GM UK Special Vehicles has just introduced its take-no-prisoners Police-specification Vauxhall Insignia. Available to police fleets throughout the UK, the car is available in sedan or Sports Tourer body styles (shown above). Powertrain choices include a 220 PS (216 hp) 2.0-liter turbo or a 260 PS (256 hp) 2.8-liter with all-wheel drive. A 160 PS (157 hp) diesel 2.0-liter is also available.

In addition to the flashy graphics, the Special Vehicles division is offering Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) cameras, the Automatic Numberplate Recognition (ANPR) system, a roof light bar with 360-degree blues, side alley lamps, full communication equipment and, of course, sirens. Covering all of the bases, the special Vauxhall division is also able to supply vehicles for high-speed paramedic delivery and fire brigade support. Press release after the jump.

Gallery: 2009 Vauxhall Insignia Police Package

[Source: General Motors]
Continue reading Vauxhall unveils new police package Insignia

Vauxhall unveils new police package Insignia originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 15 May 2009 09:27:00 EST.
Demonstrating that good cop cars can also go bad, Chrysler has announced a recall of Dodge Chargers and Magnums equipped with the police package and column shifter. While the cars aren't exactly taking sides with the villainous, they are having difficulty displaying the proper transmission gearshift position on the dash. This error is leading to more than a few headaches for men and women in uniform, and can be downright dangerous if they're not in the gear they think they are. The recalled cruisers are 2006-2009 models, and they number more than 20,000 strong (including the 150 sold to Kuwait). Dealers will reportedly add a locking mechanism to the gearshift cable to keep the displays honest.

Granted, many of the features that make it a good police truck are part of what make the new GMT900 SUVs good vehicles anyway, but it still features its share of specific elements for the boys in blue.

They include a lowered, stiffened suspension, an upfit-ready electrical system, high-capacity radiator, oil cooler, heavy duty brakes with ABS, a skid plate package, tire pressure monitoring system, long-life spark plugs, and an upgraded battery (or two). Power comes from the E85-capable 5.3L Vortec V8 with 320 horsepower. The Tahoe's substantial size also enables officers to haul a lot of stuff inside.

We get excited about police cars. Maybe it's the painted steel wheels, aggressive rubber, and lowered stance -- we're not sure. Whatever it is, it brings out the kid in us, though, and we dig the looks of the new Tahoe as trimmed out for the fuzz.

It's something we're more than content to enjoy from a distance, though. We like police cars less when they're right in our rearview mirrors, and under no circumstances do we want to be invited for a ride in the back seat...

(Rear view, full press release after the jump)

[Source: GM]
Continue reading Chevy's arresting 2007 Police Tahoe

Chevy's arresting 2007 Police Tahoe originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 06 Dec 2006 09:36:00 EST.
