<br />
It seems that we'll be getting a new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/model/jetta">Jetta</a> sedan next June, and it apparently won't be a slightly restyled Golf with a trunk grafted to the rear end. According to <em>Car and Driver</em>, VW's so-called <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/31/spy-shots-2011-vw-jetta-sedan/">New Compact Sedan</a>, which will be <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/22/report-vw-chooses-mexican-plant-for-new-compact-sedan/">built at the same Mexican plant</a> that assembles the current Jetta, will indeed retain the Jetta nameplate.<br />
<br />
Following its June debut here in the States, <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/make/volkswagen">Volkswagen</a> will prep the car for its European launch later in the year, and it may or may not be called Jetta overseas. A sportier GLI variant will continue to be offered on the new model. Looking farther down the model-range totem pole, there's a decent chance that VW will bring the Polo to the U.S. market to rival the new Ford Fiesta, possibly as both a sedan and a hatchback.<br />
<br />
Lastly, we're told that we should expect to see a new U.S.market-tailored two-door notchback coupe concept on the show circuit in short order. If public reaction to it is positive, there's a good chance VW will greenlight the car for series production.<br />

<br />
A few months ago, we found ourselves aimlessly and fortuitously wandering around the nether regions of a Los Angeles based press fleet's deep storage unit. Total "no cameras" zone. We stumbled in deeper and deeper, past the A8s used for <em>Transporter 3</em>, past the bright pink Mattel Barbie VW Routan and matching pink Barbie New Beetle Convertible with a motorized make-up valise that emerges from the trunk. Suddenly, lo and behold, there's a red 2009 <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/VolkswagenPolo/">Volkswagen Polo</a> in all its Euro-only glory. Can we drive it? No. Please? No. Come on, man - just a quick drive? No, also - <em>no</em>.<br />
<br />
So why is a Volkswagen Polo socked away in the very back of a warehouse? For a commercial, man. And it's actually a pretty nifty commercial, reminiscent of the town square scenes in <em>Back to the Future</em>. They even use the same Universal Studios back lot to film the new Polo spot. However, instead Marty McFly leading Biff and the baddies into the back of a manure truck, the commercial transitions to a <em>Grease</em>-like drag race between the Polo and some sort of chopped '50s zeitgeist flame job convertible - we'll go with custom Buick Roadmaster (or... 1953 Packard). Anyhow, we're not going to spoil the ending, beyond letting you know that the Polo wins. <div align="center"><small> <em><strong>Volkswagen Phaeton - Click above for high-res image gallery</strong></em></small><br /></div>
<br />At least as far back as March 2007, we were <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/11/one-more-time-vw-phaeton-returning-to-u-s/">reporting</a> that Volkswagen might bring back their range-topping and bank-draining Phaeton sedan to the States. Back then, it was the company's CEO Martin Winterkorn predicting the car's return to America, but in more recent times, we haven't heard much news about the luxury liner. Then <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/18/spy-shots-facelifted-2011-volkswagen-phaeton-caught-in-germany/">spyshots</a> of a re-designed 2011 Phaeton emerged in June of this year, but we speculated there was zero chance of the much-maligned model being sold here.<br /><br />Of course, Stefan Jacoby, president and CEO of Volkswagen of America had to prove us wrong by telling <em>The Detroit News</em> that yes, there will again be Phaetons sold on American VW dealers' lots. He doesn't get specific about when the luxury sedan will return (or even if it will be anything like the model American consumers already shunned), but he does say it will indeed be the range's high-end flagship once again.<br /><br />Jacoby also lays out the brand's U.S. strategy to pretty much have something to offer in every category save perhaps amphibious vehicles. He admits additions to the German carmaker's U.S. lineup could include a Polo-sized car below the Jetta, a compact SUV to be produced next to a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/12/first-sketch-emerges-of-volkswagens-new-mid-size-sedan-from-ten/">new midsize sedan</a> in <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/15/volkswagen-announces-plans-for-factory-in-chattanooga-tenn/">Chattanooga</a>, which will be topped by another new midsize sedan "like the Avalon for Toyota."<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/facelifted-phaeton/low/">VW Phaeton (facelifted)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/facelifted-phaeton/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/phaeton_new_hi_07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/facelifted-phaeton/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/phaeton_new_hi_06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/facelifted-phaeton/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/phaeton_new_hi_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/facelifted-phaeton/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/phaeton_new_hi_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/facelifted-phaeton/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2007/03/phaeton_new_hi_08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.detnews.com/article/20090813/AUTO01/908130404/1148/U.S.+Volkswagen+chief+Stefan+Jacoby+talks+strategy">The Detroit News</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/report-vw-ceo-confirms-phaeton-will-return-to-america-doesnt/">REPORT: VW CEO confirms Phaeton will return to America, doesn't say when</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 10:31:00 EST. In Europe such a car would go against competition like the Opel Meriva and Fiat Qubo. A VW board member suggested that such a car would be about adding to the company's small car variety, and it wants to have the right mix of offerings when the recovery comes. <br /><br />On a side note, VW is also planning a "less effeminate, more assertive and masculine" Beetle that they want more men to buy. Because who knew button-cute car with a flower vase holder wouldn't appeal to men?<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo/low/">2010 Volkswagen Polo</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/db2009au00239_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/db2009au00240_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/db2009au00241_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/db2009au00242_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/db2009au00243_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle.ASpx?AR=240352">Autocar</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/28/report-vw-planning-polo-based-mini-mpv/">REPORT: VW planning Polo-based mini MPV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 28 May 2009 08:58:00 EST. <br />Audi's not alone in bringing a customized production ride to the 2009 W&ouml;rthersee meet. Volkswagon's one-upping the interlocking rings by bringing two production-based concept cars: special W&ouml;rthersee '09 versions of the new VW GTI and Polo. The GTI's bodywork is finished in a dark Firespark Red color, offset with black wheels and exterior accents. The red is also used for the GTI's grille trim and to dress up the rims on its black 19-spoke alloys. Nappa leather trims the seats, with red contrast panels and white piping adding some more visual pop.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo-worthersee-09-concept/2025068/"><img hspace="4" height="199" border="1" align="right" width="300" vspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/vwwortherseepolo_lo.jpg" alt="VW Polo Wirthersee '09 Concept" /></a>The VW Polo W&ouml;rthersee '09 concept (shown at right) looks like the GTI concept's kid brother, and likely hints at the next-gen Polo GTI's appearance. Finished in Flash Red paint with black rally stripes, the Polo concept sports black 18-inch wheels with polished spokes sit at the corners, while inside, you'll find more Nappa leather appointments. Black surfaces are accented with white contrast panels and red accent stitching. <br /><br />Both cars get sport exhaust systems and the obligatory commemorative doorsill plates, natch. Will the crush of fanboys rolling into the W&ouml;rthersee Tour approve of the two show cars? We'd place our bets on "yes."<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-gti-worthersee-09-concept/low/">Volkswagen GTI Worthersee '09 Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-gti-worthersee-09-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/vwworthersee09_hi_001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-gti-worthersee-09-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/vwworthersee09_hi_002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-gti-worthersee-09-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/vwworthersee09_hi_003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-gti-worthersee-09-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/vwworthersee09_hi_004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo-worthersee-09-concept/low/">Volkswagen Polo Worthersee '09 Concept</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo-worthersee-09-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/vwworthersee09_hi_005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo-worthersee-09-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/vwworthersee09_hi_006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo-worthersee-09-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/vwworthersee09_hi_007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo-worthersee-09-concept/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/05/vwworthersee09_hi_008_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/20/seeing-red-vw-unveils-gti-and-polo-worthersee-09-concepts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Seeing Red: VW unveils GTI and Polo Wörthersee '09 concepts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/20/seeing-red-vw-unveils-gti-and-polo-worthersee-09-concepts/">Seeing Red: VW unveils GTI and Polo Wörthersee '09 concepts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Wed, 20 May 2009 11:27:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>2010 Volkswagen Polo: Click above for a high res-gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />The new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/03/geneva-2009-2010-volkswagen-polo/">Volkswagen Polo</a> is all-new for 2010, and early returns show plenty of interest in the little European hatchback. VW is reporting 13,000 pre-orders for the B-segment five-door; news that is sure to have executives at the German automaker doing their best <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/first-drive-2010-mazda3/1488439/">Mazda3 impression</a>. The Polo has been in production since March, but it won't officially hit showroom floors until June. <br /><br />The brisk interest in the handsome little Polo is doubtlessly partly attributable to the German government's "cash-for-clunkers" bill which provides <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/24/germany-may-extend-successful-scrapping-program/">&euro;2,500 to scrap old cars</a> ($3,400 USD) in favor of a new model. The legislation has prompted German car buyers to pick up new cars at a brisk pace. In Europe, the compact Polo will receive powertrains that can produce between 59 and 103 hp, with a BlueMotion diesel that's capable of 61.9 mpg (US).<br /><br />The U.S. is reportedly likely to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/16/report-volkswagen-to-sell-two-versions-of-polo-in-u-s-in-2011/">receive two versions of the Polo</a> within the next two years. If the models come through, both models will likely receive the automaker's new 1.2-liter TSI gas engine. Direct injection and turbocharging help the little four-banger reach 103 hp and 42.8 mpg (U.S.) combined.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo-3/low/">2010 Volkswagen Polo</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/01-2010-vw-polo-concept_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/02-2010-vw-polo-concept_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/03-2010-vw-polo-concept_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/04-2010-vw-polo-concept_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo-3/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/05-2010-vw-polo-concept_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20090511/ANE02/305119874/1018">Automotive News</a> (subs req'd)]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/12/report-vw-logs-13-000-orders-for-new-polo-ahead-of-launch/">REPORT: VW logs 13,000 orders for new Polo ahead of launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 12 May 2009 14:00:00 EST. So when the circus rolls into town, you can bet Germany's giant auto industry will embrace the opportunity to reveal their latest. Audi's tipped to unveil its <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/A5Sportback/">A5 Sportback</a> and revised <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/A8/">A8</a>, Mercedes is expected to unveil its new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/EClassCabrio/">E-Class Cabrio</a>, BMW the new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/X1/">X1</a> and <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/5SeriesGT/">5-Series GT</a>/Progressive Activity Sedan... even Opel is anticipated to unveil its new <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Astra/">Astra</a> in Frankfurt. But according to the latest reports, Volkswagen is preparing to upstage them all with four new models.<br /><br />First up is the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/Robust/">Robust</a> pick-up truck <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/21/spy-shots-volkswagen-pickup-prototype-runs-the-ring/">recently spied</a> undergoing testing at the Nurburgring. A more versatile version of VW's midsize hatchback called the Golf Variant is tipped to join the show stage, too. But the real excitement is in the pair of hot hatches set to make their debuts in Frankfurt. The <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/07/vw-planning-new-golf-gti-and-r-variant/">Golf R</a> is anticipated to pack a 265-hp 2.0-liter TFSI with all the trimmings, while a mini-Scirocco based on the Polo could also be in the cards, packing a 180-hp 1.4-liter four. Of course, it's entirely possible that one or more of these could drop off the card for the upcoming show in September, but either way, Volkswagen looks set to make a big splash in Frankfurt this year, and of course we'll be on hand to catch it all for you.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autoweek.nl/autonieuws/11659/Volkswagen-primeurs-voor-Frankfurt">AutoWeek.nl</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/11/volkswagen-to-debut-four-new-models-in-frankfurt/">Volkswagen to debut four new models in Frankfurt?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 11 May 2009 18:29:00 EST. Although the design has not yet been made public, Jacoby notes that the car was finalized over the last few weeks in Wolfsburg, and a rendering of the car (above) <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/12/first-sketch-emerges-of-volkswagens-new-mid-size-sedan-from-ten/">leaked out in February</a>.<br /><br />What else will be made in VW's new Tennessee plant? At the moment, there have been no firm decisions, but up for consideration, says Jacoby, are a compact SUV, a mid-size SUV, or something from "the Polo family."<br /><br />About the latter - Jacoby says they have polled the company's dealership body in the States, and their response has been that the vehicle is not large enough to succeed in America. That said, VW appears to be considering a next-generation Polo sedan and/or a larger hatchback. While stopping short of confirming a model, VW's CEO did sound quite positive about the chances for a Polo when he said: "We are investigating what model we should start with and when we should start -- in 2011 or 2012."<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20090427/ANA03/304279989/1178">Automotive News</a> - subs. req.]<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/04/27/report-new-vw-mid-size-sedan-to-start-at-20-000-arrive-in-201/">REPORT: New VW mid-size sedan to start at $20,000, arrive in 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 27 Apr 2009 11:29:00 EST. <div align="center"><em><strong><small>2010 Volkswagen Polo - Click above for a high-res gallery</small></strong></em><br /></div>
<br />Volkswagen has every intention of selling its compact Polo in the States, but we won't be getting the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/03/geneva-2009-2010-volkswagen-polo/">2010 model</a> that debut at last month's <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/GenevaMotorShow/">Geneva Motor Show</a>. Volkswagen of America CEO, Stefan Jacoby, says the fifth-generation Polo is still too small for the American market, so instead, VW is developing two versions for the U.S. - a small sedan and a five-door version - each featuring a longer wheelbase and a slightly taller roofline.<br /><br />The sedan variant will be smaller than the current Jetta, while the four-door wagon will take aim at the Honda Fit. According to Jacoby, "It's more like a cross between a compact minivan and a hatchback." Sounds like a Fit competitor to us.<br /><br />Pricing is still a long way off, but Jacoby admitted that the "sweet spot" is somewhere between $13,000 and $15,000. If VW wants to hit that price point, the U.S.-market Polo will need to be built in North America, likely at V-Dub's factory in Puebla, Mexico. Expect the Polo to hit the States in 2011, equipped with a variation of the 1.2-liter inline four due to go on sale in Europe this June.<br /><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo/low/">2010 Volkswagen Polo</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/db2009au00239_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/db2009au00240_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/db2009au00241_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/db2009au00242_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2010-volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/03/db2009au00243_medium_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20090316/ANA03/903160334/-1">Automotive News</a> - Sub. <br />According to <em>Automotive News</em>, Volkswagen has determined that Americans might like a Polo, so it's bringing the 80-hp subcompact Stateside in the not-too-distant future. Until now, the importation of the Polo was all <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/15/coming-to-america-vw-polo-may-come-stateside/">conjecture</a>, but now we have confirmation, straight from the horse's mouth. No specifics were given about the diminutive hatchback's U.S. debut, but Volkswagen Group of America CEO Stefan Jacoby confirmed they think the time is right. The automaker feels that Americans are more open to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles following the summer of high gas prices and the struggling economy.<br /><br />The car, which would slot in between the Toyota Yaris and the larger Honda Fit in size, could be built at the company's plant in Puebla, Mexico. Although they've never sold anything smaller than the Rabbit/Golf in the States, VW thinks the Polo could help them reach their goal of tripling U.S. sales over the next ten years. The latest genereation of the Polo is set to debut at the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/tag/GenevaMotorShow/">Geneva Motor Show</a> in March, but it's unclear if we will be getting that model or its predecessor. We just hope the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/01/more-of-the-same-volkswagen-polo-gti-rumormill-swirls/">Polo GTI</a> version is in the cards.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo/low/">Volkswagen Polo</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/vwpolo_hi003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/vwpolo_hi004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/vwpolo_hi005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/vwpolo_hi006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/vwpolo_hi007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autonews.com/article/20090116/COPY01/301169905/1176">Automotive News</a> - Sub. But V-Dub wants something better for the U.S. market. Speaking with Bloomberg, VW CEO, Stefan Jacoby revealed that the automaker is considering bringing a subcompact vehicle, similar to the Polo, to the U.S.<br /><br />With the Toyota Yaris rated at 32 mpg and the Honda Fit coming in at 31 mpg (combined city/highway), Volkswagen is hoping to meet or exceed the competition. While it's unlikely we'll see the current Polo on U.S. shores anytime soon, it's expected that the next generation will be available in the States in 2010 when the new Jetta is released, followed by a new midsize sedan that will replace the Passat.<br /><br />The additions and revisions to VW's product line is an effort by the automaker to boost U.S. sales to 800,000 units by 2018, nearly tripling the 230,571 vehicles it sold in 2007. VW is also looking to build a new engine plant in Mexico, along with its recently announced Tennessee plant.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601100&amp;sid=abtsJmYB7wK4&amp;refer=germany">Bloomberg</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/18/volkswagen-considering-offering-polo-in-u-s-market/">Volkswagen considering offering Polo in U.S. market</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 18 Jul 2008 15:33:00 EST. According to <em>AutoExpress</em>, the first model to benefit from Walter Da'Silva's new dictum is the 5th generation Polo, which is expected to go on sale sometime next year sporting a new front end inspired by the recently released Scirocco.<br /><br />The new model is based off the PQ25 small car platform that currently underpins the SEAT Ibiza. As such, the dimensions will remain, but the interior will be larger and will include upmarket materials, soft-touch surfaces, a Scirocco-inspired dash, MP3 inputs, Bluetooth connectivity and the possibility of a sat-nav docking station that allows portable units to be removed on the go.<br /><br />A range of gasoline and diesel mills, including 1.4- and 1.6-liter FSI fours, a supercharged, 138 hp 1.4-liter and a 168 hp GTI version, will provide motivation and all models will have the option of being fitted with VW's new seven-speed DSG. Expect three- and five-door models to be released at launch and then joined by a coupe-cabrio version sometime in 2010.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/224316/volkswagen_polo.html">AutoExpress</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/01/next-volkswagen-polo-could-get-the-scirocco-treatment/">Next Volkswagen Polo could get the Scirocco treatment</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 01 Jul 2008 13:02:00 EST. Space concept</em><br /><br />Volkswagen may be serious about returning to its "people's car" roots by importing a small vehicle to the U.S. with a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine. Stefan Jacoby, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, told <em>Automotive News</em> that something like the Polo could fly here in the States, as well as "lifestyle" vehicles like the smart and MINI, and something he described as a "little bit <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/29/vw-up-van-could-come-to-u-s-because-were-fat/">SUV-looking and a little van</a>."<br /><br />The inclusion of a new, economical model into Volkswagen's lineup could be based around the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/11/frankfurt-2007-vw-gets-it-up/">up! concepts</a> that have made appearances on the auto show circuit this past year, and Jacoby hopes that pricing could be set in the $13,000 to $14,000 realm. The move is in an effort to capitalize on American's supposed desire for more fuel-efficient models that won't break the bank and cause less cringing at the pumps. However, despite Jacoby's comments about small vehicles, VW is still contemplating a <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/02/04/volkswagen-phaeton-coming-i-back-i-to-america/">return of the Phaeton to the U.S.</a> - something that's directly opposed to its desire of become a more affordable marque for the masses.<br /><br />[Source: Automotive News - Sub. That's going to be Volkswagen chief Martin Winterkorn's query to US dealers when he meets with them this week. The answer could determine whether or not we see a sub-Golf sized VeeDub here in the United States. Rising fuel prices have made small cars big again, and VW's taking a hard look at capitalizing on that. The inrush of Volkswagen's competitors to smaller models also makes the segment hard to ignore. BMW's got the hotly anticipated 1-series, Daimler's trend-tastic Smart has been foisted upon us, Saturn's slick Astra is nearly here, and Ford's threatening to give us the Fiesta in a couple of years, too. If we were a VW dealer, our answer to Winterkorn would be a resounding "YES!" <br /><br />[Source: Auto News - sub req]<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo/low/">Volkswagen Polo</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/vwpolo_hi003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/vwpolo_hi004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/vwpolo_hi005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/vwpolo_hi006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/volkswagen-polo/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/01/vwpolo_hi007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/15/coming-to-america-vw-polo-may-come-stateside/">Coming to America: VW Polo may come stateside</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 15 Jan 2008 18:29:00 EST. VW has been a big player in China since way before it was cool, and now Mr. Winterkorn and co. are focusing their attention on the booming India market. VW is planning on producing 240,000 vehicles per year in India by 2012, and it's using two small cars to supply much of the volume. The size and price of the Polo compact and the upcoming <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/29/vw-up-van-could-come-to-u-s-because-were-fat/#comments">Up!</a> minicar are perfect for the India market, and Europe's largest automaker plans on building both vehicles at its new plant in Chakan. Up! will go head to head with its low-cost Indian market competition with a price tag in the $7,500 price range. <br /><br />The Passat has already been on sale in India since November, the next generation Jetta and the ultra-luxury <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/23/vw-phaeton-take-2-lets-try-smaller-this-time-with-a-bit-more/">Phaeton</a> are scheduled to hit India's VW dealerships in the next couple years. With VW's vast expertise making and selling its cars in low-cost markets, the company that created the original Beetle has a great chance to make hay in the land of Gandhi and the Taj Mahal.<br /><br />[Source: Inside Line]<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/12/09/volkswagen-to-build-up-in-india/">Volkswagen to build Up! in India</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 09 Dec 2007 19:02:00 EST. Daimler Benz is in the final stages of launching the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/06/smart-prices-fortwo-at-12k-coming-in-january/">Smart fortwo</a> city car here in the US, and Volkswagen is looking at entering the fray with their own mini compact, the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/09/10/frankfurt-2007-volkswagen-reveals-rear-engined-concept/">Up!</a>. The stylish Up! was unveiled in Frankfurt on Monday, and Adrian Hallmark, head of Volkswagen of America, has already informed Wolfsburg that the US market is interested. <br /><br />It's hard to gauge how the fortwo will do here in the States due to its freakishly small size and seating for only two, but the VW Up! concept has a rear-engine, rear drive configuration with room for four. A sedan with roughly the same amount of interior space as a previous generation Golf will likely be available for US consumers if the vehicle goes to production in the next few years. We just hope VW can achieve incredible fuel economy with the good looks of the concept, while offering the Up! at the low prices that once made the original Beetle such a smash hit. <br /><br />[Source: Automotive News - Sub. In the US, those virtues alone don't make a high volume automaker, as price tends to play a major role in buyer's decisions. Due to the strength of the Euro, VW has much higher fixed costs than its competitors, even when production in Mexico is taken into account. As a result of their large financial burden, Volkswagens usually cost more than most of the competition. To strengthen their competitive position and leverage cheap labor in developing countries, VW is planning on producing vehicles in China for the US market. <br /><br />VW, along with partner SECI Motors, is a juggernaut in the land of the Great Wall, as the Germans automaker has been entrenched in China since 1984. The SECI/VW partnership will replace the Chinese market Passat Lingyu with a sedan that will also be sold on our shores. Many automakers have utilized China's inexpensive labor for cheaper parts, but as of yet, no US-sold vehicles have been assembled there. If VW can make cars in China that can meet US safety and emissions standards, Europe's only volume automaker with a presence in the US will go a long way towards closing the cost gap.<br /><br />[Source: Auto News (subscription req'd)]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/07/19/u-s-or-bust-volkswagen-china-developing-car-for-north-america/">U.S. or Bust: Volkswagen China developing car for North America</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Thu, 19 Jul 2007 11:26:00 EST. The automaker is targeting sales of 200,000 units per year from the home of Ivan the Terrible by 2009 or 2010, up from about 50,000 this year. VW has has put its money where its plans are, too, with a new plant in Kaluga, which sits between Moscow and St. Petersburg. The folks in charge of marketing over at Volkswagen decided that they needed some hands-on advertising to push their little Polo, so they came up with large magnets that look like car dents to put on other people's cars. The idea is to show how tough the little Polo is. <br /><br />Most of us get pissed off when we see a flyer for cheap oil changes on our windshield, so we can't imagine being too thrilled about someone slapping a magnet on our paint job. Call us crazy, but we probably wouldn't appreciate the adrenaline rush that comes with "Holy crap what happened to my ca... oh, it's just a magnet." Somehow we don't think that scaring the heck out of a car owner will entice him or her to drop $15k on a VW.<br /><br />Besides, what message does this bone-headed marketing campaign really send for the Polo? Is it: "Polo: the steering is so bad, you'll have little control when you try to park." Or could it be: "Polo: the car everybody else will hate because it reminds them of the stupid magnet that got stuck on their car." We like the idea of a small, affordable, fuel-efficient VW, but we'd prefer people not touching our cars or sticking things to them, for that matter.<br /><br />[Source: VW via <a href="http://www.germancarblog.com/2007/04/vw-polo-great-ad-idea-magnetic-crash.html">The German Car Blog</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/17/step-away-from-the-car-vw-polo-magnetic-dent-promotion/">Step away from the car: VW Polo magnetic dent promotion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 17 Apr 2007 13:02:00 EST.
