We figured that anything and everything automotive in Las Vegas would be over at the convention center for SEMA all week, but apparently, we were wrong. Amidst the introductions of custom cars and aftermarket parts, Shelby Automobiles introduced two new vehicles at its Las Vegas facility.

The first is the F150 Super Snake Concept. Built as a pickup version of the potent GT500 Super Snake, the truck version has similar features including a Whipple supercharger system, Borla exhaust system, 22-inch wheels and tires, six-piston brakes, custom Shelby bodywork, and Shelby embroidery inside. Even though it is labeled as a concept, Shelby is offering the package to F150 owners who can get the parts installed only at Shelby's headquarters.

The second car is a (you guessed it) Mustang that features Shelby's new turbo package that can be installed post-title on any 2005-2009 GT at any of the company's mod shops around the country. Using a Turbonetics single-turbo system, Shelby has increased the output of the Mustang's 4.6-liter V8 to by nearly double to 550 horsepower. A variety of other components come with the package as well including a short-throw shifter, Borla exhaust, Shelby grille, 18-inch wheels and more. Other items like Baer six-piston brakes, Eibach suspension system, eight-point roll cage, and the Shelby GT-H hood are optional.

Learn more about each of the cars after the jump.

2010 Ford Mustang GT - Click above for high-res image gallery

Sorry Transformers fans, but your precious Bumblebee just got his butt whooped. Color us not surprised. Because for anyone that's ever driven the Detroit Three's nouveau muscle cars (and seriously evaluated them), the 2010 Mustang GT is clearly Best of Show material. It's just too refined, too capable and let's be honest, too good. Especially when compared to the cetacean Dodge Challenger R/T. How obvious? Even Consumer Reports says so.

True, it used to be getting your sports car endorsed by Consumer Reports was kinda like Tipper Gore and Joe Lieberman banging their heads and flashing approving devil signs at your band. But somewhere about ten years back, the ad-free, subscriber-funded mag began testing cars that enthusiasts might actually want to buy. And then they began factoring in metrics like acceleration, handling and braking, while still lowering eyelids with stats on mileage and reliability (we kid, we kid).

So yeah - straight up, the 315 horsepower Ford Mustang GT got a rating of "Very Good" and 78 points, whereas the 426 hp Chevrolet Camaro SS got "Very Good" but only 71 points, whereas the 370 hp Challenger R/T received a rating of merely "Good" and just 53 points.

But wait, there's more! CR also tested the Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8, Subaru WRX and Nissan 370Z. How did the evolved-but-not-revolved 'Stang stack up? Funny you should ask. Consumer Reports' press release doesn't say. Specifically, it doesn't give numeric scores for the sporty Asian cars. However, all three non-domestics got the (apparently) coveted "Very Good" rating, meaning they all finished ahead of the Challenger. And yes, the big Dodge had the six-speed manual. Part of the Challenger's problem is no doubt this sentence: "Braking is mediocre and it has a big car feel rather than a sports car." But the real question is, which car won the competition outright? All we know is that the new issue comes out today. PR posted after the jump.

Gallery: Review: 2010 Ford Mustang GT

[Source: Consumer Reports]
Continue reading Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger better than Ford's Mustang? Consumer Reports says 'neigh'

Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger better than Ford's Mustang? Consumer Reports says 'neigh' originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 12:57:00 EST.
We're hoping there's some "there there" with this one, but here goes. Car & Driver went down to the GingerMan Raceway in South Haven, Michigan where they ran into some Ford engineers with a few pre-production 2011 Mustangs. Aside from some adjustable shocks (which C&D feels are most likely just for development), the big difference was the tires on one of the mules.

Pirelli P Zero Corsa R-compounds, to be precise, in place of the "regular" P Zeros found on 2010 Track Packers. In other words, pure supercar. In fact, those tires come stock on the Lambo LP560-4, for instance. The question then becomes, why would a Mustang need honest to goodness supercar meat? One explanation is that Ford is just playing around with different tire compounds. Another though, is much more interesting.

C&D claims that the Corsa R-compound car was lapping the 1.88 mile track just as quickly as the current BMW M3 they brought along. But how could a 315 hp car keep up on a track with a 414 hp car? Weight? Maybe, because the Mustang weighs about 200 pounds less than the M3. Don't say torque, because the Mustang only beats the M3 by 25 lb-ft there. Tires? Well maybe, but the Michelin Pilot Sport 2s on the Bimmer are pretty sticky in their own right. Despite all that, 414 horses should have cleaned up.

Well, what if the 2011 Mustang Mule with the fancy tires had a 5.0-liter, 32-valve DOHC Coyote engine kicking out 400+ hp and 400+ torques. The world's worst kept secret engine could also explain the similar lap times. Now dig this, there's also a small possibility that the white mule depicted in the article -- the one that appears to be missing a tailpipe -- isn't a V8 at all, but is instead an EcoBoosted V6 model. Did the car C&D ran into have the new 5.0-liter Ford V8 or the blown six? They didn't say. But if they saw the adjustable shocks that means they saw the hood up.

Normally, we try not to cover one story too much, especially one that is a marketing tool, but this one is just too good to pass up. We've previously told you about Roger Keeney, the man from Athens, GA that lost his sight twenty years ago and hasn't been able to drive since. As part of their 10 Unleashed program, Ford fulfilled Roger's dream to drive a new Mustang GT Convertible with Trans-Am champion Tommy Kendall, and documented the event with a series of videos.

We received a preview last month, and now Ford has released the second and third episodes showing Keeney actually getting behind the wheel. Keeney even dishes out some kindness of his own by convincing Ford to let some of his friends at the Arizona Center for the Blind drive the Mustang as well. Check out both episodes in the embedded videos after the jump.

We spent a few precious hours in the 2010 Ford Mustang GT toward the end of last year. More recently, we were able to get a Kona Blue model in the Autoblog Garage, and this time, we spent a full week exploring the car's metropolis manners in between long rounds in the saddle, throwing the car over hill and dale... and around the track. This Mustang promises much, and on our First Drive, it delivered as promised. Follow the jump to see if it could do the same for an entire week.

Gallery: Review: 2010 Ford Mustang GT

Photos copyright (C)2009 Drew Phillips / Weblogs, Inc
Continue reading Review: 2010 Ford Mustang GT - A full week changes attitudes

Review: 2010 Ford Mustang GT - A full week changes attitudes originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 18 Mar 2009 12:01:00 EST. What is coming in time for the 2011 model year will be a new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 and a 5.0-liter V8 code-named "Coyote."

Subbing the V6 EcoBoost for the V8 is about providing the same power with more efficiency. Said to be the premium engine for light-duty trucks, the direct-injection gas engine will offer something like 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque while carrying an EPA rating of "at least 23 miles-per-gallon on the highway." Those power numbers handily beat what you'll get from any of the current engines on offer, even though it's down two cylinders.

The "Coyote" 5.0-liter, modular, four-valve V8 will have "huge heads," and will return the same numbers as the V6: 400 hp and 400 lb-ft. This engine will become the standard F-150 lump, returning the same gas mileage as the current 5.4-liter but with much more power. This same engine will also reportedly find its way into the Mustang. That will leave the 6.2-liter V8 (the Boss) slated for the Raptor later this year as last engine choice (unless there's a 4-cylinder EcoBoost added in 2013), and it will go into special edition F-150s and the Super Duty trucks.

[Source: PickupTrucks.com]
REPORT: 2011 Ford F-150 to share new V8 with Mustang, also get EcoBoost V6 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 20 Jan 2009 11:17:00 EST.
Click above for high-res gallery of the 2010 Ford Mustang GT

Spy shots of the 2010 Ford Mustang are an easy thing to come by lately, as Ford has seemingly taken to driving prototypes around Detroit just for fun. We've shown you the base V6 model wearing little camo, the GT500 and even the car's interior. Now we bring you shots of the '10 Mustang GT model that were recently snapped in the parking lot of a strip mall. The shots show of all the goods, including the new front end inspired by the Giuigiaro Mustang Concept that debuted in 2006 at the LA Auto Show.

The refreshed '10 Mustang GT has a much harder job on its hands than did the 2004 model that kicked off the modern Mustang era. That car enjoyed a rear-wheel-drive muscle car segment of just one - itself - for years. The new Mustang, however, will find the Dodge Challenger and brand new Chevy Camaro waiting for it next year.

Gallery: 2010 Ford Mustang GT - spy shots VI

[Source: Great Lakes 4x4 via Mustang Evolution, photos by Caleb Tipton]
Spy Shots: 2010 Ford Mustang GT caught... parked originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 08:29:00 EST. Ford is protecting its parts investment by filing a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington against eight companies that are reproducing Mustang parts without the Blue Oval's consent. Ford parts affected are the hood, bumper, fender, side-view mirror and tail lamp assemblies, which are all covered under Ford's 14-year design patent on design elements. Chicago-based LKQ Corp and its Keystone Automotive Industries are named in the complaint along with several companies in Taiwan. Ford has already come out victorious in a similar case involving some of the same suppliers and the F-150, and Keystone is currently appealing. With Ford already winning a similar case, and what we'd assume is a much larger legal budget than the defendants', the Blue Oval will likely come out on top in this ruling, as well.

With all the hype surrounding the upcoming production versions of the Dodge Challenger and Chevy Camaro, it's easy to forget that the Mustang is still king of the hill when it comes to pony car sales. We've had the very competent current model since Fall 2004, while any competition continues to be stuck in future-tense. Even without any direct competition, Ford has stayed on top of its RWD V8 American icon, and the 2+2 pony car is still the stuff of dreams. The marketing geeks at Ford picked up on the phenomenon, and the result is a :30 spot with some lucky Joe performing power slides and donuts in a red Mustang GT while the fuzz give him the thumbs-up. Ford added a hot brunette driving a Mustang convertible for good measure, and you've got the ideal REM of many-a-man. Check out the spot after the jump.

Thanks for the tip, Mike!

Continue reading VIDEO: 2008 Mustang commercial is dreamy

VIDEO: 2008 Mustang commercial is dreamy originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 24 Jan 2008 17:59:00 EST. Their answer was so simple and obvious that it bears repeating. A 500 HP SVT Mustang doesn't sell for $30,000 over invoice, but if you add Carroll Shelby's name to it, a killer car becomes an instant sensation. Much of the street cred Shelby currently has was earned during the 1960s, when Carroll took the Mustang from a "secretary's car" to a hot-rod pony car.

Mr. Shelby is apparently too caught up living in the present to give much thought to what he did 40 years ago, as he plans on putting his 1969 Shelby GT500 convertible up for auction in January at Barrett Jackson. The vintage hotrod, which has nearly 70,000 miles on the odometer, is sure to fetch quite a premium over an already valuable '69 owned by some lucky schlep. The great-looking collectible is powered by a 428 Cobra Jet engine and has recently undergone a restoration. If you want to get in on the bidding action, make sure to get a lean on your mortgage, or just show up rich. It's gonna fetch a bundle. The press release is available after the jump.

[Source: Shelby via Jalopnik]

Gallery: Caroll Shelby's 1969 Shelby GT500

Continue reading Carroll Shelby's personal GT500 coming to Barrett Jackson

Carroll Shelby's personal GT500 coming to Barrett Jackson originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 08 Nov 2007 09:33:00 EST. Available for both V6 and V8 Mustangs, the obvious cosmetic changes (optional blacked-out grille, side window louvers, side scoops, spoiler delete, Bullitt badging, Highland Green paint, etc.) are paired with additional features like Eibach springs, Saleen pedals, and an upgraded Pioneer stereo. Those looking for more can opt for performance and handling upgrades from Ford Racing and Saleen at added expense. Based on the pictures on Blue Flame's site, it's a very nice conversion.

If that's not enough, the company has a slick BOSS package on offer as well. Follow the jump for that one.

Thanks to Scott for the tip!

[Source: Blue Flame American Distributions Network]
Continue reading Want a new Bullitt or BOSS Mustang? It seems that Ford's offering 0% APR financing over 36 months on all new 2007 Mustang purchases (from dealer stock) through July 9, 2007. The tip came in via a California Ford dealer, and a quick visit to the Ford Direct website confirmed what his email said.

The reason this seemed worth mentioning is that we almost never hear of deals like this on desirable cars like the Mustang, particularly the higher-end GT models and up. From what we see on the website, it applies to the 2007 Mustang V6, Mustang GT, Shelby GT, and Shelby GT500. Lately, the only promos we've been seeing on TV, etc. focus on deals related to the V6es with the Pony Package, etc. The 0% deal that's been available since June 28 was completely off our radar screens until now.

If you're in the market and can swing a 3-year deal, this might be worth looking into, particularly if you're shopping for a V8 Mustang. Don't expect any favors from dealers when it comes to Shelby pricing, though.

[Source: Ford]
Ford offering 0% APR financing on all 2007 Mustangs, including Shelbys originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 02 Jul 2007 14:26:00 EST. Unsurprisingly, a convertible version has been added to the stable, per se. We say it's unsurprising because after the introduction of the Hertz-only Shelby GT-H convertible, we figured that a Shelby GT version was a lock -- we just didn't know when it'd come. The coupe's still available, too, and '08 model year shoppers don't need to make any decisions with regard to color: the car's only available in Vista Blue with Metallic Silver stripes.

If you want one in Performance White or Black Ebony, you'd better set about getting yourself an '07. The powertrain's unchanged, so look for 320 horsepower coming from the lightly-massaged 4.6L V8 underhood. As with the '07, both manual and automatic transmissions will be available. We hear that the word on all this becomes official next week, so we'll follow-up then.

[Source: Mustang Evolution]
Ford drops the top on the 2008 Shelby GT, new color, too originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 08 Jun 2007 11:28:00 EST. The Memorial Day weekend weather forecast called for hot, sunny conditions -- perfect for the unofficial official kickoff to summer. Backyard parties would be devoid of no-shows and parade routes were assured to be standing-room-only. It was going to be a good weekend anyway, and Ford made it even better by entrusting yours truly with keys to an '07 Mustang GT for the duration. The big holiday weekend would be spent with a big, brassy muscle car sitting outside as driveway candy. And oh, what sweet, sweet candy... nostalgic styling covered in a Grabber Orange finish, a thundering V8, and a top that tucks behind the back seats, all to better appreciate the wicked roar coming from the stainless steel pipes in back. The whole thing is glorious Americana. For Memorial Day weekend, one couldn't ask for anything better.

Gallery: 2007 Ford Mustang GT Convertible

Continue reading Autoblog Garage Special: Memorial Day with the Mustang GT

Autoblog Garage Special: Memorial Day with the Mustang GT originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 05 Jun 2007 14:53:00 EST. No matter the series, it's all too easy to drop your life savings, your kid's college fund and any hope of making it to fiscal freedom if you've got the bug. For those willing to risk it all, the Mustang Challenge gives aspiring racers the opportunity to test their abilities in the wail of V8-powered, wheel-to-wheel combat.

The Miller Park Racing Association (MPRA) has setup the Mustang Challenge to allow amateurs to compete in a 14-race series that will be held at the Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele Valley, Utah.

For a grand total of $55,000, aspiring racers can purchase a modified Mustang GT, lightened by 330 pounds and sporting a revised intake, exhaust, braking, steering and suspension systems, along with a functional aero kit, prerequisite safety equipment and a data acquisitioning system. For those on the lower end of the economic spectrum, these modded 'Stangs will also be available for rent for practice sessions or on a per-race basis.

The Challenge will make its debut during the Magic of Miller Celebrity race over the Utah Grand Prix weekend. If someone needs a pit crew on their inaugural run, hit us up. A few of us have the chops and would love to live vicariously through a well-to-do reader.

[Source: Motorsport.com]
Well funded amateurs, your steed has arrived: Mustang Challenge originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 May 2007 10:26:00 EST. We just spoke to someone in the know, who has seen the Bullitt and claims to be familiar with the car pictured. This individual says that this car is NOT the Bullitt, but is another named variant (hence the covered cap in back). The good news is that the same source said that the Bullitt's much cooler-looking than this GT. And here we thought Ford was just being extra-sneaky/slick with the red paint. As for this car, then, we wonder if it's just a minimalist package for the GT, a la the old SN95 GTS (or better still, the 5.0 LX Fox-bodies). We have to admit -- we're curious, and our source refused to divulge any more specifics. In any case, we're all flummoxed right now as the Pony parade continues.

Our friends at Popular Mechanics tipped us off to new shots by Jim Dunne that they've posted on their website. The pics depict a "mystery" Mustang being trailered around Detroit, but the first thing we thought when laying eyes on them was: Bullitt. Dunne would have paid no mind to the car if not for the covered-up faux gas cap on the rear end, which obviously means there's something to hide there.

For us, the black wheels and the ponyless, lightless grille have us all but certain that this is indeed the Bullitt. Take those two elements, replace the photo car's finish with Highland Green, and friends, you have the modern iteration of Frank Bullitt's trusted steed. Kudos to Ford for being clever. By not overly disguising it and using the red paint as... well... a red herring, the car hides in plain sight unless you know what to look for.

Head on over to Popular Mechanics for two more shots of the car, and follow the jump for a little visual aid we cooked up.

[Source: Popular Mechanics]

Spied: Bullitt Mustang? originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 22 May 2007 07:55:00 EST. Those who watched this past January's Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale may remember Cooper's sublime '39 Lincoln Zephyr, which changed hands for $248,000. Well, Matt over at MustangBlog shot us a note letting us know that another one of Alice's machines is on the block, this time over at the virtual auction house for everyman: eBay.

The car in question is a black 2005 Mustang GT pushing out over 500 horsepower (535, according to a graphic on the car itself) with a little help from things like a Paxton blower and intercooler and Billy Boat exhaust. An automatic transmission tackles the duty of wrangling those ponies to the rear wheels. It looks good too, sporting a Shaker hood (very sweet), red racing stripe, and red line tires that look right at home on the neo-retro Mustang.

"No More Mr. Nice Guy," the title of one of the well-known songs off the rocker's Billion Dollar Babies album, is emblazoned on the quarter panels under the "GT" badging. Those who don't heed the subtle warning may find themselves getting dusted should they decide to get frisky with the car at a stoplight. If you're interested, head on over to eBay and check it out. Bidding starts at $30,000 and yes, there is a reserve to meet.

(Additional photos after the jump)

[Source: eBay via MustangBlog]
Continue reading eBay Find of the Day: Alice Cooper's Supercharged Mustang GT

eBay Find of the Day: Alice Cooper's Supercharged Mustang GT originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 12 Nov 2006 10:44:00 EST. I tend to prefer the smaller, more retro-looking ones seen on the Pony Package-equipped V6 models. While perusing Planet Mustang, however, I saw something that changed my mind about the big lights. Street Scene Equipment is selling a replacement grille for 2005 and newer Mustangs that takes the GT-sized driving lights and centers them in the manner of some late-60s Shelby Mustangs.

Granted, installing the new grille will result in the loss of your stock pony badge, but that's easily rectified by installing an offset pony as seen above. The car depicted is actually a V6 owned by one Tom Rasada, who details the installation at 4.0 Collective.

V6, V8, whatever -- this grille is a nice customization that looks as if it came directly from the factory. As we'd already reported, the Shelby GT is essentially a retail version of the rental-only Shelby GT-H. In some ways, it's more appealing, though. For one thing, it can be had with a five-speed manual that appears in the form of a classic Hurst cueball-topped shifter.

The Shelby GT begins life as an ordinary Mustang GT which is then shipped off to Shelby Automobiles in Las Vegas for transformation into a 325-horsepower snake. Its soul comes largely from Ford Racing performance parts. First up: the Ford Racing Handling pack, which drops the car and gives it more athletic suspension settings. To accent the changes, all the important suspension bits are painted Ford Racing Blue.

The Ford Racing Power Pack improves on the stock 4.6L V8 by adding a new cold-air intake, performance-oriented engine recalibration, a freer-flowing, better-sounding exhaust, and a shorter rear axle ratio. The aforementioned short-throw Hurst is also included if the car's equipped with the standard tranny. Power numbers rise to 325-hp and 330 lb-ft of torque.

Outside, cars are painted either Performance White or Black and receive silver LeMans striping. Lower side accent stripes with "Shelby GT" markings also appear in the transformation. GT-H-style front and rear fascias are installed and centered Shelby badging is added to the trunklid (this looks better than the offset "SHELBY" on the GT500). Unlike the GT-H, the Shelby GT does not include the rear declkid spoiler -- a change for the better, in our opinion. The stock Mustang GT badge stays in its familiar spot on the front quarter panels, and 18" chromed "Bullitt"-style rims reside in the wells. Finally, hood pins and a Cobra-style scoop are added to complete the visual upgrades. (This is another area where the Shelby GT differs from the GT-H, which wears a Shelby Performance hood).

The interior is highly reminiscent of the Hertz car, with its prominent dash and branded sill plates. Shelby GT floor mats and the Hurst (on 5-speed-equipped cars) complete the look. The number on the dash plate matches the one found on a similar plate in the engine bay.

Still no word on pricing, which will slot in somewhere between the Mustang GT and Shelby GT500. Whatever the cost, we certainly like the appearance of the new Shelby, and expect that it should be as fun to drive as it looks.

Author's Note: The standard transmission was erroneously referred to as a six-speed in the original post. The error has been corrected. The Shelby GT is available with a five-speed manual transmission.

(Hi-res photo gallery, press release after the jump)

[Source: Ford]
Continue reading Grown-ups want a pony, too: Shelby GT details, photos

Grown-ups want a pony, too: Shelby GT details, photos originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 13 Aug 2006 15:55:00 EST.
