In Switzerland, twin brothers have the blame game down to a science, as they've successfully talked their way out of 29 parking tickets by refusing to pay the fine because "the other one did it." Since the twins are identical and they are co-owners of one car, Swiss officials have no concrete way to identify the offender. Without being able to identify anyone, officials feel there is no way they can hand out a ticket.

The fact that law enforcement cannot nail this dynamic duo for a simple parking infraction is maddening. And short of staking out the car, grabbing the suspect and finger printing them, these two parking bad boys will never have to pay a fine. Hat tip to Brady.

[Source: Ananova]
How do you get out of those pesky parking tickets?
To their credit, the police in Slovakia evidently make no exceptions for €1.1 million supercars. There are supposedly two Bugatti Veyrons registered in the European country, and this one is said to belong to Ladislav Basternak.

When Basternak;s Veyron was parked a little too long at the Hviezdoslavovo Square in Bratislava, the Slovak police slapped a boot on the Bug's oh-so-costly 12-spoke wheels. We're guessing that more than one ticket resulted in the boot, but who knows? Either way, that would make this scene a little worse than the ticketed Veyron in London, but not quite as bad as the Bugatti driver who ran out of gas in Las Vegas. Thanks for the tip, Shadow!

Gallery: Booted Bugatti

[Source: Natankuj (translated)]
Booted Bugatti Veyron proof that nobody is safe from the recession originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 13 Apr 2009 19:59:00 EST. It goes something like this: You walk out of a store and notice a yellow ticket on the windshield of your car. It's apparently a parking violation, and it directs you to a specific website. Once at the website, there are in fact photos of cars from your area that are supposedly illegally parked along with instructions to download a tool that will show you your own vehicle and explain why you were ticketed. You click to download. Presto. You've been struck by... a smooth criminal. That download is actually a Trojan horse virus.

This new tactic, though certainly creative, is an alarming reminder that unscrupulous individuals will always try and find new ways to trick their victims. Experts warn that attacks combining "physical and virtual worlds via objects that point to websites" could become a much more common tactic in the coming years. Thanks for the tip, NetAddict!

[Source: BBC]
Fake parking tickets lead to computer virus originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 06 Feb 2009 11:27:00 EST. Mr. Shah, a personal trainer living in West London, had illegally parked his E39 5-Series due to a misinterpretation of the parking signs near his home. The reason for the infraction was no matter to tow truck operators, who started winching the BMW up on a flatbed in order to cart the offending vehicle off to the pound. Thinking fast, Shah hopped on the truck and snuck into his vehicle's back seat, pretending to have been sleeping in the car the whole time. Rather than pay the £250 fine, Shah refused to leave the car, and instead listened to music and ordered a sandwich from a local cafe. After a couple of hours, the standoff eventually stymied both the owner of the tow company and the police, ultimately ending in the release of the vehicle. Shah may have dodged a bullet this time, even though he's on the hook for a £60 parking ticket, but the fickle finger of fate may yet to deal his payback.

[Source: Daily Mail, Photo by Scuddr | CC 2.0]

Man avoids parking ticket by refusing to get out of car originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 23 Sep 2008 13:26:00 EST. In which camp would you think England falls? We'd have hoped the former, but the crowd has spoken, and they're saying otherwise. When an evidently obscenely wealthy driver parked his Bugatti Veyron in a loading bay in downtown Manchester, a traffic warden wrote him a ticket while a gathering crowd stood by and cheered her on.

The same car was reported to have gotten another ticket in the posh Cheshire neighborhood of Alderley Edge, as well. The ?60 ticket this time, which can be reduced to ?30 if paid promptly, will probably not make or break the driver of the seven-figure hyper-exotic, but he should really be more careful about where he leaves his Veyron lying around.

Thanks for the tip, Sparky!

But they aren't parking violations, they're <strike>shame</strike> awareness tickets from an environmental group chiding owners for driving resource-hungry vehicles in cities like London. Advocates say they're warning consumers of the genre's potential effect on future generations, as well as those in the present (read: safety issues).

While hardly at the same level of popularity as their U.S. counterparts, UK SUV ownership has skyrocketed in excess of 40 percent in the last half-decade - this, despite increasingly stiff tax hikes that target the vehicles.

The tactic is hardly new, having been reported around the U.S. for some time, in articles like this August, 2002 New York Times piece.

What do you think about guerilla awareness campaigns like this? Have you ever been on the giving or receiving end of a fake ticket?
