highest in the study was Caterpillar, and the company's ACERT technology allowed the C12 and C15 (pictured above) to lead the ratings of individual engines. Unfortunately, unless you hold a CDL, it's highly unlikely that either one of them will find their way into your personal fleet.</p>
<p>So, what does this mean for consumers of passenger vehicles? Just as we've experienced the evolution of emission controls on gasoline engines, problems can be expected as manufacturers roll out clean diesel technology. How long it will take to sort out these issues is not yet clear, but we're guessing that things get sorted out rather quickly, and indeed some of the problems that are currently affecting heavy trucks may very well be eliminated before it trickles down to smaller oilburners. </p>

It's big, real big and with reason. The new uber-truck boasts the highest towing capacity in its class, with the ability to pull 24,000 pounds or haul around 6,000 in payload. It will come equipped with Tow Command, a integrated trailer brake controller, TorqShift, to boost power in high-load conditions, and a few other toys that make loading, unloading and towing less of a chore. <p>General Motors' recent (and vague) <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/08/24/gm-announces-revised-duramax-6-6l-and-new-light-duty-diesel/">announcement of a new V8 diesel</a> has led to significant speculation, especially with regard to power output and packaging size of the engine. As a preemptive strike against doubters, the company recently allowed Diesel Forecast to take a spin in a Buick Rainer equipped with the mystery oil-burner. </p>
<p>For starters, the "light duty" (intended for vehicles with a GVWR of under 8,600 lbs) will produce somewhere in the neighborhood of 330 HP and 520 lb-ft of torque. All that torque comes online around 1800 RPM and extends to 4500 RPM. We feel that these numbers should keep the average driver quite happy (diesel power junkies will just have to wait until aftermarket PCM tuners become available). For this we can credit the wonders of variable-geometry turbocharging, although at this point GM is not saying how many hairdryers they are using (two would be our guess, given the direction in which others are moving). </p>
<p>We were skeptical that a DOHC turbocharged V8 would fit into the same space as GM's ultra-compact pushrod gasoline V8s, but this does indeed appear to be the case (see the above outline drawing from GM, where its outline is shown against the GenIV L92). The fact that it fits under the hood of a GMT360 - a surprisingly tight environment, given the vehicle's external dimensions - speaks to the compact packaging of this engine, and means that we could see it popping up in just about any RWD product from the General. </p>
<p>On the emissions front, GM sees the engine utilizing urea injection with selective catalyst reduction to meet the EPA's 2010 Bin 5 regulations. </p>

With that in mind, GM and Ford will announce the power ratings of their newest oil burners during, where else, the Texas State Fair.<br /><br />For General Motors, Ford and Dodge, the magical torque figure is 650.<br /><br />Dodge's newly redesigned 6.7-liter, inline-six will dole out 350 hp and 650 ft./lbs. of torque when equipped in their 2500 and 3500 lines of pickups. Ford will follow Dodge's lead and boost displacement of their Powerstroke V8 to 6.4-liters, from the previous model's 6-liter powerplant, with horsepower expected to crest the 350 hp mark as well. Both vehicles will go on sale this January.<br /><br />The General, whose offerings should hit dealer lots in the first quarter of 2007 as 2008 models, will attempt to win back some of its 'Professional Grade' consumers with the new Duramax. The regulations are expected to address potential issues arising with urea injection, such as the availability of the substance, making sure that the system and its low-fluid-level warning system are tamperproof, and dealing with urea's freezing point of 11F. One of the largest areas of contention between the EPA and automakers involves a proposed interlock between the urea level-monitoring system and the engine that would perhaps disable the starter or lock the vehicle's fuel cap if urea levels drop too low to ensure proper function. </p>
<p>Starting in 2010, all diesel vehicles sold in the US must meet or exceed "Bin 5" classification of the Tier II clean air standards, which would effectively make oilburners as clean as gasoline engines. Urea injection helps reduce the level of oxides of nitrogen when injected into the tailpipe, and does so at a cost perhaps 10% lower than the competing NOx trap technology. Bosch sees the combination of urea and selective catalyst reduction as <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/05/08/automakers-suppliers-meet-to-discuss-diesel-plans/">the path</a> toward diesel cleanliness, and GM has shown off the technology on a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2005/09/05/gm-may-implement-urea-injection-on-diesels-by-2009/">diesel light-truck prototype</a>. VW's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2005/07/13/epa-hesitates-to-allow-new-diesel-emissions-technology/">emission certification problems</a> with the diesel Touareg last year elevated the profile of urea injection - and the problems surrounding it - here in the United States, and prompted the EPA to start moving.</p>

On Sept. 28th, Ford will unveil its new 2008 F-Series Super Duty pickup and new 6.4-liter Power Stroke diesel at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. The big news is that the new Power Stroke will be able to run on Ultra Low Sulfur Fuel, the sale of which will be mandated nationwide as of this October. The engine is larger in displacement than the perpetually plagued 6.0-liter unit it replaces and features some high-tech trickery to achieve particulate emissions levels that equal those of gas-powered engines. <p>Diesel Power magazine, a publication dedicated to compression-ignition pickup trucks and the people that love them, has released its list of the Top 10 Diesel Engines. Now, considering the difficulty of naming 10 diesel engines that have been sold here in the US - much less making a case for the inclusion of each on a top-10 list - the editors decided to have a bit of fun with this task. How much fun? Well, the massive Wartsila-Sulzer ship engine and its 1,556,002 cubic inches of displacement (that's no typo, and it works out to over 25,000 liters) slotted in at #9 on the list.</p>
<p>For those not willing to think outside the world of passenger vehicles, the relevant entries break down like so - the B-series Cummins squeaked in at #10, the GM/Isuzu Duramax slots in at #6, the Ford/International 7.3L Powerstroke slides in at #5, and the VW 5.3L V10 is a bit of a surprise at #3. Now, it remains to be seen how <em>Diesel Power</em>'s readers accept this rankings, and we're guessing that it's going to be a busy month in its mailroom. </p>

He stumbled upon a 2008 Ford Super Duty F-250 Powerstroke in a parking lot and started snapping away. The driver eventually returned and this is where Doane's day took a sharp turn towards the bizarre and frightening. The driver in question, who our sources tell us is indeed a Ford employee, snapped a synapse and chased Doane on public roads for a half an hour, including following him in and out of parking lots, tailgating him while running through highway traffic, and nearly swallowing his car in the gaping maw of the F-250's grille at stoplights. <br /><br />To hear it in Doane's own words is a treat, and you can do so <a href="http://www.cheersandgears.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10467">here</a>.
