Well, it's "free" in the sense that the vehicle's specifications, technical drawings and the like are available to anyone who wants them. It's called the c,mm,n (common), and is the first fruit of the OScar project. OScar was the brainchild of the Netherlands Society for Nature and Environment and the universities at Eindhoven, Enschede, and Delft. We first told you about this project a year ago and now have the first working model to show you. This true Open Source car was designed by an online community over the past eight years. The goal was to produce a simple, sturdy, easily-maintained, multi-functional, modular vehicle that was truly international.

The c,mm,n is intended to be a green family vehicle that can and should be adapted to individual market needs. If you use the basic platform, the group requests that you share your modifications, too. As with many products designed by committee, the results are... well, not as clean as cars designed by a single pen. The name is almost as clumsy as the exterior, but not quite. But feel free to change the looks as much as you please, just share the upgrades with the world. On the plus side, it uses a hydrogen fuel cell for propulsion and features high-tech goodies like a 2-way interactive GPS with live traffic and parking info.

[Source: Winding Road]
The OScar Open Source car finally debuts! originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 30 Mar 2007 16:32:00 EST. Currently on the virtual block are apair of pickups, one that's an Oscar Best Picture nominee and one that's really liked by a guy named Oscar.

The first is the truck driven by Jack Twist (played by Jake Gyllenhal) in the movie Brokeback Mountain, a1950 GMC half-ton with nearly 61,000 miles. It still has its original engine that is reportedly in superb workingcondition, and its interior has been restored as per the movie. See the eBay auction here.

The second truck is a true Blue-Light Special: Larry the Cable Guy's 1977 Chevy half-ton, as seen in themovie Health Inspector. Unfortunately, this hauler isn't in as good a shape as Mr. Gyllenhal's truck.Actually, it's not even street legal and wears its salvage title as a badge of honor. However, proceeds of this auction, go to diabetesresearch.

[Source: CalgarySun and Car Buyer's Notebook]
eBay hosting pair of Tinsel Town trucks originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 27 Mar 2006 18:57:00 EST.
The slow roll to the red carpet at tonight's Academy Awards is likely to be a quiet one for many of thenight's biggest nominees. Oscar-intenders like Joaquin Phoenix and George Clooney are slated to arrive curbsidein Toyota hybrids, as part of the company's fourth annual "Red Carpet, Green Cars" marketing shtick.Given the massive amounts of traffic (vehicular and human) 'round the event, expect a near-silent processional asthe company's parade of hybrids will likely arrive in full-electric mode.

For their part, the Ford Motor Company is finally starting to get into the pre-Oscar eco-promotional sweepstakes,as Cathy Schulman (producer of Crash) will exit a Mercury Mariner Hybrid, and Jake Gyllenhaal of BrokebackMountain fame is set to roll up with his homies in a biodiesel Ford Excursion.

Wither the General? GM will forgo all the green posturing, and instead bring the bling, with a fleet of 50Cadillacs, largely 2007 Escalades.

No word on if Michael Moore will be attending, and if so, what his 'Whip du jour' will be. (Sorry 'bout the pic, wecouldn't resist)
