We've driven the new 991-series Porsche 911, and now the next chapter of the new 911 story - the 2013 Turbo - has been caught proving itself in the wintertide climate. Its most important details - the front and rear bumpers and side intakes - remain behind camo, but we now get a look at how the tail sits across the wider rump, and we think it looks quite good.

When it's finally revealed, the new 911 Turbo is expected to put out more than 500 horsepower - numbers from 520 hp to 550 hp have been mentioned - from it's tri-turboed (yes, three turbos) 3.6-liter flat six. Both the seven-speed PDK and seven-speed manual transmissions should be on offer, and the lighter-than-the-last-Turbo package should be screamingly fast. Have a look at the high-res gallery to see it from just about every angle.
Porsche 911 Turbo caught out and about again originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 30 Jan 2012 17:58:00 EST. Nothing, that is, except this 1986 Rinspeed Porsche 911 R69.

The loony Swiss outfit put its twist on the Flachbau by adding hot pink paint, color-matched wheels, the requisite body kit, and Testarossa-inspired side slats. Inside, Rinspeed installed power seats, the best hi-fi audio 1986 had to offer, and steering-wheel controls that would give Ray LaHood a nervous breakdown today.

True to the era that spawned it, this car's looks were dated almost before it left the factory floor.

In a strange way, though, that's part of its appeal. If you've got $79,000 to pony up, this Rinspeed R69, claimed to be the only one in the U.S., can be yours. Check out the entire eBay listing, or eyeball the photo gallery above for the whole plasticky package.
eBay Find of the Day: Rinspeed Porsche 911 R69 is spectacularly Eighties originally appeared on Autoblog on Sat, 08 Oct 2011 20:01:00 EST.
The new 991-generation of the Porsche 911 is now upon us, with the Carrera and Carrera S coupes unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show. So what do you think? Because love it or hate it, it'll be around for a while; 14 years, if the latest reports prove accurate.

According to Car, the new 911 will be around for two seven-year product lifecycles. And over the course of its life, you can bet that it'll spawn as many derivatives as the model it replaces.

First down the pipeline will reportedly be the Cabriolet, expected to arrive in both regular (3.4-liter 350-horsepower flat-six) and S (3.8-liter/400hp) versions in 2012 with semi-rigid folding panels under a new type of fabric that will look like an ordinary convertible but offer more solidity once up and folding beneath a hard boot instead of a fabric tonneau cover.

Towards the end of next year, we're to expect the all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S, followed by the 520-horsepower twin-spool 911 Turbo in 2013 and Turbo Cabrio in 2014, with the enthusiast's favorite 911 GT3 also arriving in 2013. The 911 Targa is tipped to go back in late 2013 or early 2014 from its sliding glass roof to a more conventional removable panel, with Speedster and hybrid versions also under consideration.

Porsche is also said to be developing a new generation of smaller-displacement turbo sixes to fit into the 911 in place of the ever-growing unit that has ballooned to as much as a four full liters in the GT3 RS 4.0. How Zuffenhausen will then differentiate the 911 Turbo when they've all got spools remains to be seen, but we'll reportedly have until 2015 to find out.
Porsche's latest 911 to last fourteen years, dowsized turbo engines under development originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 27 Sep 2011 15:02:00 EST.
Silly Porsche, rivers are for boats. As the story goes, this particular Swiss Porsche owner had to learn that the hard way when his 911 Turbo was driven by a friend off a boat dock leading to the Rhine River. We assume this "friend" will forever be mentioned at cocktail parties in stories that start with "You won't believe..." and end with "... so I jump-kicked him in the throat, and that's why we're not friends anymore."
Lego Porsche 911 RC Car - Click above to watch video after the jump

We've grown a little callous when it comes to Lego creations. We blame the internet. After all, with the world 's Lego builders itching to show off their latest Technic and basic block constructions, the bar is set continuously higher.

These days, our eyebrows don't arch at anything less than Lego perfection, which is why we're head over heels for the 911 Turbo Cabriolet PDK in the video after the jump. It's pure mechanical obsession in the best way possible. Everything works, from the retractable hard top to hood release. The car even boasts the same steering rack ratio as the real deal.

All told, there are over 3,500 parts wrapped up in the vehicle, including eight electric motors, three remote controls and around 21 feet of wire. Even more impressive is the fact that this is no static model. The transmission actually functions and puts power through an all-wheel drive system. Consider our minds effectively blown.
Porsche makes some amazingly capable and exciting machines. The German speedmeisters at Ruf are fans of those cars, but they like to take them, lock them in their <strike>insane asylum</strike> factory and release them back into the world as roadgoing rocketships. The company's latest creation, unveiled on the 2011 Geneva Motor Show floor, is the Ruf Rt 12 R.

Based on the (quite pedestrian by comparison) Porsche 911 Turbo, the Ruf Rt 12 R begins life with the stock 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine. That unit is good for 500 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque (516 lb-ft with the overboost function). After Ruf gets its mitts on the powerplant, output swells to 730 hp and 693 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired to Porsche's six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel-drive system. And if you're a rich lunatic, you can opt for rear-wheel drive.

Ruf also works its magic on the body of the Rt 12 R. Carbon fiber is applied to the front fenders, hood, luggage cover, seats and is available optionally on the roof. The side and rear windows are plastic instead of glass to further aid in the quest for lightness. This weight reduction, along with the massive increase in power, has helped Ruf claim an impressive 230 mph top speed for the Rt 12 R.

One is an American-bred land rocket and the other a Teutonic track terror. They are the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo, and Motor Trend has pitted them head-to-head.

Former Autoblog scribe and known flip-flop aficionado Jonny Lieberman provides the voice work and the words for the buff book's latest supercar comparo, with Herr Lieberman calling the 911 Turbo "the fastest manual transmission car we've ever tested." Acceleration is one thing, but what about sex appeal? According to Jonny, "... both cars were alternately parked in front of my house for two weeks, but I discovered pink lipstick marks only on the Corvette's windshield. That's right, someone kissed the ZR1."

We have video of both cars running side-by-side for 1,320 feet and the winner is not much of a surprise. The overall winner of the comparison? Well, that's another story, and the results may surprise you. Hop the jump to see the clip of these two going head-to-head [*Warning: Autoplay].

We didn't make it out to this year's Spectre 341 Challenge as time just wasn't on our side. Fortunately, we can live vicariously through a few of the participants, including Automobile scribe Ezra Dyer.

If you're not familiar with the event, it has roots dating back to the early seventies, when then-president of the Ferrari Owners Club of Southern California, Hans Tanner, organized a hill climb up Nevada Highway 341.

In the years since, the event has waxed and waned, but the purpose has remained the same: run up the 5.2-mile hill, tackle over 20 turns and scrape just north of 6,200 feet in a time of 3:41 - or less. Can Dyer do it in a Porsche 911 Turbo? Make the jump to find out, read more about the event here and look for Dyer's account of the run in the October issue of Automobile.
Continue reading Video: Ezra Dyer tackles the Spectre 341 Challenge in a Porsche 911 Turbo

Video: Ezra Dyer tackles the Spectre 341 Challenge in a Porsche 911 Turbo originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 22 Jul 2010 20:01:00 EST.
The kids from Motor Trend are at it again. The crew has turned out some pretty tasty videos over the past few months, but nothing like the clip after the jump. Editor-At-Large Arthur St. Antoine and two of his cohorts wrangle three icons of the modern supercar era through the desert outside of Las vegas. The contenders are three German heavyweights - the Porsche 911 Turbo, the Audi R8 5.2 FSI and the new kid on the block, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. The guys even managed to convince the California Highway Patrol to close down a section of road for their very own playground. Jealous yet? Yeah, us too.

That's alright, though, because St. Antoine and the rest of the MT posse were kind enough to bring along a few HD cameras so they could share a hard day at the office with the rest of the world. Surprisingly enough, you get plenty of raw driving footage with nothing but the sound of three German engines as your soundtrack. Sure, there are a few auto journo clichés floating around in the voiceover, but hey, it's a video about supercars. What more do you want? Hit the jump to enjoy for yourself.

Fifth Gear compares the Audi R8 V10 against the Porsche 911 Turbo - Follow the jump to watch the video

The problem with physics is that it is largely immutable. Less mass plus more low-end torque and comparable power generally equates to better performance. Take, for example, the Porsche 911 Turbo convertible and the Audi R8 V10 Spyder. As much as we love the design of the R8, it is rather porky at 3,792 pounds. At 3,627 pounds, the Turbo convertible is probably the heaviest 911 ever, but it's still got a 165-pound advantage over the Audi.

The Audi's V10 produces 525 horsepower to the 500 hp of the 911, although Porsche's ratings are generally considered to be conservative. On the other hand, the V10 only produces 390 pound-feet of torque with a peak at 6,500 rpm. The turbocharged and direct injected flat-six of the 911 cranks out 480 lb-ft at just 1,950 rpm.

As the gang from Fifth Gear found out, this adds up to a measurable advantage in acceleration, braking and track times for the rear-engined machine, although the Porsche did seem to be a bit more challenging to drive fast. Check out the video after the jump for the full results.

We'll admit it - one of the best parts about being an auto journalist is the ability to spend time with many different cars, most of which are in our possession for a week at a time. And while the automakers trust us to be extremely careful and avoid damage at all costs, sometimes the unavoidable happens. Usually it's a chipped windshield or a bit of curb rash, and even that's enough to make us wince and break out the apology pen. Peter Cheney, a writer for Canada's The Globe and Mail, had one such experience lately, but he wasn't behind the wheel. In fact, he wasn't even in the car.

We're very accustomed to the idea of friends and family members wanting to take a closer look at the cars we're testing, and when Cheney's 16-year-old son wanted to snag a closer look inside the Porsche 911 Turbo his dad was driving that night, Cheney thought nothing of it. That is, until his son came tearing back into the house, a look of panic in his eyes. When Cheney went to investigate what was up, he saw the unthinkable - the big-buck sports car had rocketed through his garage door, causing an reported $11,000 in damage to the car and an additional $2,700 in garage repairs. "Yikes" doesn't quite cover it.

Be sure to head over to The Globe and Mail to read the full account of what happened. It's an incident that we hope never happens to any of us, but most importantly, we're glad no one was hurt. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

2010 Techart Porsche 911 Turbo - Click above for high-res image gallery

The infamous Porsche tuners at Techart have unveiled the company's new tuning program for the 2010 911 Turbo. If you find the car's styling boring and the power lacking, the crew has what you need to wrench a full 620 horsepower out of the factory 3.8-liter flat-six. Techart starts by ditching the factory exhaust manifolds and pipes for an easy-breathing system built in-house. Throw in a sports air filter and an ECU reflash, and you've got an extra 120 horsepower over what Stuttgart deems necessary.

As usual, Techart has worked over the rest of the car's systems to keep up with the nudge in power. A set of fully-adjustable coilovers have found their way under the Turbo, along with massive brakes on all four corners. The company will even throw in its "Nose Lift" system for the right price, meaning the 620 horsepower missile won't quiver in fear at the site of a speed bump.

The tuner is also providing a selection of aero kits, from the subdued Stage I to the somewhat more air-inlet happy Stage II. Both of the front fascias wear Techart's new Audi-esque day time running lights set low in the car's grille. We can feel Porsche designers cringing from here.

2010 Techart GTStreet R - Click above for high-res image gallery

The 2010 Geneva Motor Show is just days away, and the list of vehicle debuts is seemingly never ending. Last week Techart announced that they would be bringing their modified 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo, and today the German tuner previewed two more new cars that will debut at the show.

The first is an all-new version of the GTStreet R model. Based on the 2010 911 Turbo, the GTStreet R is about serious performance. The 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six produces 660 horsepower and 635 pound-feet of torque, and Techart claims a 0-100 km/h time of 3.5 seconds as well as a top speed of 214 mph. Providing the looks to go with the power is an aggressive aerodynamic kit that includes an adjustable rear spoiler and carbon fiber rear diffuser and front splitter.

The second vehicle is the Concept One, a design study based around the Porsche Panamera. Unlike the GTStreet R, the Concept One is less about go (although it does have a 550 horsepower twin-turbo V8) and more about go. The exterior features a full body kit as well as 22-inch forged wheels. The inside is upholstered in a striking white and cocoa leather complimented by phosphor green stitching. Even Techart calls it "unusual personalization." You can check out both cars in the high-res galleries below and get more info after the jump.

The Geneva Motor Show is just a few short weeks away, and the list of international debuts is quickly growing. We can now add one more to the list, with the announcement from Techart that the tuner will be unveiling their personalization program for the new Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo S.

The upgrades for the 911 Turbo start with two separate aerodynamic kits that both reduce lift and improve airflow around the coupe Techart is also offering a selection of forged wheels, available in up to 20 inch sizes, as well as a hydraulic system that can lift the nose of the car 60mm. Finally, a variety of interior components are available a three-spoke steering wheel, aluminum pedals or a complete makeover with all-new leather. Hit the jump for the official details from Techart, and be sure to check back next month for live photos from Geneva.

2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S - Click above for high-res image gallery

The wunderkinds in Wiessach have wrought a new head of the family in the form of the 2011 911 Turbo S, the first 911 S model in five years and the first for the 997. In Porsche parlance, the S suffix generally means more power and better handling, and this car appears ready to live up to the badge.

As we surmised last August, the twin-turbo flat-six is boosted to 530 horsepower, though it sips fuel at the same rate as the "base" Turbo's with its 500-horsepower engine. All that power and 516 pound-feet of torque are transferred to all four wheels - now 19 inches in diameter with center locking nuts - through Porsche's seven-speed PDK dual clutch gearbox, and a torque vectoring system helps point the car directly where the driver wants it. 0-62 miles per hour should arrive in 3.3 seconds and top speed is pegged at 196 mph. For comparison's sake, the almighty 911 GT2 makes the same amount of horsepower (530), is slower to 62 mph at 3.7 seconds, but beats the new 911 S at the top end with a 204-mph terminal velocity.

Both fixed and folding roof versions of the Turbo S will officially debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month and go on sale in Europe in May. The coupe will cost €173,241 including 19 percent VAT (the actual base price is €145,400), while the Cabriolet goes €184,546, also including the 19 percent VAT (base price €154,900). U.S. market models should follow soon after.

Go to any major city worldwide and you're likely to see a Porsche 911 roll by. It's far more common than seeing one making the cornstalks blur in the middle of farm country, anyway. Porsche CEO Michael Macht disagrees that his sports cars frequent metro areas. "They're not driven in the city," Macht told the UK's Autocar when discussing hybrid 987s and 997s. Of course, city driving is where hybrid powertrains rack up fuel economy credits, which Macht acknowledges before dismissing by saying, "It's technically possible but it's not part of the plan."

Despite the verbot on hybrid 911s, Boxsters and Caymans, technology will be thrown at the sports cars to improve efficiency. "We want brake regeneration and stop-start for our sports cars, but not hybrid," explains Macht. Just because there's no hybrids other than the Cayenne doesn't mean Porsche isn't playing with electrons. "There are some efforts to make a pure electric supercar," Macht notes, though such a vehicle would have to be capable of running as hard for as long as the petro-fueled Porsche cars - no 30-mile ranges here.

There aren't too many places you can cruise at over 200 mph in relative safety, but the Papenburg test track is one of them. The high speed oval located in Northern Germany is a pavement playground for supercars in search of straight line speed, and various manufacturers and tuners regularly use the track to see just how fast their projects can go.

Take, for instance, 9ff. The Porsche super-tuner previously used Papenburg to reach v-max in its GT9 supercar, and they recently brought out a modified 911 Turbo dubbed the TR 1000 for a high speed romp. While not quite as fast as the GT9 (409 km/h), the TR 1000 still reached an impressive 391.7 km/h -- just over 243 mph. Fortunately the cameras were rolling, giving us an opportunity to see just how quickly a 1000 horsepower Porsche can triple the legal speed limit. You can watch it for yourself after the jump.

When the Porsche 997 Turbo first came out and it was discovered that you could get from 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds in the Tiptronic automatic transmission (which was quicker than the manual gearbox), that was incredible enough. In the updated 997 Turbo with PDK, however, you can apparently get to 100 mph in less than eight seconds with just three fingers on the wheel and a bottle of Coke at your lips.

Things coming out of Stuttgart are no longer incredible, they're outrageous. Follow the jump to watch Chris Harris do a bit of drinking and driving.

These are our favorite kinds of car videos. Take a few super hot, fire-breathing, track-ready road cars and pit them against one another on a race track and see who wins. Autocar magazine's Steve Sutcliffe assembled the Nissan GT-R, the Porsche 911 Turbo and the Audi R8 V10 at the UK's Castle Combe circuit to see which of the entry level supercars could turn in the fastest lap.

The GT-R is the low-cost track star of the bunch, with the most mass, the least power and, arguably the most grip of the group. The 911 Turbo is the featherweight of the entry supercar trio, with middle-of-the-pack power and an (apparently) adventurous ride. The R8 V10 has the most power and Audi's excellent Quattro all-wheel drive system.

Sutcliffe took all through road warriors through the paces at Castle Combe, and the dynamic trio finished within about one second of each other. One of them could have won if it weren't for some iffy brakes, another didn't quite have the grip to win the day while the winner was quickest in and out of turns. Who won? You'll have to hit the jump and watch the high-res footage to find out.

Gallery: 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro

Gallery: First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R

Gallery: First Drive: 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo

[Source: Autocar via YouTube]
Continue reading VIDEO: Autocar pits Nissan GT-R vs. Porsche 911 Turbo and Audi R8 V10 on Castle Combe

VIDEO: Autocar pits Nissan GT-R vs. Porsche 911 Turbo and Audi R8 V10 on Castle Combe originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 10 Dec 2009 19:58:00 EST.
As we discovered earlier this month, the 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo is one heck of a fast car. The quickest Porsche has ever produced, in fact. So it would take considerable moxie to try and improve on it. Fortunately, 9ff has such moxie, as demonstrated with the company's new Speed9.

We brought you initial info on the Speedster-inspired tuner car a few days ago, but 9ff has been kind enough to grace us with a few more details on its latest endeavor. Set to be unveiled this coming weekend at the Essen Motor Show - Germany's equivalent of SEMA - the 9ff Speed9 starts with the new 911 Turbo cabrio and updates with a series of performance and body mods to take it to the next level.

Improving on the 997.5's 3.8-liter direct injection twin-turbo boxer six, the 9ff pumps output up from 500 horsepower up to 650 ponies with a simple upgrade to the ECU and new air filter, exhaust and catalytic converter. The result? Try 0-100 km/h (62mph) in 3.3 seconds en route to a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph) - limited only by the speedster's slick open body-style. But those sleek looks and extra oomph will cost you: 239,000 euros - the equivalent of $360,000 in American greenbacks. That's two-and-a-half times the price of a stock 911 turbo cab, but if cost is no object, the Speed9 could be just your ticket.
