If you're planning a trip to Germany, Stuttgart should be included in your itinerary. The city is home to both Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, but if factory tours aren't enough to make it worth your while, Porsche <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/26/new-porsche-museum-opens-this-week-in-stuttgart/">recently inaugurated</a> a new &euro;100 million museum displaying a collection that includes 80 of the company's most historic creations on 1,000 square meters of floor space housed in a dazzling new building. We <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/06/first-look-new-porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/">recently had a chance to check it out</a> in person, and we'd highly recommend any gearhead worth his or her pistons to do the same. And when you do, you'll probably want to bring some extra cash, because as you'd expect, the gift shop is packed with desirable items, the latest of which Porsche has just revealed.<br />
<br />
The new collection at the Porsche Museum shop includes sportswear - including the 356 Workshop Shirt for men and the retro "I too prefer Porsche" tee for the ladies - as well as books and DVDs outlining the company's history along with the usual suspects from metal signs and posters to keychains and exclusive 1:18 scale models. You can check 'em all out in the gallery below and the press release after the jump, but if you want to pick something up, you'll have to <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/20/cant-visit-the-porsche-museum-in-person-try-this/">go in person</a>.<br />

<br />You remember turning 20? the end of teenage years, the beginning of adulthood...that's what Subaru Tecnica International - the performance division better known by its initials STI - celebrates this year, and to mark the occasion, Fuji Heavy is inaugurating the STI Gallery, a new museum in Tokyo that highlights the products and activities of its Subaru racing unit.<br /><br />Located at 3-9-6 Osawa, Mitaka, Tokyo, the STI Gallery will be open every day (barring certain holidays) from 9:30 am to 7 pm, when visitors can stop by and scope out STI in all its glory. The car exhibition zone displays STI vehicles both past and present, race and road. (Colin McRae's WRC New Zealand-winning 1993 Legacy RS is currently on display to celebrate the launch of the new Legacy). There's also an exhibit of various components and memorabilia and a history section outlining the division's past activities. Seems like a worthwhile way to spend an afternoon if you find yourself in Tokyo with some time to burn.<br /><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.worldcarfans.com/9090605.003/sti-gallery-opens-in-tokyo">World Car Fans</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/06/09/subaru-opens-sti-gallery-in-tokyo/">Subaru opens STI Gallery in Tokyo</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Tue, 09 Jun 2009 16:20:00 EST. However, if things are conspiring to keep you from visiting the pyramid of Porsche's history, then allow us to recommend a virtual tour via interactive floorplans, courtesy of <em>Wallpaper</em>. There are 25 photos from the various floors (almost as beautiful the ones <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/1334781/">in our gallery</a> below) highlighting the museum's more dramatic locations. Put on your sunglasses, have some <em>wurstsalat</em> and lemonade while you watch, and it will be just like being in Baden-Wurttemburg.<br /> <br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/low/">Porsche Museum in Stuttgart</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/museum_1280_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/museum_1280_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/museum_1280_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/museum_1280_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/museum_1280_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /> [Source: <a href="http://www.wallpaper.com/architecture/interactive-floorplan-porsche-museum/3195">Wallpaper.com</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/03/20/cant-visit-the-porsche-museum-in-person-try-this/">Can't visit the Porsche museum in person? <br />The new monochromatic steel structure at Porscheplatz is designed to be a symbolic icon of the "Porsche Idea" presented, in all its complexity, inside. More than three decades after the original Porsche Museum opened in Stuttgart, Germany, the family-owned automaker invested more than $130 million in an all-new facility to present the storied history of the marque. The new museum is designed to welcome more than 200,000 visitors each year. In addition to the 80 historic vehicles on rolling display, the inspiring building houses a workshop for restoration, historical archives and generous conference areas. We were invited to a special preview of the new Porsche Museum just days before the doors officially opened last week. Follow us inside for a tour after the jump. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/low/">Porsche Museum in Stuttgart</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/museum_1280_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/museum_1280_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/museum_1280_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/museum_1280_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum-in-stuttgart/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/02/museum_1280_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><strong><em><small>All photos Copyright </small></em></strong><small><strong><em>(C) 2009 </em></strong><strong><em>Michael C. The museum spans over 1,000 square meters of floor space, wrapped in stunning architecture and housing a collection of over 80 significant Porsches from the marque's history, from <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/08/07/porsche-no-1-sets-out-for-pebble-beach/">the first 356</a> to the latest <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/24/officially-official-porsche-releases-all-the-photos-of-the-pana/">Panamera</a>. Included among the expositions is a section dedicated to the evolution of the 911 Turbo, an array of competition cars - including Porsche's victorious rally, Dakar and Le Mans challengers and Niki Lauda's Porsche-powered McLaren - concept cars from across the decades, some of Ferdinand Porsche's original tractors and more. <br /><br />The museum will be officially dedicated later this week before it opens its doors to the public on January 31, after which the museum will be open from Tuesday to Sunday every week from 9 am until 6 pm. We'll be posting our own tour of the review soon, but in the meantime, check out <a href="http://www.porsche.com/museum">the museum's website</a> and the images in the gallery below.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum/low/">Porsche Museum</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/2009_porsche-museum_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/2009_porsche-museum_01_001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/2009_porsche-museum_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/2009_porsche-museum_02_001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/porsche-museum/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2009/01/2009_porsche-museum_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Source: <a href="http://www.porsche.com/museum">Porsche</a> via <a href="http://www.leblogauto.com/2009/01/le-musee-porsche-est-fin-pret.html">Le Blog Auto</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/26/new-porsche-museum-opens-this-week-in-stuttgart/">New Porsche museum opens this week in Stuttgart</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Mon, 26 Jan 2009 18:31:00 EST. <br />Tucked away in a green, waterfall-riven valley between Akureyri and Husavik, Iceland is the hamlet of Ystafell (<em><strong>who</strong>-stuh-fel</em> is the closest we can get to proper pronunciation). Akureyri has some of the best nightlife in Iceland, while Husavik has whales and a museum dedicated to things unmentionable on a family site. That leaves the <a href="http://www.ystafell.is/default.asp?sid_id=31152&amp;tre_rod=002|001|&amp;tId=2">Transport Museum at Ystafell</a> practically unnoticed, which is a shame, because features two barns full of unlikely vehicles, each with an authentic Icelandic story. <em>Follow the jump for the tale of our recent visit, and check out the gallery of hi-res photos below.</em><br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/transport-museum-ystafell/low/">Transport Museum Ystafell</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/transport-museum-ystafell/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/ystafell_transport_01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/transport-museum-ystafell/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/ystafell_transport_02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/transport-museum-ystafell/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/ystafell_transport_03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/transport-museum-ystafell/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/ystafell_transport_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/photos/transport-museum-ystafell/low/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2008/09/ystafell_transport_05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/19/the-cars-of-ystafell-vintage-icelandic-metal/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The cars of Ystafell: vintage Icelandic metal</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/09/19/the-cars-of-ystafell-vintage-icelandic-metal/">The cars of Ystafell: vintage Icelandic metal</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Fri, 19 Sep 2008 19:28:00 EST. Unlike the <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/27/modern-retro-bmw-m1-homage-officially-revealed/">BMW M1 Homage concept</a>, this one's actually a runner, as evidenced by the video posted below the fold, showing the concept being driven from the studio into a car carrier then unloaded at the BMW Museum in Munich.<br /><br />No details about the roadster are available from the <a href="http://bmw-web.tv/en/channel/new">BMW-web.tv</a> site, but judging by the open cockpit and massive width, we're expecting something akin the M1, sans roof and sporting many of the design cues found on the homage. The museum has been recognized by the <em>Guinness Book of Records</em> for creating the "strongest artificially generated tornado in the world." The 34.4 meter high (that is 37.2 yards to those metrically challenged) vortex was not designed as an attraction, but to channel smoke out of the building in the event of a fire. The architecture wonderment that is the museum did not make use of any fire doors in the design (surely they would get in the way of the architect's vision). In order to meet regulations, the building engineers had to determine a way to keep smoke from spreading beyond the fire level, the tornado is the resulting solution. The twister takes around seven minutes to materialize and is generated by 144 jets and 28 tons of air. The low pressure area at the center of the tornado works to create a jet stream that draws smoke out of the building's corridors and funnels it upwards and out an exhaust vent on the roof. Check the gallery for photos of a carbon dioxide infused tornado demonstration. <br /></p>

Traveling shows, special events featuring a particular brand or model, or hands-on events have worked, but the A.A.C.A. Museum in Hershey, Pa has taken a creative approach to increasing attendance. <br /><br />The A.A.C.A has over $10 million worth vintage cars, and adult males comprise a large percentage of visitors. To draw a more diverse demographic, the museum has launched a successful campaign to get women and children in the doors. One promotion invited Girl Scouts to camp overnight at the museum, while learning how to perform maintenance on cars. The A.A.C.A. also hosted clinics on automotive detailing, which is a big hit with owners of vintage vehicles who often spend big dollars getting their classics prepped before car shows. Another unique event brought 350 visitors to the roof of the museum to watch "Madman Muntz: American Maverick" being projected onto the side of a building while hot dogs and popcorn were being served. <br /><br />We like car museums as much as the next auto-obsessed blogger, and the A.A.C.A. has some great ideas to increase foot traffic. Now to get the kids over to Hershey so they can learn how to change the oil.<br /><br />[Source: NY Times]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/12/auto-museum-takes-different-approach-to-visitors/">Auto museum takes different approach to visitors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 12 Aug 2007 15:33:00 EST. <p>The rise of niche carmakers has given those with longer pedigrees -- say more than five years, at this point -- compelling reasons to start showing off their heritage. Audi, with nearly a century of history behind it, has an Audi Tradition center near its Ingolstadt headquarters, and a writer at Fourtitude just took a tour and posted plenty of pics. Among the treasures were the usual suspects -- Auto Unions in various states of assembly, Quattros, and race cars. There's also, though, a DKW Monza, motorcycles from sub-brand NSU, engines, the second generation sportback TT concept, 50 S and 100 S Coupes, and a whole lot more. The collection has more than 300 cars, and Fourtitude's got 233 photos. There should be a desktop tour like this every Saturday.</p>

<p>April 26-28, 2007, hundreds of Corvette owners flocked to the <a href="http://www.corvettemuseum.com/">National Corvette Museum</a> in Bowling Green Kentucky. The occasion was the C5-C6 Bash, a festival celebrating the latest two versions of the American sports car that started it all. Corvette-ifosi were also there to witness the unveiling of the 2008 Corvette and register their approval or approbation. When not ogling the new car or any of the hundreds of other souped up Corvettes that made the journey, Bash-goers could wander the halls and pay homage to Zora Arkus-Duntov's remains, which are kept behind glass in a wall in the museum. And that's only the beginning. <br /></p>

The old museum <a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/03/16/out-with-the-old-as-the-mercedez-benz-museum-closes/">closed its doors</a> on March 18th after a career as one of the world's most visited corporate museums. The new museum's architecture is based on the design of a double helix. Visitors are taken to the top of the building via a lift and presented with two tour routes that take them down nine stories of Mercedes history and memorabilia. The end of each route is marked by the "Silver Arrows - Races and Records" display, a banked curve that turns into a cylindrical wall to which many record-breaking cars in motorsports history have been affixed. <br /><br />Check out more pics and descriptions of what each floor has to offer at the link.<br /><br />[Source: Classic Driver]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.autoblog.com/2006/05/21/mercedes-benz-museum-opens-its-doors/">Mercedes-Benz Museum opens its doors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.autoblog.com">Autoblog</a> on Sun, 21 May 2006 12:55:00 EST.
